Oxidative and osmotolerant effects in Salvator merianae (Squamata: Teiidae) red blood cells during hibernation

Resumo A hibernação é uma condição natural dos animais que vivem na zona temperada, embora alguns lagartos tropicais também experenciem hibernação anualmente, como é o caso do lagarto nativo da América do Sul, Salvator merianae ou “teiú”. Embora as características fisiológicas e metabólicas associadas à hibernação tenham sido amplamente estudadas, possíveis alterações na integridade das hemácias durante esse período ainda permanecem obscuras. A desidratação e o jejum são consequências naturais da hibernação por vários meses e podem estar relacionadas a algumas modificações celulares. Neste estudo, investigamos se a tolerância osmótica de hemácias do lagarto teiú sob hibernação são diferentes das células obtidas de animais em atividade normal. Além disso, investigamos indiretamente por meio da quantificação de biomoléculas oxidadas e da atividade de enzimas antioxidantes se a membrana das hemácias dos teiús em hibernação poderia estar associada à oxidação. Nossos resultados sugerem que as hemácias possuem maior fragilidade durante o período de hibernação, embora não tenhamos encontrado evidências de um cenário de estresse oxidativo associado à essa fragilidade acentuada. Embora não tenhamos excluído a possibilidade de dano oxidativo durante a hibernação, sugerimos que um aumento no volume das hemácias como consequência de sangue hipoosmótico durante a hibernação também poderia afetar a integridade de hemácias, tal como foi observado.
Abstract Hibernation is a natural condition of animals that lives in the temperate zone, although some tropical lizards also experience hibernation annually, such as the lizard native from South America, Salvator merianae, or “tegu” lizard. Even though physiological and metabolic characteristic associated with hibernation have been extensively studied, possible alterations in the red blood cells (RBC) integrity during this period remains unclear. Dehydration and fasting are natural consequences of hibernating for several months and it could be related to some cellular modifications. In this study, we investigated if the osmotic tolerance of RBCs of tegu lizard under hibernation is different from the cells obtained from animals while normal activity. Additionally, we indirectly investigated if the RBCs membrane of hibernating tegus could be associated with oxidation by quantifying oxidized biomolecules and the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Our findings suggest that RBCs are more fragile during the hibernation period, although we did not find evidence of an oxidative stress scenario associated with the accentuated fragility. Even though we did not exclude the possibility of oxidative damage during hibernation, we suggested that an increased RBCs volume as a consequence of hypoosmotic blood during hibernation could also affect RBCs integrity as noted.

Control of hairy fleabane in sequential and pre-emergence applications in soybean crops

ABSTRACT The control of Conyza spp. can be conducted at different times in the soybean crop. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of controlling Conyza spp. by positioning herbicides at different times and their selectivity in the soybean crop. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in a randomized block design with four replications. A first application of 2.4-D + glyphosate (975 + 1500 g of active ingredient [a.i.] ha-1) was conducted, followed by the following treatments: glufosinate (500 g i.a. ha-1), diquat (400 g a.i. ha-1), and saflufenacil + glyphosate (50 + 1500 g a.i. ha-1 ) and a third application of the pre-emergents flumioxazin + imazethapyr (60 + 127 g i. a. ha-1), sulfentrazone + diuron (210 + 420 g a.i. ha-1), diclosulam (35 g a.i. ha-1), and s-metolaclhor (1440 g a.i. ha-1), in addition to the control treatment. High percentages of control were obtained with saflufenacil + glyphosate and diquat. Glufosinate provided satisfactory control seven days after the treatment (DAT) application, with regrowth throughout the evaluations, except when diclosulam was applied. The pre-emergent herbicides reduced the emergence of Conyza spp. resulting in 0.25 plants m-2 when flumioxazin + imazethapyr was applied at 28 DAT. Regardless of the treatment, the soybean crop had no significant phytotoxicity. The management of Conyza spp. with the positioning of herbicides at different times proved to be more efficient when the sequential use of diquat and/or saflufenacil + glyphosate and flumioxazin + imazethapyr in pre-emergence was carried out.
RESUMO O controle de espécies de Conyza spp., pode ser efetuado em diferentes períodos na cultura da soja. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência no controle de Conyza spp. através do posicionamento de herbicidas em diferentes momentos, e sua seletividade na cultura da soja. O experimento foi realizado em campo no delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Foi realizada uma primeira aplicação de 2,4-D + glyphosate (975 + 1500 g de ingrediente ativo [i.a.] ha-1) e na sequencial os tratamentos: glufosinate (500 g i.a. ha-1), diquat (400 g i.a. ha-1) e saflufenacil + glyphosate (50 + 1500 g i.a. ha-1 ) e uma terceira aplicação dos préemergentes flumioxazin + imazethapyr (60 + 127 g i.a. ha-1), sulfentrazone + diuron (210 + 420 g i.a. ha-1), diclosulam (35 g i.a. ha-1) e s-metolaclhor (1440 g i.a. ha-1), além das testemunhas. Altas porcentagens de controle foram obtidas com saflufenacil + glyphosate ou diquat. O glufosinate, proporcionou controle satisfatório 7 dias após a aplicação dos tratamentos (DAT), com rebrotas ao longo das avaliações, exceto quando ocorreu aplicação do diclosulam. Os herbicidas pré-emergentes diminuíram a emergência de Conyza spp. resultando em 0,25 plantas m-2, na aplicação de flumioxazin + imazethapyr aos 28 DAT. Não houve fitotoxicidade significativa na cultura da soja independente do tratamento. O manejo de Conyza spp. através do posicionamento de herbicidas em diferentes momentos, mostrou-se mais eficiente quando realizado a sequencial de diquat e/ou saflufenacil + glyphosate e flumioxazin + imazethapyr em pré-emergência.

Abstract The theory of multiconductor transmission lines is based on the principle of superposition. According to this principle, any electric or magnetic field can be represented as the sum of individual electric or magnetic fields. This theory is used to analyze and design electrical systems involving multiple conductors. In this work, the procedures for analyzing electromagnetic transients in 3-conductor transmission lines are presented, which is the last step for generalization in the case of lines to “n” conductors. The paper presents elementary cases and a more general one to illustrate such an approach.

Valsartan is an antihypertensive active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), it is used in the amorphous state in the commercial products. As amorphous materials are metastable, amorphous valsartan can crystallize to valsartan E, promoting changes in the dissolution and bioavailability of the drug. Tablets containing metastable forms of APIs need special conditions for transport and storage in order to avoid crystallization (from amorphous state) or polymorphic transitions (from less stable crystalline structures). A multivariate calibration model based on interval partial least squares (iPLS) regression allied to net analyte signal (NAS) algorithm was built to simultaneously quantify amorphous (VAL-AM) and crystalline (VAL-E) valsartan. Mixtures of VAL-AM and VAL-E were used to produce tablets in order to simulate the crystallization of VAL-AM in a range from 0 to 100% of conversion. The calibration set included 11 samples and 5 samples were used as the external validation set. The following parameters of merit (POM) were obtained for both polymorphs in order to evaluate the calibration model quality: root mean square error (RMSE) for cross validation (RMSECV), validation (RMSEV) and calibration (RMSEC), sensitivity (SEN), selectivity (SEL), analytical sensitivity (γ), inverse analytical sensitivity (γ−1), limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ).

Abstract Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are the latest class of drugs approved to treat type 2 DM (T2DM). Although adverse effects are often caused by a metabolite rather than the drug itself, only the safety assessment of disproportionate drug metabolites is usually performed, which is of particular concern for drugs of chronic use, such as SGLT2i. Bearing this in mind, in silico tools are efficient strategies to reveal the risk assessment of metabolites, being endorsed by many regulatory agencies. Thereby, the goal of this study was to apply in silico methods to provide the metabolites toxicity assessment of the SGLT2i. Toxicological assessment from SGLT2i metabolites retrieved from the literature was estimated using the structure and/or statistical-based alert implemented in DataWarrior and ADMET predictorTM softwares. The drugs and their metabolites displayed no mutagenic, tumorigenic or cardiotoxic risks. Still, M1-2 and M3-1 were recognized as potential hepatotoxic compounds and M1-2, M1-3, M3-1, M3-2, M3-3 and M4-3, were estimated to have very toxic LD50 values in rats. All SGLT2i and the metabolites M3-4, M4-1 and M4-2, were predicted to have reproductive toxicity. These results support the awareness that metabolites may be potential mediators of drug-induced toxicities of the therapeutic agents.

In vitro antimicrobial activity of methanolic extracts from cutaneous secretions of Amazonian amphibians against phytopathogens of agricultural interest

RESUMO Os mecanismos de defesa bioquímica dos anfíbios envolvem secreções cutâneas de moléculas bioativas com atividade antimicrobiana. Este estudo avaliou a atividade in vitro de extratos metanólicos da secreção cutânea de duas espécies de anfíbios da família Bufonidae, Rhaebo guttatus e Rhinella marina, no controle dos patógenos Fusarium udum, Fusarium solani, Colletotrichum truncatum, Aspergillus flavus, Rhizoctonia solani, Macrophomina phaseolina e Calonectria pseudometrosideri. O extrato de R. guttatus inibiu o crescimento micelial de F. udum, F. solani, A. flavus e M. phaseolina em algumas concentrações testadas. O extrato de R. marina inibiu o crescimento micelial de C. truncatum na concentração de 0,5 mg mL-¹, e inibiu o crescimento micelial de A. flavus nas concentrações de 0,1 e 0,5 mg mL-¹, que foi semelhante à inibição pelo controle positivo. O extrato de R. marina também diminuiu a produção de microescleródios de R. solani nas concentrações de 0,2 e 0,3 mg mL-¹. Além disso, os extratos inibiram a esporulação e germinação de conídios em graus variados. A inibição da formação de apressórios em C. truncatum pelos extratos de R. guttatus e R. marina foi de 85%-99% e 63%-100%, respectivamente. Nossos resultados demonstraram que o tratamento com extratos da secreção cutânea de R. guttatus e R. marina apresentou atividade antifúngica sobre os fitopatógenos estudados.
ABSTRACT The biochemical defense mechanisms of amphibians involve cutaneous secretions of bioactive molecules with antimicrobial activity. This study evaluated the in vitro activity of methanolic extracts from cutaneous secretions of two amphibian species of the Bufonidae family, Rhaebo guttatus and Rhinella marina, in the control of the phytopathogens Fusarium udum, Fusarium solani, Colletotrichum truncatum, Aspergillus flavus, Rhizoctonia solani, Macrophomina phaseolina, and Calonectria pseudometrosideri. The R. guttatus extract decreased the mycelial growth of F. udum, F. solani, A. flavus, and M. phaseolina at some tested concentrations. The R. marina extract decreased the mycelial growth of C. truncatum at the concentration of 0.5 mg mL-¹, and inhibited the mycelial growth of A. flavus at concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5 mg mL-¹, which was similar to the inhibition by the positive control. The R. marina extract also decreased the microsclerotia production by R. solani at concentrations of 0.2 and 0.3 mg mL-¹. In addition, the extracts inhibited conidial sporulation and germination at varying degrees. The inhibition of appressoria formation in C. truncatum by the R. guttatus and R. marina extracts was 85-99% and 63-100%, respectively. Our results demonstrated that treatment with extracts from R. guttatus and R. marina cutaneous secretions showed antifungal activity against the studied phytopathogens.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

Spatial and temporal distribution of gerrid (Heteroptera) and predation on microcrustaceans from a tropical shallow lake

Resumo Foram investigadas as interações predador-presa, envolvendo inseto aquático e presas zooplanctônicas de diferentes tamanhos para quantificar a mortalidade das presas expostas a predadores. Experimentos de laboratório foram realizados com jovens e adultos do gerrídeo Rheumatobates crassifemur para testar a predação e a seletividade por tamanho das espécies de cladóceros Daphnia gessneri, Ceriodaphnia richardi e Bosmina tubicen. Flutuações populacionais e a distribuição espacial do gerrídeo também foram avaliadas em um lago brasileiro pequeno e raso durante 12 meses em amostras quinzenais. Os insetos foram mais abundantes no litoral (densidade média 7,0 ± 1,2 ind.m–2) em comparação com a zona limnética. Maiores densidades ocorreram de fim de janeiro a junho, em ambas as zonas. A predação dos jovens foi significativa sobre Daphnia e Ceriodaphnia (taxa de ingestão média 1,3 ± 0,1 D. gessneri and 0,7 ± 0,1 C. richardi por predador por hora). Adultos predaram somente a presa maior (taxa de ingestão média 1,0 ± 0,1 D. gessneri por predador por hora). Gerrídeos jovens têm um maior potencial para predar cladóceros que os adultos, e seletividade por tamanho ocorreu para ambos. A preferência dos adultos somente pela presa maior provavelmente está relacionada à dificuldade em manipular pequenas presas planctônicas como Ceriodaphnia. Devido às maiores densidades de insetos no litoral, é esperada maior predação sobre o zooplâncton nesta zona. Este estudo contribui para uma melhor compreensão sobre interações tróficas em lagos tropicais rasos e é o primeiro a investigar a predação de um gerrídeo sobre cladóceros em experimentos de laboratório.
Abstract Predator-prey interactions involving an aquatic insect and zooplanktonic prey of different sizes were investigated to quantify prey mortality exposed to predators. Laboratory experiments were undertaken with the young and adult gerrid Rheumatobates crassifemur to test predation and size selectivity on the cladocerans Daphnia gessneri, Ceriodaphnia richardi, and Bosmina tubicen. Population fluctuations and spatial distribution of the gerrid were also evaluated in a small and shallow Brazilian lake throughout 12 months in fortnightly samples. The insects were more abundant in the littoral (mean density 7.0 ± 1.2 ind.m–2) compared to the limnetic zone. The period with the highest densities was late January to June, in both zones. Predation by young instars on Daphnia and Ceriodaphnia was significant (mean ingestion rate of 1.3 ± 0.1 D. gessneri and 0.7 ± 0.1 C. richardi per predator per hour). Adult insect fed only the large-sized prey (mean ingestion rate of 1.0 ± 0.1 D. gessneri per predator per hour). Young gerrids have greater potential to prey on cladocerans than adults, and size selectivity occurred for both predators. Preference of adults by the larger prey is probably related to difficulties in manipulating smaller planktonic prey, such as Ceriodaphnia. Due to higher densities of insects in the littoral, higher predation on zooplankton in this zone is expected. This study does contribute to a better understanding of trophic interactions in tropical shallow lakes and is the first to investigate predation of a gerrid on cladocerans in laboratory experiments.

Resumo Notonectídeos são amplamente distribuídos em águas continentais e podem predar zooplâncton em lagos temperados. Porém, seu papel na estruturação de comunidades zooplanctônicas é desconhecido em lagos tropicais. Então, nosso objetivo foi estudar o notonectídeo Martarega uruguayensis em um lago tropical raso brasileiro para avaliar seu potencial como predador do zooplâncton. Sua distribuição horizontal foi analisada no lago durante um ano em coletas quinzenais. Os notonectídeos foram mais abundantes (densidade média 162,9 ± 25,8 ind.m–2) na estação fria-seca, com nítida preferência pela zona litorânea (densidade média 139,9 ± 17,5 ind.m–2). Foram feitos experimentos de laboratório com jovens e adultos de notonectídeo e as duas espécies de cladóceros mais abundantes, Daphnia gessneri and Ceriodaphnia richardi, como presas. No laboratório, somente os jovens predaram os microcrustáceos (taxa média de ingestão 1,2 ± 0,2 Daphnia e 1,0 ± 0,2 Ceriodaphnia por predador por hora), sem haver seletividade. Os insetos adultos provavelmente têm dificuldade em detectar e manipular pequenos organismos planctônicos. Por outro lado, os estádios jovens podem influenciar a comunidade zooplanctônica, especialmente na zona litorânea do lago. Esse estudo contribui para uma melhor compreensão sobre interações tróficas em lagos tropicais rasos e é o primeiro a investigar a predação de um notonectídeo sobre microcrustáceos do Lago Monte Alegre.
Abstract Notonectids are widely distributed in freshwaters and can prey on zooplankton in temperate lakes. However, its role in structuring the zooplankton community is unknown in tropical lakes. Thus, our objective was to study the notonectid Martarega uruguayensis in a Brazilian tropical shallow lake to evaluate its potential as a zooplankton predator. Its horizontal distribution was analized in the lake throughout one year in fortnightly samplings. Backswimmers were more abundant (mean density 162.9 ± 25.8 ind.m–2) in the cool-dry season, with a strong preference by the littoral zone (mean density 139.9 ± 17.5 ind.m–2). Laboratory experiments were undertaken with young and adult notonectid and the two most abundant cladocerans, Daphnia gessneri and Ceriodaphnia richardi, as prey. Predation by backswimmers in the laboratory showed that only juveniles fed on microcrustaceans (mean ingestion rate of 1.2 ± 0.2 Daphnia and 1.0 ± 0.2 Ceriodaphnia per predator per hour), without size selectivity. Adult insects probably have difficulties in detecting and manipulating small planktonic organisms. On the other hand, young instars might influence zooplankton community, especially in the littoral zone of the lake. This study does contribute to a better understanding of trophic interactions in tropical shallow lakes and is the first to investigate the predation of a notonectid on microcrustaceans from Lake Monte Alegre.

RESUMO A fauna de anfíbios do estado de Mato Grosso do Sul foi compilada e elaborada pela primeira vez, totalizando 97 espécies, o que representa pouco mais de 10% das espécies que ocorrem no Brasil. Nove famílias e 25 gêneros de Anura e apenas uma espécie de Gymnophiona foram registradas. As áreas de Cerrado apresentaram a maior riqueza, seguidas pelas florestas estacionais semideciduais, Chaco e veredas. Em relação às macrorregiões consideradas, foram registradas 56 espécies para a planície de inundação (majoritariamente representada pelo Pantanal) e 92 para o planalto. As regiões mais amostradas em Mato Grosso do Sul são o Parque Nacional da Serra da Bodoquena e algumas áreas do Pantanal, o que resulta em lacunas de amostragens por todo o estado, principalmente nas regiões norte, leste/sudeste e parte do oeste/sudoeste. Foram identificadas áreas consideradas importantes para amostragens em decorrência da complexidade de fitofisionomias e relevos encontrados no estado: Maciço do rio Apa, Serra de Maracaju, grande parte do Chaco brasileiro, leque do rio Taquari, planalto do Taquari-Itiquira, escarpas do planalto Central, áreas úmidas/florestas estacionais da planície do rio Paraná e áreas interioranas do Pantanal, onde o acesso é difícil.
ABSTRACT Amphibian species from Mato Grosso do Sul state were compiled and checked for the first time. A total of 97 species were recorded, representing more than 10% of the known Brazilian amphibians. Twenty five anuran genera in nine families and only one caecilian were recorded. Cerrado was the richest area followed by semideciduous forests, Chaco, and veredas (palm swamps). It was recorded 56 species in floodplain areas and 92 in the surrounding cerrados. The Serra da Bodoquena National Park and some Pantanal areas were better sampled than other regions in Mato Grosso do Sul, resulting in sampling gaps across the state. Important areas for future inventories were identified: mountainous regions in Serra de Maracaju and those bordering the Apa river, Brazilian chacoan areas, the Taquari river alluvial fan, the broad Taquari-Itiquira flat area, the Central Plateau scarps, wet areas from Parana river bordering São Paulo state, and inland areas from Pantanal.

Resistance training and hormone replacement increase MMP-2 activity, quality and quantity of bone in ovariectomized rats

Abstract AIMS The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of resistance training (RT) and hormone replacement (HR) on MMP-2 activity, biomechanical and physical properties bone of ovariectomized (OVX) rats. METHODS Sprague-Dawley female rats were grouped into six experimental groups (n = 11 per group): sham-operated sedentary (SHAM Sed), ovariectomized sedentary (OVX Sed), sham-operated resistance training (SHAM RT), ovariectomized resistance training (OVX RT), ovariectomized sedentary hormone replacement (OVX Sed-HR), and ovariectomized resistance training hormone replacement (OVX RT-HR). HR groups received implanted silastic capsules with a 5% solution of 17β-estradiol (50 mg 17β-estradiol/ml of sunflower oil). In a 12-week RT period (27 sessions; 4-9 climbs) the animals climbed a 1.1 m vertical ladder with weights attached to their tails. Biomechanical and physical bone analyses were performed using a universal testing machine, and MMP-2 activity analysis was done by zymography. RESULTS Bone density and bone mineral content was higher in the RT and HR groups. The MMP-2 activity was higher in the RT and HR groups. The biomechanical analysis (stiffness, fracture load and maximum load) demonstrated better bone tissue quality in the RT associated with HR. CONCLUSION The RT alone as well as when it is associated with HR was efficient in increasing MMP-2 activity, biomechanical and biophysical properties bone of ovariectomized rats.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Variations in the phenotypic expression of heterozygous beta thalassemia reflect the formation of different populations. To better understand the profile of heterozygous beta-thalassemia of the Brazilian population, we aimed at establishing parameters to direct the diagnosis of carriers and calculate the frequency from information stored in an electronic database. Using a Data Mining tool, we evaluated information on 10,960 blood samples deposited in a relational database. Over the years, improved diagnostic technology has facilitated the elucidation of suspected beta thalassemia heterozygote cases with an average frequency of 3.5% of referred cases. We also found that the Brazilian beta thalassemia trait has classic increases of Hb A2 and Hb F (60%), mainly caused by mutations in beta zero thalassemia, especially in the southeast of the country.
