Selection of common bean cultivars for the irrigated production system

ABSTRACT In irrigated production systems, the common bean grain yield must reach high levels to maintain economic viability. In this context, management, like the selection of the most adapted cultivars, may be effective in obtaining high yields. Through a three-year experiment, it was aimed to select the common bean cultivars with the highest agronomic and technological performance in an irrigated production system and to determine the yield component that most interfered with common bean yield. The treatments consisted of eight common bean cultivars with indeterminate growth habit and from the pinto bean variety (carioca): ANFc 9, BRS Estilo, BRSMG Madrepérola, Pérola, IAC Alvorada, IAC Milênio, TAA Bola Cheia, and TAA Dama. IAC Milênio and IAC Alvorada had the highest agronomic performance for irrigated production systems, with grain yields up to 17% higher than other cultivars. The cultivars show little variation in the grain technological quality, meeting the culinary and nutritional qualities recommended for common bean. The ANFc 9 cultivar showed the highest crude protein content in grains (19%). The number of pods per plant is the yield component that most interferes with common bean grain yield, generating 86 kg ha-1 increments for each unitary increase. Therefore, the common bean cultivars selection in the irrigated production system is an effective management practice to increase common bean agronomic and quality performance.
RESUMO Em sistemas de produção irrigados, a produtividade de grãos do feijão-comum deve atingir níveis elevados para manter a viabilidade econômica. Nesse contexto, manejos como a seleção de cultivares mais adaptadas podem ser eficazes na obtenção de altas produtividades. Através de um experimento de três anos, objetivou-se selecionar as cultivares de feijão-comum com maior desempenho agronômico e tecnológico em sistema de produção irrigado, além de determinar o componente de produção que mais interfere na produtividade de grãos. Os tratamentos consistiram de oito cultivares de feijão-comum de hábito de crescimento indeterminado e grupo comercial de grãos ‘carioca’: ANFc 9, BRS Estilo, BRSMG Madrepérola, Pérola, IAC Alvorada, IAC Milênio, TAA Bola Cheia e TAA Dama. As cultivares IAC Milênio e IAC Alvorada apresentam o maior desempenho agronômico para o sistema de produção irrigado, com produtividade de grãos até 17% superior em relação às demais cultivares. As cultivares apresentam pouca variação na qualidade tecnológica do grão, atendendo às qualidades culinárias e nutricionais recomendadas para o feijão-comum. A cultivar ANFc 9 apresentou o maior teor de proteína bruta nos grãos (19%). O número de vagens por planta foi o componente de produção que mais interferiu na produtividade de grãos do feijão-comum, gerando incrementos de 86 kg ha-1 para cada aumento unitário. Portanto, a seleção de cultivares de feijão em sistema de produção irrigado é uma prática de manejo eficaz para aumentar o desempenho agronômico e qualitativo do feijão-comum.

Residual stress estimated by nanoindentation in pontics and abutments of veneered zirconia fixed dental prostheses

Abstract Glass ceramics’ fractures in zirconia fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) remains a clinical challenge since it has higher fracture rates than the gold standard, metal ceramic FDP. Nanoindentation has been shown a reliable tool to determine residual stress of ceramic systems, which can ultimately correlate to failure-proneness. Objectives: To assess residual tensile stress using nanoindentation in veneered three-unit zirconia FDPs at different surfaces of pontics and abutments. Methodology: Three composite resin replicas of the maxillary first premolar and crown-prepared abutment first molar were made to obtain three-unit FDPs. The FDPs were veneered with glass ceramic containing fluorapatite crystals and resin cemented on the replicas, embedded in epoxy resin, sectioned, and polished. Each specimen was subjected to nanoindentation in the following regions of interest: 1) Mesial premolar abutment (MPMa); 2) Distal premolar abutment (DPMa); 3) Buccal premolar abutment (BPMa); 4) Lingual premolar abutment (LPMa); 5) Mesial premolar pontic (MPMp); 6) Distal premolar pontic (DPMp); 7) Buccal premolar pontic (BPMp); 8) Lingual premolar pontic (LPMp); 9) Mesial molar abutment (MMa); 10) Distal molar abutment (DMa); 11) Buccal molar abutment (BMa); and 12) Lingual molar abutment (LMa). Data were assessed using Linear Mixed Model and Least Significant Difference (95%) tests. Results: Pontics had significantly higher hardness values than premolar (p=0.001) and molar (p=0.007) abutments, suggesting lower residual stress levels. Marginal ridges yielded higher hardness values for connectors (DPMa, MMa, MPMp and DPMp) than for outer proximal surfaces of abutments (MPMa and DMa). The mesial marginal ridge of the premolar abutment (MPMa) had the lowest hardness values, suggesting higher residual stress concentration. Conclusions: Residual stress in three-unit FDPs was lower in pontics than in abutments. The outer proximal surfaces of the abutments had the highest residual stress concentration.

ABSTRACT Sugarcane is grown in several countries and environmental conditions, and production increases should not only be based on the expansion of the cultivated area. As water is a limiting factor for sugarcane yield, irrigation is crucial to increase its yields. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the agronomic performance of five sugarcane cultivars under irrigated and rainfed conditions and compare yields in each treatment with those of previous cycles. The experiment was carried out from July 2017 to July 2018, which stands for the fourth sugarcane harvest. It consisted of two irrigation factors (irrigated and rainfed conditions), and five sugarcane cultivars (CTC4, IACSP93-3046, RB86-7515, IACSP95-5000, and IAC91-1099). Irrigation was applied to supply 100% of crop evapotranspiration. Irrigation increased sugarcane yields, and such increases varied with the genotype and crop cycle evaluated. In general, the cultivars most responsive to irrigation were IACSP93-3046 and IACSP95-5000, regardless of the evaluation cycle, and CTC4 from the fourth harvest onwards. Irrigation did not interfere with sugarcane technological quality if harvested after the middle of the crop season (June). Cultivars with higher tillering capacity, such as CTC4, had improved yield stability throughout the cycle when under irrigated conditions.

Abstract Maize has a high nitrogen (N) demand; as a result, more sustainable alternatives are needed to reduce demand for mineral fertilizers. The hypothesis is that the agronomic perfor mance of maize genotypes diverges in their potential when subjected to different supplies of N. This study aimed to evaluate and characterize the agronomic performance of maize geno types submitted to topdressing nitrogen fertilization and inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and select the best genotypes within each management. An experiment was conducted in the second season of 2017, in Jaboticabal-SP (Brazil), using 48 maize geno types in a randomized block design. Treatments consisted of: 1) application of 140 kg ha-1 nitrogen, using urea as mineral fertilizer; 2) A. brasilense inoculation via soil, at a rate of 600 mL ha-1, as biological fertilization. Grain yield and agronomic traits were evaluated. The data were subjected to analysis of variance (F-Test), means were compared by Scott-Knott test at 5% probability, and multivariate statistical analysis was performed by principal component analysis. The maize genotypes showed contrasting agronomic performance in relation to the nitrogen supplies evaluated. Inoculation with A. brasilense via soil has a significant effect on increasing maize grain yield, making it a viable and more sustainable alternative in the supply of N. The choice of the genotype is an essential factor for the successful use of mineral nitrogen fertilization or A. brasiliense inoculation.
Resumen El maíz tiene una alta demanda de nitrógeno (N), como resultado, se necesitan alter nativas más sostenibles para reducir la demanda de fertilizantes minerales. La hipótesis es que el comportamiento agronómico de los genotipos de maíz diverge en su potencial cuando se someten a diferentes suministrados de N. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar y caracte rizar el rendimiento agronómico de los genotipos de maíz sometidos a fertilización nitro genada e inoculación con Azospirillum brasilense y seleccionar los mejores genotipos dentro de cada manejo. Se realizó un experimento en la segunda temporada de 2017, en Jabotica bal-SP (Brasil), utilizando 48 genotipos de maíz en un diseño de bloques al azar. Los trata mientos consistieron en: 1) aplicación de 140 kg ha-1 de nitrógeno, utilizando urea como fertilizante mineral; 2) Inoculación de A. brasilense vía suelo, a razón de 600 mL ha-1, como fertilización biológica. Se evaluaron el rendimiento de granos y los rasgos agronómicos. Los datos se sometieron a análisis de varianza (prueba F), y las medias se compararon mediante la prueba de Scott-Knott con una probabilidad del 5%, y el análisis estadístico multivariado se realizó mediante análisis de componentes principales. Los genotipos de maíz mostraron un comportamiento agronómico contrastante en relación con los suministrados de N evaluados. La inoculación con A. brasilense vía suelo tiene un efecto significativo en incrementar el rendi miento de granos de maíz, convirtiéndolo en una alternativa viable y más sustentable en el sumi nistrado de N. La elección del genotipo es un factor esencial para el uso exitoso de la fertilización con nitrógeno mineral o la inoculación con A. brasiliense.

Can plant DNA barcoding be implemented in species-rich tropical regions? A perspective from São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract DNA barcoding helps to identify species, especially when identification is based on parts of organisms or life stages such as seeds, pollen, wood, roots or juveniles. However, the implementation of this approach strongly depends on the existence of complete reference libraries of DNA sequences. If such a library is incomplete, DNA-based identification will be inefficient. Here, we assess if DNA barcoding can already be implemented in species-rich tropical regions. We focus on the tree flora of São Paulo state, Brazil, which contains more than 2000 tree species. Using new DNA sequence data and carefully assembled GenBank accessions, we assembled 12,113 sequences from ten different regions. The ITS, rbcL, psbA-trnH, matK and trnL regions were better represented within the available sequences for São Paulo tree flora. Currently, only 58% of the São Paulo tree flora currently have at least one barcoding sequence available. However, these species represent on average 89% of the trees in São Paulo state forests. Therefore, conservation-oriented and ecological studies can already benefit from DNA barcoding to obtain more accurate species identifications. We present which taxa remain underrepresented for the São Paulo tree flora and discuss the implications of this result for other species-rich tropical regions.

Abstract The treatment of infections caused by resistant microorganisms represents a big challenge in healthcare due to limited treatment options. For this reason, the discovery of new active substances which are able to perform innovative and selective actions is of great impact nowadays. Statins and triazenes (TZC) have consolidated as a promising class of compounds, characterized by the expressive biological activity, especially antimicrobial activities. The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro synergistic antibacterial effect of the association of statins and a new TZC complex {[1-(4-bromophenyl)-3-phenyltriazene N 3-oxide-κ 2 N 1,O 4](dimethylbenzylamine-κ 2 C 1,N 4)palladium(II)} (Pd(DMBA)LBr) against American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) strains and clinical isolates. The complex and the statins showed bacterial activity of all tested strains and clinical isolates, evidencing that TZC complexion with metals can be promising. Simvastatin showed synergy when associated to the complex (FICI≤0.5), being the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 16 µg mL-1 found in 6 samples. Thus, it is possible to infer that the association between Pd(DMBA)LBr and simvastatin consists of an alternative to increase the pontential of these compounds, since statins have low toxicity.

Abstract In this paper, we explicitly show a complete analysis and detailed calculation of propagation characteristics of the effective refractive indices of the core and cladding for a long period grating employing both the Two-Layer and Three-Layer Geometries. The results are achieved employing graphical solution methods and presented in terms of the effective refractive indices of the core and cladding. Then, we compare the results with OptiGrating (Optiwave Systems Inc., Ottawa, Canada). Finally, we point the best model to evaluate the effective refractive indices, avoiding incorrect designs of the long period gratings.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Relationship between force platform and two functional tests for measuring balance in the elderly

CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO: Diferentes métodos clínicos e laboratoriais têm sido desenvolvidos para avaliar as dimensões do controle postural a fim de aumentar a relevância clínica nas decisões quanto ao déficit de equilíbrio. Objetivos: Correlacionar as medidas de plataforma de força com dois testes funcionais usados para avaliar o equilíbrio em idosos. MÉTODOS: Cento e vinte e quatro idosos fisicamente independentes e voluntários participaram deste estudo. Os sujeitos realizaram três testes: 1) teste tradicional e funcional de equilíbrio estático, que mede o tempo-limite em segundos de apoio unipodal; 2) teste funcional de agilidade e equilíbrio dinâmico, que quantifica o tempo total em segundos para realizar uma tarefa de sentar, levantar e locomover-se o mais rápido possível em torno de dois cones e 3) teste de equilíbrio unipodal sobre uma plataforma de força. RESULTADOS: A média do tempo-limite para o teste funcional de equilíbrio estático foi de 12 segundos (DP=9s), enquanto a média de tempo para o teste funcional de agilidade e equilíbrio dinâmico foi de 26 segundos (DP=6s). As correlações entre os parâmetros de equilíbrio da plataforma de força e os testes funcionais variaram entre -0,28 e 0,20, sugerindo uma associação fraca entre eles. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados suportam a ideia de que os dois testes funcionais não fornecem, necessariamente, a mesma informação que uma plataforma fornece quanto aos mecanismos de controle postural para equilíbrio. Este estudo colabora para a avaliação do equilíbrio em idosos e sugere que alguns testes funcionais deveriam ser usados com mais cautela quanto à sua indicação no alcance dos objetivos da pesquisa e na identificação dos possíveis déficits de equilíbrio, especialmente quando usados para avaliação clínica de idosos.
BACKGROUND: Clinical and laboratory methods have been developed to assess the different dimensions of postural control with the aim to increase the clinical relevance of decisions about balance deficit. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to correlate the force platform measurements with two functional tests used to evaluate balance in elderly. METHODS: A total of 124 physically independent elderly volunteers participated in this study. Subjects performed the following three tests: 1) a traditional functional balance test, named the one-leg standing test, which measures the time in seconds at this position; 2) a functionalagility/dynamic balance test, which quantifies the total time in seconds that a subject canstand up from a chair and move as quickly as possible around two cones; and 3) an unipodal balance test on a force platform. RESULTS: The one-leg standing test yielded a mean of 12 seconds (SD=9 s), while the mean time observed in the functional agility/dynamic balance test was 26 seconds (SD=6 s). The correlations between the balance parameters of force platform and two functional tests varied between -0.28 and 0.20, which shows a weak association between them. CONCLUSIONS: Our results support the idea that these functional tests do not necessarily furnish the same information regarding balance mechanisms as the force platform. This study contributes to the evaluation of balance in elderly and suggests that functional tests should be used with caution especially in regards to the purposes of the research and when conducting clinical assessments of the elderly.

INTRODUÇÃO: As ressecções hepáticas representam umas das últimas fronteiras vencidas pela cirurgia videolaparoscópica. Apesar da complexidade do procedimento, da demanda de grande incorporação de tecnologia e necessidade de experiência em cirurgia hepática e laparoscópica, a indicação do método tem crescido de forma expressiva nos últimos anos. OBJETIVO: Realizar análise crítica do método, baseada nos trabalhos existentes na literatura, ressaltando o estado atual de suas indicações, exequibilidade, segurança, resultados e aspectos técnicos primordiais. MÉTODO: Foram identificados e analisados os trabalhos pertinentes nas bases de dados LILACS e PUBMED até dezembro de 2009, utilizando-se os descritores "liver resection", "laparoscopic" e "liver surgery". Não foram encontrados trabalhos prospectivos e randomizados sobre o tema, sendo os dados disponíveis provenientes de série de casos, estudos caso-controle e alguns estudos multicêntricos e metanálises. CONCLUSÃO: A hepatectomia por videolaparoscopia é hoje operação segura e factível, mesmo para as ressecções hepáticas maiores, com baixo índice de morbimortalidade. O método pode ser utilizado para lesões malignas sem prejuízo dos princípios oncológicos e com vantagens nos pacientes com cirrose ou disfunção hepática. A melhor indicação recai sobre as lesões benignas, em especial o adenoma hepatocelular. Em mãos experientes e casos selecionados, como as lesões benignas localizadas nos segmentos anterolaterais hepáticos, principalmente no segmento lateral esquerdo, a ressecção videolaparoscópica pode ser considerada hoje como tratamento padrão.
INTRODUCTION: Hepatic resection is the last frontier to be surpassed by laparoscopic surgery. Although a highly complex procedure, the need of advanced technology and experience in both laparoscopic and hepatic surgery, the indications and number of cases done worldwide had a major growth in the last few years. AIM: Critically analyze the technique, based on published articles and acquired experience with more than 50 laparoscopic hepatic resections. Indications, feasibility, safety, and basic technical aspects are outlined. METHODS: Original published studies were identified by searching the Lilacs and Medline databases (up to December 2009) using the keywords "liver resection", "laparoscopic" and "liver surgery". It was not found any prospective randomized trial, so all data came from case series, case-control studies, and meta-analysis. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic liver resection is safe and feasible even for major resections, with low morbidity and mortality rates. Laparoscopic approach is considered to be oncologically similar to its open counterpart and may have some advantage in cirrhotic patients. Benign lesions, especially hepatocellular adenoma, remains the best indication. In experienced centers the laparoscopic approach may be considered the standard of care for benign antero-lateral located lesions, and for left lateral sectorectomy.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento inicial da parte aérea e do sistema radicular, a nutrição mineral e a fixação biológica de N2 (FBN) em plantios consorciados de Eucalyptus grandis e leguminosas arbóreas. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso com três repetições e sete tratamentos por bloco. Nas linhas de plantio, entre as plantas de E. grandis, foram plantadas, intercaladamente, leguminosas arbóreas nativas de matas brasileiras - Peltophorum dubium, Inga sp., Mimosa scabrella, Acacia polyphylla, Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia - e uma leguminosa exótica, Acacia mangium. Realizou-se, também, o plantio puro de E. grandis. Mimosa scabrella e A. mangium foram as leguminosas com maior crescimento. Eucalyptus grandis consorciado com M. scabrella cresceu menos, no entanto foi o povoamento com maior acumulação de biomassa. As densidades de raízes finas (DRF) do E. grandis foram 6 a 20 vezes maiores que as DRF das leguminosas na camada superficial do solo (0-10 cm) 24 meses após plantio. A DRF de M. scabrella e de M. caesalpiniaefolia foi maior na camada 30-50 cm e menor na camada 10-30 cm. Os valores de delta15N da M. scabrella indicam que 90% do N acumulado em seus tecidos é oriundo da FBN.
The objective of this work was to assess interactions between species on the above and belowground growth, nitrogen uptake and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in mixed stands of Eucalyptus grandis and native leguminous N2-fixing trees. A complete randomized block design was installed with seven treatments and three blocks. Within the lines of the E. grandis seedlings, native leguminous N2-fixing trees - Peltophorum dubium, Inga sp., Mimosa scabrella, Acacia polyphylla, Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia - and one exotic leguminous plant, Acacia mangium, were intercropped. E. grandis was also solely planted. Mimosa scabrella and A. mangium were the legume trees that presented the highest growth. Although E. grandis showed a lower growth when combined with M. scabrella, this mixed-species stand exhibited the highest biomass accumulation. Eucalyptus grandis fine root densities (FRD) were 6-20 times higher than the FRD of the leguminous species in the upper soil layer (0-10 cm) 24 months after planting. The FRD of M. scabrella and M. caesalpiniaefolia in the 30-50 cm soil layer was higher than in the 10-30 cm layer. The delta15N values of M. scabrella indicated that 90% of stocked N is derived from BNF.
