Objective: To assess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic according to social vulnerability by areas of Belo Horizonte (BH), aiming at strategies for vaccination. Methods: Ecological study with mortality analysis, according to census tracts classified by the Health Vulnerability Index, a composite indicator that includes socioeconomic and sanitation variables. Deaths due to natural causes and COVID-19 were obtained from the “Mortality Information System”, between the 10th and 43rd epidemiological weeks (EW) of 2020. Excess mortality was calculated by a time series model, considering observed deaths by EW, between 2015 and 2019, for census tracts. Mortality rates (MR) were calculated and age-standardized =using population estimates from 2010 census. Results: Excess mortality in BH was 16.1% (n =1524): 11.0%, 18.8% and 17.3% in the low, intermediate and high vulnerability areas, respectively. The differences between observed and expected age-standardized MR by natural causes were equal to 59/100,000 inhabitants in BH, increasing from 31 to 77 and 95/100,000 inhabitants, in the areas of low, intermediate and high vulnerability, respectively. There was an aging gradient in COVID-19 MR, ranging from 4 to 611/100,000 inhabitants among individuals of 20-39 years and 75+ years. The COVID-19 MR per 100,000 elderly (60+ years) was 292 in BH, increasing from 179 to 354 and 476, in the low, intermediate and high vulnerability areas, respectively. Conclusion: Inequalities in mortality, particularly among the elderly, combined with the limited supply of doses, demonstrate the importance of prioritizing socially vulnerable areas during vaccination against COVID-19.

Objetivo: Avaliar a mortalidade por áreas de Belo Horizonte (BH) durante a pandemia de COVID-19 conforme vulnerabilidade social, visando estratégia de vacinação. Métodos: Estudo ecológico com análise de mortalidade, segundo setores censitários classificados pelo Índice de Vulnerabilidade da Saúde, composto por indicadores de saneamento e socioeconômicos. RESUMO Os canabinoides compreendem os endocanabinoides, fitocanabinoides e os canabinoides sintéticos e desempenham ações no sistema nervoso central e periférico. Uma quantidade enorme de publicações tem sido lançada nos últimos anos, embora a cannabis seja conhecida por milênios. Os Departamentos Científicos da Academia Brasileira de Neurologia descreveram as evidências do uso médico em suas áreas. A literatura está em constantes mudanças e possíveis novas evidências podem surgir nos próximos dias ou meses. A prescrição dessas substâncias deve ser discutida com os pacientes e suas famílias, com conhecimento sobre eventos adversos e sua eficácia.

ABSTRACT Cannabinoids comprehend endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids, and synthetic cannabinoids, with actions both in the central and peripherical nervous systems. A considerable amount of publications have been made in recent years, although cannabis has been known for over a thousand years. Scientific Departments from the Brazilian Academy of Neurology described evidence for medical use in their areas. Literature is constantly changing, and possible new evidence can emerge in the next days or months. Prescription of these substances must be discussed with patients and their families, with knowledge about adverse events and their efficacy.

The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic challenges public health systems around the world. Tropical countries will face complex epidemiological scenarios involving the simultaneous transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) with viruses transmitted by Aedes aegypti. The occurrence of arboviral diseases with COVID-19 in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region presents challenges and opportunities for strengthening health services, surveillance and control programs. Financing of training, equipment and reconversion of hospital spaces will have a negative effect on already the limited resource directed to the health sector. The strengthening of the diagnostic infrastructure reappears as an opportunity for the national reference laboratories. Sharing of epidemiological information for the modeling of epidemiological scenarios allows collaboration between health, academic and scientific institutions. The fear of contagion by COVID-19 is constraining people with arboviral diseases to search for care which can lead to an increase in serious cases and could disrupt the operation of vector-control programs due to the reluctance of residents to open their doors to health personnel. Promoting intense community participation along with the incorporation of long lasting innovations in vector control offers new opportunities for control. The COVID-19 pandemic offers challenges and opportunities that must provoke positive behavioral changes and encourage more permanent self-care actions.

ABSTRACT The use of natural substances and micronutritional approaches has been suggested as a therapeutic alternative to benefit the bone healing associated with no side effects. Nevertheless, the influence of micronutritional interventions with therapeutic proprieties on the bone repair has yet to be intensely evaluated, and no evidence is available exploring the impact of micronutrient supplementation on the peri-implant bone healing. Objective This study investigated the effect of micronutrients supplementation on the bone repair around implants. Material and Methods One screw-shaped titanium implant was inserted in each tibia of each rat, which were assigned to: daily administration, for 30 d, of the placebo solution (Placebo group-n:18) or micronutrients supplementation (Micronutrients group-n:18), based on calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D3 intake. After, the animals were sacrificed. One of the implants was removed by applying a counter-torque force to evaluate the force to rupture the bone-implant interface. The other implant was evaluated by microcomputed tomography (CT) examination to determine the bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and the bone volume (BV/TV). Results No statistically significant differences were observed between the groups for both counter-torque values and microCT parameters (p>0.05). Conclusion Within the limits of this study, micronutrients supplementation did not provide additional benefits to the bone healing around dental implants.

Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effect of resveratrol against putative periodontal pathogens during the progression of experimental periodontitis in rats. Periodontitis was induced in rats in one of the first molars chosen to receive a ligature. Animals were assigned to one of two groups: daily administration of the placebo solution (control group, n = 12) or 10 mg/Kg of resveratrol (RESV group, n = 12). The therapies were administered systemically for 30 days, for 19 days before periodontitis induction and then for another 11 days. Then, the presence and concentrations of Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in the cotton ligatures collected from the first molars were evaluated using real-time PCR. Inter-group comparisons of the microbiological outcomes revealed that no differences were detected for P. gingivalis, T. forsythia and A. actinomycetemcomitans levels (p > 0.05). Continuous use of resveratrol did not promote additional benefits in microbiological outcomes during experimental periodontitis in rats.

Resumo Introdução: Atualmente, a população idosa do Brasil está sofrendo aumento significativo. O envelhecimento é um processo fisiológico que causa alterações nos diversos órgãos, inclusive no rim. A biópsia renal é de suma importância para esclarecimento das alterações morfológicas dessas entidades. Objetivos: Os objetivos deste trabalho foram realizar a análise clínica e epidemiológica dos pacientes idosos e avaliar a prevalência das principais glomerulopatias que os acometem. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo retrospectivo e descritivo, com revisão de 104 laudos de biópsias renais de idosos, com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos, realizados no Serviço de Nefropatologia da Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM), entre o período de janeiro de 1996 e dezembro de 2010. Os pacientes foram agrupados segundo síndrome clínica. Resultados: Foram revistas 104 biópsias de pacientes idosos. Destes, 52,94% pertenciam ao gênero masculino. A Hipertensão Arterial foi encontrada em 50,54% dos pacientes. A síndrome clínica predominante foi a Síndrome Nefrótica (42,17%). A maioria das doenças foi de origem glomerular. As podocitopatias foram as glomerulopatias mais prevalentes (34,07%). Discussão/Conclusão: Por meio dessa revisão, observamos que a síndrome nefrótica foi a principal síndrome clínica e as podocitopatias foram as glomerulopatias com mais prevalência no grupo de pacientes idosos submetidos à biópsia renal. A análise das biópsias renais dos pacientes idosos é de fundamental importância, uma vez que o conhecimento das manifestações clínicas das principais glomerulopatias que acometem esse grupo auxiliam a elucidação diagnóstica e no estabelecimento da conduta terapêutica.

Abstract Introduction: Currently, the elderly population of Brazil is suffering significant increase. Aging is a physiological process that causes changes in various organs, including the kidney. A kidney biopsy is of paramount importance to clarify the morphological changes of these entities. Objectives: The aim of this work was to conduct a clinical epidemiological analysis of elderly patients and evaluate the prevalence of major glomerulopathies that affect. Methods: This is a retrospective and descriptive, with a review of 104 reports of renal biopsies of elderly aged over 60 years, performed in the Nefropatologia Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM), between periods January 1996 and December 2010. Patients were grouped according to clinical syndrome. Results: We reviewed 104 biopsies of elderly patients. Of these, 52.94% were male. The Hypertension was found in 50.54% of patients. The clinical syndrome was the predominant nephrotic syndrome (42.17%). Most disease was glomerular origin. The glomerulopathy was the most prevalent (34.07%). Discussion/Conclusion: Through this review, we noted that the nephrotic syndrome was the main clinical syndrome and Podocytophaties glomerulopathies were more prevalent in the group of elderly patients undergoing renal biopsy. The analysis of renal biopsies of elderly patients is of paramount importance, since knowledge of the clinical manifestations of major glomerulopathies that affect this group, to assist in establishing the diagnosis and therapeutic management.

OBJETIVOS: estimar o custo por ano de vida ajustado por qualidade (QALY) com foco no tempo entre o trauma e a cirurgia.MÉTODOS: foi feita uma coorte retrospectiva com amostra sistemática com todos os pacientes internados no hospital do estudo pelo Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) durante três anos. Compararam-se duas estratégias de tratamento, uma precoce, se o paciente fosse operado até o quarto dia, e outra tardia, se após o quarto dia. O custo foi o direto médico do ponto de vista do SUS, colhido diretamente do Sistema de Gerenciamento da Tabela de Procedimentos, Medicamentos e Custos de Materiais de Implantes (OPM) do SUS (Sigtap), para contagem dos custos associados ao hospital, aos honorários médicos e aos implantes usados, e o desfecho utilidade foi medido indiretamente por meio do EuroQOL-5D, instrumento mundialmente usado e transformado em utilidade pela normativa do Centro de Desenvolvimento e Planejamento Regional de Minas Gerais (Cedeplar) de 2013.RESULTADOS: a amostra contou com 110 pacientes, 27 no grupo precoce e 83 no tardio. Variáveis confundidoras foram controladas, idade, gênero, risco anestésico (ASA) e tipo de fratura e de cirurgia. As amostras se revelaram homogêneas quanto a essas variáveis. O custo por QALY da estratégia precoce foi de R$ 5.129,42 e da estratégia tardia, de R$ 8.444,50.CONCLUSÃO: a estratégia precoce demonstra dominância em relação à tardia neste estudo.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) focusing on the length of time between trauma and surgery.METHODS: A retrospective cohort with systematic sampling was conducted among all the patients who were admitted to the study hospital through the Brazilian National Health System (SUS) over a three-year period. Two treatment strategies were compared: early treatment, if the patient was operated up to the fourth day; and late treatment, if this was done after the fourth day. The cost was the direct medical cost from the point of view of SUS, which was gathered from the management system, from the SUS table of procedures, medications and implant material costs (SIGTAP), to account for the costs associated with the hospital, medical fees and implants used. The outcome of usefulness was measured indirectly by means of EuroQOL-5D, which is an instrument used worldwide, and these measurements were transformed into usefulness by means of the standard rules of the Regional Planning and Development Center of Minas Gerais (CEDEPLAR) of 2013.RESULTS: The sample included 110 patients: 27 in the early group and 83 in the late group. The confounding variables of age, gender, anesthetic risk (ASA), fracture type and surgery type were controlled for. The samples were shown to be homogenous with regard to these variables. The cost per QALY of the early strategy was R$ 5,129.42 and the cost of the late strategy was R$ 8,444.50.CONCLUSION: The early strategy was highly favorable in relation to the late strategy in this study.

O objetivo do presente estudo consistiu em verificar se as alterações no desempenho no teste de salto com contra movimento (CMJ) estão associadas aos incrementos obtidos nos testes para avaliação da capacidade funcional. Para a avaliação da capacidade funcional, realizaram-se os testes 1RM, sentar e levantar e 8 foot up and go, após seis semanas de treinamento de força. A amostra voluntária foi constituída por 59 idosas saudáveis e destreinadas, divididas em grupo controle (GC: n=17) e experimental (GE: n=42). O GE obteve incrementos significativos nos testes CMJ (22,5%) 1RM (21,5%), sentar e levantar (22,8%) e 8 foot up and go (24%). No GE, incrementos nos valores do CMJ correlacionaram-se significativamente (p<0,001) com os incrementos nos testes de 1RM (r=0,88), sentar e levantar (r=0,82) e 8 foot up and go (r=-0,75); e apresentaram diferenças significativas (p<0,05) em relação ao GC em todas as variáveis. Sendo assim, é possível sugerir a utilização do CMJ como indicador de funcionalidade em mulheres idosas, visto que o teste parece representar adequadamente as alterações funcionais decorrentes de um período de treinamento de força de seis semanas em mulheres idosas.

This study aimed to verify whether changes in performance in the countermovement jump test (CMJ) are associated with the improvements observed in the functional capacity tests. Methods: Functional capacity was measured with the 1RM, the 30 seconds chair-standing and the 8 foot up and go tests, after six weeks of strength training. The voluntary sample was comprised of 59 healthy untrained elderly women, who were randomly divided into experimental (EG = 42) and control groups (CG = 17). The EG showed a statistically significant increase in the CMJ (22.5%), 1RM (21.5%), 30 seconds chair-standing (22.8%) and 8 foot up and go (24%) results. The increases observed in the CMJ test showed a very high significant association (p <0.001) with the increases observed in the functional capacity tests: 1RM test (r = 0.88), 30 seconds chair-standing test (r = 0.82), and 8 foot up and go test (r = -0.75). Such increases were not seen in the CG. Results suggest that CMJ is a good test for measuring functional capacity in elderly women. The CMJ test seems to adequately express the changes in functional capacity observed over a six-week period of strength training.

Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho, morfometria de órgãos e histologia intestinal de suínos, em fase de terminação tardia, alimentados com cana-de-açúcar em substituição ao milho. Foram utilizados 36 suínos machos, castrados, com peso inicial médio de 103,86kg, idade média de 153,5 dias e peso final médio de 126,89kg e idade média final de 179,5 dias. Utilizou-se delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com tratamentos repetidos, distribuídos em: 3 tratamentos, 3 blocos e 2 repetições de tratamento por bloco, a perfazer 6 repetições. Os tratamentos utilizados foram: ração convencional; ração convencional, com substituição de 30% do milho pela cana-de-açúcar e; ração convencional, com substituição de 30% do milho pela cana-de-açúcar e com os nutrientes corrigidos, exceto a energia. Os suínos que consumiram dietas com cana-de-açúcar, em substituição parcial ao milho, ingeriram mais ração e tiveram pior conversão alimentar, porém não houve diferença no ganho de peso observado nos animais submetidos aos tratamentos avaliados. O custo de alimentação por kg de suíno produzido foi menor com a utilização de 30% de cana-de-açúcar em substituição ao milho, com correção dos nutrientes. Os tratamentos não influenciaram a morfometria dos órgãos. Observou-se maior altura de vilosidades no duodeno, jejuno e íleo e maior profundidade de cripta no duodeno e jejuno dos animais, alimentados com rações composta de cana-de-açúcar. Em suínos na fase de terminação tardia, recomenda-se a utilização de 30% de cana-de-açúcar integral em substituição ao milho, com correção dos nutrientes, pois promove melhor eficiência econômica.

This study aimed to evaluate the performance, organ morphology and intestinal histology of growing pigs in late termination, fed sugar cane instead of corn. Thirty six barrows with approximately 153.5 days of age were used, with an average initial weight of 103.86kg and final mean weight and age of 126.89kg and 179.5 days. The experimental design was a randomized block with repeated treatments, with 3 treatments, 3 blocks and 2 replicates per treatment block, completing 6 repetitions. The treatments were: conventional diet; conventional diet, with 30% replacement of corn by sugar cane, and conventional diet, with 30% replacement of corn by sugar cane and the corrected nutrients except energy. Pigs fed diets with sugar cane instead of corn partially consumed more feed and had lower feed efficiency, but there was no difference in weight gain observed in animals subjected to the treatments. The cost of feed per kg of pig produced was lower with the use of 30% sugar cane instead of corn, with the correct nutrients. Treatments did not affect the morphology of organs. There was greater villi height in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum and increased crypt depth in the duodenum and jejunum of animals fed diets containing sugar cane. In pigs in the late finishing fase is recommended to use 30% of whole sugar cane replacement of corn with the correct nutrients, it promotes better economic efficiency.

O Anacardium othonianum Rizz. é uma espécie frutífera e medicinal nativa do Cerrado brasileiro. As plantas adultas distinguem-se das demais espécies do gênero existente nesse bioma em função do seu porte arbóreo. Sua exploração ocorre de forma extrativista e muitas vezes em caráter predatório. Sob esse contexto, a micropropagação tem dado significativas contribuições na propagação e preservação de caracteres de interesse em diversas espécies de plantas e, desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de diferentes concentrações de sais e volumes do meio de cultura no cultivo in vitro de A. othonianum Rizz. No ensaio (I), testou-se dois meios de cultura (MS e WPM) e três concentrações de sais (100, 50 e 25%) dispostos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. No ensaio (II), testou-se dois meios de cultura MS (50%) e WPM (100%) e cinco volumes de meio (10, 15, 20, 25 e 30 mL por tubo de ensaio) utilizando delineamento inteiramente casualizado, conduzido em arranjo fatorial 2 x 5. Após 30 e 60 dias de cultivo avaliou-se: porcentagem de sobrevivência de plântulas, comprimento médio de plântulas e folhas e, número médio de folhas e gemas por explante. Concluiu-se que os meios MS (50 e 25%) e WPM (100 e 50%) foram os mais eficientes na regeneração de plântulas. Foram observadas as melhores respostas no meio MS (50%) com volumes de 15 e 25 mL, desta forma sugere-se a utilização do volume de 15 mL visando maior economia.

Anacardium othonianum Rizz. is a medicinal plant species that is native to the Brazilian savannah. Adult plants are different from other genus members in this ecosystem due to their size, and efforts to locate the plants may lead to their extraction from the savannah and, frequently, plant death. Micropropagation has played a significant role in the propagation and preservation of specimens of several plant species; therefore, this study evaluated the effect of various salt concentrations and culture medium volumes on the in vitro cultivation of A. othonianum Rizz. Trial (I) evaluated two culture media (MS and WPM) and three salt concentrations (100, 50 and 25%) in a completely randomized design. Trial (II) evaluated two culture media and salt concentrations, MS (50%) and WPM (100%), and five medium volumes (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mL per test tube) as a 2 x 5 factorial in a completely randomized design. After 30 and 60 days of growth, the percentage of plantlet survival, average plantlet and leaf lengths and the average number of leaves and buds per explant were evaluated. The MS (50 and 25%) media and WPM (100 and 50%) media were the most effective for plantlet regeneration. The best responses were observed in 15- and 25-mL volumes of the MS (50%) medium. Therefore, the use of a 15-mL volume is suggested for greater medium economy.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o perfil dos casos de fixação rotatória C1-C2, seu tratamento e complicações. MÉTODOS: Estudo retrospectivo de 35 casos com fixação rotatória C1-C2 no período de 1982 a 2008. Foram analisados a idade, sexo, quadro clínico, classificação, tratamento e complicações. RESULTADOS: Dos 35 casos avaliados, 19 eram meninas e 16 meninos, sendo a idade média de 6,9 anos. O principal sintoma foi dor (85%), seguida por deformidade (71%) e perda de mobilidade cervical (62%). Foram encontrados de acordo com a classificação Fielding e Hawkins 11 casos tipo I, 14 tipo II e 5 casos tipo III. Nenhum caso foi classificado como tipo IV. Em cinco casos a classificação não pode ser obtida. O tratamento mais utilizado foi o uso do colar cervical (20 casos), seguido pela tração (seis casos) e a artrodese C1-C2 (seis casos). CONCLUSÃO: A fixação rotatória C1-C2 é uma doença muito mais frequente na infância, em geral causada por uma contratura do músculo esternocleidomastoideo seguida de uma IVAS. Na maioria dos casos a fixação é reversível somente com tratamento conservador, em especial se o tratamento for precoce. Em casos com evolução tardia, pode ser necessária a tração mentoneira ou craniana e nos casos irredutíveis a artrodese C1-C2.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the profile, treatment and complications of patients with C1-C2 rotatory fixation. METHODS: A total of 35 patients with diagnosis of C1-C2 rotatory fixation at IOT-HCFMUSP, between 1982 and 2008, were retrospectively studied. Age, gender, clinical features, classification, type of treatment and complications were evaluated. RESULTS: Of a total of 35 cases, 19 were girls and 16 were boys, with a mean age of 6.9 years. The most common symptom was pain (85%), followed by deformity (71%) and loss of cervical mobility (62%). According to Fielding and Hawkins classification, we found 11 cases type I, 14 cases type II, and 5 cases type III. There were no type IV cases. In 5 cases we couldn't obtain classification. The use of collar was the most used treatment (20 cases). Traction was performed in 6 cases and C1-C2 arthrodesis in 6 cases. CONCLUSION: C1-C2 rotatory fixation is a disorder more common in children. The cause is a contracture of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, usually after an upper airway tract infection. The fixation is reduced with conservative treatment, mainly with early treatment. When treatment starts late, the use of cervical traction can be necessary and for irreducible cases C1-C2 arthrodesis.

RESULTADOS: De los 35 casos, 19 eran niñas y 16 niños, siendo 6,9 años la edad promedio. El principal síntoma fue dolor (85%), seguido por deformidad (71%) y pérdida de movilidad cervical (62%). Fueron encontrados 11 casos tipo I de Fielding y Hawkins, 14 casos tipo II y 5 casos tipo III. Ningún caso fue clasificado como de tipo IV. En 5 casos, no se pudo obtener la clasificación. El tratamiento más utilizado fue el uso del collar cervical (20 casos), seguido por la tracción (6 casos) y la artrodesis C1-C2 (6 casos). CONCLUSIÓN: La fijación rotatoria C1-C2 es una enfermedad mucho más frecuente en la infancia, causada generalmente por una contractura del músculo esternocleidomastoideo seguida de una IVAS. En la mayoría de los casos, la fijación es reversible solamente con tratamiento conservador, principalmente si el tratamiento fuere precoz. En casos con evolución tardía, puede ser necesaria la tracción mentoniana o craneana y, en los casos irreductibles, la artrodesis C1-C2.

OBJETIVOS: Comparar alterações histológicas induzidas por medicação anti-glaucomatosa na conjuntiva de coelhos. MÉTODOS: Cinqüenta coelhos da raça Nova Zelândia foram divididos em 5 grupos de 10 animais. Os olhos esquerdos foram tratados com uma gota diária de bimatoprosta 0,03%, travoprosta 0,004%, latanoprosta 0,005%, maleato de timolol 0,5% ou lágrimas artificiais contendo cloreto de benzalcônio (BAK) por 30 dias. Os olhos direitos serviram como controles. Foram realizadas biópsias conjuntivais límbicas superiores no 8º e 30º dias em 5 coelhos de cada grupo. A conjuntiva foi fixada com formaldeído 10%, seguido por coloração de HE e PAS. Foi realizada análise quantitativa morfohistométrica para avaliar os seguintes parâmetros: infiltrado inflamatório, espessura epitelial, número de células caliciformes, diâmetro e número de vasos sanguíneos. RESULTADOS: No 8º e 30º dias de tratamento, todos os grupos, exceto aquele que recebeu lágrimas artificiais, exibiram infiltrado inflamatório difuso, composto por linfócitos e neutrófilos, sendo mais denso no grupo timolol do que nos grupos dos análogos de prostaglandinas. No 30º dia, o grupo timolol apresentou um aumento na densidade de colágeno subepitelial e um aumento significativo da espessura epitelial (p=0,0035). A densidade de células caliciformes aumentou significativamente no 8º dia no grupo tratado com travoprosta (p=0,0006), e no 30º dia nos grupos tratados com bimatoprosta (p=0,0021) e latanoprosta (p=0,009). CONCLUSÕES: Embora tenha sido observado um infiltrado inflamatório difuso e moderado nos olhos tratados com análogos de prostaglandinas, não houve alterações na espessura epitelial conjuntival ou densidade colágena subepitelial com essas medicações, sugerindo que essas drogas induzem menores alterações que o maleato de timolol na conjuntiva de coelhos.

PURPOSE: To compare histological changes induced by antiglaucoma medications in the rabbit conjunctiva. METHODS: Fifty New Zealand rabbits were divided in 5 groups of 10 animals. The left eyes were treated daily with one drop of bimatoprost 0.03%, travoprost 0.004%, latanoprost 0.005%, timolol maleate 0.5% or artificial tears containing benzalkonium chloride (BAK) for 30 days. The right eyes served as controls. Superior limbic conjunctival biopsies were performed at the 8th and 30th day in 5 rabbits of each group. The conjunctiva was fixed with 10% formaldehyde, followed by HE and PAS staining. Morphohistometric quantitative analyses were performed to evaluate the following parameters: inflammatory infiltrate, epithelial thickness, number of goblet cells, diameter and number of blood vessels. RESULTS: At the 8th and 30th posttreatment days, all groups, except one that received artificial tears, exhibited a diffuse inflammatory infiltrate, composed by lymphocytes and neutrophils, which was denser in the timolol group than in the prostaglandin (PG) analogues groups. At the 30th day, the timolol group also showed an increased subepithelial collagen density and a significant increase in epithelial thickness (p=0.0035). The goblet cell density was significantly increased at the 8th day in the group treated with travoprost (p=0.0006), and at the 30th day in those treated with bimatoprost (p=0.0021) and latanoprost (p=0.009). CONCLUSIONS: Although a moderate, diffuse inflammatory infiltrate was observed in PG-treated eyes, no changes in conjunctival epithelial thickness or subconjunctival collagen density were observed with these medications, suggesting that these drugs induce fewer changes than timolol maleate in the rabbit conjunctiva.
