Abstract This paper is regarding the statistical coexistence analysis between a cluster of International Mobile Telecommunication 2020 (IMT-2020) Base Stations and an Aircraft Earth Station (AES) operating during flight time in the L Band on a final approach. We assess the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of interference-over-noise ratio (INR) considering the fuselage attenuation contribution and compare it with the AES protection criteria. Our coexistence analysis approach considers the use of a high gain AES commercial antenna model, for an aircraft at two different altitudes, 187 m and 83 m, for 3600 m and 1600 m of horizontal distance from the runway threshold, respectively. Therefore, considering the IMT-2020 suburban scenario near the airport, simulation results presented an INR that met the protection criteria for 100% and 99.95% of the time for the distances of 3600 m and 1600 m from the runway, respectively, making the spectrum sharing feasible between systems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time in the literature that fuselage attenuation considering part of the plane, in the L-band is presented in a statistical coexistence analysis.

Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

ABSTRACT Exploitation of groundwater resources with no proper characterization of water reserves jeopardizes the quantity and quality of water available in the future. A major challenge is finding appropriate methods or coefficients to evaluate the carrying capacity of the aquifer. The objective of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively characterize water reserves to provide information and management strategies for the rational use of available water resources in an alluvial aquifer in the Brazilian Northeastern semi-arid region. Shallow and medium-depth wells were analyzed. Water tables were monitored in the dry and wet seasons to calculate water reserves. Groundwater samples were collected for the determination of water quality for irrigation purposes. The increase in agricultural activities is jeopardizing the sustainability of the aquifer’s water, as reserves are not sufficient to meet this demand. Groundwater quality is not limiting for agricultural use. Converting surface irrigation into localized methods will potentially increase water productivity and consequently the irrigated area. This study provides data and makes it possible to recommend appropriate strategies for the exploitation of groundwater resources for the maintenance of agricultural activities under semi-arid conditions, and to avoid overexploitation.

Objective: To evaluate the association between abuse of and dependence on different psychoactive substances and the presence of anxiety disorders in a sample of young adults from a city in southern Brazil. Methods: Between 2007 and 2009, we carried out a cross-sectional, population-based study of individuals aged 18-24 years who lived in Pelotas, a city in southern Brazil. We evaluated anxiety disorders using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0 (MINI), and use of psychoactive substances with the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST 2.0/0MS). We used Fisher’s exact test for univariate analysis, and Poisson regression models with robust variance for multivariable analysis. Results: The sample consisted of 1,560 young adults. The overall prevalence of abuse/dependence was 26.9% for alcohol, 24.9% for tobacco, and 7.3% for illicit substances. Individuals with agoraphobia had a 32% higher prevalence of tobacco abuse/dependence (prevalence ratio [PR] = 1.32 [95%CI 1.01-1.74]). Individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) had a 2.41-fold (95%CI 1.22-4.77) and 1.76-fold (95%CI 1.00-3.11) higher prevalence of illicit substance abuse/dependence, respectively. Conclusion: In this population-based sample, we found associations between GAD, PTSD, and increased prevalence of illicit substance abuse/dependence. In addition, individuals with agoraphobia seem to have increased tobacco abuse/dependence.

Abstract Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) theileri is a flagellated protozoan that infects ruminants and it displays high genetic diversity. In this study, we investigated the prevalence rates of this protozoan based on hemoculture and molecular diagnosis. The isolates of T. theileri thus obtained were characterized by molecular markers SSU rDNA and gGAPDH and molecular diagnosis based on Cathepsin L-like gene (PCR-TthCATL). The PCR-TthCATL and hemoculture indicated an overall prevalence rate of 8.13%, and the CATL derived sequence named IB was identified for the first time in cattle in the western Amazon region, as well as IF in Brazil. We also describe a possible new PCR-TthCATL derived sequence in cattle, designated IL.

This study investigates the mechanisms of interaction between benzophenone derivatives and cruzain and Llacys1 (the protein expressed by cysteine protease gene isoform 1 of L. amazonensis) by homology modelling, docking and molecular dynamics simulation. The results predict that the same binding site in cruzain and Llacys1 is involved in complexes with benzophenone derivatives that cause non-competitive inhibition of the enzymes. The Gln residue is conserved among the enzymes, and is shown to be a key residue in the allosteric site of these cysteine proteases and in the interaction with benzophenone derivatives. The binding free energies highlight that the main energetic term contributing to the cruzain- and Llacys1-benzophenone compound interactions is the van der Waals term. Experimental results showed that benzophenone derivatives are promising potential inhibitors of cysteine proteases. Moreover, we found that two benzophenone derivatives are the most effective inhibitors of cruzain and L. amazonensis cysteine protease.

BACKGROUND The infection led by Trypanosoma cruzi persists in mammalian tissues causing an inflammatory imbalance. Carvedilol (Cv), a non-selective beta blocker drug indicated to treat heart failure and antihypertensive has shown to promote antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties which might improve the inflammation induced by T. cruzi. OBJECTIVES Evaluate the role of Cv on the inflammatory response of C57BL/6 mice acutely infected with the Colombian strain of T. cruzi. METHODS Animals were infected with the Colombian strain of T. cruzi and treated with Cv (25 mg/kg/day), benznidazole (Bz) (100 mg/kg/day) or their combination. On the 28th day of infection and 23 days of treatment, the euthanasia occurred, and the heart preserved for histopathological, oxidative stress (SOD, catalase, TBARs, carbonylated proteins) and plasma (CCL2, CCL5, TNF, IL-10) analyses. Parasitaemia and survival were assessed along the infection. FINDINGS Cv decreased TBARs, but increased the mortality rate, the parasitaemia and the levels of CCL2, CCL5, catalase and the inflammatory infiltrate in the cardiac tissue. Bz led the reduction of the inflammatory infiltrate and circulating levels of oxidative stress and inflammatory mediators in the infected mice. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that Cv, in this experimental model using the Colombian strain of T. cruzi, caused damage to the host.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Elevated plasma levels of lipids are considered the main modifiable risk factor for the cardiovascular disease. The Point-of-care testing (POCT) method provides quick results and allows anticipating diagnosis and treatment. Objective: To compare the lipid profile results obtained from both POCT and the traditional clinical laboratory. Methods: Fasting blood samples were collected from 111 patients who sought, for any reason, the private medical offices participating on this study. Capillary whole blood samples were analyzed in CardioChek® PA (CCPA) equipment, and the serum samples were analyzed in clinical laboratories (LAB) that have internal and external quality control, with certification. The mean values of each variable of the lipid profile obtained by CCPA and LAB were calculated. Linear regression was used to determine the existence of correlation between the two methods. Results: We observed a positive correlation between the values obtained by CCPA and LAB for all variables of the lipid profile. Our data, extracted from the routine use of CCPA in private medical offices, supports a substantial contribution of the POCT methodology in the detection of the main cardiovascular risk factors. Conclusion: The POCT CardioChek® PA Analyzer is an easy-to-operate tool, with adequate analytical performance and a good correlation with the results of the conventional laboratory method, therefore, considered a reliable method.

In this work, a simple derivation of the variable amplitude method using the variation of parameters to solve a differential equation is presented. The variable amplitude method was originally devised by Tikochinsky in 1977, using the quantum theory of scattering. The method is applied to two model potentials, the rectangular potential barrier and the Eckart potential, both with analytical solutions for the reflection coefficient. Numerical results will be compared with the exact values for several energies. The problem of calculating the reflection coefficient, usually involving extensive algebra as described in several textbooks, is reduced to solving a first order differential equation with initial condition. The method is very simple to apply, representing an attractive tool for teaching introductory quantum mechanics. A simple computer code is available from which reflection coefficients for the Eckart potential can be calculated.

Abstract The widespread use of tubular sections in regions like Western Europe and North America in addition structural and aesthetical reasons can be attributed to the high degree of development of their production technology. Despite this fact their use in Brazil in the past was limited to a few spatial roofs. Currently, the situation in the Brazilian market begins to change caused by the significant increase in the availability of structural hollow sections. This work presents an analysis of "KK" joints with circular hollow sections. A comparison between the analytical design formulations proposed by the Eurocode 3 Part 1.8, the 2nd edition of the CIDECT tubular joint design guide was performed. A finite element model was developed in the ANSYS program for each analysed joint typology. The modelling of a spatial truss made of circular hollow section elements was also performed to enable a comparison between a single joint and the response of the joint as a part of a full scale truss structure.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a product derived from total blood centrifugation, whose use is focused on improving the healing of different tissues, as a result of the growth factors it contains. However, the clinical benefits of this therapy have not been fully established. The objective of this study was to evaluate type I and III collagen gene expression during different phases of the healing process of PRP-treated skin. Eight healthy crossbred geldings, aged 16 and 17 years (16.37±0.52) were used. Three quadrangular-shaped lesions (6.25cm²) were surgically induced in the right and left gluteal regions of all the animals. Twelve hours after induction of the lesions, 0.5mL of PRP was administered in each of the four edges of the wounds (T=treated group) in one of the gluteal regions, randomly chosen. The contralateral region was used as control (NT=non-treated group). The wounds were submitted to daily cleaning with Milli-Q water, and the samples were obtained with a 6mm diameter biopsy Punch. Six skin biopsies were obtained, with the first being performed on the day the lesions were induced (T0), and the others 1 (T1), 2 (T2), 7 (T3), and 14 (T4) days, after the wound was induced. The sixth biopsy (T5) was performed after fully healed of the skin. Evaluation of type I and III collagen gene expression was carried out by the qRT-PCR technique. The data were analyzed by the Bonferroni test, Student t-test, paired t-test, and regression analysis (p<0,05). Difference (p<0.05) between groups were observed for both collagen gene expressions from T1 to T4, being higher in the animals of group T. The peak for type I and III collagen gene expressions occurred in T5 for both groups, but the highest expression was different (p<0.05) from zero time, starting in T3. In the animals of treated group, collagen expression started to establish at T5, while in the horses of NT group, the values remained increased. Local administration of a single PRP dose in cutaneous wound of the gluteal region of horses results in a higher local gene expression of type I and III collagens. However, this expression does not alter the maximum time of macroscopic healing of the wound.

This report describes a survey of microbiology laboratories (n = 467) serving Brazilian hospitals with >10 intensive care beds and/or involved in the government health care adverse event reporting system. Coordinators were interviewed and laboratories classified as follows: Level 0 (no minimal functioning conditions-85.4% of laboratories); Level 1 (minimal functioning conditions but inadequate execution of basic routine-6.7%); Level 2 (minimal functioning conditions and adequate execution of basic routine but no adequate procedures for quality control-5.8%); Level 3 (minimal functioning conditions, adequate execution of basic routine, and adequate procedures for quality control, but no direct communication with the infection control department-0.9%); Level 4 (minimal functioning conditions, adequate execution of basic routine, adequate procedures for quality control, and direct communication with infection control, but no available advanced resources-none); and Level 5 (minimal functioning conditions, adequate execution of basic routine, adequate procedures for quality control, direct communication with infection control, and available advanced resources-0.9%). Twelve laboratories did not perform Ziehl-Neelsen staining; 271 did not have safety cabinets; and >30% without safety cabinets had automated systems. Low quality was associated with serving hospitals not participating in government adverse-event program; private hospitals; nonteaching hospitals; and those outside state capitals. Results may reflect what occurs in many other countries where defining priorities is important due to limited resources.

Computational methods for the calculation of dynamical properties of fluids might consider the system as a continuum or as an assembly of molecules. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation includes molecular resolution, whereas computational fluid dynamics (CFD) considers the fluid as a continuum. This work provides a review of hybrid methods MD/CFD recently proposed in the literature. Theoretical foundations, basic approaches of computational methods, and dynamical properties typically calculated by MD and CFD are first presented in order to appreciate the similarities and differences between these two methods. Then, methods for coupling MD and CFD, and applications of hybrid simulations MD/CFD, are presented.

The objective of this work was to carry out the pyrolysis of coconut residues (Cocos nucifera Linn) and to perform the chemical analysis of charcoal. Charcoal, pirogalyc liquid and non-condensed gases were produced under maximum temperatures of 350ºC, 450ºC and 550ºC. The whole coconut and its endocarp were pyrolysed (ripe and unripe), having as reference the charcoal derived from eucalyptus log (Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake). The gravimetrical yield of whole coconut charcoal pyrolysed under maximum temperature of 350ºC, was superior to the other treatments. The largest yields of condensed gases were obtained from pyrolysis of unripe endocarp under the three pyrolysis temperatures. The highest levels of fixed carbon were given by charcoal derived from ripe endocarp, pyrolysed under maximum temperatures of 450º C and 550ºC. There was equal statistical response between fixed carbon yield from ripe endocarp charcoal and from eucalyptus log, pyrolysed in all the three maximum temperatures analyzed, and whole coconut pyrolysed under 450ºC and 550ºC.
