ABSTRACT Objective: Follicular lesions of the thyroid with papillary carcinoma nuclear characteristics are classified as infiltrative follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma-FVPTC (IFVPTC), encapsulated/well demarcated FVPTC with tumour capsular invasion (IEFVPTC), and the newly described category “non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features” (NIFTP) formerly known as non-invasive encapsulated FVPTC. This study evaluated whether computerized image analysis can detect nuclear differences between these three tumour subtypes. Materials and methods: Slides with histological material from 15 cases of NIFTP and 33 cases of FVPTC subtypes (22 IEFVPTC, and 11 IFVPTC) were analyzed using the Image J image processing program. Tumour cells were compared for both nuclear morphometry and chromatin textural characteristics. Results: Nuclei from NIFTP and IFVPTC tumours differed in terms of chromatin textural features (grey intensity): mean (92.37 ± 21.01 vs 72.99 ± 14.73, p = 0.02), median (84.93 ± 21.17 vs 65.18 ± 17.08, p = 0.02), standard deviation (47.77 ± 9.55 vs 39.39 ± 7.18; p = 0.02), and coefficient of variation of standard deviation (19.96 ± 4.01 vs 24.75 ± 3.31; p = 0.003). No differences were found in relation to IEFVPTC. Conclusion: Computerized image analysis revealed differences in nuclear texture between NIFTP and IFVPTC, but not for IEFVPTC.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

This study used data from 42 forest management plans (FMP), registered at the IEF (Forest State Institute), from 1992 to 1998, aiming to perform a documental analysis employing easy to use sustainability indicators and verifiers, pertaining to the basic structure of a management plan, according to the state of Minas Gerais legal rules. Thus, all the FMP-related procedures were standardized, based on the state legal requirements, from which the checklist originated as well as the indicators and verifiers used in the FMP documental analysis. It was verified that the absence of a basic guide for the elaboration of the FMPs hinders the previous documental analyses of the institutional registration. Institutional deficiencies were detected in the documental and technical analyses of the management plans. The FMP items presenting the lowest execution percentage required greater technical knowledge (environmental impact, forestry system and references). The FMP items presenting the greatest execution percentage were descriptive and required less technical knowledge (objectives and justifications, general information and property area delimitation). The indicators and verifiers used were efficient and easy to use in the documental and technical analyses of the management plans studied. The previous documental analysis supported by a basic guide, carried out in this study disapproved all the management plans. It is necessary to standardize and compute the procedures of the documental and technical analyses for management plan approval. Forest exploitation level, in basal area, of all the management plans analyzed surpassed the maximum limit of intervention allowed by law.

The objective of the present study was to analyze the changes in the horizontal, diametric and internal structures in conventionally exploited areas of forest management plans. Indicators and verifiers were used having as control the legal reserve area. After the forest harvest period of each FMP and comparing the forest management areas with the legal reserve areas with respect to changes in the horizontal structure of the FMPs, the verifier absolute density indicated that the forest management areas were statistically equal (p>0.05) to legal reserve areas in the FMP28, FMP29 and FMP30 and different (P=0.05) in the FMP16. The verifiers outside absolute dominance and total volume outside bark indicated that the stocks of basal area and total volume of the forest management areas were statistically equal (P>0.05) to legal reserve areas in the FMP28, FMP30 and FMP16, and different (P=0.05) in the FMP29. In relation to changes in the diametric structure of PMFs, the verifiers distribution of absolute density, basal area and outside bark volume, per hectare and per diametric class, indicated that the forest management areas were statistically equal (P>0.05) to legal reserve areas in the FMP28, FMP29 and FMP30, and different (P=0.05) in the FMP16. In relation to changes in the internal structure of the FMPs, the verifier infestation by lianes indicated that the forest management areas showed infestation by lianes statistically equal (P>0.05) to legal reserve areas in the FMP29, FMP30 and FMP16, and different (P=0.05) in the FMP28. The verifier log quality showed that the managed forest areas had log quality statistically equal (P>0.05) to the legal reserve areas in all the FMPs.

Candeia (Eremanthus erythropappus) has been intensely exploited, because of its high economic importance. The solution for controlling this disordered exploitation is the development and implementation of forest management projects, and knowledge on candeia structure, both in the specific form and forest form, is crucial for the development of correct management. The objective of this work was to study the structure of Eremanthus erythropappus in different environments and characterize the parameters of the horizontal, vertical and internal structures and the distribution of diameter, basal area and volume of the species. Data were obtained from 5 sites; sites 1,2 and 3 consisted of candeia populations in the specific form, site 4 with rare occurrences of the species, and site 5 with occurrence of candeia in the forest form. A total of 5 plots, 400m², systematically distributed in each site were sampled. The analysis showed that, over the time, the number of other species increases and the number of candeia trees decreases. Site 1 showed the highest absolute density, while the best individuals, both in size and trunk quality, were found in site 5. The tree individuals in the studied sites were grouped in two total height strata, but the vertical strata limits differed among sites. The density distribution (n ha-1) per class of diameter for the tree community, considering only candeia specimens, was not significantly different by the X² test.

The study of the phytosociological structures and sizes in secondary forest fragments allows to make inferences on the original composition and structures at the beginning of the secondary succession. The importance of gallery or riparian forest studies increases with the increasing concerns on the impacts caused by water courses and their borders, specially the building of power plant dams. The objectives of this work were to describe the structure of a secondary gallery forest to identify an arboreous species population which participated at the beginning of the successional process in this forest and based on these data, to study the genetic structure and to assess the biology of the species which probably started the successional process. A survey of all the trees with a 1,3 m stem circumference from the ground greater than or equal to 10 cm was carried out. Out of the 48 tree species already included, 87.5% are endozoochoric and 12.5% are anemochoric. Out of the latter those with the smallest propagules presented greater density in this forest, which is isolated from others by pastures. The most important species (VI) presented by this gallery forest were: Talauma ovata, Erythrina falcata and Euterpe edulis. Ficus species from the subgenus Urostigma presented a great biomass in spite of its low density. Erythrina falcata was considered one of the species of greater importance, probably associated to the Ficus species at the beginning of the secondary succession, due to the structure of the stem diameters presented. In Erythrina falcata, the isoenzymatic systems of Isocitrate Dehydrogenase, Peroxidase, Phosphoglyco Mutase and Xiquimate Dehydrogenase were analyzed by means of zimograms. The population of 27 individuals of Erythrina falcata was found in Hardy-Weinberg balance, presenting a relatively high allelic diversity. The population of Erythrina falcata was found to be under biological and ecological conditions to start the secondary succession. The high genetic diversity of the Erythrina falcata population could be one of the determinant factors for the success of the colonization of the area. The association of Erythrina falcata with trees of the Ficus genus could have been determinant for the successful beginning of this process of colonization, and the initial association may have functioned as a low diversity system of species, comparable to other flooded forests of Southeastern Brazil.
