Epinephelidae forma um grupo de espécies de grande interesse biológico e econômico. Seus padrões filogeográficos são pouco conhecidos, principalmente nas populações distribuídas na região oeste do Oceano Atlântico. Entre seus representantes está a pequena espécie Cephalopholis fulva, Coney, a qual apresenta ampla distribuição geográfica, policromia e hermafroditismo, além de estar se tornando um alvo crescente da exploração pesqueira comercial. Os dados genéticos e histórico-demográficos foram obtidos através da análise de sequências parciais da Região Controle de seis localidades do litoral brasileiro, desde o Nordeste até o Sudeste do Brasil, incluindo as ilhas oceânicas do Atol das Rocas e do arquipélago Fernando de Noronha. As amostras analisadas revelaram uma alta variabilidade genética e um forte fluxo gênico entre as localidades amostradas. Além disso, os dados genéticos relevaram expansões populacionais provavelmente relacionadas às mudanças no nível do mar ocorridas durante o Pleistoceno. A ampla conectividade populacional presente em Coney constitui uma condição relevante para a sua conservação biológica.

The Epinephelidae form a group of species of high biological and economical interests. It´s phylogeographic patterns are not well known especially the distributed populations in the western region of the Atlantic Ocean. Among the representatives is a small species called Cephalopholis fulva, Coney, which presents a wide geographical distribution, polychromia, hermaphroditism and is quickly becoming a large target for the exploration of commercial fishing. The genetic and historical demography were obtained through the partial sequence analysis of Control Region from six locations on the coastline of Brazil from the northeast coast to the southwest coast, including the oceanic islands of Rocas Atoll and Fernando de Noronha Archipelago. The analyzed samples revealed a high genetic variability and a strong gene flow among the sampled locations. Additionally, the genetic data revealed that population expansions probably occurred due to the changes in the sea levels that occurred during the Pleistocene. The large population connectivity found in Coney constitutes relevant conditions for their biological conservation.

Esse estudo analisa dados do vestibular da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais de 2004, mediante um modelo de regressão não paramétrico, o Classification and Regression Trees. Seu objetivo foi identificar os principais fatores de aprovação e, também, verificar se esses fatores eram os mesmos para os cursos diurnos e noturnos. A resposta a essas questões permitiria verificar se a expansão do turno noturno feita por essa universidade vinha promovendo maior inserção social. Observou-se que, em geral, a conclusão do ensino médio em escolas públicas federais ou particulares, o conhecimento de língua estrangeira e o pertencimento a um grupo socioeconômico alto são fatores fortemente associados à aprovação do candidato. Verificou-se, ainda, que nos cursos noturnos as variáveis socioeconômicas têm maior relevância, enquanto nos cursos diurnos a formação do candidato adquire maior peso. Finalmente, o fator socioeconômico médio tende a ser maior para os candidatos aprovados.

This study analyses data from 2004 Federal University of Minas Gerais' general entrance examination, making use of a non-parametrical regression model: the Classification and Regression Trees. Its aims were to identify the main factors of college approval and, also, to verify if these factors were the same for both daytime and nighttime courses, in order to be able to affirm that the expansion of nighttime courses was promoting, in this university, a higher social insertion. In general, it was observed that the attendance to a federal or private high school, the knowledge of foreign languages and a higher socioeconomic status were factors strongly associated with candidates' approval. In nighttime courses, it was found that socioeconomics variables had a higher importance, while variables related to the quality of previous schooling had more weight in daytime courses. The average socioeconomic factor tended to be higher in the group of the approved candidates.

As anemias hereditárias, que englobam as hemoglobinopatias e talassemias são doenças determinadas geneticamente. Na maioria dos casos os heterozigotos são assintomáticos e desconhecem o defeito genético do qual são portadores. De uma forma geral existe uma deficiência no diagnóstico clínico e laboratorial para a investigação destas doenças que acometem uma parcela significativa da população brasileira. A comunicação deste caso à comunidade científica tem como objetivo destacar a importância de um diagnóstico clínico-laboratorial realizado o mais precocemente. Entretanto, este diagnóstico só é possível se for realizado por um profissional capacitado através de metodologias específicas para a elucidação das mais diferentes interações genéticas. Faz parte também deste diagnóstico o estudo familiar que é estritamente necessário no caso de um possível aconselhamento genético com o intuito de evitar a transmissão genética e conseqüentemente a geração de indivíduos doentes ou com uma sobrevida pequena.

Hereditary anaemias, which include hemoglobinopathies and thalassaemias, are genetically determined diseases. In most cases patients are asymptomatic and do not know about their genetic defect. In general, there is a deficit in the clinical and laboratorial investigations of these diseases that affect a significant number of Brazilians. The reporting of this case aims at highlighting the importance of precocious clinical-laboratorial diagnosis. This diagnosis is only possible if it is performed, by a qualified professional, using specific methodologies to elucidate the varying genetic interactions. A study of the affected families is an essential part of the diagnoses; many cases require genetic counseling to avoid transmission of these anomalies resulting in sick individuals who occasionally have short life expectancies.

Among the secondary detection effects in gamma-ray spectroscopy with HPGe detectors that reduce the peak area and must be properly taken into account in accurate measurements, the less well known is counting loss by beta and gamma-ray sum coincidence. The fraction of lost counts was estimated assuming that a photon detection event can sum either with the coincident beta-ray or its bremsstrahlung in the detector capsule or surrounding materials. The beta-ray was tracked through all the materials between source and detector. The result was calculated as a sequence of integral expressions evaluated numerically, without resorting to simulation. It is shown that the counting losses due to this effect are negligible for most calibration sources in typical detector arrangements.

The methodology for simulating all detection processes in a 4<FONT FACE=Symbol>pb-g</FONT> coincidence system by means of the Monte Carlo technique is described. The goal is to predict the behavior of the observed activity as a function of the 4<FONT FACE=Symbol>pb</FONT> detector efficiency. In this approach, the information contained in the decay scheme is used for determining the contribution of all radiations emitted by the selected radionuclide, to the measured spectra by each detector. This simulation yields the shape of the coincidence spectrum, allowing the choice of suitable gamma-ray windows for which the activity can be obtained with maximum accuracy. The simulation can predict a detailed description of the extrapolation curve, mainly in the region where the 4<FONT FACE=Symbol>pb</FONT> detector efficiency approaches 100%, which is experimentally unreachable due to self absorption of low energy electrons in the radioactive source substrate. The theoretical work is being developed with MCNP Monte Carlo code, applied to a gas-flow proportional counter of 4pi geometry, coupled to a pair of NaI(Tl) crystals. The calculated efficiencies are compared to experimental results. The extrapolation curve can be obtained by means of another Monte Carlo algorithm, being developed in the present work, to take into account fundamental characteristics of a complex decay scheme, including different types of radiation and transitions. The present paper shows preliminary calculated values obtained by the simulation and compared to predicted analytical values for a simple decay scheme.

O objetivo dos autores foi comparar dados colhidos através de anamnese/exame físico em nadadores de competição e recreacionais de Porto Alegre, verificando assim se existe relação entre a prática competitiva da natação, dor no ombro e lesão do manguito rotador. Foram avaliados 56 nadadores divididos em dois grupos: grupo I (G1), competidores (n = 32) com idade média de 16,9 ± 2,92 anos, nadando em média 4,56km/dia, 5 a 6 vezes/semana; grupo II (G2), recreacionais (n = 24) com média de idade de 27,25 ± 6,4 anos, nadando em média 1,38km/dia, 2 a 3 vezes/semana. A análise estatística foi feita através do teste do qui-quadrado. No G1, 62% dos nadadores referiram dor em pelo menos um ombro e no G2, 12,5%. No G1, dos 64 ombros avaliados, 34 (53,12%) apresentavam pelo menos um sinal/sintoma significativo. No G2, dos 48 ombros avaliados, 14 (29,17%) apresentavam pelo menos um sinal/sintoma significativo. O teste do qui-quadrado foi aplicado com a = 5% e gl = 1, mostrando que existe relação entre o tipo de natação (competitiva ou recreativa) e presença de sinais/sintomas significantes e relação entre natação competitiva e dor em pelo menos um ombro.

The authors evaluated 56 swimmers from Porto Alegre (112 shoulders) looking for relationships between competitive swimming, shoulder pain and impingement syndrome. The athletes were divided into two groups: group I (G1) with 32 competitive swimmers, and group II (G2) with 24 recreational swimmers. The average age was 16.9 years in G1 and 27.25 years in G2. In G1, the swimmers were training 4.56 Km/day, 5 or 6 times/week, and in G2 they were training 1.38 Km/day, 2 or 3 times/week. In G1, 62% of swimmers had shoulder pain during physical examination, while in G2, only 12.5% had the same symptom. After statistical analysis (c2 test) the authors conclude that there exists a positive relationship between competitive swimming, shoulder pain and impingement syndrome.
