ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to search for the presence of bacterial and fungal growth in urine samples from cats with urethral obstruction, to identify the causative infectious agents, and to compare select clinical-laboratory parameters with urine culture results after urethral catheterization. Twenty-eight male cats were enrolled in this prospective study. Urethral catheterization was performed aseptically, and the catheter was maintained for 24-48 hours with a sterile closed collection system. No antibiotics were used during this period. The first urine sample was obtained at the time of presentation, and the second, 24-48 hours after catheter removal, both by cystocentesis. Two cats (7.1%) presented a positive bacterial urine culture on the first sample. The frequency of positive urine cultures in the second sample was 52.4% (11/21 cats). One third of bacterial pathogens were Gram-positive, one third were Gram-negative, and one third were mixed isolates. Fungal cultures were all negative. There was significant association of positive urine culture results with pyuria (P=0.0128). A high frequency of positive urine cultures after urinary catheter removal was observed, despite respecting the standards of care for urethral catheters. Still, these results should be interpreted with caution, since intermittent bladder flushing was performed disconnecting the collecting system, which may have represented a critical point for bacterial contamination. It is emphasized that urine cultures should be considered as follow up in cats with urethral obstruction, after urethral catheter removal.

RESUMO Os objetivos deste estudo foram pesquisar a presença de crescimento bacteriano e fúngico em amostras de urina de gatos com obstrução uretral, identificar os agentes infecciosos causadores e comparar parâmetros clínico-laboratoriais selecionados com os resultados da urocultura após a cateterização uretral. Vinte e oito gatos machos foram incluídos neste estudo prospectivo. A sondagem uretral foi realizada de forma asséptica, e o cateter foi mantido por 24-48 horas, com um sistema de coleta fechado e estéril. Não foram utilizados antibióticos durante esse período. A primeira amostra de urina foi obtida no momento da admissão do felino, e a segunda 24-48 horas após a retirada do cateter, ambas por cistocentese. Dois gatos (7,1%) apresentaram urocultura bacteriana positiva na primeira amostra de urina. A frequência de culturas de urina positivas na segunda amostra foi de 52,4% (11/21 gatos). Um terço das bactérias isoladas eram Gram-positivas, um terço eram Gram-negativas e um terço eram infecções mistas. As culturas fúngicas foram todas negativas. Houve associação significativa das uroculturas positivas com presença de piúria (P=0,0128). Observou-se alta frequência de uroculturas positivas após a retirada do cateter urinário, apesar de se respeitarem as diretrizes de cuidados com os cateteres uretrais. Ainda assim, esses resultados devem ser interpretados com cautela, pois a lavagem vesical intermitente foi realizada desconectando o sistema coletor, o que pode ter representado um ponto crítico para contaminação bacteriana. Ressalta-se que as uroculturas devem ser consideradas como acompanhamento em gatos com obstrução uretral, após a retirada do cateter uretral.

Abstract The extensive marine biodiversity has proved to be a promising source of substances with biomedical potential. In this study, the cytotoxicity of the Brazilian octocoral Phyllogorgia dilatata (Gorgoniidae) was evaluated against two tumor cell lines and three bacterial strains. The methanol/dichloromethane crude extract presented no antibacterial activity up to the highest concentration tested (512 µg/mL), however it revealed a noteworthy antiproliferative effect against HCT-116 (80%) and MCF-7 (54%) cell lines at 50 μg/mL. Therefore, guided by the cytotoxic activity, a multistep chemical fractionation of the extract provided the subfraction 5 (PDPH2-5) with IC50 values of 3.18 and 17.80 μg/mL against HCT-116 and MCF-7, respectively. The LC-HRMS/MS analysis of PDPH2-5 showed ions of m/z 219.1742 and 219.1743, characterized as (E,E) and (Z,E) germacrone, after a LC-DAD-SPE/NMR analysis of the hexanic fraction and comparisons of NMR data with the literature. Previously reported assessments to the cytotoxic activity of the (E,E)-diastereoisomer disclosed higher IC50 values than that obtained for the PDPH2-5 fraction, suggesting, herein, a potentiated effect of the diastereoisomeric mixture. Such remark encourage further bioactivity studies with stereoisomer mixtures and reduce the urge for compound isolation.

RESUMO O objetivo do presente estudo foi correlacionar os valores de reticulócitos pontilhados e agregados obtidos por metodologia manual com a metodologia automática de contagem de reticulócitos totais em amostras de sangue de gatos anêmicos, analisados em um contador hematológico com citometria de fluxo. Para isso, 40 amostras de sangue de pacientes felinos anêmicos, independentemente de idade e sexo, foram utilizadas para a determinação das contagens absolutas de reticulócitos totais pela metodologia automatizada por citometria de fluxo fluorescente e pela técnica manual com corante supravital, em duplicata. Na contagem manual, houve a discriminação entre reticulócitos pontilhados e agregados. Para a correlação entre os métodos, foi realizada a análise de regressão de Passing-Bablok. A média do hematócrito dos gatos foi de 15,25%, tendo a maioria dos gatos (32,5%) apresentado anemia moderada (hematócrito = 17,81%). Como resultados, a análise de regressão demonstrou que a correlação entre a contagem absoluta total automática foi superior à contagem manual de reticulócitos agregados (rho= 0,71; P<0,001) do que a contagem absoluta de reticulócitos pontilhados (rho= 0,68; P<0,001). Os resultados apresentados sugerem que a contagem de reticulócitos total absoluta realizada pelo analisador hematológico ProCyte Dx em gatos anêmicos se refere à contagem absoluta de reticulócitos. Dessa maneira, recomenda-se que os valores possam ser utilizados para a avaliação imediata da condição hematológica de gatos anêmicos.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to correlate the punctate and aggregated reticulocytes values obtained by manual methodology and the automatic reticulocyte count in 40 blood samples from anemic cats. Total reticulocyte absolute counts were determined by automated fluorescence flow cytometry and manual methods in 40 blood samples obtained from anemic cats. The manual count was obtained by supravital stain in duplicate to each sample and the reticulocyte morphology were discriminated between punctate and aggregates reticulocytes. Passing-Bablok regression analysis was utilized to compare the methods. Most samples were from anemic cat (15,25%) and the hematocrit mean was 17,81%. Regression analysis showed that the correlation between the absolute total automatic counts is higher with aggregated reticulocytes (rho= 0,71; P< 0,001) than with absolute punctate reticulocytes counts (rho= 0, 68, P< 0.001). Results suggest that the ProCyte Dx reticulocytes count in anemic cats is correlated with aggregate reticulocyte count. Thus, the greater amount of RNA and organelles in aggregate reticulocytes generates a cellular complexity and, therefore, greater impregnation of the dye in an automatic count. Thus, the values obtained by the hematologic instrument can be used for the immediate evaluation of the hematological condition in anemic cats.

ABSTRACT The morphology of the ruminal and omasal mucosa and hepatic parenchyma of 44 young bulls submitted to four types of concentrates were evaluated by varying the inclusion level of crude Glycerin - CG (0, 6, 12 and 18%). The variables evaluated were number of ruminal papillae per cm² of wall; area of the papillae and total absorption surface per cm² of wall; Mitotic index - MI, height and area of ruminal and omasal papillae; and hepatic morphology. The samples processed for inclusion in paraffin and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin. The different levels of inclusion of CG in the diet did not interfere either in the number of papillae per cm2 of rumen wall (P= 0,70) or in the ruminal absorptive surface area (P= 0,89). Animals that received diets with levels 12 and 18% had higher MI of the ruminal epithelium (P< 0.01), but higher cell proliferation wasn’t reflected in height gain and papillary area (P= 0,82). The omasal mucosa wasn’t influenced by the inclusion of CG (MI e height gain and papillary area, P= 0,43, P= 0,56 e P= 0,9, respectively). The inclusion of GB in up to 18% of diet dry matter didn’t alter the morphology of the rumen and omaso mucosa; and the integrity hepatic parenchyma.

This work evaluated different forms of processing of cassava peel for use in sheep feeding and its effects upon composition, meat quality, lipid profile and rumen morphometrics. A total of 20 weaned Santa Ines male sheeps, with initial weight 19.02±0.21 kg, were used. The factorial scheme utilized was a completely randomized design, with 4 treatments (A: supplement with dehydrated cassava peel ground, using a 12 mm sieve; B: supplement with dehydrated cassava peel ground using a 5 mm sieve; C: supplement with ensiled cassava peel; D: supplement with hydrolyzed cassava peel). Each animal was considered a replication, with 5 replications per treatment. The animals were reared in semiextensive system, on Brachiaria decumbens pasture. Treatments were supplied as supplement at proportion of 1.5 % of live weight (ratio roughage: concentrate of 62.5:37.5 %), amounts of food were adjusted, every week, according to the animals' weight. The experiment lasted 84 days, including 14 days for adaptation to the diets. Animals were slaughtered at 30.72±1.46 kg final weight; after slaughter and cooling (24 hours at ±2 ºC), samples of Longissimus lumborum muscle were collected to carry out the physicochemical analyses, and establish lipid profile. There were no significant differences for ashes, moisture and protein. The animals fed supplement with hydrolyzed cassava peel, presented higher values for ether extract. The fatty acid profile was not affected by processing type of cassava peels. The histological evaluation revealed alteration in the rumen epithelium and area of the omasal lamina, with higher values for coarsely ground cassava peel supplement. No influence of the supplements was found for physicochemical composition. The different supplements were not enough to alter the meat quality parameters, however, hydrolyzed cassava peel brought about increased accumulation of lipids in the muscle.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho, avaliar diferentes formas de processamento da casca de mandioca para uso na alimentação de ovinos e seus efeitos sobre a composição centesimal, qualidade de carne, perfil lipídico e morfometria ruminal. Para o experimento foram utilizados um total de 20 ovinos machos da raça Santa Inês desmamados com peso inicial 19,02±0,21 kg. O esquema fatorial utilizado foi um DIC (delineamento inteiramente casualizado), sendo 4 tratamentos (tratamento A: suplemento com casca de mandioca desidratada triturada em moinho com peneira de 12 mm; tratamento B: suplemento com casca de mandioca desidratada triturada em moinho com peneira de 5 mm; tratamento C: suplemento com casca de mandioca ensilada; tratamento D: suplemento com casca de mandioca hidrolisada), cada animal foi considerado uma repetição, totalizando 5 repetições por tratamento. Os animais foram criados em sistema semiextensivo, em pastagem de Brachiaria decumbens e o fornecimento dos tratamentos na forma de suplemento na proporção de 1,5 % do peso vivo (relação volumoso:concen-trado de 62,5:37,5 %), sendo a quantidade corrigida semanalmente em função do peso dos animais. O experimento teve duração de 84 dias, incluindo o período de 14 dias de adaptação às dietas e os animais foram abatidos com peso final de 30,72±1,46 kg, sendo coletado após abate e resfriamiento (24 horas a ±2 ºC), amostras do músculo Longissimus lumborum para realizacao das análises físico-químicas e do perfil lipídico. Os resultados mostraram que não houve diferenca significativa para as cinzas, umidade e proteína. Os animais que receberam suplemento com casca de mandioca hidrolisada apresentaram maiores valores de extrato etéreo. Não foi verificado modificacao do perfil de ácidos graxos em virtude do processamento da casca de mandioca. A avaliacao histológica revelou alteracao no epitélio do rúmen e área da lamina do omaso, com maiores valores no suplemento com uso da casca de mandioca moída grosseiramente. Para as variáveis da composicao físico-químicas não foram verificadas influéncia dos suplementos. Os diferentes suplementos não foram suficientes para alterar os parametros de qualidade de carne, entretanto, a casca de mandioca hidrolisada ocasionou maior acúmulo de lipídeos no músculo.

Avaliou-se o desenvolvimento do trato digestivo de bezerros Holandeses aleitados com silagem de leite de transição. Foram utilizados 18 animais, com peso corporal inicial médio de 36,50kg (±4,03), alimentados individualmente em baias com concentrado, feno de Cynodon sp., água e suplemento mineral oferecidos ad libitum. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso, com três tratamentos e seis repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram em leite integral e silagem de leite de transição diluída em água ou misturada em leite, correspondendo a quatro litros diários divididos em duas refeições, durante 59 dias. Aos 60 dias, os bezerros foram abatidos e realizaram-se pesagens do trato digestivo e medidas histológicas das papilas ruminais. O sistema de aleitamento não interferiu nos consumos de concentrado e matéria seca total e no desenvolvimento de papilas ruminais (P>0,05). A silagem de leite de transição diluída em água resultou em menor peso corporal, menor peso corporal vazio e absoluto do abomaso e maior desenvolvimento intestinal. O aleitamento com silagem misturada em leite não comprometeu o desenvolvimento corporal e do trato digestivo até 60 dias de idade, representando alternativa ao aleitamento com leite.

This study aimed to evaluate the development of the digestive tract of Holstein calves which suckled milk from silage transition. We used 18 animals, with an average initial body weight of 36.50kg (±4.03), individually housed in pens with concentrate, hay Cynodon sp., water and mineral supplement offered ad libitum. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments and six replications. Treatments consisted of whole milk and silage transitional milk, diluted with water or mixed with milk, corresponding to four liters per day divided over two meals during 59 days. The food intake was monitored daily and weighed every week after the supply of liquid diet in the morning. At 60 days, the calves were slaughtered and the digestive tract was weighed and histological measures of rumen papillae were taken. The nursing system did not affect the consumption of concentrate and total dry matter and the development of rumen papillae (P>0.05). The silage transition milk diluted in water resulted in lower final body weight, lower body weight and absolute emptiness abomasum and intestinal further development. Milk transition silage mixed in milk did not affect the development of the digestive tract and body until 60 days of age, representing an alternative to milk.

Este estudo avaliou a dinâmica reprodutiva e a morfologia gonadal de piaparas (Leporinus obtusidens) capturados a jusante de uma usina hidrelétrica. Os 107 exemplares avaliados foram capturados mensalmente, de setembro de 2006 a agosto de 2007. Os dados foram estratificados entre as estações do ano para se avaliar a maturação gonadal, e o período reprodutivo foi determinado por meio da avaliação do índice gonadossomático, índice hepatossomático, índice de gordura abdominal (AFI), relação peso:comprimento, fator de condição e proporção sexual. O período reprodutivo foi observado do inverno para o verão, julho-março, para as fêmeas, e da primavera para o outono, setembro-junho, para os machos. AFI foi alto durante e após o período reprodutivo em fêmeas e apenas durante o período reprodutivo em machos. Os maiores valores para machos e fêmeas foram obtidos na primavera e no verão. As fêmeas observadas não desovaram e mostraram atresia folicular. Essas características sugerem que L. obtusidens não usa a área de estudo como sítio reprodutivo e, provavelmente, realiza migração.

This study evaluated the reproductive dynamics and gonadal morphology of piaparas (Leporinus obtusidens) captured downstream from the Funil Hydroelectric Power Station. The 107 piaparas evaluated were captured monthly from Sep 2006 to Aug 2007. The data were stratified among the seasons to evaluate gonad maturation and the reproductive period was determined by assessing the gonadosomatic index, hepatosomatic index, abdominal fat index (AFI), weight:length ratio, condition factor and sexual proportion. The reproductive period lasted from winter to summer (Jul-Mar) in females and from spring to autumn (Sept-Jun) in males. AFI was high during and after the reproductive period in females and only during the reproductive period in males. The highest HIS values for males and females were obtained in spring and summer (Sept-Mar). The females observed did not spawn and showed follicular atresia. These characteristics suggest that L. obtusidens does not use the study area as a reproductive site and probably migrates for this purpose.

Embora existam linhagens de Escherichia coli não patogênicas para aves, muitas outras possuem a capacidade de causar sérios danos à saúde das mesmas, sendo capazes de ocasionar diferentes tipos de processos infecciosos. As linhagens patogênicas são denominadas Avian Pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), possuindo genes relacionados ao processo de patogênese em epissomos (plasmídios) ou no cromossomo. A presença de plasmídios, contendo genes de resistência a antibióticos em linhagens aviárias, patogênicas ou não, indicam a possibilidade de transferência gênica lateral entre diferentes tipos de linhagens facilitando também a transferência de genes de patogenicidade ou virulência. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o perfil de sensibilidade a antibióticos (13) de diferentes amostras (35) de E. coli isoladas de aves comerciais do Estado de Pernambuco apresentando, ou não, sinais clínicos de processos infecciosos e correlacionar esta resistência com a presença de plasmídios. Os testes utilizados demonstraram que 94,28% dos isolados foram resistentes a três ou mais antibióticos, com a lincomicina apresentando o maior percentual de resistência (100%). Na Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM) observou-se multirresistência a vários antimicrobianos. A presença de plasmídios foi detecada em 80,0% (28/35) dos isolados, com 16 isolados apresentando plasmídios com peso molecular aproximado de 88 MDa. Também foi verificada a presença de linhagens apresentando plasmídios de vários tamanhos. Concluiu-se que isolados de E. coli resistentes a antimicrobianos utilizados na avicultura estão presentes no Estado de Pernambuco, tanto em frangos de corte quanto em poedeiras comerciais. A presença de plasmídios detectados na maioria dos isolados pode estar associada à resistência aos antimicrobianos e sugere a presença de possíveis genes relacionados à patogenicidade. Monitorar a resistência a antibióticos em bactérias isoladas de animais torna-se um fator determinante para eleição e êxito do tratamento, bem como a possibilidade de eliminação daquelas que possuem plasmídios para se evitar a transferência de genes relacionados à patogenicidade.

Although exist poultry non-pathogenic Escherichia coli strains, many others have capacity to impose serious damages to this birds, being able to cause different infectious diseases. Pathogenic strains are termed Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) strains. APEC strains harbor chromossomal and plasmid pathogenicity-related genes. The presence of resistance plasmids in avian E. coli strains could facilitate horizontal tranfer of virulence gene between pathogenic and non pathogenic strains. The aim of this paper was to determine the resistance level to 13 different antibacterial drugs of avian E. coli strains (35) isolated from commercial poultry of Pernambuco State, Brazil, and to correlate the detected resistance level to the presence of plasmids. The results show that 94.28% of strains were resistant to at least three different antibacterial drugs with the highest percentage to lincomycin. The Minimal Inibitory Concentration (MIC) showed that multi- resistance to various antibacterial drugs was present in these strains. Plasmids of several sizes, including plasmids of approximately 88Mda were detected in most of the studied strains. The results herein obtained suggest that the high resistance level observed could be due to the presence of plasmids, what could facilitate the transfer of pathogenicity related genes among pathogenic and non pathogenic strains; it is necessary to take a constant survey on the resistance level to antimicrobial drugs of avian E. coli strains to reach a better control of APEC strains and avoid transfer of pathogenicity related genes between strains.

Anxiolytic and anxiogenic-like behavioral outcomes have been reported for methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or ecstasy) in rodents. In the present experiment, we attempted to identify behavioral, hormonal and neurochemical outcomes of MDMA treatment to clarify its effects on anxiety-related responses in 2-month-old Balb/c male mice (25-35 g; N = 7-10 mice/group). The behavioral tests used were open field, elevated plus maze, hole board, and defensive behavior against predator odor. Moreover, we also determined striatal dopamine and dopamine turnover, and serum corticosterone levels. MDMA was injected ip at 0.2, 1.0, 5.0, 8.0, 10, or 20 mg/kg. MDMA at 10 mg/kg induced the following significant (P < 0.05) effects: a) a dose-dependent increase in the distance traveled and in the time spent moving in the open field; b) decreased exploratory activity in the hole board as measured by number of head dips and time spent in head dipping; c) increased number of open arm entries and increased time spent in open arm exploration in the elevated plus maze; d) increased time spent away from an aversive stimulus and decreased number of risk assessments in an aversive odor chamber; e) increased serum corticosterone levels, and f) increased striatal dopamine level and turnover. Taken together, these data suggest an anxiogenic-like effect of acute MDMA treatment, despite the fact that behavioral anxiety expression was impaired in some of the behavioral tests used as a consequence of the motor stimulating effects of MDMA.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is rare in the pediatric population, accounting for 2-3% of childhood leukemia cases, with an annual incidence of one case per million children. The low toxicity profile of imatinib mesylate has led to its approval as a front-line therapy in children for whom interferon treatment has failed or who have relapsed after allogeneic transplantation. We describe the positive responses of 2 children (case 1 - from a 7-year-old male since May 2005; case 2 - from a 5-year-old female since June 2006) with Philadelphia-positive chromosome CML treated with imatinib (300 mg/day, orally) for up to 28 months, as evaluated by morphological, cytogenetic, and molecular approaches. Our patients are alive, are in the chronic phase, and are in continuous morphological complete remission.

Several motile processes are responsible for the movement of proteins into and within the flagellar membrane, but little is known about the process by which specific proteins (either actin-associated or not) are targeted to protozoan flagellar membranes. Actin is a major cytoskeleton protein, while polymerization and depolymerization of parasite actin and actin-interacting proteins (AIPs) during both processes of motility and host cell entry might be key events for successful infection. For a better understanding the eukaryotic flagellar dynamics, we have surveyed genomes, transcriptomes and proteomes of pathogenic Leishmania spp. to identify pertinent genes/proteins and to build in silico models to properly address their putative roles in trypanosomatid virulence. In a search for AIPs involved in flagellar activities, we applied computational biology and proteomic tools to infer from the biological meaning of coronins and Arp2/3, two important elements in phagosome formation after parasite phagocytosis by macrophages. Results presented here provide the first report of Leishmania coronin and Arp2/3 as flagellar proteins that also might be involved in phagosome formation through actin polymerization within the flagellar environment. This is an issue worthy of further in vitro examination that remains now as a direct, positive bioinformatics-derived inference to be presented.

Dezessete bezerros foram utilizados para avaliar o efeito de ácidos graxos voláteis (AGV) sobre a morfologia ruminal, a epiderme do plano nasolabial, a epicera e o perioplum, e para validar a execução de biópsias tegumentares como indicadores de alterações da mucosa ruminal. Os animais receberam infusões intra-ruminal de butirato, propionato, lactato ou salina (controle) durante 37 dias. A insulina sorológica foi dosada no 22º dia experimental nos tempos de 0, 90, 180 e 360 minutos em relação à infusão diária da manhã. No 89º dia de vida, após o abate, foram coletados fragmentos ruminais e epidérmicos. Todos os AGV induziram aumento proporcionalmente maior no peso do ruminorretículo que no peso do omaso, sendo o butirato aparentemente mais estimulador da massa do estômago aglandular. Embora o butirato tenha sido mais estimulador da secreção de insulina, os AGV foram incapazes de induzir ganho nas dimensões papilares. Os AGV aumentaram a proliferação celular nos epitélios do rúmen e do perioplum traseiro, contrariamente ao efeito sobre o plano nasolabial e a epicera. Os efeitos dos AGV sobre a morfologia da mucosa ruminal e de outros tecidos queratinizados sugerem que danos morfológicos no rúmen e cascos podem ter causa comum. Biópsias tegumentares podem ter utilidade como indicadores de alterações morfológicas da mucosa ruminal.

The effect of butyrate, propionate, and lactate on ruminal wall, epidermis of nasolabial surface, perioplum, and epicera of 17 neonatal calves was evaluated. The experiment also aimed to validate the procedure and interpretation of tegument biopsies as indicators of ruminal mucosa alterations. Serum insulin was sampled on the 22nd day from the beginning of treatments, at 0, 90, 180, and 360 minutes after the morning infusion. After slaughtering, samples were collected from ruminal wall, nasolabial surface, epicera, and perioplum from face and hindquarters. All volatile fatty acids (VFA) induced greater increase in ruminal-reticulum proportionate weight than in omasum. Butyrate was a greater stimulator of non-glandular stomach growth. Although butyrate stimulated more insulin secretion, this VFA was not capable to induced gain on papillae area or height. The effect of nasolabial surface VFA infusion was the opposite to that observed in the rumen. VFA increased hind perioplum mitotic index, contrary to its effect on the nasolabial surface and epicera. VFA effects on ruminal mucosa morphology and on other keratinized tissues suggest that morphological damage on hoof and ruminal epithelium may have a common cause. Tegumentary biopsies may be useful as indicators of morphological alterations of ruminal mucosa.

Avaliou-se o efeito de ácidos graxos voláteis (AGV) sobre a integridade do epitélio no rúmen, no plano nasolabial, na epicera e no perioplum traseiro e dianteiro de bezerros e validou-se a feitura de biópsias tegumentares como indicadores de alterações morfológicas da mucosa ruminal. Dezessete bezerros, com sonda no rúmen, receberam infusões intra-ruminais de AGV ou salina, durante 37 dias. Aos 89 dias de vida, após o abate, foram colhidas amostras dos tecidos. Os AGV aumentaram a área de epitélio total e a área de células metabolicamente ativas no epitélio ruminal, embora o butirato não tenha induzido ao desenvolvimento papilar. A área de epitélio não queratinizado no plano nasolabial foi reduzida pela infusão de AGV. Butirato e lactato foram mais indutores de alterações patológicas no epitélio ruminal. Não foram observadas lesões histológicas nos epitélios do plano nasolabial, da epicera e do perioplum, mostrando que essas são conseqüências do efeito direto dos AGV sobre o epitélio ruminal. Os efeitos indireto e direto dos AGV sobre a morfologia dos tecidos epiteliais queratinizados não foram iguais. Biópsias tegumentares podem ter utilidade como indicadores de alterações morfológicas da mucosa ruminal.

The effect of volatile fatty acids (VFA) on rumen wall, epidermis of nasolabial surface, perioplum, and epicera of calves was evaluated. The experiment also aimed to validate the procedure of tegument biopsies as indicators of ruminal mucosa alterations. Seventeen neonatal calves with foley catheters received intraruminal infusions of VFA or saline, during 37 days. At 89-day-old, the animals were slaughtered and tissue samples were collected from rumen, nasolabial surface, epicera, and perioplum from face and hindquarters. VFA infusion increased total epithelium area and metabolically active ruminal cell area; although butirate did not induce the papilar development. The effect of nasolabial surface VFA infusion was the opposite to that observed in the rumen. No histological lesion was observed on nasolabial surface, epicera, and perioplum, demonstrating that these are consequences of VFA direct effect on ruminal epithelium. Butyrate and lactate induced more alterations on the ruminal epithelium. Indirect and direct VFA effects on keratinized epithelium tissues morphology were not identical. Tegumentary biopsies may be useful as indicators of morphological alterations of ruminal mucosa.

O presente estudo foi conduzido para avaliar a influência da inclusão do resíduo do processamento de abacaxi (Ananas comosus L.) nas dietas sobre os consumos (por unidade de tamanho metabólico - UTM) e coeficientes de digestibilidade da matéria seca (MS), matéria orgânica (MO), proteína bruta (PB), extrato etéreo (EE), fibra detergente neutro (FDN), fibra detergente ácido (FDA), hemiceluloses (HCEL), celulose (CEL) e energia de dietas experimentais isofibrosas e isoprotéicas. Avaliaram-se também os balanços nitrogenados e de energia dos animais. Vinte ovinos machos, inteiros receberam rações com quatro níveis de inclusão do resíduo (0; 11%; 16%; 27%) em base de matéria seca, em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com cinco repetições por tratamento. Maiores consumos de matéria seca foram evidenciados quando as rações continham 11% do resíduo. Maiores consumos de proteína bruta, fibra detergente neutro, fibra detergente ácido e celulose (g/UTM) e energia metabolizável (kcal/UTM) foram apresentados por animais alimentados com dietas contendo 11% de resíduo em relação ao das dietas com 27% de inclusão (P<0,05). Maior coeficiente de digestibilidade da FDA ocorreu para dietas que não continham o resíduo de abacaxi. Os coeficientes de digestibilidade da CEL foram semelhantes. Os balanços energéticos e protéicos foram positivos. Melhores resultados para os parâmetros analisados foram observados para dietas que incluíam até 16% do resíduo de abacaxi na base da matéria seca.

The influence of increasing levels of pineapple by-product (Ananas comosus L.) on intake (unit metabolic size - UMS) and apparent digestibility (%) of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), hemicelluloses (HCEL) and cellulose (CEL) and energy of isofibrous and isoproteic experimental diets of sheep were evaluated. Energetic and nitrogenous balance were also measured. Twenty rams were randomly allotted to four treatments in a completely randomized design with five replications. The treatments were formulated to contain zero; 11, 16 and 27% of pineapple by-product on DM basis. Higher dry matter intake was observed on 11% pineapple by-product diet. CP, NDF, ADF, CEL intake (g/UMS) and metabolizable energy intake (kcal/UMS) of 11% pineapple by-product diet were higher than 27% pineapple by-product diet (P<0.05). ADF digestibility was higher for 0% pineapple by-product diet. Energy and nitrogenous balances were positives. Diets formulated to contain up to 16% of pineapple by-product presented the best results.

Foram determinados os índices de infestação por moscas-das-frutas em seis cultivares de Coffea arabica L. nos sistemas com e sem arborização, sob manejo orgânico. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com parcelas sub-subdivididas e quatro repetições. Uma amostra de 250 g de frutos maduros por parcela foi colhida em maio de 2005. As cultivares ‘Icatu Amarelo’ e ‘Catucaí Amarelo’ mostraram menor susceptibilidade aos tefritídeos, nos dois sistemas de cultivo. Quanto aos lonqueídeos, ‘Oeiras’, ‘Catucaí Amarelo’ e ‘Catuaí Vermelho’ foram as cultivares menos susceptíveis no sistema arborizado, não havendo diferença entre as cultivares no sistema sem arborização. Dos frutos foram obtidas as seguintes espécies de Tephritidae: Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) e A. sororcula Zucchi (Tephritidae). Os lonqueídeos foram representados por: Neosilba bifida Strikis & Prado, N. certa (Walker), N. glaberrima (Wiedemann), N. pendula (Bezzi), N. pseudopendula (Korytkowski & Ojeda), Dasiops rugifrons Hennig, Neosilba n.sp.10 e Neosilba n.sp.14.

The infestation indices by fruit flies were determined for six cultivars of Coffea arabica L. in shaded and unshaded systems under organic management. The experiment was set in a completely randomized design with a split-split-plot arrangement and four replicates. A 250g-sample of maturing fruits per plot was harvested in May 2005. The cultivars ‘Icatu Amarelo’ and ‘Catucaí Amarelo’ were the least susceptible to attack by tephritids in both systems. As for lonchaeids, ‘Oeiras’, ‘Catucaí Amarelo’ and ‘Catuaí Vermelho’ were the least susceptible cultivars in the shaded system, and there was no difference among the cultivars in the unshaded system. The following tephritid species were obtained: Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) and A. sororcula Zucchi (Tephritidae). Lonchaeids were represented by Neosilba bifida Strikis & Prado, N. certa (Walker), N. glaberrima (Wiedemann), N. pendula (Bezzi), N. pseudopendula (Korytkowski and Ojeda), Dasiops rugifrons Hennig, Neosilba n.sp.10 and Neosilba n.sp.14.
