Abstract Lychnophorinae comprises 19 genera and 117 species. Its representatives are found mostly in the rocky grasslands (“campos rupestres”) of Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Goiás States, Brazil. This study presents a palynological investigation of 10 species belonging to the genus Piptolepis, endemic to the rocky grasslands of the Espinhaço Mountains, in Minas Gerais State. The plant material used in this investigation was obtained from specimens deposited in Brazilian herbaria. Pollen grains were processed by the acetolysis method, measured, described, and photomicrographed in light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Morphological observations revealed Piptolepis pollen to be large, prolate spheroidal in most species, 3-colporate, ectoapertures long, sexine subechinolophate or sublophate. Endoapertures vary from almost circular, lalongate or lalongate, with a median constriction observed only in three species. Three types of spines were identified: prostrate and disorganized, elongated and narrow, and conical, erect, apex acute in the other species. This first palynological study of Piptolepis species allowed the separation of representatives of the genus using pollen keys. The most significant characters were pollen shape, ornamentation, endoaperture, and presence of median constriction in the endoaperture. The findings presented here do not support the infrageneric classification of Piptolepis, as pollen characters were not unique to any section.

ABSTRACT Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an opportunistic disease in immunosuppressed individuals, who may present severe clinical conditions, such as the ones described in this patient. She lived in an endemic region for VL, and was possibly infected with L. (L.) infantum chagasi through the bite of a contaminated sand fly. This initial infection has triggered a pemphigus vulgaris condition by immunogenic proteins present in the mosquito's saliva. The immunosuppression caused by the use of high doses of corticosteroids to control the disease promoted a severe VL condition, with hepatosplenomegaly, thrombocytopenia and hemorrhages, requiring hospitalization and the onset of a subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection. Due to the intensity of clinical manifestations related to VL, aggravated by COVID-19, she died two days after admission to the Clinical Hospital of Marilia Medical School (HC–Famema).

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

BACKGROUND: Patent foramen ovale is observed in 27% to 30% of the population and may be associated to embolic events, among them the cryptogenic stroke. The PREMERE TM device, specially developed to correct patent foramen ovale, has a low profile, reduced amount of metal and a left anchor with a small total surface to minimize the risk of thrombus formation. Clinical and echocardiographic results were evaluated immediately after the procedure and 3 and 6 months after device implantation. METHOD: From May 2008 to June 2009, the device was implanted in 14 patients with patent foramen ovale with prior cerebral embolic events, confirmed by computerized tomography and/or cranial magnetic resonance imaging. Echocardiographic patent foramen ovale was diagnosed when microbubbles were detected in the left atrium within three heartbeats after opacification of the right atrium. Patients with patent foramen ovale with interatrial septal aneurysm > 2 cm, those with atrial fibrilation/flutter or with other diseases that might explain the cryptogenic stroke were excluded. RESULTS: Nine (64.3%) patients were male and mean age was 47.2 ± 17.5 years. Successful implantation was achieved in 100% of the cases. Transesophageal echocardiogram immediately after the procedure showed the presence of microbubbles in the left atrium with Valsalva maneuver in 50% of the cases. All of the patients were discharged the following day, receiving acetyl salicylic acid 200 mg/day and clopidogrel 75 mg/day and returned after 3 months for clinical and echocardiographic follow-up. The transesophageal echocardiogram at three months showed a mild residual flow in only 3 (21.4%) patients. These patients had a totally occluded patent foramen ovale at the 6-month follow-up transesophageal echocardiogram. None of the patients had cardiovascular events during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: The PREMERE TM device proved to be safe and effective in the occlusion of patent foramen ovale. The occlusion rate in this initial experience was high for a follow-up period of 6 months.

Ageratum fastigiatum (Gardn.) O caule possui epiderme uniestratificada, estômatos, tricomas tectores simples e tricomas glandulares capitados. O pecíolo exibe contorno côncavo-convexo e a epiderme é unisseriada. A lâmina foliar é anfiestomática e o mesófilo dorsiventral.
Ageratum fastigiatum (Gardn.) R. M. King et H. Rob. (Asteraceae), known as "matapasto", is a plant used in the popular medicine as cicatrizant and antimicrobial. The aim of this work was to perform a morpho-anatomical characterization of the leaves, the stems and the roots from A. fastigiatum. Transversal and paradermic sections, stained with astra safranin/blue and toluidine blue were analyzed under a microscope. The leaves are alternate or fasciculate; the inflorescence is constituted of chapters; the flowers with lilac corolla; papus is absence. The root presents secondary growth in the ramification area with secretor structures. The stem possesses epidermis unistratified, stomata, simple non-glandular trichomes and capitates glandular trichomes. The petiole exhibits concave-convex outline and the epidermis is uniseriate. The blade leaf is hypostomatic; the mesophyll is dorsiventral. The epidermis possesses cells of sinuous outline and the stomata of the anomocytic type. The morpho-anatomical characters allowed establishing parameters for identification of A. fastigiatum.
