Abstract Crude glycerin is a byproduct of the biodiesel industry and has been widely used in ruminant diets as a source of energy, usually in place of corn, primarily during periods of drought in tropical regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of including levels of the crude glycerin of low purity (0, 6, 12 and 18%) replacing corn in the diets of goats on the carcass characteristics, tissue composition, meat cuts yield and physicochemical parameters of meat. Forty males castrated without defined racial pattern goats an initial average weight of 19.70 ± 2.30 kg were slaughtered after 86 days. Diets content 0 and 6% crude glycerin promoted similar responses to the analyzed variables, except for pH and breast weight. No differences were observed to total digestible nutrients, slaughter body weight, commercial cut yield leg tissue composition and physicochemical parameters of meat. Crude glycerin can be included up to 12% without losses on carcass weight and meat cuts, leg composition, and meat quality. The inclusion of crude glycerin containing 63.06% glycerol and 45.57% lipids could be effective in partial replacement of corn in diets for confined goats in tropical areas.

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a new three-parameter distribution by compounding the Nadarajah-Haghighi and geometric distributions, which can be interpreted as a truncated Marshall-Olkin extended Weibull. The compounding procedure is based on the work by Marshall and Olkin 1997. We prove that the new distribution can be obtained as a compound model with mixing exponential distribution. It can have decreasing, increasing, upside-down bathtub, bathtub-shaped, constant and decreasing-increasing-decreasing failure rate functions depending on the values of the parameters. Some mathematical properties of the new distribution are studied including moments and quantile function. The maximum likelihood estimation procedure is discussed and a particle swarm optimization algorithm is provided for estimating the model parameters. The flexibility of the new model is illustrated with an application to a real data set.

INTRODUCTION: In the State of Amazonas, particularly in the capital Manaus, meningitis has affected populations of different cultures and social strata over the years. Bacterial meningitis is caused by several different species and represents a major issue of public health importance. The present study reports the meningitis case numbers with different etiologies in Amazonas from January 1976 to December 2012. METHODS: Since the 1970s, the (currently named) Tropical Medicine Foundation of Doutor Heitor Vieira Dourado [Fundação de Medicina Tropical Doutor Heitor Vieira Dourado (FMT-HVD)] has remained a reference center in Amazonas for the treatment of meningitis through the diagnosis and notification of cases and the confirmation of such cases using specific laboratory tests. RESULTS: The foundation has achieved coverage of over 90% of the state medical records for many years. Between 1990 and 2012, meningitis cases caused by Haemophilus influenzae decreased with the introduction of the H. influenzae vaccine. Meningococcal disease previously had a higher frequency of serogroup B disease, but starting in 2008, the detection of serogroup C increased gradually and has outpaced the detection of serogroup B. Recently, surveillance has improved the etiological definition of viral meningitis at FMT-HVD, with enteroviruses, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) prevailing in this group of pathogens. With the advent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), cryptococcal meningitis has become an important disease in Amazonas. Additionally, infectious meningitis is an important burden in the State of Amazonas. CONCLUSIONS: Changes in the epidemiological profile for the different etiology-defined cases are the result of continuous epidemiological surveillance and laboratory capacity improvements and control measures, such as Haemophilus influenzae vaccination.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of young chickens in the first two weeks of life through digital images processing, for the determination of the best condition of animal welfare. The experiment was accomplished at two buildings with furnace with indirect air heating, used for creation of 15,200 broiler chickens by building, during one single productive cycle. For the production of digital images, two video cameras were installed by building. One of the cameras had an inclination of 45º and the other a 90º in relation to the ground. The images were analyzed for each daily climatic condition. Then, they were binarized and processed through grouping/dispersion descriptor and correlated with the values of temperature of the air. Correlation was observed between the descriptor and the values of temperature of the air. Images obtained by the camera positioned at 45º had the highest correlation. From the data obtained can be observed that the grouping/dispersion and the behavior of the young chickens can be used as indicator of the states of thermal comfort and that the descriptor was efficient for the quantification.

Currently, the national and international markets are stressing actions for environmental preservation, including data collection regarding concentrations or emission of harmful gases generated from animal production. The lack of information regarding this subject is the reason for this study which is to diagnose the concentrations of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide associated with the thermal comfort of broiler chickens in poultry houses. Two different types of air renovation for heating were studied: ventilation by negative pressure and by positive pressure, during winter in the southern region of Brazil. For evaluation of the thermal environment, randomized blocks were used in split-plot design with two repetitions. The index of the black globe's temperature and humidity indicated the best conditions for thermal comfort environment in the first week of the life of the birds for positive pressure of the system. The highest gas concentrations were detected in the morning for both air renovation methods, with concentrations within the acceptable levels for good bird development.

This research had as objective the analysis of ceramic tiles and aluminum roof, commonly used in animal facilities, for two different heights, under Brazilian Winter conditions. The experiment used reduced models of poultry houses (scale 1:10) and the analysis was made by the values of Thermal Load of Radiation (TLR) and of Black Globe and Humidity Index (BGHI), at different times along the experiment. The trial was conducted in randomized complete block design. The statistical interpretation of the experimental data was made through the variance and regression analysis. For the qualitative factors (roof types and height), the means were compared using the Tukey's and/or F test, at 5% level of probability. For the quantitative factors, the models were chosen based on the significance of the regression coefficients, applying the t test, at 5% level of probability, the determination coefficient and the studied phenomena. It was verified through this experiment that during the hours of more intense cold, all the coverings caused thermal discomfort and all the prototypes had relative humidity above the tolerable maximum for the animal comfort.
