In this work we study the deformation of a thin filament immersed in different fluids when subjected to a compressive force. The filament shape is analyzed for different magnitudes of the applied compression and for different rheological properties of the medium: purely viscous, purely elastic and displaying viscoelastic behavior. En este trabajo se estudia la deformación por compresión de un filamento delgado inmerso en un fluido. Se estudia la forma del filamento variando la magnitud de la compresión aplicada y las propiedades reológicas del medio: puramente viscoso, puramente elástico y con comportamiento viscoelástico. Se observan transiciones entre regímenes de diferente estabilidad.

ABSTRACT This paper addresses the problem of fault detection in stator winding of induction machine by a multiple change points detection approach in time series. To handle this problem a new fuzzy/Bayesian approach is proposed which differs from previous approaches since it does not require prior information as: the number of change points or the characterization of the data probabilistic distribution. The approach has been applied in the monitoring the current of the stator winding induction machine. The good results obtained by proposed methodology illustrate its efficiency.

O Mycoplasma é considerado cosmopolita, podendo ser disseminado através do comércio internacional de animais, sêmen industrializado e de produtos de transferência de embriões. A expansão de células do cumulus é utilizada como parâmetro de avaliação de oócitos bovinos cultivados in vitro e suas alterações morfológicas são representativas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a interação do Mycoplasma bovigenitalium, exposto experimentalmente à cultura primária de célula do cumulus, após o período de maturação. Complexos oócitos cumulus (COCs) obtidos através de punção folicular de ovários bovinos, provenientes de abatedouro, foram divididos em dois grupos para serem maturados durante 24h em meio de maturação (TCM199 + hormônios) em estufa a 38º C, 5% de CO2, 95% de umidade. Posteriormente, os oócitos foram retirados das placas, permanecendo somente com as células do cumulus aderidas. Com o monoestrato celular formado, um grupo foi infectado com 30 mL de M. bovigenitalium, replicado em meio Hayflick modificado a 37º C em estufa de microaerofilia, enquanto o outro foi mantido como controle. Os resultados mostraram que, com 24h de exposição ao patógeno, as culturas apresentaram um pequeno número de células arredondadas e granulosas, quando comparadas as dos controles. Esse efeito persistiu até o sétimo dia, onde se iniciou um processo de descolamento das células. Pode-se concluir que uma contaminação por micoplasma pode ser imperceptível às manipulações da FIV, pois células infectadas por esse grupo de bactérias não apresentam turvações no meio de cultura e, quando não lisam a célula hospedeira, tornam mais suscetível ao ambiente e outros agentes infecciosos.

The Mycoplasma is considered cosmopolitan and can be disseminated through international trade of animals, industrialized semen and embryo transfer products. The expansion of cumulus cells is used as a parameter for evaluating cattle oocytes cultivated in vitro, and their morphological changes are representative. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the interaction of Mycoplasma bovigenitalium with primary-culture cumulus cells, after the in vitro maturation period. Cumulus complex oocytes (COCs) obtained through follicular puncture of ovaries from a cattle slaughterhouse were divided into two groups to be matured for 24 hours in the maturation medium (TCM 199 + hormones) in a climate controlled chamber at 38º C, 5% CO2, and 95% humidity. Subsequently, the oocytes were removed from the plates, which remained with only the cumulus cells attached. With the monostratum cell formed, one group was infected with 30 ºL (5 x 10(6) cells/mL) M. bovigenitalium, replicated in modified Hayflick medium at 37º C in a mycroaerofilic chamber, while the other was kept as a control. The results showed that with 24 hours of exposure to the pathogen, the cultures showed a small number of rounded and grainy cells, when compared to the controls. This effect persisted until the 7th day, when a process of cell detachment began. It can be concluded that a mycoplasma contamination may be imperceptible to the manipulations of FIV, because cells infected by this group of bacteria present no cloudiness in the culture field, and when they do not lyse the host cell, they make it more susceptible to environment and other infectious agents.

Avaliou-se a eficácia dos tratamentos, definidos pela International Embryo Transfer Society (IETS), de oócitos bovinos, maturados in vitro e expostos experimentalmente à Leptospira interrogans sorovar Grippotyphosa. Os oócitos foram obtidos por meio de punção folicular, selecionados e distribuídos em quatro grupos, expostos ao patógeno e submetidos aos diferentes tipos de tratamentos. Foram expostos à cepa na concentração de 4,7.10(5)/µL, virulenta e não adaptada ao meio de manutenção EMJH, e, de 6,3.10(5)/µL, avirulenta e adaptada ao meio, por 24 horas. Os grupos tratados com tripsina ou antibióticos apresentaram eficácia de 21,7%, e o grupo lavado sequencialmente 33,4%. Os tratamentos não foram eficazes para os contaminados com a cepa avirulenta. Concluiu-se que as normas de controle de qualidade estabelecidas pela IETS poderiam ser revisadas e, possivelmente, redefinidas, uma vez que a eficácia dos tratamentos, provavelmente, não depende somente da espécie do patógeno, pois há interferência da virulência e de ação dos tratamentos sobre o tipo de patógeno.

The research purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments established by the IETS, in bovine oocytes maturated in vitro, exposed experimentally to Leptospira interrogans serovar Grippotyphosa. The oocytes were obtained through follicular puncture, selected and randomly allotted in four groups, exposed to the pathogen and subjected to different types of treatments. They were exposed to the strain in the concentration of 4.7x10(5)/µL virulent and not adapted to the EMJH, and to 6,3x10(5)/µL, virulent and adapted to the medium, for 24 hours. The treatments presented for the groups with trypsin or antibiotics, 21.7% efficiency, and the group washed sequentially presented 33.4% efficiency. The treatments were not effective for those infected with avirulent strain. In the statistical analysis, by χ², was found significance in the results obtained. The standards of quality control established by IETS could be reviewed and possibly redefined, since the effectiveness of treatment probably depends not only on the species of the pathogen, but is also affected by its virulence and treatment effectiveness.

The association between vascular malformations and cerebral gliomas is unusual. While the association between cavernous angioma with gliomatous lesions is even more rare, it is considered by certain authors to be a particular pathological entity termed angioglioma. The authors report on two cases of association of a cavernous angioma with a ganglioglioma and an oligodendroglioma respectively. Subsequent review of the literature on the so-called angiogliomas was conducted. In the author's opinion, the entity of angiogliomas represents a general spectrum of angiomatous neoplasms that include gliomatous tumors, in the majority low-grade gliomas, associated with a major vascular component.

La asociación entre las malformaciones vasculares y los gliomas cerebrales es inusual. Mientras que la asociación entre angioma cavernoso con lesiones gliomatosas es aún más rara, es por esto considerado por algunos autores como una entidad patológica particular llamada angioglioma. Los autores reportan dos casos de asociación de un angioma cavernoso con una ganglioglioma y un oligodendroglioma, respectivamente. Además se realizó una revisión de la literatura sobre los llamados angiogliomas. En opinión de los autores, la entidad de los angiogliomas se presenta dentro de un espectro general de neoplasias angiomatosas, que incluyen tumores cerebrales, en su mayoría gliomas de bajo grado, asociados a su vez, con un componente vascular importante.

This paper addresses the change point detection problem in time series. A methodology based on the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm applied to time series modeled as a process with Beta distribution is discussed. In order to make this methodology useful in practice, a fuzzy cluster technique is applied to the initial time series at first, generating a new data set with Beta distribution. Bayesian procedures are considered for inference and the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm is used to sample from the posteriors. In the clustering process, a Kohonen neural network is used having as objective to find the best centers of the time series to be used in the fuzzyfication process. Finally, it will be presented a simulation results in the series of the electric energy consumption in Brazil, between January of 1976 and December of 2000, five months before the blackout occurred in 2001. Such result illustrates the efficiency of the proposed methodology for change point detection in time series.

Although the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is increasingly being applied in the Northern Patagonia Region, different pesticides are still used in order to properly control agricultural pests. Other agrochemicals are also applied in the agriculture associated activities like conservation and packaging industries. The potential impact caused by these pesticides on aquatic organisms is assessed in the present study by means of acute toxicity data available in the literature and local analytical results. A tiered procedure was used allowing the selection of those environmental xenobiotics that need further ecotoxicity studies. The observed maximum residues of azinphos-methyl, (S-(3,4-dihydro-4-oxobenzo[d]-[1,2,3]-triazin-3-ylmethyl)O,O-dimethyl phosphordithioate), indicate the probability of acute effects in 37 % of the studied species in the river, mainly fish and zooplankton. This value increased in drainage channels samples up to 42 %. Additionally, carbaryl (1-napthylmethylcarbamate) residues found in drainage channels affect 14 % of the studied species, while in the river samples the impact was negligible.

Aunque el manejo integrado de plagas se aplica en forma creciente en la Región Norpatagónica, todavía una amplia gama de plaguicidas es utilizada con el fin de controlar apropiadamente las principales plagas agrícolas. Otros agroquímicos también son aplicados en las actividades industriales asociadas. El objetivo del presente trabajo es evaluar el impacto potencial causado por estos plaguicidas sobre los organismos acuáticos y para ello se utilizan datos bibliográficos de toxicidad aguda y resultados analíticos locales. Se utilizó un procedimiento escalonado, permitiendo la selección de aquellos xenobióticos ambientales que justificarían un estudio de ecotoxicidad posterior. Los residuos máximos de metil azinfos (S-(3,4-dihydro-4-oxobenzo[d]-[1,2,3]- triazin-3-ylmethyl)O,O-dimethyl phosphordithioate), indican la probabilidad de efectos agudos en el 37% de las especies estudiadas en el río, principalmente peces y zooplancton. Este valor se incrementa en los drenajes hasta un 42%. En el caso del carbaril (1-napthylmethylcarbamate) los residuos encontrados en drenajes afectarían al 14% de las especies estudiadas, mientras que en el río el impacto es despreciable.

O exercício físico prolongado reduz os estoques de glicogênio muscular. Nessas condições, os processos de fadiga muscular são estimulados coincidindo com um aumento na produção de espécies reativas de oxigênio. A suplementação de carboidratos ou de antioxidantes isoladamente contribui para a melhora da performance muscular, sugerindo um efeito importante da depleção de substrato (glicose) e do aumento da produção de EROs no desenvolvimento da fadiga muscular durante a atividade física. Embora o mecanismo seja desconhecido, estamos propondo neste estudo que uma maior disponibilidade de glicogênio poderia favorecer uma maior atividade da via das pentoses fosfato, aumentando a disponibilidade de NADPH e GSH no tecido muscular esquelético. Uma maior capacidade antioxidante aumentaria a capacidade do tecido muscular em atividade, mantendo o equilíbrio redox durante atividade física prolongada e melhorando o desempenho. Neste processo, o ciclo glicose-ácido graxo pode ser importante aumentando a oxidação de lipídio e reduzindo o consumo de glicogênio durante a atividade prolongada. Além disso, um aumento na produção de EROs pode reduzir a atividade de enzimas importantes do metabolismo celular incluindo a aconitase e a a-cetoglutarato desidrogenase, comprometendo a produção de energia oxidativa, via predominante na produção de ATP durante a atividade muscular prolongada.

Fatigue is closely related to the depletion of glycogen in the skeletal muscle during prolonged exercise. Under this condition, the production of oxygen reactive species (ROS) is substantially increased. It has been shown that dietary supplementation of carbohydrate or antioxidant attenuates muscle fatigue during contraction. This suggests that glycogen availability and/or elevated ROS production plays an important role on muscle fatigue development during prolonged muscle activity. Although the mechanism is still unknown, we propose that elevated muscle glycogen availability may lead to a high activity of hexose monophosphate pathway, increasing the NADPH and glutathione concentration in the skeletal muscle tissue. Elevated antioxidant capacity would increase the muscle redox balance during muscle contraction, improving performance. In this process, the glucose-fatty acid cycle may be important to increase lipid oxidation and consequently decrease glycogen utilization during prolonged activity. In addition, an elevated ROS production could reduce the activity of key metabolic enzymes including aconitase and a-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, decreasing the oxidative energy production in the skeletal muscle during prolonged activity.
