ABSTRACT Uneven maturation in canola is an important challenge for its management in regions subject to frost and high rainfall at the end of the cycle. In order to identify practices to maximize grain yield under these growing conditions, this work evaluated the effects of desiccation with herbicides at different phenological stages on Hyola 433, one of the most commonly used hybrids in Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four repetitions in a 6 x 4 factorial scheme, with five herbicides: paraquat, diquat and ammonium glufosinate at dose of 400 g a.i. ha-1, glyphosate at 1,440 g a.i. ha-1 and saflufenacil at 70 g a.i. ha-1, plus the control, at four phenological stages of silique maturation (G2, G3, G4 and G5). Desiccation at G2 and G3 reduced the oil content and thousand-grain weight on average by 60%, affecting directly grain yield. Desiccation at G4, regardless of herbicide, did not influence thousand-grain weight and oil content, but the use of diquat reduced canola yield by 187 kg ha-1. In the desiccation at G5, none of the herbicides led to differences compared to the control for thousand-grain weight, yield and oil content, and it allowed harvest to be brought forward by five days. In general, the crop presents adequate responses to the desiccation with different herbicides at the phenological stages G4 and G5.

ABSTRACT Prolactinomas are the most common pituitary adenomas (approximately 40% of cases), and they represent an important cause of hypogonadism and infertility in both sexes. The magnitude of prolactin (PRL) elevation can be useful in determining the etiology of hyperprolactinemia. Indeed, PRL levels > 250 ng/mL are highly suggestive of the presence of a prolactinoma. In contrast, most patients with stalk dysfunction, drug-induced hyperprolactinemia or systemic diseases present with PRL levels < 100 ng/mL. However, exceptions to these rules are not rare. On the other hand, among patients with macroprolactinomas (MACs), artificially low PRL levels may result from the so-called “hook effect”. Patients harboring cystic MACs may also present with a mild PRL elevation. The screening for macroprolactin is mostly indicated for asymptomatic patients and those with apparent idiopathic hyperprolactinemia. Dopamine agonists (DAs) are the treatment of choice for prolactinomas, particularly cabergoline, which is more effective and better tolerated than bromocriptine. After 2 years of successful treatment, DA withdrawal should be considered in all cases of microprolactinomas and in selected cases of MACs. In this publication, the goal of the Neuroendocrinology Department of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM) is to provide a review of the diagnosis and treatment of hyperprolactinemia and prolactinomas, emphasizing controversial issues regarding these topics. This review is based on data published in the literature and the authors' experience.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic variables due to the effects of different levels of defoliation in the phenological phases of two soybean cultivars. The experiment was conducted during the 2011/2012 season, in a randomized block design with three replicates, in a 2 x 4 x 5 factorial scheme. Two cultivars were exposed to defoliations of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% at the stages of V4, V9, R3 and R5. The cultivar 'NK 7059RR' showed less sensitivity to defoliation than the cultivar 'IN 4990RG'. 25% defoliation levels reduced the yield of the cultivar 'IN 4990RG', while levels of 75 and 100% reduce the number of grains per pod in both cultivars. The defoliation performed in the V4 stage lead to lower grain yield than defoliation in V9. The most sensitive stages to defoliation are R3 and R5, where there is a greater reduction in the production potential of soybeans.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different sowing dates on plant population, yield and oil content of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) crop in 2012. A completely randomized block design in a split-plot 2 x 7 was used with seven sowing dates: 24/03/12, 07/04/12, 21/04/12, 05/05/12, 19 / 05/12, 02/06/12 and 16/06/12 and two hybrids: Hyola 61 and Hyola 433. The yield and oil content were similar among treatments, on average 1058 kg ha-1 and 38.2%, respectively. The advancement in sowing times reduced productivity and oil content. To obtain higher grain yields, with higher oil content in the grain, it is recommended to sow hybrids Hyola 61 and Hyola 433 until 20/04, especially if there is expectation of low rainfall during the winter period.

This study aimed to evaluate the agronomic performance of six peanut cultivars in conventional and no-tillage systems in the municipality of Marechal Cândido Rondon and Tupãssi, PR, in the 2011/2012 harvest. The experimental design was in randomized block with four replications in a split plot. Plots were used in two systems of soil management, the conventional and no-tillage system and six peanut cultivars of contrasting growth habit, one of erect and five prostrate, in the subplots. There was no difference between the systems of conservation and conventional tillage on the yield of beans and grains, the number of reproductive structures and in the index grain yield in two evaluated locations. The highest yields were obtained for the Virginia type cultivars independently of the system of soil management, being IAC 503, IAC Caiapó, IAC 213, Runner IAC 886 and Cavalo respectively in Marechal Cândido Rondon. In the municipality of Tupãssi, grain yield varied only between types of materials branch, and the highest values observed for alternating branching cultivars (Virginia).

This study aimed to evaluate the weed population and its critical period of competition with physic nut plants eight months after transplanting. The experiment was established in a randomized block design in a factorial scheme composed by three provenances and five periods of coexistence and of weed control (0, 90, 180, 270, and 360 days) with three replications. The importance value index was quantified to characterize the weed population. The critical period was determined by PAI (period before interference), PTPI (total period of interference) and CPIC (critical period of weed control) according to the variables: stem diameter, crown diameter, number of branches and plant height. Maximum admitted losses were 5 and 10% of each measured variable. Weed species in decreasing order of importance were Sorghum halepense L. Pers., Commelina virginica L., Sida rhombifolia L., Brachiaria plantaginea (Link) Hitch, Euphorbia heterophylla L., Cenchrus echinatus L. and Boerhavia diffusa L. Physic nut plants are subject to reduction of their morphometric measures of stem diameter, crown diameter, number of branches and plant height by weed interference.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of sugarcane as a function of the no-tillage system (NTS) compared to the conventional one (CS) with, and without, manuring. The experimental design was completely randomized, using four repetitions, in a factorial scheme 4 x 2. The treatments were: sugarcane NTS on sunnhemp (Crotalaria juncea); sugarcane NTS on jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis); sugarcane NTS on black mucuna (Mucuna aterrima) and sugarcane CS with incorporation of spontaneous vegetation (control), being duplicated, since each one was with, and without, manuring. In nutritional terms, the sugarcane CS on leguminosae was 43% superior in content of K, and the prominence was jack bean and mucuna that on average provided 26% more foliar N in relation to sugarcane CS. The nutritional diagnosis also indicated N and K as the main limitants of the productivity of sugarcane CS, while Ca, Fe, Zn and Cu were independent limitants of the management system. K was the main nutrient limitant of the productivity of unfertilized sugarcane. Sugarcane NTS on leguminosae provides larger foliar contents of N and K, besides increasing in 27, 32 and 37%, respectively, the number, the diameter and the productivity of stems in relation to the sugarcane of CS. The sugarcane in NTS on leguminosae, besides being more productive, guarantees larger preservation of the environment due to the harvesting of the cane without prior burning.

This research evaluated the performance of automated groups using slippage, tractor speed, and operational viability of planting sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) in no-tillage (SPD) and conventional (PC) systems under different plant coverings. The experimental design was completely randomized, using three repetitions in a split-split plot. There were twenty four treatments: A1-SPD the sugarcane on sunnhemp (Crotalaria juncea); a²-SPD the sugarcane on the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis); A3-PC the sugarcane on incorporated black mucuna (Stilozobium aterrimum); A4-PC the sugarcane (control); sub-plots: B1-FORD 8430 DT + two row crop planter; B2-FORD 8430 DT + three lines furrow opener; B3-FORD 5610 + two lines furrow opener; and, sub-sub-plots: C1 - first reduced gear, and C2 - second reduced gear. The research verified that the slippage and speed results for furrow opening operations for subsequent manual or sugarcane planting operations in direct planting system on plant covering without previous management with cutter or roll-knife were possible and equally efficient when compared to the operational costs due to a reduction in the direct planting of sugarcane.
