Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth curve of selectively bred and non-selectively bred tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum). The experiment involved 388 fish (weight: 65.38 ± 20.00 g; age: 217 days), consisting of 252 fish from seven selectively bred families (18 fish per family) and 18 non-selectively bred fish (control group). Groups were placed in two 800-m² tanks. Biometric measurements were taken on nine occasions at 30-day intervals, for a period of 254 days. Weight and morphometric traits were evaluated. To describe the tambaqui growth behavior, we adopted the Gompertz nonlinear regression model. Greater growth (p < 0.05) was observed in selectively bred families compared with control group. Four families stood out with higher (p < 0.05) asymptotic values for weight (F1: 2448.7 g; F7: 2284.7 g; F5 2180.1 g; F4: 2080.5 g; and control: 1808.4 g) and other morphometric traits. None of the selectively bred families (except F5) had a higher growth rate and age at inflection point than the fish from control group. In conclusion, selectively bred and non-selectively bred fish present distinct growth curves, but some families have greatly superior growth.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

ABSTRACT In the industrial and commercial sectors of the Araripe Region in Pernambuco, Brazil, fire wood is the used in processes of dehydration and production of gypsum with different technologies. Thus, this study aimed to find alternatives to supply the demand of firewood in the Gypsun Pole of Araripe in Pernambuco through the implementation of forest with native and exotic species. The experiment was installed at the Experimental Station of the Agronomic Institute of Pernambuco (IPA), using nine species, both native and exotic: (Imburana - Amburana cearense (Allemão) A.C. Sm.; Angico - Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan var. cebil (Griseb.) Altschul; Jurema - Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir.; Sabiá - Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia Benth.; Acácia - Senna siamea (Lam.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby; Leucena - Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) R. de Wit.; Algaroba - Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) D.C.; Ipês - Tabebuia sp.1 e Tabebuia sp.2). The design was completely randomized with different numbers of replications. The following parameters were evaluated: volume in cubic meter (m³) and stereo meters (st) and survival. With regard to the volume in cubic meter, Sabia had the best production. The Jurema and the Sabiá were the heaviest species. In relation to survival, the Ipê 2 and the Imburana had the highest mortalities. Thus, the Sabiá and the Jurema are the species indicated for the production of wood in homogeneous commercial plantations in the Chapada Araripe in Pernambuco.

In this paper, the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was applied to predict the dynamic-mechanical properties of carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy composite. The Standard Test Method for Measuring Vibration-Damping Properties of Materials (ASTM E-756) was used for a cantilever beam that gives experimental curves of magnitude versus time. The composite is used in aeronautics and its configuration is [0º/45º/90º/0º]S. A multilayered neural network perceptron (MLP) was used, and the results showed that the application of the Levenberg-Marquardt learning algorithm leads to a high predictive quality to epoxy composites, i.e. nearly 64% of standard error of prediction was found to be >0.9. The initial tests considered a simple architecture 2-[30-30]2-1 resulting in low predictive quality. However, increasing the number of neurons in the hidden layers resulted in an enhancement in an optimized architecture composed by 2-[100-100]2-1 neurons.

ABSTRACT The degree of radiosensitivity depends mostly on the species, the stage of the embryo at irradiation, the doses employed and the criteria used to measure the effect. One of the most common criteria to evaluate radiosensitivity in seeds is to measure the average plant height at a determined time after germination. The radiation dose value that causes a 50% growth reduction of a population is called GR50. The goal of this research was to study soybean radiosensitivity from a quantitative point of view. Soybena seeds from Instituto Agronômico, Campinas, SP, were irradiated in a 60Co gamma source type 220 excell from MDS Nordion with dose rate of 1.48 kGy / h in CENA. Applied doses in kGy unit was follows: 0.0, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.50. It was concluded that the GR50 of soybeans is 0.30 ± 0.04 kGy. It was not possible to determine the LD50 for the dose range employed in this experiment.

The frequency of arthropathy was evaluated in 251 patients with clinical and serological diagnosis (specific IgM detection by enzyme immunoassay) of exanthematic disease. Arthropathy (arthralgia and/or arthritis) was more frequent in dengue fever (49%) and rubella (38.2%) cases than in human parvovirus (30%) and measles (28.1%) cases. Except for measles cases, joint complaints prevailed in adults (315 years of age) and this difference was significant. The higher frequency of arthropathy in adults was more evident in human parvovirus (75%), rubella (65%) and dengue fever (57.7%) cases than in measles cases (31%). Arthropathy was also more frequent in females for all rash diseases studied. The results of this study showed the high occurrence of joint complaints in the diseases described here and the importance of laboratory confirmation for their differential diagnosis.

The fumigation-extraction method was used for measuring soil microbial biomass of C (BM-C) and N (BM-N) in a red-yellow latosol under different forest types. Soil samples from eucalypt and pine plantations presented higher values of BM-C (223.72 and 207.39 mg kg-1 of C in the soil, respectively) than samples from Piptadenia rigida and regenerating secondary forest (82.94 and 79.47 mg kg-1 of C in the soil, respectively). Similar results were obtained for the litter layer. On the other hand, the rate of the specific respiration of microbial biomass (TR-BM) was the highest in soil samples collected from the Piptadenia rigida plantation and regenerating secondary forest. The BM-N ranged from 8.05 to 16.08 mg kg-1 of N in the soil. The TR-BM was negatively correlated with soil nitrogen content (r = -0.76**) and with the amount of litter layer (r = -0.68*). The BM-N was also negatively correlated with the nitrogen content of the litter layer (r = -0.52*) and with soil mineral nitrogen content (r = -0.71*). BM-C, BM-N and respiration rate (RR) were positively correlated with soil organic carbon content (r = 0.63*, r = 0.71* and r = 0.76*, respectively). Soil nitrogen content showed significant positive correlation with BM-C and RR (r = 0.77* and r = 0.60* respectively). The results showed that BM-C and BM-N associated to soil organic carbon, soil total-N and TR-BM are sensitive indicators of the dynamics of these elements in the soil, indicating the lower potential of organic matter decomposition in soils under eucalypt and pine.

An experiment was carried out in Serranópolis, State of Goiás, Brazil, aiming to evaluate herbicides efficiency in weeds control and selectivity of the same ones for soybean crop (Glycine max (L.) Merril). The following treatments were utilized: A) 100 g/ha of imazethapyr + surfactante at 0,25% v/v; B) treatment A and 15 days after 230 g/ha of sethoxydim + mineral oil at 0,25% v/v; C) 230 g/ha of sethoxydim + mineral oil at 0,25% v/v; D) 480 + 200 + 230 g/ha of bentazon + fomesafen + sethoxydim + mineral oil at 0,25% v/v; E) 150 g/ha of imazaquim (pre-emergent) and 230 g/ha of sethoxydim + mineral oil at 0,25% v/v; F) 250 g/ha of fomesafen + 187 g/ha of fluazifop-p-butil + surfactant at 0,2% v/v; G) 120 g/ha of imazethapyr + surfactant at 0,25% v/v; H) control with hoeing; I) control without hoeing. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replications. Capim-custódio (Pennisetum setosum (Swartz) L. Rich.) was efficiently controlled by all the chemical treatments where as Falsa-serralha (Emilia sonchifolia DC.) only by the treatment D. Capim-carrapicho(Cenchrus echinatus L.) by G, D, F. Joá-de-capote(Nicandra physaloides (L.) Pers.) by D, F and G. Initial injuries were found in soybean plants in the treatments D, E and. F. Neither height of plants and insertion of the first pod nor grain yield was significantly influenced by the herbicides.
