Abstract Ovulation synchronization protocols are well established in beef and dairy cows. However, the protocol response rate is around 70-90%. In beef cows, factors such as inadequate nutrition and calf presence negatively impact the response of progesterone (P4)/estradiol-based ovulation synchronization protocols by interfering with GnRH release and consequently reducing LH pulsatility and final follicular development. In dairy cows, protocols based on GnRH and prostaglandin (Ovsynch) are the most widely used in the world. However, the efficiency of Ovsynch is dependent on the presence of a large follicle at the time of administration of the first GnRH. In these ovulation synchronization protocols, pre-synchronization protocols (Prostaglandins, Double Ovsynch and P4synch) are usually attempted in an effort to increase responses. Thus, the objective of this review was to discuss pre-ovulation synchronization strategies (administration of injectable P4 or energetic/protein supplementation or pre-synchronization with intra-vaginal progesterone devices) aiming to increase the LH pulsatility in beef cows or induce the formation of a GnRH-responsive follicle at the beginning of the Ovsynch protocol in dairy cows.

Neste estudo, a riqueza e a abundância de espécies de morcegos foram estudadas em quatro reservas naturais, incluindo uma área cárstica com muitas cavernas e fendas em rochas, que constituem abrigos rochosos potenciais para os morcegos. As reservas encontram-se dentro da região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte-MG, uma das mais povoadas do Brasil, e dentro dos domínios de Floresta Atlântica e do Cerrado. Os morcegos foram amostrados com redes de neblina (mist-nets) e, na área cárstica, também foi realizada busca ativa por morcegos em seus abrigos. Foram capturados 1.599 morcegos de 30 espécies, pertencentes a quatro famílias. Houve pouca similaridade entre as faunas de quirópteros analisadas. A maior riqueza foi encontrada na área cárstica, com 22 espécies registradas com redes de neblina e em seus abrigos; entretanto, estimativas de riqueza indicaram a necessidade de mais estudos nas outras áreas. Do total amostrado, 265 indivíduos de 14 espécies foram capturados em 56 abrigos. A maioria dos abrigos era ocupada no período diurno e de uso frequente; os morcegos presentes eram filostomídeos, exceto Myotis nigricans (Vespertilionidae), Nyctinomops laticaudatus (Molossidae) e Peropteryx macrotis (Emballonuridae). O hematófago Desmodus rotundus foi o mais frequente nos abrigos. O resultado deste estudo indica a importância da manutenção de diferentes áreas para a conservação dos quirópteros em região caracterizada como zona de transição vegetacional e com intensa atividade econômica e impacto ambiental. Este estudo demonstra também a importância dos abrigos rochosos para a riqueza local de espécies e a importância de busca ativa por morcegos em seus abrigos diurnos para uma amostragem mais efetiva da fauna local destes quirópteros.

Species richness and abundance of bats were studied in four nature reserves, including a karst area which has many potential rocky shelters for bats, such as caves and rock crevices. The reserves were located in the greater Belo Horizonte metropolitan area, one of the most populated regions of Brazil, within the Atlantic Forest, and Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) ecological domains. Bats were sampled using mist-nets and, in the karst area, also by active searches in shelters. A total of 1,599 bats were captured representing 30 species belonging to four families. There was little similarity among the four chiropteran faunas. The greatest species richness was found in the karst area with 22 species recorded whereas richness estimates in the other areas indicated the need for further studies. Two hundred and sixty-five individuals of 14 species were captured from 56 shelters. Most of the shelters were frequently used for diurnal roosts, and all the bats found belonged to the Phyllostomidae, with the exception of Myotis nigricans (Vespertilionidae), Nyctinomops laticaudatus (Molossidae) and Peropteryx macrotis (Emballonuridae). The sanguinivorous Desmodus rotundus was the most common species in the shelters. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of maintaining multiple protected areas to ensure a representative fauna of bats in a region characterized by a vegetation transition zone and with intense economic activity and high environmental impact. This study also demonstrates the importance of rock shelters for maintaining local bat richness and the importance of active searches for bats in their diurnal roosts for a more thorough sampling of the bat fauna at a given locality.

OBJETIVOS: relatos da literatura mostram que não há dados conclusivos sobre a associação entre a endometriose e as concentrações de hormônios envolvidos no controle da reprodução. Este estudo foi realizado para determinar as concentrações de FSH, LH, estradiol (E), progesterona (P) e histamina (Hi) no soro, no fluido peritoneal e no fluido folicular de mulheres com e sem endometriose. MÉTODOS: a extensão da doença foi estadiada de acordo com a American Fertility Society classification (1997). Para a coleta de soro e de fluido peritoneal foram selecionadas 28 mulheres com endometriose submetidas à laparoscopia diagnóstica (18 mulheres inférteis com endometriose I-II e dez mulheres inférteis com endometriose III-IV). Para o grupo controle, foram selecionadas 21 mulheres férteis submetidas à laparoscopia para esterilização tubárea. O fluido folicular foi obtido de 39 mulheres inférteis submetidas a fertilização in vitro (21 mulheres com endometriose e 18 mulheres sem endometriose). RESULTADOS: as concentrações de FSH e LH no soro, no fluido peritoneal e no fluido folicular não diferiram significativamente entre os grupos. As concentrações de E e P no fluido peritoneal foram significativamente mais baixas em mulheres inférteis com endometriose (E: 154,2±15,3 para estágios I-II e 89,3±9,8 ng/mL para estágios III-IV; P: 11,2±1,5 para estágios I-II e 7,6±0,8 ng/mL para estágios III-IV) em comparação com mulheres controle (E: 289,1±30,1; P: 32,8±4,1 ng/mL) (Testes de Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn; p<0,05). No soro, as concentrações de E e P seguiram o mesmo padrão. No fluido folicular, as concentrações de E e Hi foram significativamente mais baixas em mulheres com endometriose (E: 97,4±11,1 ng/mL; Hi: 6,6±0,9 ng/mL) em comparação com mulheres sem endometriose (E: 237,5±28,5 pg/mL; Hi: 13,8±1,3 ng/mL), enquanto os níveis de P não revelaram diferença significativa entre os grupos (teste t de Student; p<0,05). CONCLUSÕES: nossos resultados indicam disfunção ovariana em mulheres com endometriose, com redução nas concentrações de estradiol, progesterona e histamina, o que pode contribuir para a subfertilidade freqüentemente associada à doença.

PURPOSE: literature reports show that there are no conclusive data about the association between endometriosis and the concentrations of hormones involved in the control of reproduction. Thus, the present study was undertaken to determine FSH, LH, estradiol (E), progesterone (P), and histamine (Hi) concentrations in serum, peritoneal fluid and follicular fluid of women with and without endometriosis. METHODS: the extent of the disease was staged according to the revised American Fertility Society classification (1997). For the collection of serum and peritoneal fluid, 28 women with endometriosis undergoing diagnostic laparoscopy were selected (18 infertile women with endometriosis I-II and ten infertile women with endometriosis III-IV). For the control group, 21 fertile women undergoing laparoscopy for tubal sterilization were selected. Follicular fluid was obtained from 39 infertile women undergoing in vitro fertilization (21 women with endometriosis and 18 women without endometriosis). RESULTS: FSH and LH levels in serum, peritoneal fluid and follicular fluid did not differ significantly between groups. On the other hand, E and P concentrations in the peritoneal fluid were significantly lower in infertile women with endometriosis (E: 154.2±15.3 for stages I-II and 89.3 ng/mL±9.8 ng/mL for stages III-IV; P: 11.2±1.5 for stages I-II and 7.6 ng/mL±0.8 for stages III-IV) in comparison with control women (E: 289.1 ng/mL±30.1; P: 32.8±4.1 ng/mL) (Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn tests; p<0.05). In serum, estradiol and progesterone concentrations followed the same pattern. In the follicular fluid, E and Hi concentrations were significantly lower in women with endometriosis (E: 97.4±11.1 pg/mL; Hi: 6.6±0.9 ng/mL) in comparison to women without endometriosis (E: 237.5±28.5 pg/mL; Hi: 13.8±1.3 ng/mL) (Student t-test; p<0.05), while progesterone levels revealed no significant difference between groups. CONCLUSIONS: our results indicate ovary dysfunction in women with endometriosis, with reduction on E, P and Hi concentrations, which may contribute to the subfertility often associated with the disease.

A maturação in vitro, fecundação e as técnicas de cultivo de embriões na espécie eqüina são extremamente importantes e necessárias para se examinar as causas de repetição de cio, redução de concepção em éguas velhas e também para a preservação da espécie eqüina. Para avaliar o efeito das gonadotrofinas na regulação da maturação nuclear de oócitos eqüinos, folículos com diâmetro entre 5 a 20mm foram aspirados de 551 ovários provenientes de matadouro obtendo-se 408 oócitos aptos para cultivo. Após a aspiração, os oócitos foram avaliados no próprio líquido folicular quanto a sua integridade e distribuídos nos diferentes tratamentos. No Tratamento I (T1) - grupo controle - os oócitos (n=92) foram cultivados em TCM-199 modificado (mod.), com 25mM de HEPES, 2,2mg/ml de bicarbonato de sódio, 1 mi g/ml 17-beta estradiol, 250mi M de piruvato de sódio e 0,4% de albumina sérica bovina. No tratamento 2 (T2), os oócitos (n= 108) foram cultivados no mesmo meio TC M-199 mod. acrescido de lug/ml de hormônio luteinizante suíno (LHs). No Tratamento 3 (T3), os oócitos (n=102) também foram cultivados em TCM-199 mod. porém com 0,5mi g/ml de hormônio folículo estimulante suíno (FSHs) e no Tratamento 4 (T4) os oócitos (n= 106) foram cultivados com 1mi g/ml de LHs e 0,5mi g/ml, de FSHs. Os oócitos dos quatros tratamentos foram cultivados em estufa a 39°C com 5% de CO2 , e 95% de umidade relativa no ar, durante 24 h. Após este período, as células do Cumulus oophorus foram removidas e os oócitos fixados em solução de ácido acético glacial-metanol (1:3) em placas de Petri 10 x 35mm por 24h sendo posteriormente corados com aceto-orceína. O percentual de oócitos em telófase I / metáfase II foi de 55,6% (59/106) para o T4 (FSHs/LHs) e de 53,9% (55/102) para o T3 (FSHs), os quais não diferiram significativamente. No entanto, estes percentuais foram significativamente superiores (p<0,05) aos observados no Tratamento 1 (22,8%; 21/92) e no Tratamento 2 (32,4%; 35/108). Estes resultados demonstram que o FSHs estimula a maturação nuclear in vitro pois o percentual de oócitos maturos aumentou quando os mesmos foram tratados com FSHs/LHs ou com FSHs somente. O LHs isoladamente, nas concentrações utilizadas, não estimula a maturação nuclear em oócitos eqüinos.

In vitro maturation, in vitro fertilization and embryo culture in equine are extremely important and necessaries for examining reproductive problems in the mare. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of gonadotropins on nuclear maturation of equine oocytes. Follicles-smaller than 20mm were aspirated from 551 ovaries obtained at slaughterhouse, 408 oocytes suitable for culture being recovered. After aspiration, oocytes were evaluated in follicular fluid and distributed in four treatments. In the first treatment, control group, oocytes (n=92) were cultured for 24 hours in modifled TCM-199 with 25mM HEPES, 2.2mg/ml sodium bicarbonate, 1mug/ml 17 beta estradiol, 250mu M piruvic acid and 0.4% bovino serum albumin. In the second treatment, oocytes (n=108) were cultured in modified TC M-199 plus 1mu g/ml porcine LH. In the third treatment, 102 oocytes were cultured in modifled TCM-199 with the addition of 0.5mu g/ml porcino FSH and on the fourth treatment oocytes (n=106) were cultured in modifled TC M-199 with 1mu g/ml porcine LH and 0.5mug/ml porcine FSH. All four groups were cultured for 24h in an atmosphere with 5% CO2 at 39°C. Afterwards, cumulus cells were removed and oocytes were fixed in acetic acid-methanol (1:3) solution for 24h and stained with aceto-orcein. A significantly greater percentage of MII was observed in oocytes cultured with FSH/LH 59/106 (55.6%) and with FSH 55/102 (53,9%) than in the other groups. When oocytes were cultured in the presence of porcine LH, only 35/108 (32,4%) reached the MII stage, a similar percentage being obtained with the control group. This results demonstrate that equine oocytes cultured in vitro are stimulated to reach metaphase II when they are cultured in the presence of porcine FSH alone or added with porcine LH. Otherwise, porcine LH alone does not stimulate nuclear maturation beyond that obtained with oocytes cultured in the absence of gonadotropins.
