RESUMO OBJETIVOS: Esse estudo teve como objetivo analisar a prevalência de insatisfação com o peso corporal e sua relação com atividade física e estado nutricional em adolescentes. MÉTODO: O estudo envolveu 2.288 adolescentes. A variável dependente foi a insatisfação com o peso corporal. As variáveis independentes foram a atividade física e estado nutricional. Os fatores de confusão foram: sexo e condição econômica. As associações entre as variáveis dependentes e independentes foram analisadas por meio do teste do qui-quadrado e a magnitude das associações foi estimada pela regressão de Poisson. RESULTADOS: Um total de 56,6% dos adolescentes não se declararam satisfeitos com seu peso, 17,9% queriam aumentar, enquanto que 37,7% queriam diminuir o seu peso. Entre meninos e meninas, a insatisfação como peso corporal associou-se com o estado nutricional, obesidade abdominal e atividade física em análises primárias. Após os ajustes, o estado nutricional e a obesidade abdominal permaneceram significativamente associados à insatisfação com o peso corporal em ambos os sexos. CONCLUSÕES: Uma elevada prevalência de insatisfação com o peso corporal foi identificada e associada com o estado nutricional e com obesidade abdominal em adolescentes.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the prevalence of body weight dissatisfaction and its relationship to physical activity and nutritional status in adolescents. METHOD: The study enrolled 2,288 adolescents. The dependent variable was body weight dissatisfaction. The independent variables were physical activity and nutritional status. The confounders were gender, and economic condition. Associations between dependent and independent variables were analyzed through the chi-square test and the magnitude of the associations was estimated by Poisson regression. RESULTS: A total of 56.6% of adolescents were not satisfied with their weight, with 17.9% wanting to increase it, while 37.7% wanted to decrease their weight. In boys and girls, body weight dissatisfaction was associated with nutritional status, abdominal obesity and physical activity in crude analyses. After adjustments, nutritional status and abdominal obesity remained significantly associated to body weight dissatisfaction in both sexes. CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of body weight dissatisfaction was identified, which was associated with the nutritional status and abdominal obesity in adolescents.

Estudos sugerem que pacientes com claudicação intermitente (CI) apresentam respostas hemodinâmicas alteradas durante o teste ergométrico. Contudo, o impacto da severidade da doença nessas respostas ainda não está claro. Em vista disso, o presente estudo analisou o impacto da severidade dos sintomas de CI nas respostas cardiovasculares ao teste de esforço, em indivíduos com doença arterial obstrutiva periférica. Participaram do estudo 47 sujeitos com CI. Foi realizado teste ergométrico em esteira, utilizando protocolo específico para essa população. A amostra foi dividida em três grupos de acordo com a distância obtida no teste de esforço em: 1º tercil, caminhavam entre 210 e 420 metros; 2º tercil, caminhavam entre 450 e 700 metros; e 3º tercil, caminhavam entre 740 e 1060 metros. A pressão arterial sistólica (PAS) e diastólica (PAD), a frequência cardíaca (FC) e o duplo produto (DP) foram obtidos em repouso, no primeiro estágio e no pico de esforço. Nos três tercis, a PAS e a PAD aumentaram significantemente ao longo do teste ergométrico. Nos três tercis, a FC e o DP aumentaram significantemente ao longo do teste e as respostas no 1º tercil foram mais acentuadas que nos demais tercis. Todavia, no pico de esforço, a FC e o DP não houve diferença entre os tercis. Concluíu-se que a severidade da CI não influenciou as respostas da pressão arterial durante o teste ergométrico progressivo, ao passo que maiores valores de FC e DP foram observados em indivíduos com CI mais severa em uma carga submáxima.

Studies suggest that patients with intermittent claudication (IC) present abnormal cardiovascular responses during treadmill exercise. However, it remains unclear whether this response is influenced by the severity of the disease. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of IC severity on cardiovascular responses to an exercise test in subjects with peripheral arterial obstructive disease. Forty-seven men and women with IC, with a mean age of 65±9 years, participated in the study. The subjects underwent an exercise test on a treadmill using a specific protocol for this population. The subjects were divided into three groups according to the distance walked in the test: 1st tertile, walked from 210 to 420 m; 2nd tertile, walked from 450 to 700 m, and 3rd tertile, walked from 740 to 1060 m. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate (HR) and rate-pressure product (RPP) were measured at rest, in the first stage of the treadmill test, and during peak exercise. SBP and DBP increased along the exercise test in the three tertiles. HR and RPP increased along the test in the three tertiles, and these increases were higher in the 1st tertile than in the other tertiles in the first stage. However, similar HR and RPP were observed for the three tertiles during peak exercise. In conclusion, the severity of IC did not affect blood pressure responses during treadmill exercise. However, HR and RPP were higher during submaximal exercise in subjects with more severe IC.

FUNDAMENTO: Em razão das controvérsias existentes na literatura quanto aos possíveis benefícios do treinamento resistido (TR) sobre a pressão arterial de repouso (PA) e por causa da escassez de estudos com indivíduos idosos e hipertensos, o TR é pouco recomendado como forma de tratamento não-farmacológico da hipertensão arterial. OBJETIVO: Verificar os efeitos do TR progressivo sobre a pressão arterial de repouso (PA), a freqüência cardíaca (FC) e o duplo produto (DP) em idosas hipertensas controladas. MÉTODOS: Vinte mulheres idosas (66,8 ± 5,6 anos de idade) sedentárias, controladas com medicação anti-hipertensiva, realizaram 12 semanas de TR, compondo o grupo do treinamento resistido (GTR). Vinte e seis idosas (65,3 ± 3,4 anos de idade) hipertensas controladas não realizaram exercícios físicos durante a pesquisa, constituindo o grupo-controle. RESULTADOS: Houve redução significativa nos valores de repouso da pressão arterial sistólica (PAS), da pressão arterial média (PAM) e do DP após o TR. Não foram encontradas reduções significativas na pressão arterial diastólica (PAD) e na FC de repouso após o TR em ambos os grupos. A magnitude da queda no GTR foi de 10,5 mmHg, 6,2 mmHg e 2.218,6 mmHg x bpm para a PAS, PAM e o DP, respectivamente. CONCLUSÃO: O TR progressivo reduziu a PAS, PAM e o DP de repouso de idosas hipertensas, controladas com medicação anti-hipertensiva.

BACKGROUND: Due to the existing controversies in literature about the potential benefits of resistance exercise training (RT) on arterial blood pressure (BP) at rest, and the lack of studies conducted with elderly hypertensive individuals, RT is seldom recommended as a non-pharmacological treatment for arterial hypertension. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effect of progressive RT on BP, HR, and RPP in elderly women with controlled hypertension. METHODS: 20 elderly women (66.8 ± 5.6 years of age), with a sedentary lifestyle, monitored with anti-hypertensive medication, participated in a 12-week RT program (resistance training group - RTG). Twenty-six elderly women (65.3 ± 3.4 years of age) with controlled hypertension did not engage in physical exercise during the study period, and composed the control group. RESULTS: After RT, there was a significant reduction in SBP, MBP, and DP values at rest. No significant drops in DBP and HR values at rest were observed after RT in both groups. The reduction in the RTG was 10.5 mmHg, 6.2 mmHg, and 2218.6 mmHg x bpm for SBP, MBP, and RPP, respectively. CONCLUSION: Progressive RT reduced SBP, MBP, and RPP values at rest of hypertensive elderly women who were on anti-hypertensive treatment.
