Abstract This paper describes a case study based on the implementation of a project/service-based learning approach in the context of a curricular unit of an Engineering Education programme. It discusses the challenges and pedagogic responses found to adapt the teaching and learning process to the pandemic period, reflecting on the lessons learned to improve project/service-based learning approaches. For data collection, an online questionnaire was applied to students to collect feedback about the effectiveness of the approach adopted. The results from the questionnaire indicate that students considered the alternatives implemented by the professor completely adequate to respond to the COVID-19 constraints. The results from students’ projects revealed that they were able to go beyond what was expected from them, by presenting clear and effective outcomes of the implementation of the project in their own domestic environments. Lessons learned include ways to enhance student learning, drawing on examples from students’ own personal contexts.

Resumen Este artículo describe un estudio de caso basado en la implementación de un enfoque de aprendizaje basado en proyectos/servicios en el contexto de una unidad curricular de un programa de Educación en Ingeniería. Discute los desafíos y las respuestas pedagógicas encontradas para adaptar el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje al período de la pandemia, reflexionando sobre las lecciones aprendidas para mejorar los enfoques de aprendizaje basados en proyectos/servicios. Para la recopilación de datos, se aplicó un cuestionario en línea a los estudiantes para recopilar comentarios sobre la efectividad del enfoque adoptado. Los resultados del cuestionario indican que los estudiantes consideraron las alternativas implementadas por el docente, completamente adecuadas para responder a las limitaciones del COVID-19. Los resultados de los proyectos de los estudiantes revelaron que fueron capaces de ir más allá de lo que se esperaba de ellos, presentando resultados claros y efectivos de la implementación del proyecto en sus propios entornos nacionales. Las lecciones aprendidas incluyen formas de mejorar el aprendizaje de los estudiantes, basándose en ejemplos de los propios contextos personales de los estudiantes.

Resumo Este artigo descreve um estudo de caso baseado na implementação de uma abordagem de aprendizagem baseada em projeto/serviço no contexto de uma unidade curricular de um programa de Ensino de Engenharia. Discute os desafios e as respostas pedagógicas encontradas para adequar o processo de ensino e aprendizagem à realidade da pandemia, identificando oportunidades de melhoria através das lições aprendidas. Para a recolha de dados, foi aplicado um questionário online aos estudantes, para recolha de feedback. Os resultados do questionário indicam que os estudantes consideraram adequadas as alternativas implementadas pelo professor para responder aos constrangimentos da COVID-19. Os resultados dos projetos revelaram que os estudantes foram além do esperado, em termos da concretização do projeto no seu próprio ambiente doméstico. As lições aprendidas incluem formas de melhorar a aprendizagem, baseando-se em exemplos provenientes da experiência dos próprios estudantes.

Abstract Paper aims This work aims to develop a systematized approach for the reduction of medical appointment waiting lists, proposing an optimization decision-making model followed by continuous people engagement towards a systematic approach for waiting list problem-solving. Originality There are several studies related to waiting lists in healthcare contexts, however, the present study presents an innovative approach for waiting list problem-solving by proposing prescriptive decision-making models followed by continuous improvement and people engagement. Research method A research approach with the following phases was developed: system analysis, problem quantification, and development of an optimization model. After these phases, the model was applied, and the results were analysed, as contributions to a systematized model. Main findings The model was applied to the screening waiting list for orthopaedics appointments followed by the fundamental involvement of medical doctors, which made it possible to implement the optimal solution generated by the model, resulting in a reduction of 90% by 56 days in waiting time for the screening process. Implications for theory and practice This model contributes for theory and for practice as a way to deal with different scenarios for waiting list reduction in the upcoming days during and after the pandemic.

Introdução: O Pneumomediastino espontâneo é uma entidade rara na infância, sendo na maioria dos casos desencadeado por uma crise asmática grave. A dor torácica e dispneia são os sintomas mais frequentes de apresentação, sendo o diagnóstico feito habitualmente pela radiografia de tórax. O trata mento conservador é preferencial, com prognóstico favorável. Casos clínicos: O primeiro caso, um adolescente de 14 anos, com o diagnóstico de pneumomediastino e enfisema subcutâneo espontâneos, sem fator desencadeante evidente, apesar de ter antecedentes de asma. O segundo caso, uma criança de 19 meses que desenvolveu, como complicação de uma pneumonia, um pneumomediastino espontâneo toraco-cervical e um pneumotórax. A evolução foi favorável, no primeiro caso apenas com medidas sintomáticas e no segundo, houve necessidade de colo cação de dreno torácico com melhoria progressiva do quadro respiratório. Discussão/conclusões: Estes casos constituem exemplos de pneumomediastino espontâneo que se destacam pela raridade desta patologia nesta faixa etária.

Introduction: Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is a rare clinical condition in childhood that occurs in most cases with exacerbations of asthma. The most common symptoms are chest pain and dyspnea. Diagnosis is usually made by chest radiography. Conservative treatment is preferred with a favorable prognosis. Case reports: The first case, a 14-year-old boy with spontaneous pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema diagnosis, without triggering factor, despite history of asthma. The second one, a 19-month-old boy who developed, as a complication of pneumonia, a spontaneous thoraco-cervical pneumomediastinum and pneumothorax. The evolution was favorable, in the first case only with symptomatic treatment and in the second, progressive respiratory improvement was observed, after a chest drain insertion. Discussion/Conclusions: These cases are examples of spontaneous pneumomediastinum that highlights the rarity of this disease in this age group.

Abstract The development of projects in industrial context constitutes an exceptional opportunity for engineering students to develop competences expected by the labour market. Therefore, the adoption of this type of interaction within engineering curricula is highly recommended, not only at the end of the degree, but also in the previous years. The main purpose of this paper is to present and analyse a Project-Based Learning (PBL) semester in which six teams of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) students integrate different areas of knowledge, while solving real problems of five companies, emphasizing the technical solutions developed by the students and the feedback provided by the companies. Students’ feedback will be also addressed. The main outcomes of this study reveal that most of the technical solutions lie in areas of Lean applications and ergonomic improvement of workplaces. Companies were very pleased with the results of this type of University-Business Cooperation (UBC).

CONTEXTO: La enfermedad, cualquiera que sea su naturaleza, es vivida por la persona como una agresión, evolucionando muchas veces a una incapacidad del individuo que se repercute en el contexto familiar. OBJECTIVO: La satisfacción del familiar cuidador y las su fuentes de satisfacción. METODOLOGÍA: La recogida de datos socioclínicos del enfermo con psicosis es un cuestionario hacia el familiar cuidador, heterorelleno, para la recogida de los datos psicosociales, aplicación del Escala de Evaluación de la Espiritualidad, a Carer´s Assessment of Satisfactions Index (CASI), versión portuguesa. RESULTADOS: Los factores de CASI que más contribuyen para la satisfacción del familiar cuidador son la dinámica de los resultados y desempeño de su función al cuidado. El contexto de cuidar es el factor que mejor explica la variación de la escala global (CASI). La atribución de un significado de vida, la de la esperanza y una perspectiva de la vida positiva constituyeron frentes de satisfacción en particular en el contexto del cuidador para con el familiar cuidado. CONCLUSIÓN: Son varias las fuentes de familiar cuidador en prestación de cuidados al enfermo mental, que podrán constituir un desafío para el Enfermo de Salud Mental y Psiquiatría, en el sentido de preservar, promover y potenciar las capacidades durante el proceso de cuidar, ya sea del enfermo o del familiar cuidador.

METODOLOGIA: Questionário para recolha de dados socioclínicos do doente com psicose e um questionário dirigido ao familiar cuidador, heteropreenchido, para recolha dos dados psicossociais, aplicação da Escala de Avaliação da Espiritualidade, a Carers’ Assessment of Satisfactions Index (CASI), versão portuguesa. RESULTADOS: Os fatores do CASI que mais contribuem para a satisfação do familiar cuidador são a dinâmica dos resultados e o desempenho do papel de cuidador. O contexto de cuidar é o fator que melhor explica a variância da escala global (CASI). A atribuição de um significado de vida, a da esperança e uma perspetiva de vida positiva constituíram fontes de satisfação em particular no contexto de cuidar para o familiar cuidador. CONCLUSÕES: São várias as fontes de satisfação do familiar cuidador no prestação de cuidados pessoa mentalmente doente, que poderão constituir um desafio para o Enfermeiro de Saúde Mental e Psiquiatria, no sentido de preservar, promover e potencializar as capacidades no processo de cuidar, quer da pessoa quer do familiar cuidador.

CONTEXT: Illness, whatever its nature may be, is often felt as an aggression on the individual and conducive to an incapacitative state with repercussions within the family context. OBJECTIVE: The main question this research aims to sources of satisfaction, will be described through this research. METHODS: A questionnaire was aplied to the patient with psychosis to gather socio-clinical data. Another questionnaire, aimed at the family caregiver, was carried-out by the investigator to gather psychosocial data, aplication of the data on two scales; the Escala de Avaliação da Espiritualidade scale, Carer’s Assessment of Satisfaction Index (CASI), the Portuguese version. RESULTS: The CASI factors which contribute the most to the family caregiver are the dynamics of the results and the caregiver’s performance. The caring context is the factor which best explains and relates to the variance of the global scale (CASI). A sense of meaning of life, hope and a positive outlook on life can be identified as sources of satisfaction for the family member carrying out the caregiver role. CONCLUSION: There are several sources of satisfaction for the family member, when carrying out the role of caregiver of the mentally persons, which may present themselves as tools for the psychiatric and mental health nurse, aimed to preserve, promote and potentiate his/her capacity in the caring process, with benefits to both the mentally persons and family caregiver.

The authors describe a clinical case of a 5-months-old boy with widespread rash since the first month of life. Diffuse popular rash with intensive itching. The shaved skin was inconclusive so we performed biopsy to confirm the diagnosis of scabies It’s a dermatosis very contagious caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. In infants skin eruption may have a polymorphic presentation with characteristic distribution.

Pacientes com Aids (n=39) foram acompanhados por um período máximo de 36 meses, após os quais se analisou os tipos e topografias das complicações infecciosas apresentadas e a sobrevida dos mesmos, correlacionado-se esses parâmetros com os níveis de vitamina A que apresentavam no início do seguimento clínico. Vinte e um (53,8%)pacientes tinham níveis de retinol no soro abaixo de 1,6mimol/L, dos quais 12 (57%) abaixo de 1,05mimol/L. Não houve associação de carência de vitamina A com os tipos ou topografias das complicações infecciosas que ocorreram durante o período de seguimento. Muito embora a sobrevida média no final dos 36 meses tenha sido semelhante nos dois grupos, os pacientes com carência de retinol apresentaram menor probabilidade de sobrevida nos primeiros 24 meses de acompanhamento (8,44 meses x 16,42 meses; p= 0,003).

Patients with Aids (n = 39) were followed up for a maximum period of 36 weeks, after which the types and topographies of infectious complications presented and patient survival were analyzed and correlated with the vitamin A levels presented by the patients at the beginning of clinical follow-up. Twenty-one (53,8%) patients presented serum retinol levels below 1.6mumol/L, 12 (57%) of whom had values lower than 1.05mumol/L. There was no correlation between low serum vitamin A levels and the types or topographies of the infectious complications that occurred during the follow-up period. Although mean survival at the end of the 36 months follow-up period was similar for the two groups, patients with retinol deficiency presented a lower probability of survival during the first 24 months of follow-up compared to patients without hypovitaminosis A (8.44 x 1.42 months; p = 0.003).
