ABSTRACT Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is essential to the economic viability of the soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] crop in Brazil, but drought may impair the BNF processes. We evaluated physiological traits of nitrogen fixation drought-tolerant (NFDT) (R01-581F, R01-416F and R02-1325) and drought-susceptible (CD 215 and BRS 317) genotypes of soybean subjected to drought or regular water supply between 45 and 55 days after emergence, in an experiment under greenhouse conditions in pots containing non-sterile soil. R01-581F had more stable photosynthetic and transpiration rates, and higher intercellular CO2 levels under drought. Drought reduced the chlorophyll concentration in all genotypes, but with less intensity in R01-581F and R02-1325. The NFDT genotypes generally showed higher concentrations of N, K and Mn in shoots, irrespective of the water condition. Exposure to drought increased total soluble sugars in nodules in all genotypes, as well as the concentrations of ureides in leaves and nodules, whereas ureides in petioles increased only in the susceptible genotypes. Drought negatively affected photosynthetic and BNF attributes; however, R01-581F showed the best performance, with potential for use in breeding programs aiming at drought-tolerant varieties.

O uso sustentável do solo, mantendo ou aumentando sua qualidade, é um dos objetivos da diversificação na propriedade agrícola. Nesse aspecto, bioindicadores relacionados à ciclagem de C, N e P podem ser utilizados na avaliação do tipo de uso na qualidade do solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar atributos químicos, microbiológicos e bioquímicos do solo, associados ao C, N e P, sob diferentes tipos de uso em uma propriedade agrícola com atividade diversificada no norte do Paraná. Foram avaliados sete tipos de uso do solo: fragmento nativo de Floresta Atlântica; cultivo de pupunha (Bactrys gasipaes); soqueira de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum officinarum) recém colhida, em reforma; cultivo de café (Coffea arabica) intercalado com espécies arbóreas; reflorestamento recente (1 ano) com espécies arbóreas nativas, em área anteriormente ocupada com culturas anuais; cultivos anuais em sistema de plantio direto na palha, centeio (Cecale cereale); e mata secundária, regenerada por abandono (há 20 anos) de área cultivada com abacate (Persea americana). Os solos das áreas sob cultivo de café, reflorestamento recente e mata secundária tiveram os maiores valores de carbono orgânico, mas a biomassa microbiana e atividades enzimáticas foram maiores nos solos sob mata nativa e mata secundária, que também apresentaram menor coeficiente metabólico, seguidos pela área de pupunha. O menor teor de argila dispersa em água foi encontrado no solo sob mata nativa, que diferiu das áreas de cana e de mata secundária. A cobertura vegetal e o uso do solo influenciaram no teor de C orgânico total e nas atividades microbiana e enzimática do solo; as áreas agrícolas com maior intensidade de uso do solo se evidenciaram mais impactantes aos indicadores avaliados. O cálculo de um índice médio de qualidade do solo indicou que a mata secundária mais se aproximou do fragmento de mata nativa, seguidos pelo cultivo de pupunha, cultivo de café, culturas anuais, reflorestamento recente e soqueira de cana.

Sustainable use of soil, maintaining or improving its quality, is one of the goals of diversification in farmlands. From this point of view, bioindicators associated with C, N and P cycling can be used in assessments of land-use effects on soil quality. The aim of this study was to investigate chemical, microbiological and biochemical properties of soil associated with C, N and P under different land uses in a farm property with diversified activity in northern Parana, Brazil. Seven areas under different land uses were assessed: fragment of native Atlantic Forest; growing of peach-palm (Bactrys gasipaes); sugarcane ratoon (Saccharum officinarum) recently harvested, under renewal; growing of coffee (Coffea arabica) intercropped with tree species; recent reforestation (1 year) with native tree species, previously under annual crops; annual crops under no-tillage, rye (Cecale cereale); secondary forest, regenerated after abandonment (for 20 years) of an avocado (Persea americana) orchard. The soil under coffee, recent reforestation and secondary forest showed higher concentrations of organic carbon, but microbial biomass and enzyme activities were higher in soils under native forest and secondary forest, which also showed the lowest metabolic coefficient, followed by the peach-palm area. The lowest content of water-dispersible clay was found in the soil under native forest, differing from soils under sugarcane and secondary forest. Soil cover and soil use affected total organic C contents and soil enzyme and microbial activities, such that more intensive agricultural uses had deeper impacts on the indicators assessed. Calculation of the mean soil quality index showed that the secondary forest was closest to the fragment of native forest, followed by the peach-palm area, coffee-growing area, annual crop area, the area of recent reforestation and the sugarcane ratoon area.

Avaliaram-se os efeitos de diferentes culturas de inverno sobre indicadores de qualidade associados aos ciclos do C e do N e frações de C em um Nitossolo Vermelho eutroférrico, sob plantio direto em implantação, em dois anos agrícolas, em Londrina PR. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com parcelas subdivididas no tempo, com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram constituídas pelas culturas de inverno: consórcio de aveia preta (Avena strigosa), ervilhaca peluda (Vicia villosa) e nabo forrageiro (Raphanus sativus); girassol (Helianthus annuus) consorciado com braquiária (Urochloa ruziziensis); milho (Zea mays) consorciado com braquiária; e as culturas solteiras de milho; nabo forrageiro; ou trigo (Triticum aestivum). As subparcelas foram os anos de avaliação: 2008 e 2009. Determinaram-se os teores de C total, C lábil e resistente, o N total, o C e o N da biomassa microbiana, a relação C/N da matéria orgânica do solo, e o quociente microbiano do solo (qMic), além de atributos microbiológicos e bioquímicos apenas no segundo ano. Os atributos foram significativamente alterados pelas culturas de inverno, sobretudo o consórcio de plantas de cobertura e nabo forrageiro, e pelas épocas de avaliação. Apesar de estimular a atividade microbiológica/bioquímica do solo, o cultivo de nabo diminuiu o teor de C do solo no segundo ano, similarmente ao cultivo de trigo. A combinação de espécies de plantas de cobertura de inverno é uma alternativa de manejo no estabelecimento do sistema de plantio direto, contribuindo para o aumento dos teores de C e estimular a atividade microbiológica/bioquímica do solo.

We assessed the effect of different winter crops on indicators of soil quality related to C and N cycling and C fractions in a Rhodic Kandiudult under no-till system at implantation, during two growing seasons, in Londrina PR Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks with split-plot in time arrangement, with four replications. The parcels were the winter crops: multicropping of cover crops with black oat (Avena strigosa), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) and fodder radish (Raphanus sativus); sunflower (Heliantus annuus) intercropped with Urochloa ruziziensis; corn (Zea mays) intercropped with Urochloa; and corn; fodder radish; or wheat (Triticum aestivum) as sole crops. The subplots were the years: 2008 and 2009. Determinations consisted of total organic C, labile and resistant C, total N, microbial biomass C and N, the C/N ratio of soil organic matter, and the microbial quotient (qMic), besides microbiological and biochemical attributes, assessed only in 2009. The attributes significantly changed with the winter crops, especially the multicropping of cover crops and fodder radish, as well as effect of years. Despite stimulating the microbiological/biochemical activity, fodder radish cropping decreased the soil C in the second year, likewise the wheat cropping. The multicropping of cover crops in winter is an option for management in the establishment of no-till system, which contributes to increase the concentrations of C and stimulate the soil microbiological/biochemical activity.

O caruncho-do-feijão Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) é uma importante praga de grãos de feijão armazenado nas regiões tropicais. A eficiência do caulim [com ou sem óleo de nim (Azadirachta indica)] e terra diatomácea (TD) (tratamento padrão) foi estudada em laboratório com o intuito de obter alternativas para o controle químico deste inseto. Insetos foram confinados em frascos de plástico com feijão tratado com caulim (2, 4 e 8g kg-1), caulim + nim [2g kg-1(5% óleo de nim)], terra diatomácea (1g kg-1) e controle. Mortalidade de insetos adultos, número de ovos e emergência da geração F1 foram avaliados. Caulim causou a mortalidade de Z. subfasciatus, porém foram necessários maiores períodos e doses que a TD para promover elevada mortalidade (100% ou aproximadamente). Os tratamentos com caulim também afetaram o comportamento da fêmea, pois muitos ovos foram colocados nas paredes dos frascos. O número de adultos emergidos (F1) foi similar entre a TD e o caulim; portanto, caulim constitui uma ferramenta promissora para o manejo de Z. subfasciatus. A mistura de caulim e óleo de nim não foi eficiente no controle de Z. subfasciatus.

The Mexican bean weevil Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) is an important pest of stored beans in tropical regions. The efficiency of kaolin [with or without neem (Azadirachta indica) oil] and diatomaceous earth (DE) (standard treatment) was studied in laboratory aiming to obtain alternatives for chemical control of this insect. Insects were confined in plastic vials containing beans treated with kaolin (2, 4 and 8g kg-1), kaolin + neem [2g kg-1(5% neem oil)], diatomaceous earth (1g kg-1) and control. Mortality of adult insects, number of eggs and F1generation beetles emergency were assessed. Kaolin caused mortality of Z. subfasciatus, however higher periods and doses than DE were necessary to promote high mortality (100% or close). Kaolin treatments also affected female behavior because many eggs were placed in the vials walls. Number of emerged adults (F1) was similar between DE and kaolin; hence, kaolin constitutes a promising tool to the management of Z. subfasciatus. The mixture of kaolin and neem oil was not efficient in the control of Z. subfasciatus.
