Microorganisms are becoming resistant to the commonly used chemical disinfectants. Thereby, these chemical products should now be replaced by natural ones. In this context, this research aimed to evaluate the disinfectant activity of the extract and decoction of Libidibia ferrea leaves in different surfaces. Thus, two forms of jucá leaf extraction (decoction and hydroalcoholic extraction) were tested through the diffusion disk technique from Kirby and Bauer, growth curve, acceptability test with the population, and surface test. Results showed sensibility to decoction of S. aureus and E. faecalis strains; however, for the extract, the strains that demonstrated sensibility were S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, Micrococcus spp. Corynebacterium spp., and S. Typhimurium in the diffusion disk test. A reduction of the bacterial charge throughout the growth curve was seen through the absorbance values after 24 hours to the strains of E. coli, E. feacalis, Micrococcus spp. and K. pneumoniae in the concentration of 100 mg/mL of the decoction and extract. Regarding the surfaces test, there was a reduction in the bacterial charge in all tested strains. Therefore, the L. ferrea may be used as an effective alternative disinfectant measure.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as atividades antioxidantes, genotóxicas, antigenotóxicas e antineoplásicas in vitro da apitoxina produzida pela abelha Apis mellifera. A atividade antioxidante da solução da apitoxina foi avaliada pelo método DPPH (2,2-difenil-1-picrilhidrazil). O potencial genotóxico da apitoxina foi analisado através dos índices médios de dano ao DNA (idDNA) dos fibroblastos da linhagem L929 expostos à peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2 - substância genotóxica), água destilada ou apitoxina. O efeito antigenotóxico da apitoxina foi analisado através da avaliação da diminuição percentual na genotoxicidade induzida por H2O2 nos fibroblastos L929 co-tratados com três concentrações da solução aquosa de apitoxina e submetidos ao ensaio cometa. A atividade antineoplásica in vitro em linhagens celulares tumorais humanas de adenocarcinoma da próstata (PC3), carcinoma hepatocelular (HEPGE2), melanoma (MAD-MB435) e astrocitoma (SNB19), foram verificadas pelo método colorimétrico do brometo de MTT [3- (4), 5-dimetiltiazol -2-il) -2,5-difeniltetrazólio]. A apitoxina não teve efeito genotóxico nas células L929 nas concentrações de 30, 10 e 5 µg / mL após 24 horas de exposição. Este efeito foi apenas evidente a 50 µg / mL. A apitoxina promoveu uma redução significativa no índice de danos ao DNA (idDNA) em todas as concentrações testadas. A 30 µg / mL, a apitoxina atenuou os efeitos genotóxicos induzidos por H2O2. A apitoxina também demonstrou potencial antineoplásico in vitro, uma vez que o efeito citotóxico foi observado em concentrações de 50 µg / mL e 25 µg / mL, com redução significativa na porcentagem de viabilidade das linhagens celulares de PC3, HEPGE2, MAD-MB435 e SNB19. A alta atividade antioxidante associada à ausência de efeito genotóxico e o efeito genoprotetor e antineoplásico demonstrado pela apitoxina aqui fornecem indicações do potencial terapêutico da apitoxina.

ABSTRACT: The objective was to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant, genotoxic, antigenotoxic, and antineoplastic activities of apitoxin produced by the bee Apis mellifera. The antioxidant activity of the apitoxin solution was evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhydrazyl) method. Genotoxic potential of apitoxin was analyzed by comparing the mean DNA damage indices (idDNA) of L929 strain fibroblasts exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 - genotoxic substance), distilled water, or apitoxin. The antigenotoxic effect of apitoxin was analyzed by assessing the percentage decrease in H2O2-induced genotoxicity in L929 fibroblasts co-treated with three concentrations of the aqueous apitoxin solution and subjected to comet assay. In vitro antineoplastic activity in human tumor cell lines of prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3), hepatocellular carcinoma (HEPGE2), melanoma (MAD-MB435), and astrocytoma (SNB19), were verified by MTT [3- (4) bromide colorimetric method, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -2,5-diphenyltetrazolium]. Apitoxin had no genotoxic effect on L929 cells at concentrations of 30, 10, and 5 µg/mL after 24 hours of exposure. This effect was only evident at 50 µg/mL. Apitoxin promoted a significant reduction in DNA damage index (idDNA) at all concentrations tested. At 30 µg/mL, apitoxin attenuated the genotoxic effects induced by H2O2. Apitoxin also demonstrated in vitro antineoplastic potential, since the cytotoxic effect was observed at concentrations of 50 µg/mL and 25 µg/mL, with significant reduction in viability percentage of PC3 tumor cell lines, HEPGE2, MAD-MB435, and SNB19. The high antioxidant activity associated with the absence of genotoxic effect and the genoprotective and antineoplastic effect demonstrated by apitoxin here provide indications of apitoxin’s therapeutic potential.

RESUMO: Objetivando determinar a prevalência de anticorpos anti-Trypanosoma vivax e os possíveis fatores de risco associados à infecção em bovinos no estado do Rio Grande do Norte, nordeste do Brasil, o trabalho consistiu em um estudo epidemiológico transversal, com amostragem não probabilística por conveniência, no qual foram analisadas, por meio da reação de imunofluorescência indireta, 467 amostras de soro sanguíneo de bovinos. Das amostras testadas, 42 foram reagentes para anticorpos IgG anti-Trypanosoma vivax, o que correspondeu à prevalência de 9,0%. Os fatores de risco que influenciaram a ocorrência da tripanossomose foram: exploração com finalidade do tipo leite, criação de bovinos de raça europeia, categoria animal vaca em lactação, aquisição de animais, forrageamento das margens de açudes e rios, além da presença de vetores mecânicos. A alta prevalência encontrada em animais de corte (59,5%), fêmeas (95,2%), raça europeia (88,1%), vacas em lactação (85,7%), pastagem a margens de açudes e rios (95,2%), além da presença de vetores mecânicos (81%) e aquisição de animais (88,1%), indica a expansão da tripanossomose no semiárido do Nordeste, e as informações obtidas poderão esclarecer os fatores epidemiológicos que determinam a ocorrência da tripanossomose por T. vivax na região.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of anti Trypanosoma vivax antibodies and the possible risk factors associated with the infection in cattle in Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil, through a cross-sectional epidemiological study, with non-probabilistic convenience sampling. A total of 467 cattle’s serum samples were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence. Forty-two samples tested positive for Trypanosoma vivax IgG antibodies, corresponding to the prevalence of 9%. Risk factors influencing the occurrence of trypanosomiasis were milk exploration, raising of European breeds, productivity category: lactation cow, purchase of new cattle, foraging habits near ponds and rivers, and the presence of mechanical vectors. So, high prevalence in beef animals (59.5%), females (95.2%), European breed (88.1%), lactating cows (85.7%), pasture at banks of dams and rivers (95.2%), in addition to the presence of mechanical vectors (81%) and acquisition of animals (88.1%), indicates the expansion of trypanosomiasis in Northeastern semi-arid region, and the information obtained may explain the epidemiological factors that determine the occurrence of trypanosomiasis by T. vivax in this region.

No nordeste brasileiro, Haemonchus contortus é considerado um nematódeo gastrintestinal de grande relevância médico-veterinária, por causar queda de produção, atraso no desenvolvimento, perdas econômicas e mortes de pequenos ruminantes. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi identificar as variações morfométricas e os tipos de apêndices vulvares existentes em H. contortusprovenientes de caprinos da região semiárida do Rio Grande do Norte. Utilizaram-se 100 exemplares de H. contortus, oriundos do acervo do Laboratório de Parasitologia Animal da Universidade Federal Rural do Semiárido (UFERSA), onde eles foram montados entre lâmina e lamínula com glicerina, para mensuração em ocular micrométrica em objetiva de 10X, com fator de correção de 1,3636. O comprimento corporal dos machos foi inferior ao das fêmeas (p < 0,05), os quais apresentaram respectivamente médias ± desvio padrão de 13,26 ± 1,15 e 18,32 ± 1,39 μm. Quanto ao tipo de apêndice vulvar encontrado nas fêmeas, 72% foram do tipo linguiforme, 18% do tipo liso e 10% do tipo botão. Esses dados contribuem de forma significativa para a taxonomia e diferenciação desses endoparasitas, principalmente na região do semiárido do Nordeste, onde a haemonchose tem papel preocupante para a caprinocultura.

In northeastern Brazil, Haemonchus contortus is considered a gastrointestinal nematode with great veterinary relevance, causing reduced production, delayed development, economic losses and death of small ruminants. The objective of this study was to identify the morphometric variation and the types of vulvar appendages in H. contortus from goats in the semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte. We used 100 units of H. contortus, from the collection of the Laboratory of Animal Parasitology of Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid (UFERSA), where they were mounted between slide and coverslip with glycerin, to measure in micrometer ocular at 10X objective with correction factor of 1.3636. The body length of males was lower than females (p < 0.05), which showed, respectively, mean ± standard deviation of 13,26 ± 1,15 e 18,32 ± 1,39 μm. Regarding the type of vulvar appendage found in females, 72% were linguiforme type, 18% flat type and 10% button. These data contribute significantly to the taxonomy and differentiation of these endoparasites, especially in northeastern semi-arid region, where haemonchose has a worrisome role for raising goats.
