ABSTRACT Introduction: As a result of the Quincke Research Scholarship, are search group with young medical students and recent graduated physicians interested to continue their search eve loping in LABCEL was integrated. Objective: To describe the growth of this group from 2012to 2020 in the post Quincke stay integrated by 8 assistant students and 8 students don’t belong to LABCEL but integrated as associated students. Results: From the metric point of view the mean articles made by the assistant students was 28,23 and from the associated one, 57,5. Nevertheless the mean of h index from the assistant students was 4,12 in comparison with the associated students that was 3,75. The average of years pent for the assistant students was 5 years and for the associated was 3,75. Both groups were working together in courses and congress in Cuba and abroad. Conclusions: The post Quincke stay was demonstrated to be a new possibility for formation, talent capture, learning. Scientific production and exchange of scientific knowedges in a new pedagogic way to make science.

RESUMEN Introducción: Como resultado de las Becas de Investigación Quincke, se ha formado un grupo de investigación con jóvenes estudiantes de medicina y recién egresados interesados en continuar las investigaciones que se desarrollan en el Laboratorio Central de Líquido Cefalorraquídeo (LABCEL). Objetivo: Describir el crecimiento de este grupo entre los años 2012 al 2020en lo que se ha llamado estancias post-Quincke integrado por los 8 alumnos ayudantes de LABCEL y los 8 alumnos que no forman parte de este colectivo y que a lo largo de estos años se han incorporados como alumnos asociados. Resultados: Desde el punto de vista métrico el promedio de artículos de los alumnos ayudantes ha sido de 28,23 y de los asociados de 47,5. El índice h sin embargo de los alumnos ayudantes promedio es de 4,12 en comparación con el de los asociados de 3,75. El promedio de años que los alumnos ayudantes se han vinculado ha sido de 5 años y el de los asociados de 3,75. Ambos grupos han trabajado colectivamente para cursos y eventos tanto en Cuba como en el exterior. Conclusiones: Las estancias post-Quincke han demostrado ser una nueva posibilidad de formación, captación de talentos, aprendizaje, producción científica e intercambio de conocimientos científicos en una novedosa forma pedagógica de hacer ciencia.

Abstract Introduction: Melanoma causes 75% of deaths from skin cancer. In 2018, according to GLOBOCAN, 287,723 new melanoma cases were registered, with a mortality of 60,712 cases, which is equivalent to 20% of all incident cases. Alternatives for the treatment of melanoma are based on disease staging and the molecular characteristics of the disease. Objective: To establish a consensus by common agreement of experts and construct suggestions for the diagnosis and management of early-stage melanoma based on evidence and adjusted to the Colombian context. Methods: A multidisciplinary expert consensus was established, wth the participation of 19 clinical oncologists, 2 soft tissue surgeons, 2 dermatologists, 2 pathologists, and 2 radiotherapists, active members of the Colombian Association of Hemato-Oncology (ACHO). This consensus was carried out in four stages: 1) Structuring of 29 questions, which were scored from 1 to 9; 2) Resubmission of non-consensual questions; 3) Analysis and discussion of responses; and 4) Validation of non-consensual responses by nominal consensus. Results: Twenty-nine questions related to the diagnosis and treatment of early-stage melanoma were discussed in order to construct suggestions based on evidence proven by experts, as well as on internationally recognized oncology management guidelines adapted to the Colombian context and reality. Conclusions: Multidisciplinary suggestions are offered for the diagnosis and treatment of early-stage melanoma, which should be considered in order to guide decision-making and homogenize clinical practice according to the Colombian context and the characteristics of the Colombian health care system. This is an academic and non-regulatory document.

Resumen Introducción: El melanoma ocasiona el 75% de las muertes por cáncer de piel. Según GLOBOCAN, en 2018 se presentaron 287.723 casos nuevos de melanoma, con una mortalidad de 60.712 casos, que equivale al 20% del total de los casos incidentes. Las alternativas para el tratamiento del melanoma se fundamentan en la estatificación de la enfermedad, y en las características moleculares de la enfermedad. Objetivo: Consensuar, por común acuerdo de expertos, sugerencias para el diagnóstico y manejo de melanoma temprano basadas en la evidencia y ajustadas al contexto colombiano. Métodos: Se llevó a cabo un consenso de expertos multidisciplinario, constituido por 19 oncólogos clínicos, 2 cirujanos de mama y tejidos blandos, 2 dermatólogos, 2 patólogos y 2 radioterapeutas, miembros activos de la Asociación Colombiana de Hemato Oncología (ACHO). Este consenso se realizó en 4 etapas: 1. Estructuración de 29 preguntas, que se calificaron de 1 a 9. 2. Reenvío de las preguntas no consensuadas. 3. Análisis y discusión de las respuestas. 4. Las respuestas no consensuadas se llevaron a un consenso nominal. Resultados: Se discutieron 29 preguntas relacionadas con el diagnóstico y tratamiento de melanoma temprano, se construyeron sugerencias basadas en evidencia utilizada por los expertos y en guías de manejo de oncología reconocidas internacionalmente, adaptadas al contexto y realidad colombianos. Conclusiones: Se presentan sugerencias multidisciplinarias para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de melanoma temprano, las cuales debe considerarse para orientar la toma de decisiones y homogenizar la práctica clínica de acuerdo al contexto colombiano y a las características propias del sistema de salud del país. Este es un documento académico y no regulatorio.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Quincke Research Scholarship is an iniciative that was supported by the necessity to develop research abilities for the medicine students that was not included in the curricular net in Cuba Objective: To describe the most new aspects of the Quincke Scholarship to develop the starting of the students like future scientists Methods: This study is a qualitative research. Interviews, phocal groups and available documental study were employed. Resultads: 101 medicine students and 24 residents from Cuba, USA, China, Vietnam, Uruguay, Bolivia, Spain, Mexico, Colombia and Angola among other ones were participated. In addition, professors from Spain, Ecuador and Peru came for free to share their knowledges. Based on open science non-published original data was brought to the students in order to arrive to results from an hypothesis. For foreigner students they can apply to a travel grant thanks to the American Physiological Society by an International Opportunity Program Award. Conclusions: Quincke Research Scholarship was demonstrated to be an innovative and sustaintable project based on open science for medical education because by the way the students become protagonists of scientific results and to movilize personalities from other countries.

RESUMEN Introducción: Las Becas de Investigación Quincke son una iniciativa que se sustenta en la necesidad de la adquisición de habilidades para la investigación, lo que no está contemplado en la malla curricular de los estudiantes de Medicina en Cuba. Objetivo: Describir los aspectos más novedosos en cuanto a innovación de las becas Quincke, que se ha mantenido sostenidamente y en ascenso todos estos años para capacitar a los estudiantes como futuros científicos. Métodos: Este estudio es una investigación cualitativa. Se usa como instrumento de investigación la entrevista y los grupos focales y, además, se evalúa la evidencia documental disponible. Resultados: Hasta la fecha han asistido 101 estudiantes de Medicina y 24 médicos residentes de Angola, Bolivia, China, Colombia, Cuba, España, Estados Unidos, México, Uruguay y Vietnam. Han participado profesores de España, Ecuador y Perú a impartir gratuitamente sus conocimientos. A partir de datos originales no publicados, basándose en los principios de la ciencia abierta, los estudiantes deben llegar a los resultados a partir de una hipótesis. Para los estudiantes que provienen del exterior se ha posibilitado que soliciten “travel grants” gracias a un donativo de la American Physiological Society a partir del International Opportunity Program Award. Conclusiones: Las Becas de Investigación Quincke han demostrado ser un proyecto innovador sostenible basado en la ciencia abierta para la educación médica por la forma en que se desarrolla, donde los estudiantes son protagonistas de los resultados científicos. Es, además, un proyecto movilizador de personalidades procedentes de otros países.

Resumen Introducción: La disponibilidad de drogas con una alta pureza y un bajo costo, ha aumentado el consumo de sustancias por vía intravenosa; llevándolo a ser considerado como un problema de salud pública, por su asociación con la presencia de infección por VIH. Se estima que existen aproximadamente 16 millones de consumidores de drogas intravenosas en el mundo y en Colombia, 15.000. Objetivo: identificar los factores asociados con la infección por VIH en personas que se inyectan drogas. Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo transversal, realizado (diciembre 2017/ enero 2018) Medellín - Colombia, se utilizó la metodología Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS). Resultados: Fueron reclutados 224 participantes, un 86,2% fueron hombres, el 82,0% eran solteros, el (67,0%) pertenecía al régimen de salud subsidiado o vinculado. Con relación a la prevalencia de infección por VIH esta fue del 3,6%. Este estudio encontró que el 38,8% de los consumidores había compartido agujas y jeringas con hasta tres personas, lo cual representa una probabilidad de 5,07 veces de contraer la infección comparado con aquellos que no comparten (RPc=5,07 CI95% 1,19-21,55), si esta práctica se hace con un amigo cercano dicha probabilidad aumenta a casi el doble 10,69 (RPc= 10,69 CI95% 2,26-50,61), (p<0,05). Conclusión: Ante la baja prevalencia de VIH, es necesario, el desarrollo e implementación de políticas públicas que tengan como objetivo la creación de programas de prevención que finalmente, lleven a la reducción de la infección en esta población.

Abstract Introduction: the availability of high purity and low-cost drugs has increased the use of intravenous substances, which makes it a public health problem due to its association with HIV infection. Objective: to identify the factors associated with HIV infection in people who inject drugs. Materials and methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out between December 2017 and January 2018 in Medellin, Colombia. We use the sampling conducted by the respondent (RDS). Results: They have recruited 224 subjects, 86.2% were men, 82.0% were single and 67.0% belonged to the subsidized or linked health system. The prevalence of HIV infection was 3.6%. This study found that 38.8% of consumers have shared needles and syringes with up to three people, representing a risk of infection of 5.07 times, compared to those who do not share (RPc = 5.07 95% CI: 1.19-21.55), and if this practice is carried out with a close friend, the probability increases to almost double (10.69) (RPc = 10.69 IC 95%: 2.26-50.61) (p <0.05). Conclusion: Given the low prevalence of HIV, it is vital to develop and implement public policies whose objective is to create prevention programs that ultimately lead to the reduction of infection in this population.

ABSTRACT In a neuroinflammatory process a polyclonal and poly-specific activation is produced in cerebrospinal fluid. This activation starts from the first days and may persist for a long time. The clones not related directly against the biological agent do not proliferate by apoptosis. Reibergram determine if part of the immunoglobulins content in cerebrospinal fluid belongs from the blood or it is synthesized in the central nervous system. Antibody index determines if the specific antibodies was synthesized intrathecally. By these tools it can be possible to identify the humoral immune response against some herpes virus in pediatric patients suffering from a central nervous system inflammatory process. Quantification of specific IgG against citomegalovirus, varicella zoster and herpes simplex virus in serum and cerebrospinal fluid was done by ELISA. Specific Antibody index against these viruses were similar for the different age groups, which confirm the early exposure of the population.

RESUMEN En los procesos neuroinflamatorios se produce a nivel de líquido cefalorraquídeo una activación policlonal y poliespecífica. Esta activación se produce desde los primeros días y puede permanecer por períodos prolongados. Luego por mecanismos de apoptosis los clones que no responden directamente contra los agentes biológicos involucrados no proliferan. El Reibergrama permite saber si las inmunoglobulinas presentes en el líquido cefalorraquídeo se sintetizaron o no en el sistema nervioso central (SNC) y el Índice de Anticuerpo (IA) determina la especificidad de las mismas en caso de que exista síntesis intratecal. Con estas herramientas nos propusimos identificar la respuesta neuroinmunológica frente a agentes de la familia herpesvirus en pacientes pediátricos con proceso inflamatorio del SNC a partir de sus respectivos IA. Para lograr esto se cuantificaron los niveles de IgG y albúmina en suero y líquido cefalorraquídeo (LCR) mediante inmunodifusión radial simple y por ensayo inmunoenzimático, con lo cual se construyó el Reibergrama que permitió la selección de 85 pacientes pediátricos con síntesis intratecal de inmunoglobulinas, que se diferenciaron en cuatro grupos según sus edades. Mediante ensayo inmunoenzimático se cuantificaron los niveles de IgG específica contra citomegalovirus, virus varicela zoster y virus herpes simple, tanto en suero como en LCR y se determinó el IA específico. La respuesta contra los virus estudiados fue similar para los distintos grupos de edades, lo cual nos permite afirmar la exposición temprana a los mismos.

Abstract Objective: To report our center’s experience in the surgical treatment of ventricular reconstruction, an effective and efficient technique that allows patients with end-stage heart failure of ischemic etiology to have clinical improvement and increased survival. Methods: Observational, clinical-surgical, sequential, retrospective study. Patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy and left ventricular aneurysm were attended at the Heart Failure, Ventricular Dysfunction and Cardiac Transplant outpatient clinic of the Dante Pazzanese Cardiology Institute, from January 2010 to December 2016. Data from 34 patients were collected, including systemic arterial hypertension, ejection fraction, New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classification (FC), European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) II value, Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) score, ventricular reconstruction technique, and survival. Results: Overall mortality of 14.7%, with hospital admission being 8.82% and late death being 5.88%. Total survival rate at five years of 85.3%. In the preoperative phase, NYHA FC was Class I in five patients, II in 18, III in eight, and IV in three vs. NYHA FC Class I in 17 patients, II in eight, III in six, and IV in three, in the postoperative period. EuroSCORE II mean value was 6.29, P≤0.01; hazard ratio (HR) 1.16 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.31). STS mortality/morbidity score mean value was 18.14, P≤0.004; HR 1.19 (95% CI 1.05-1.33). Surgical techniques showed no difference in survival among Dor 81% vs. Jatene 91.7%. Conclusion: Surgical treatment of left ventricular reconstruction in candidates for heart transplantation is effective, efficient, and safe, providing adequate survival.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The improvement of the Cuban society demands new research and teaching forms in accordance with national and international reality. Objective: To encourage students of medical sciences to become effectively involved in scientific research as protagonists, by means of a selective summer course for undergraduate and postgraduate students based on the principles of open science. Methods: We initially considered problems such as insufficient use of LABCEL for the progression of medical students and their connection with the syllabus, and then assumed the materialist dialectics as a general method of science. For the research tasks, the methods of the theoretical level were used, such as the historical-logical, analysis and synthesis, induction-deduction, and modeling with a system-related approach, together with documentary analysis. At the empirical level, the methods were observation, the survey, the interview with managers, the pedagogical experiment, and the pedagogical test. Results: The outcomes of seven years of work are supported by the prizes obtained, such as the Annual Immunology Award in the Teaching category, and by the international LURAP and IOP awards given by the American Physiological Society. Conclusions: The experience of these years of work indicates that this type of summer course based on open science is new and innovative.

RESUMEN Introducción: El perfeccionamiento de la sociedad cubana demanda nuevas formas de investigación y enseñanza acordes con la realidad nacional e internacional. Objetivo: Favorecer que los estudiantes de Ciencias Médicas se vinculen efectivamente a la investigación científica como protagonistas a partir de un curso de verano con carácter selectivo para estudiantes de pre y posgrado basado en los postulados de la ciencia abierta. Métodos: A partir de problemas como insuficiente aprovechamiento de LABCEL para el desarrollo de los estudiantes de medicina y su vinculación a planes de estudio, se asumió la dialéctica materialista como método general de la ciencia. Para las tareas de investigación se usaron los métodos del nivel teórico el histórico-lógico, análisis y síntesis, inducción-deducción, modelación con un enfoque de sistema junto a un análisis documental. En el nivel empírico el método fue la observación, la encuesta, la entrevista a directivos y el experimento pedagógico y la prueba pedagógica. Resultados: Se encontraron avalados por los premios obtenidos como el Premio Anual de Inmunología en la categoría docencia, y en los premios internacionales LURAP y IOP Award otorgado por la American Physiological Society los resultados de siete años de trabajo. Conclusiones: La experiencia de estos años de trabajo indica que esta modalidad de curso de verano a partir de la ciencia abierta es novedosa e innovadora.

ABSTRACT There is a growing concern about the presence of pesticide residues in agricultural land because they constitute an environmental risk and a source of human exposure. In this work, the presence of these residues and the risk of exposure was determined in the micro-watershed of Los Zarzales, Rivas Dávila municipality, Mérida, Venezuela. Soil samples were taken in the initial, middle and final stages of short cycle crops, and the active ingredients were extracted and analyzed by HPLC. The risk of exposure was estimated by calculating the dose of pesticides through non-dietary intake of contaminated soil and dust, according to the US-EPA criteria. The highest concentration and variety of compounds was recorded during the middle stage: 26 ± 7 mg/kg of total residues and 100% detection frequency, standing out among them paraquat (15 ± 7 mg/kg), carbendazim (8 ± 2 mg/kg), mancozeb (3.7 ± 0.7 mg/kg) and carbofuran (1.2 ± 0.5 mg/kg). Based on these values, the calculated daily doses were 1.5, 0.8, 0.37 and 0.12 μg/day, respectively, all of which were below the admissible daily intake established by FAO/WHO, which is used as reference. Despite of this, the total dose reached 2.8 μg/day, which is considered as a risk of exposure.

RESUMEN La preocupación sobre la presencia de residuos de plaguicidas en suelos de uso agrícola es cada vez mayor debido a que constituyen un riesgo ambiental y una fuente de exposición humana. En este trabajo se determinó la presencia de estos residuos y el riesgo de exposición en la microcuenca Los Zarzales, municipio Rivas Dávila, Mérida, Venezuela. Se tomaron muestras de suelos en la etapa inicial, media y final de cultivos de ciclo corto, se extrajeron los principios activos y se analizaron por cromatografía líquida de alta resolución. El riesgo de exposición se estimó calculando la dosis de plaguicidas a través de la ingesta no dietética de suelo y polvo contaminado, según los criterios de la US-EPA. La mayor concentración y variedad de compuestos se registró durante la etapa media: 26 ± 7 mg/kg de residuos totales y 100 % de frecuencia de detección, destacando entre ellos paraquat (15 ± 7 mg/kg), carbendazim (8 ± 2 mg/kg), mancozeb (3.7 ± 0.7 mg/kg) y carbofurano (1.2 ± 0.5 mg/kg). Con base en estos valores, las dosis diarias calculadas fueron: 1.5, 0.8, 0.37 y 0.12 µg/día, respectivamente, todas las cuales resultaron estar por debajo de la ingesta diaria admisible establecida por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y la Alimentación y la Organización Mundial de la Salud, que es utilizada como referencia. A pesar de ello, la dosis total alcanzó los 2.8 µg/día, lo cual se considera que puede constituir un riesgo de exposición.

Background: The dynamics of brain derived proteins in cerebrospinal fluid is different from the dynamics of blood-derived proteins. Aim: To describe the empirical data for mannan binding lectin and gives a theoretical interpretation of the dynamics of this protein in cerebrospinal fluid through a new reibergram. Methods: Serum and cerebrospinal fluid mannan binding lectin were measured in 40 normal adults by immunofluorometric assays. The diagnostic criteria were based in; normal control samples defined clinically and diseases with blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier dysfunction. Results: Correlation coefficient between cerebrospinal fluid MBL and serum MBL was very low. Mannan binding lectin reibergram was designed according with previous procedures. Conclusion: Under all conditions of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, the reibergram can identify the occurrence of intrathecal mannan binding lectin synthesis.

Introducción: la dinámica particular de las proteínas derivadas del cerebro en el líquido cefalorraquídeo es diferente a la dinámica de las proteínas derivadas de la sangre. Objetivo: describir los datos empíricos de la lectina de unión a manosa y brindar una interpretación teórica de la dinámica de esta proteína a través de la confección un nuevo reibergrama. Métodos: la lectina de unión a manosa en suero y líquido cfalorraquídeo, fue medida en 40 adultos normales a través de un ensayo inmunofluorométrico. El criterio diagnóstico estuvo basado en; muestras controles (pacientes normales) y muestras de pacientes con enfermedades que cursaron con disfunción de barrera sangre-líquido cefalorraquídeo. Resultados: el coeficiente de correlación entre la lectina de unión a manosa en el líquido cefalorraquídeo y en el suero, fue muy bajo. El reibergrama de la lectina de unión a manosa se diseñó de acuerdo con procedimientos previos. Conclusiones: bajo cualquier condición de barrera sangre-líquido cefalorraquídeo, el reibergrama puede identificar la ocurrencia de síntesis intratecal de lectina de unión a manosa.

The proteins plasmatic that suffer alterations during the inflammation are known like reactants of the acute phase. This group of proteins plays an important paper in the complex process of the inflammation. The changes in it concentration plasmatic are due to an increase in the synthesis by the liver, do not allow knowing both the location and the causes of the reaction inflammatory; however they are an excellent tool. The levels plasmatic of these proteins are increased in different times. In first time do it the protein C reactive and alpha 1 antitrypsin; after that, alpha 1 acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin, fraction C4 of the complement and fibrinogen. The last proteins to shown increased levels are the ceruloplasmin and the fraction C3 of complement. During many years Protein C reactive was little used. Recently this protein is very important and it constitutes a valuable tool like marker inflammatory in rheumatologic illnesses of immunological origin.

Las proteínas plasmáticas que sufren alteraciones durante la inflamación, se conocen como reactantes de la fase aguda. Este grupo proteico juega un importante papel en el complejo proceso de la inflamación. Los cambios en su concentración plasmática, responden a un aumento en la síntesis por parte de hígado, no permiten conocer ni la ubicación, ni las causas de la reacción inflamatoria pero constituyen una excelente herramienta. Los niveles plasmáticos de dichas proteínas, se elevan en tiempos diferentes. En primer lugar lo hacen la proteína C reactiva y la alfa 1 antitripsina; después, se elevan la alfa 1 glicoproteína ácida, la haptoglobina, la fracción C4 del complemento y el fibrinógeno. Las últimas en elevarse son la ceruloplasmina y la fracción C3 del complemento. La proteína C reactiva fue poco utilizada durante muchos años; en la actualidad constituye una valiosa herramienta como marcador inflamatorio en las enfermedades reumatológicas de origen inmunológico.

Manifestations neuropsychiatric in Systemic lupus erythematosus debut can result of difficult diagnostic in absence of other elements of its clinical manifestations. Reibergram or Reiber´s quotient diagram are used in order to analyse the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier function and the proteins intrathecal synthesis. It presents a patient with manifestations neuropsychiatric that in the course of the illness is identified like a Systemic lupus erythematosus with affectation of the central nervous system. The patient showed a favourable response to use of steroids intravenous. It reflects complementary tests that oriented to this diagnostic and is established the intrathecal synthesis pattern of the major immunoglobulins using the reibergrama. This study constitutes the first report of the neuroimmunological response in a patient with neuropsychiatric manifestations in Systemic lupus erythematosus.

Las manifestaciones neuropsiquiátricas del lupus eritematoso sistémico en su debut pueden resultar de difícil diagnóstico en ausencia de otros elementos de su cuadro clínico. El reibergrama, o gráfica de las razones de Reiber, son diagramas en los que básicamente se analiza de forma integrada la funcionalidad de la barrera sangre- líquido cefalorraquídeo y la síntesis intratecal de una proteína determinada. Se presenta un paciente con manifestaciones neuropsiquiátricas que en el curso de la enfermedad se identifica como un lupus eritematoso sistémico con afectación del sistema nervioso central y respuesta favorable al uso de esteroides endovenoso. Se reflejan exámenes complementarios que orientaron a este diagnóstico y se establece el patrón de síntesis intratecal de inmunoglobulinas mayores, a través del reibergrama. Constituye este estudio el primer reporte sobre la respuesta neuroinmunológica en un paciente con manifestaciones neuropsiquiátricas en el lupus eritematoso sistémico.

Irapuato county, in Guanajuato state in central Mexico, was the main strawberry producer at national level, where viral infections was one of the causes for the decrease in the amount of acres cultivated with this crop. Strawberry mottle virus (SMoV), Strawberry crinkle virus (SCV), and Strawberry latent ringspot virus (SLRSV) were previously found affecting strawberry production in Irapuato; however, the viral diversity present in strawberry fields of Mexico is unknown. This survey was carried in a small area of Irapuato and Abasolo counties, in Guanajuato state, where the highest viral diversity associated to strawberry has been reported. We detected seven different viral species in 57 samples collected: SCV, SMoV, Fragaria chiloensis cryptic virus (FClCV), Fragaria chiloensis latent virus (FClLV), Strawberry pallidosis associated virus (SPaV), Strawberry necrotic shock virus (SNSV), and Strawberry mild yellow edge virus (SMYEV). All in single and in 24 different mixed infections, conforming the Irapuato s Local Strawberry Virus Complex (LSVC). The most abundant viruses were SMoV, FClCV, SNSV, and SMYEV. We compared nucleotide sequences of strawberry Mexican viral isolates with those that affect strawberry in the USA, finding deletions, silent and non-silent mutations in the Mexican isolates.

Irapuato, en el estado de Guanajuato, fue el principal productor de fresa a nivel nacional. La pérdida de ese estatus fue debida a infecciones virales, entre otras causas. El virus del moteado de la fresa (SMoV), el del arrugamiento de la fresa (SCV) y el virus latente del anillo necrótico de la fresa (SLRSV) fueron encontrados previamente en Irapuato; sin embargo, la diversidad viral es aún desconocida. Este estudio se realizó en los municipios de Irapuato y Abasolo, en donde se había reportado su presencia. Detectamos siete especies virales en 57 muestras colectadas: SCV, SMoV, el virus críptico de Fragaria chiloensis (FClCV), el latente de Fragaria chiloensis (FClCLV), el asociado a la palidosis de la fresa (SPaV), el del choque necrótico de la fresa (SNSV) y el amarillamiento marginal tenue de la fresa (SMYEV). Éstos se encontraron en infecciones sencillas y en 24 mezclas, conformando el complejo viral local de fresa (LSVC). Los más abundantes fueron: SMoV, FClCV, SNSV y SMYEV. Se compararon las secuencias de nucleótidos de los aislamientos virales mexicanos con los de EE. UU.

Dengue virus is a RNA virus of the Flaviviridae family including also West Nile virus, Japanese encephalitis virus and yellow fever virus. A retrospective study with three patients diagnosed with encephalitis associated with dengue virus was carried out. Using their sera and cerebrospinal fluid samples the levels of high class of immunoglobulins by radial immunodiffusion and mannan binding lectin were quantified by fluorometry three classes of immunoglobulins levels were quantified by using an immunodiffusion technique. Mannose-binding lectin was quantified by fluorometry. A retrospective study with three patients diagnosed with encephalitis. The Reibergram has shown three classes of immunoglobulins intrathecal synthesis and absence of mannan binding lectin synthesis. Differences in the immunoglobulin intrathecal synthesis percent were observed, which were related with the moment of virus infection and the onset of neurological manifestations compatible with encephalitis. This is the first report of neurological affectations in Cuban patients with dengue fever. The intrathecal immune response may be used for the best knowledge of the disease and for the contribution to the development of possible candidate vaccine.

El virus del dengue es un virus ARN miembro de la familia Flaviviridae, la cual incluye, además, el de la fiebre amarilla, el del Nilo del Oeste y la encefalitis japonesa. Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo con tres pacientes diagnosticados de encefalitis asociada al dengue, en cuyas muestras de suero y líquido cefalorraquídeo se cuantificaron los niveles de las clases mayores de inmunoglobulinas por inmunodifusión radial y la manosa de unión a lectina, proteína de la vía de las lectinas del sistema del complemento por fluorometría. En el reibergrama se muestra la presencia de síntesis intratecal de las tres clases de inmunoglobulinas y ausencia de síntesis intratecal de lectina de unión a manosa. Existieron diferencias en cuanto al por ciento de síntesis intratecal de inmunoglobulinas, las cuales estuvieron relacionadas con el momento de la infección por el virus y la aparición de las manifestaciones neurológicas compatibles con una encefalitis. Este es el primer reporte de afectaciones neurológicas en pacientes cubanos con dengue. La respuesta inmune intratecal puede ser utilizada para el mejor conocimiento de la enfermedad y contribuir al desarrollo de posibles candidatos vacunales

El selenio es constituyente de la enzima antioxidante glutatión peroxidasa (GSH-Px; E.C.1.11.1.9). La deficiencia de selenio en bovinos disminuye la actividad sanguínea de GSH-Px, predisponiendo a las membranas celulares a sufrir un daño oxidativo. La susceptibilidad de los eritrocitos bovinos al estrés oxidativo puede estimarse mediante la prueba de fragilidad osmótica eritrocitaria (FOE). Con el propósito de evaluar la FOE en bovinos a pastoreo sobre praderas con bajo contenido en selenio, en diferentes periodos del año, se emplearon dos grupos de 16 vaquillas, que pastoreaban praderas con un contenido de selenio inferior a 0,04 ppm. En el mes de marzo, un grupo (Se+) fue suplementado con selenio (Deposel®) y el otro grupo (Se-) se mantuvo sin suplementación. Muestras de sangre fueron obtenidas de cada vaquilla previo a la suplementación y luego mensualmente en 10 ocasiones. La FOE se determinó utilizando la técnica descrita por Schalm. La actividad de GSH-Px se midió usando un reactivo comercial (Ransel®). La suplementación con selenio incrementó la actividad de GSH-Px a valores considerados adecuados (> 130 U/g Hb). En el grupo Se-, la actividad de GSH-Px fluctuó entre 60-100 U/g Hb. La FOE no registró diferencias entre grupos a la concentración de NaCl 0,55%; sin embargo, ambos grupos mostraron una disminución de la FOE, es decir un aumento en la resistencia de las membranas, desde septiembre, coincidente con el periodo de primavera en el hemisferio sur. Al parecer la pradera en este periodo favorece el aporte de nutrientes antioxidantes relevantes en la protección de las membranas.

Selenium is a part of antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px; E.C.1.11.1.9). In cattle, the selenium deficiency has been associated with decreased activity of glutathione peroxidase leading to an increase in oxidative damage of cells. The oxidative stress in erythrocytes from cows can be estimated by erythrocyte osmotic fragility test (EOF). To assess EOF as biomarker of oxidative stress in cattle grazing on pastures with low selenium content during different seasons of the year, two groups of sixteen heifers each were used. They were grazed on pastures with 0.04 ppm selenium content. In March one group (Se+) was supplemented with selenium (Deposel®) and another (Se-) was maintained unsupplemented. Blood samples were obtained from each heifer prior to supplementation and then one time each month for ten months. The EOF was determined using a technique described by Schalm. The GSH-Px activity was measured using a commercial kit (Ransel®). The GSH-Px activity was increased by selenium supplementation to adequate levels (> 130 U/g Hb). The GSH-Px activity in Se- group was 60-100 U/g Hb. No differences between groups were detected in the EOF values, at 0.55% NaCl concentration; however, both groups showed decreased EOF values after September, coincident with the spring season in the southern hemisphere. Seemingly in this period, the more rapidly growing pasture grass increased in levels of some others factors that lead to increased protection against oxidative damage to erythrocytes.
