RESUMO Objetivo: descrever as habilidades de comunicação de crianças com TEA considerando a perspectiva clínica e familiar. Métodos: foi analisada, a partir do ponto de vista dos pais e terapeutas, a linguagem de 10 crianças com TEA. Todas as crianças estavam em acompanhamento fonoaudiológico no ambulatório de uma Clínica Escola de Fonoaudiologia. Foram utilizados dois protocolos para coleta dos dados. O Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist- ATEC, o qual foi aplicado com os pais das crianças, e o Protocolo de Avaliação de Habilidades Pragmáticas de Crianças com Transtornos do Espectro do Autismo - PAHPEA, o qual foi respondido pelos terapeutas. Após aplicação dos protocolos, os dados foram examinados por meio de uma análise estatística descritiva, utilizando-se da frequência absoluta e relativa, e inferencial por meio do teste de associação Qui-quadrado, com significância de 5% para todas as análises. Resultados: de acordo com as respostas apresentadas pelos terapeutas, uma expressiva presença de déficits comunicativos foi observada. No protocolo respondido pelos pais também foi possível observar a mesma tendência, uma vez que as crianças deixaram de pontuar em vários itens da Subescala I. Conclusão: os pais e terapeutas evidenciaram alterações nas habilidades comunicativas das crianças pesquisadas, ressaltando que, assim como os terapeutas, os quais possuem conhecimento técnico linguístico, os pais também podem ser bons informantes sobre o processo de desenvolvimento comunicativo de seus filhos.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the communication skills of children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), considering the clinical and family perspective. Methods: from the point of view of parents and therapists, the language of ten children with ASD was analyzed. All children underwent speech therapy at the outpatient clinic of a Speech Therapy School. Two protocols were used for data collection. Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC), which was applied to the children's parents, and Protocol for Assessment of Pragmatic Skills of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders - called Pragmatic Protocol (PP), which was answered by therapists. The data were examined through a descriptive statistical analysis, considering absolute and relative frequency, and inferential statistics, through the Chi-square test, with a 5% of significance for all analyses. Results: an expressive presence of communicative deficits, in the answers presented by the therapists, was seen. In the protocol answered by the parents, it was also possible to observe the same trend, since the children failed to score in several items of Subscale I. Conclusion: parents and therapists evidenced changes in the communicative skills of the children surveyed, and emphasized that therapists, who have technical linguistic knowledge, like parents, can also be good informants about their children's communicative development process.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar o desempenho de indivíduos com Trissomia 21 (T21) na avaliação simplificada com processamento auditivo central, identificando as habilidades alteradas, e comparar com o resultado obtido no questionário de autopercepção da audição aplicado aos pais. Métodos: estudo descritivo, observacional e de caráter quantitativo realizado na Clínica Escola de Fonoaudiologia de uma universidade pública. A amostra foi composta por 16 indivíduos com T21, com idade entre 8 e 33 anos. Foram realizados os testes da avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo central, tais como: localização, memória sequencial verbal e não-verbal de forma diótica. Em seguida, aplicou-se o questionário de Escala de Funcionamento Auditivo (Scale Of Auditory Behaviors-SAB) aos pais/responsáveis dos indivíduos. Para análise estatística descritiva por meio do teste Qui-quadrado, considerando p<0,05. Resultados: na avaliação simplificada, 81,3% apresentaram resultados alterados para os testes de memória para sons verbais, 75% alterados para o teste de memória para sons não verbais e 37,5% com alteração para o teste de localização sonora. No questionário Escala de Funcionamento Auditivo, 62,5% das respostas indicaram alteração para o processamento auditivo central (PAC), demonstrando que a escala pode ser útil na identificação de alterações do PAC. Entretanto, não se observou associação significante entre o questionário e os resultados dos testes comportamentais. Conclusão: os resultados apontam para alteração das habilidades de memória sequencial verbal e não-verbal na maioria dos indivíduos avaliados. Por sua vez, os resultados da avaliação simplificada indicam necessidade de avaliação do PAC. Sendo assim, considera-se de grande importância a avaliação simplificada para detectar possíveis alterações do processamento auditivo central que podem interferir no aprendizado da comunicação e global dos indivíduos com a presença da trissomia 21.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the performance of individuals with trisomy 21 (T21) in the simplified assessment of central auditory processing, identify the impaired skills, and compare it with the results of the hearing self-perception questionnaire administered to the parents. Methods: a descriptive, observational, quantitative study conducted at the Speech-Language-Hearing Teaching Clinic of a public university. The sample comprised 16 individuals with T21, aged 8 to 33 years. Simplified assessment tests of central auditory processing were conducted, namely, sounds localization and sequential memory for verbal and nonverbal sounds, diotically. Then, the Scale of Auditory Behaviors (SAB) was administered to the subjects’ parents/guardians. The descriptive statistical analysis with the chi-square test considered p<0.05. Results: in the simplified assessment, 81.3% had abnormal results in the memory tests for verbal sounds; 75%, in the memory tests for nonverbal sounds; and 37.5%, in the sound localization test. In the Scale of Auditory Behaviors, 62.5% of the answers indicated changes in the central auditory processing, demonstrating that the scale can be useful to identify such changes. However, there was no significant association between the questionnaire and the behavioral test results. Conclusion: the results point to impaired sequential memory skills for verbal and nonverbal sounds in most individuals assessed. The simplified assessment results indicate the need for assessments of central auditory processing. Hence, the simplified assessment is highly important to detect possible changes in the central auditory processing that might interfere with the communication and overall learning of individuals presented with trisomy 21.

ABSTRACT Purpose: this study aimed to analyze the vocabulary performance of children with Down syndrome, up to 36 months of age, in different semantic categories. Methods: eighteen children with Down syndrome, between 8 and 36 months of age. Section D of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory was applied with guardians: First Words and Gestures, in order to obtain expressive and receptive performance in 22 semantic categories. The data were analyzed in a descriptive and inferential manner, using the Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman's correlation and Tukey's range tests (p <0.05). Results: children had higher performance averages in understanding semantic categories than in understanding and expression. The “action words” were the most understood ones, while the “people” category was the most understood and expressed. The greater the chronological age, the greater the children's vocabulary. A statistical difference was found between the understanding of nouns and other categories, according to chronological age, with a greater performance after 24 months of age. Conclusion: children with Down syndrome, up to 36 months of age, perform better in understanding vocabulary in all semantic categories.

RESUMO Este estudo apresenta análise de aspectos linguísticos, em nível segmental e suprassegmental, em indivíduos com síndrome de Down, com ou sem diagnóstico de apraxia da fala. Participaram dez indivíduos, de ambos os sexos, com idade compreendida entre 13 e 32 anos. A coleta dos dados foi realizada individual e separadamente, em uma sessão terapêutica gravada. As tarefas de fala consistiram em repetição de palavras, repetição de sentenças e fala automática. As amostras de fala foram submetidas a transcrições fonéticas, com a descrição e análise das alterações fonoarticulatórias, tipologia das disfluências e alterações prosódicas. Os dados foram submetidos a análise estatística descritiva e inferencial, utilizando o teste de Mann-Whitney para amostras independentes e considerando como significativo o p-valor≤0.05. Os indivíduos com apraxia de fala (n=6), comparados aos sem (n=4), apresentaram maior ocorrência das alterações fonoarticulatórias, com diferença estatisticamente significante entre os dois grupos nas alterações do tipo omissão (p=0,018) e imprecisão articulatória (p=0,030); maior ocorrência de disfluências, principalmente do tipo repetição de sílaba, e ocorrência de alterações prosódicas (83,3%) que não foram encontradas no grupo sem apraxia de fala. Revela-se a importância do diagnóstico diferencial das alterações de fala na síndrome de Down, com avaliação que considere os distintos aspectos linguísticos, pois as características da fala são diferenciadas e a intervenção clínica deve ser precoce e orientada por parâmetros específicos.

ABSTRACT This study presents an analysis of linguistic aspects at the segmental and suprasegmental levels in individuals with Down syndrome with or without a diagnosis of speech apraxia. Ten individuals of both sexes, aged between 13 and 32 years, participated in the study. Data collection was performed, individually and separately, in a video recorded therapeutic session. Speech tasks consisted of word repetition, repetition of sentences and automatic speech. The speech samples were submitted to phonetic transcription with a description and analysis of phonoarticulatory alterations, typology of disfluencies and prosodic alterations. The data were submitted to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, using the Mann-Whitney test for independent samples and considering p-value≤0.05 as significant. Individuals with speech apraxia (n=6), compared with those without it (n=4), presented a higher occurrence of phonoarticulatory alterations, with a statistically significant difference between the two groups in omission (p=0.018) and articulatory inaccuracy (p=0.030) alterations; a higher occurrence of disfluencies, mainly of the syllable repetition type; and the occurrence of prosodic alterations (83.3%), which was not found in the group without speech apraxia. The importance of the differential diagnosis of speech disorders in Down syndrome is revealed with an evaluation that considers the different linguistic aspects resulting from the differentiation of the characteristics of speech. Clinical intervention should be early and guided by specific parameters.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar as contribuições da intervenção fonoaudiológica para o desenvolvimento da linguagem em crianças com síndrome de Down (SD). Métodos: os participantes da pesquisa foram 11 crianças com SD, entre zero a cinco anos de idade de ambos os sexos, que foram atendidos em um projeto de extensão universitária, durante oito sessões terapêuticas pautadas em diretrizes de estimulação. Antes e após a estimulação fonoaudiológica foi realizada a avaliação das crianças. As diretrizes de estimulação contemplavam os seguintes aspectos do desenvolvimento da linguagem: coordenação dos esquemas sensório-motores; constituição da permanência do objeto; imitação gestual/corporal; imitação de produções orais; imitação diferida e uso de esquema simbólico; intenção comunicativa; vocabulário receptivo e vocabulário expressivo: palavras e frases. O trabalho foi aprovado pelo comitê de ética em pesquisa da instituição de origem. Os dados foram analisados quantitativamente. Resultados: houve diferença estatística nos resultados pré e pós-intervenção fonoaudiológica em habilidades dos parâmetros de: imitação gestual/corporal, imitação de produções orais, imitação diferida e uso de esquema simbólico, intenção comunicativa e vocabulário receptivo. Conclusão: a estimulação precoce de aspectos linguísticos e cognitivos é importante no desenvolvimento da criança com SD, como observado na evolução terapêutica imediata da crianças após a intervenção fonoaudiológica.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the contributions of speech-language therapy to the language development of children with Down syndrome (DS). Methods: eleven children with DS participated in the research. The children were between zero and five years of age, of both genders and attending a university extension project involving eight therapy sessions following stimulation guidelines. Children were evaluated before and after speech-language stimulation. The stimulation guidelines were based on the following aspects of language development: coordination of sensorimotor schema, constitution of object permanence, gestural/body imitation, imitation of utterances, deferred imitation and use of symbolic schema, communicative intent, receptive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary: words and phrases. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the institution. Data were analyzed quantitatively. Results: there were significant differences in the pre- and post-speech-language intervention in the following skills parameters: gestural/body imitation, imitation of utterances, deferred imitation and use of symbolic schema, communicative intent and receptive vocabulary. Conclusion: early stimulation of linguistic and cognitive aspects is important in the development of children with DS, as evidenced by the immediate development of speech-language skills in children after the intervention.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar as contribuições da Fonoaudiologia no processo de inserção no ambiente laboral de jovens com síndrome de Down (SD), tendo em vista sua profissionalização. Método Foi aplicado um questionário em oito alunos de graduação, que fazem parte de um projeto de extensão com pessoas com síndrome de Down, cinco mães das pessoas com SD e quatro funcionários da instituição onde são realizados os estágios. As temáticas exploradas nas questões envolviam aspectos da comunicação, comportamento, interação social, autonomia e independência dos estagiários com síndrome de Down. Os jovens participantes do projeto com SD, denominados estagiários, passaram a fazer parte da rotina de trabalho de cinco setores da universidade em que se realizou a pesquisa. O estudo se caracteriza como descritivo e transversal e os dados foram analisados quanti e qualitativamente, e foi aprovada pelo comitê de ética em pesquisa da instituição de origem. Resultados Segundo os dados pesquisados as habilidades de linguagem das pessoas com SD foram consideradas boas, no entanto as mesmas não estavam efetivas para o mercado de trabalho. Após a inserção em um ambiente de trabalho, foi visto que houve mudanças significativas tanto na comunicação como na autonomia dos sujeitos do estudo. Os mesmos, não são independentes, mas após o estágio também foram perceptíveis mudanças no comportamento social, bem como na sua autonomia. Conclusão Houve mudanças no comportamento social, maior uso da autonomia e ganhos na comunicação, contribuindo no empoderamento dos jovens com síndrome de Down.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the contributions of speech-language therapy in the integration of young individuals with Down syndrome (DS) into the workplace, with reference to their professionalization. Methods A questionnaire was distributed to eight undergraduate students (tutors) who participated in a project with individuals with DS, five mothers of individuals with DS, and five employees from the institution in which the present study was conducted. The questionnaire assessed the communication, memory, behavior, social interaction, autonomy and independence of the participants with DS, called “trainees”. The trainees were employed in one of five routine work sectors at the university that conducted the present study. The data collected in this descriptive and cross-sectional study were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The Research Ethics Committee of the affiliated institute approved the project. Results Mothers and tutors rated the trainees’ language skills as “good”. However, their ratings differed from those of the participating employees. After the trainees with DS were placed in a work environment, significant changes were observed in their communication and autonomy. There was no improvement in the trainees’ independence, but after training noticeable changes were observed in their social behavior and autonomy. Conclusion Speech-language therapy during vocational training led to positive changes in the social behavior of individuals with DS, as evidenced by an increase in their autonomy and communication.
