Abstract The consumption of vegetable oils is common in our daily diet. Rapeseed oil (canola oil) is the third most consumed edible oil in the world, followed by palm and soybean oils in terms of production. Rapeseed oil has a low proportion of saturated fatty acids, while it is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, as well as in healthy compounds such as phenols, tocopherols, phytosterols, carotenoids, and fat-soluble vitamins. However, processing technologies affect the content and functional activities of bioactive compounds in the oil. Aim: To assess any potential effect of hot or cold pressing and a refining process on the nutritional value and the profile of several bioactive compounds in canola oils produced in Chile. Methods: Canola oils were characterized regarding their fatty acid profile, phytosterol and tocopherol composition, total phenol content, and antioxidant activity, according to the mode of extraction (cold or hot pressed) and before and after bWeing subjected to a refining process. Results: Fatty acid profiles were not significantly different in any of the analyzed canola oils. Refining but not temperature extraction led to a sharp decrease of phytosterols and tocopherols. Hot pressing significantly increased the amount of total phenols (3.1 times) and the antioxidant activity measured by ORAC (3.1 times) and DPPH (8.3 times) compared to the cold extraction. However, phenolic concentration and antioxidant capacity decreased after refining. Conclusions: Refining processes should be adjusted to reduce the loss of bioactive compounds in the oil.

Resumen El consumo de aceites vegetales es habitual en nuestra dieta diaria. El aceite de colza (aceite de canola) es el tercer aceite comestible más consumido en el mundo, seguido por los aceites de palma y soja en términos de producción. El aceite de colza tiene una baja proporción de ácidos grasos saturados, mientras que es rico en ácidos grasos insaturados, así como en compuestos liposolubles saludables como fenoles, tocoferoles, fitoesteroles, carotenoides y vitaminas. Sin embargo, las tecnologías de procesamiento afectan el contenido y las actividades funcionales de los compuestos bioactivos en el aceite. Objetivo: Evaluar cualquier efecto potencial del prensado en caliente o en frío y un proceso de refinación sobre el valor nutricional y el perfil de varios compuestos bioactivos en los aceites de canola producidos en Chile. Métodos: Los aceites de canola se caracterizaron en cuanto a su perfil de ácidos grasos, composición de fitoesteroles y tocoferoles, contenido de fenoles totales y actividad antioxidante, según el modo de extracción (prensado en frío o en caliente) y antes y después de ser sometidos a un proceso de refinación. Resultados: Los perfiles de ácidos grasos no fueron significativamente diferentes en ninguno de los aceites de canola analizados. La refinación, pero no la extracción en caliente, condujo a una fuerte disminución de los fitoesteroles y tocoferoles. El prensado en caliente aumentó significativamente la cantidad de fenoles totales (3,1 veces) y la actividad antioxidante medida por ORAC (3,1 veces) y DPPH (8,3 veces) en comparación con la extracción en frío. Sin embargo, la concentración de fenoles y la capacidad antioxidante disminuyeron después del refinado. Conclusión: Los procesos de refinación deben ajustarse para reducir la pérdida de compuestos bioactivos en el aceite.

Abstract Introduction Studies suggest that diaphragm thickness (DT) is associated with inspiratory muscle strength and consequently, better ventilatory and mechanical efficiency. On the other hand, infectious diseases such as COVID-19 may impact the structure and function of the respiratory system. Objective Assess the association between DT and the physical performance (PP) of athletes and the effects of COVID-19 infection on these parameters. Methods This is a cross-sectional study of 63 athletes of both sexes from different sport modalities (women: 16.67 ± 5.03 years, 52.09 ± 14.01 kg, 155.90 ± 13.86 cm; men: 23.44 ± 9.65 years, 72.24 ± 14.18 kg, 174.84 ± 6.84 cm), submitted to DT assessment using ultrasound, followed by the PP(Yo-Yo) test) to determine maximum oxygen intake (VO2max). Pearson’s correlation was used to determine the association between VO2max and DT, and the Student’s t-test for differences between athletes with a positive and negative diagnosis for COVID-19. The significance level was set at 5%. Results There was no association between DT and PP (r = 0.30 and p = 0.22) or between athletes unaffected and affected by COVID-19 in relation to DT (57.00 ± 0.26 vs 52.00 ± 0.25%; p = 0.91) and PP (43.88 ± 2.29 vs 38.34 ± 13.61 ml/kg/min; p = 0.69). Conclusion DT was not associated with maximum oxygen intake in athletes. In addition, athletes infected by COVID-19 exhibited no differences in VO2max or DT when compared to nonaffected individuals.

Resumo Introdução Estudos sugerem que a espessura diafrag-mática (ED) está associada à força muscular inspiratória e, consequentemente, à melhor eficiência ventilatória e mecânica. Por outro lado, doenças infecciosas como a COVID-19 podem impactar a estrutura e função do apa-relho respiratório. Objetivo Avaliar a associação entre a ED e o desempenho físico (DF) de atletas e os efeitos da infecção por COVID-19 sobre esses parâmetros. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo transversal envolvendo 63 atletas de diferentes modalidades esportivas, de ambos os sexos (feminino: 16,67 ± 5,03 anos, 52,09 ± 14,01 kg, 155,90 ± 13,86 cm; masculino 23,44 ± 9,65 anos, 72,24 ± 14,18 kg, 174,84 ± 6,84 cm), que foram submetidos à avaliação da ED por meio de ultrassom e, em seguida, ao teste de DF (Yo-Yo test) para determinar o consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max). Utilizou-se a correlação de Pearson para verificar a associação entre VO2max e ED, e o teste t de Student para diferenças entre atletas com diagnóstico positivo e negativo para COVID-19. O nível de significância foi ajustado em 5%. Resultados Não houve associação entre ED e DF (r = 0,30 e p = 0,22) e não houve diferença entre os atletas não infectados e infectados por COVID-19 em relação à ED (57,00 ± 0,26 vs 52,00 ± 0,25%; p = 0,91) e DF (43,88 ± 2,29 vs 38,34 ± 13,61 ml/kg/min; p = 0,69). Conclusão A ED não foi associada ao consumo máximo de oxigênio em atletas. Além disso, atletas infectados por COVID-19 não exibiram diferenças no VO2max e ED em relação aos não infectados.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o potencial da alga marinha verde Ulva fasciata Delile como fonte alternativa de fibra alimentar. Foram realizadas a determinação do teor de fibra alimentar total e a descrição de algumas propriedades físico-químicas, e os efeitos fisiológicos da farinha da alga seca sobre ratos alimentados com dieta hipercolesterolemizante foram investigados. Esta alga pode ser considerada uma fonte alternativa potencial de fibra com cerca de 400 g.kg-1 (base seca) e propriedades físico-químicas interessantes: uma capacidade de retenção de água de 8,74 g/água.g-1 de amostra seca (farinha de alga) e 0,90 (extrato de carboidratos), uma capacidade de adsorção de lipídeos de 4,52 g/óleo.g-1 de amostra seca (farinha de alga) e 5,70 (extrato de carboidratos), uma viscosidade intrínseca de 2,4 dl.g-1 (extrato de carboidrato da alga) e capacidade de troca iônica de 3,51 Eq.kg-1 (extrato de carboidrato). A dieta contendo farinha de alga foi capaz de manter baixos os níveis de colesterol total de ratos sem causar aumento indesejável na fração LDL-C. Nenhuma evidência de componentes tóxicos e/ou antinutricionais na farinha de alga foi encontrada. Os ratos mostraram um volume fecal maior (13 g) do que aqueles alimentados com dieta contendo celulose como fonte de fibra (7 g) (p < 0,05). Essas propriedades conferem a alga o potencial de ser utilizada na tecnologia de alimentos para a aquisição de alimentos de baixas calorias, podendo ser importante para o controle do peso corporal, redução do colesterol sanguíneo total e da fração LDL-C, como também na prevenção de doenças gastrintestinais.

This work aims to assess the potential of the green seaweed Ulva fasciata Delile as an alternative source of dietary fibre (DF). Total DF content was determined, some of its physico-chemical properties described and the physiological effects of U. fasciata meal on rats fed a hypercholesterolemic diet were investigated. U. fasciata may be considered a potential alternative source of DF with a total content of about 400 g.kg-1 (dry basis) and interesting physico-chemical properties: water retention capacity of 8.74 g/water.g-1 dry sample (seaweed meal) and 0.90 (seaweed carbohydrate extract), lipid adsorption capacity of 4.52 g/oil.g-1 dry sample (seaweed meal) and 5.70 (seaweed carbohydrate extract), intrinsic viscosity of 2.4 dl.g-1 (seaweed carbohydrate extract) and cation exchange capacity of 3.51 Eq.kg-1 (seaweed carbohydrate extract). The diet containing seaweed meal was able to keep rats' total cholesterol (TC) down without causing any undesirable increase in LDL-C fraction. No evidence of toxic and/or antinutritional components in the seaweed meal was detected. Rats showed a fecal volume much greater (13 g) than that fed on cellulose diet ( 7 g) (p < 0.05). These properties confer on the seaweed the potential to be used in food technology for the acquisition of low-calorie food and might be important in body weight control, reduction of blood TC and LDL-C as well as in prevention of gastrointestinal diseases.

Neste trabalho, o extrato aquoso das sementes de Moringaoleifera (EASMO) foi avaliado quanto aos seus efeitos biológicos sobre ovos e larvas de Aedes aegypti no 3ºestágio de desenvolvimento e sua toxicidade sobre animais de laboratório(Daphnia magna, camundongos e ratos). O EASMO bruto revelou uma CL50 de 1.260 µg/mL, causando 99, 2 ± 2, 9% de mortalidade em 24 h na concentração de 5.200 µg/mL, embora o mesmo não tenha sido capaz de impedir a eclosão dos ovos. A atividade larvicida extinguiu-se após aquecimento do extrato a 80ºC/10 min. Diálises sucessivas do EASMO bruto resultaram em duas frações solúveis em água (Fração dializável, FD; Fração nãodializável, FND), dentre as quais apenas a FD mostrou ação larvicida. Testes de toxicidade aguda realizadosem dáfnias (CE50 de 188, 7 µg/mL) e camundongos (DL50 de446,5 mg/kg de peso corpóreo) evidenciaram baixa toxicidade. Apesar da hipertrofia tímica, o EASMO mostrou ser atóxicoapós tratamento subagudo via oral em ratos. Conclui-se, portanto, que o EASMO apresenta substâncias com capacida de larvicida contra Ae. aegypti, as quais possuem massa molecular aparente menor que 12 kDa e potencial tóxico moderado.

In this work, biological effects of the water extract of Moringa oleifera seeds (WEMOS) were assessed on eggs and 3rd instar larvae of Aedes aegypti and on its toxicity upon laboratory animals (Daphnia magna, mice and rats). Crude WEMOS showed a LC50 value of 1260µg/mL, causing 99.2 ± 2.9% larvae mortality within 24 h at 5200µg/mL, though this larvicidal activity has been lost completely at 80ºC/10 min. WEMOS did not demonstrate capacity to prevent egg hatching. After extensive dialyses of the crude WEMOS into watersoluble dialyzable (DF) and nondyalizable (NDF) fractions, only DF maintained its efficacy to kill larvae. Acute toxicity evaluations on daphnids (EC50 of 188.7µg/mL) and mice (LD50 of 446.5 mg/kg body weight) pointed out to low toxicity. Despite the thymus hypertrophy, WEMOS revealed to be harmless in orally and subacutelytreated rats. In conclusion, WEMOS has thermostable bioactive compounds against Ae. aegypti larvae with apparent molecular mass lower than 12 kDa and moderately toxic potential.

RACIONAL: O câncer de estômago ocupa o terceiro lugar das neoplasias malignas em todo o mundo e é a segunda causa de morte por câncer. No entanto, sua incidência está em declínio nos últimos anos, principalmente em paises como Estados Unidos, Inglaterra e Austrália, assim como onde a sua incidência sempre foi alta - Japão, China, Coréia e Leste da Ásia -, com estimativa de 780 casos anuais por 100 mil habitantes. OBEJTIVOS: Descrição da expressão citofotométrica dos marcadores Ki-67 e CD34 e comparação entre a expressão deles no adenocarcinoma de estômago. MÉTODOS: Foram selecionados inicialmente 60 blocos com espécime de adenocarcinoma gástrico coletados nos serviços de patologia do Hospital do Gama - Brasília, DF e Hospital Dom Orione - Araguaina,TO. A imunoistoquímica com os marcadores Ki-67 e CD34 foi feita no Laboratório de Citologia e Histopalogia Ltda - CITOLAB, Curitiba, PR. Foram aproveitados do total 35 blocos para o estudo histológico e imunoistoquímico que foram analisados pelo sistema de citometria de imagem computarizado SAMBA 4000 no Instituto de Pesquisas Médicas do Hospital Universitário Evangélico de Curitiba. Foram estudados o índice de marcagem e a densidade óptica para ambos os marcadores analisados separadamente e depois comparados. RESULTADOS: Das 35 lâminas, 15 (42,85%) marcaram o Ki-67; 26 (74,28%) o CD34 e 12 lâminas (34,28%) marcaram com os dois marcadores. Quando se comparou o índice de marcagem entre Ki-67 e CD34, observou-se que existe diferença significativa (P<0,001) a favor do CD34. Quando se comparou a densidade óptica entre ambos, observou-se que existe diferença significativa (P<0,001) a favor do CD34. CONCLUSÕES: A média do índice de marcagem do marcador Ki-67 foi de 36,85%, e a da densidade óptica de 29,33 pixels. O CD34 teve como índice de marcagem 84,86% e 49,84 pixels de média para a densidade óptica. Quando se comparou o índice de marcagem entre ambos, observou-se que existe diferença significativa a favor do CD34. Quando se comparou a densidade óptica entre ambos também observou-se que existe diferença significativa a favor do CD34.

BACKGROUND: Stomach cancer is rated as the third malignant neoplasm in the world, being the second most frequent cause of death. However, its incidence has been declining in the last few years in countries like the United States, England and Australia, and in countries where its incidence has always been high - Japan, China, Korea and in the Eastern part of Asia, which has an estimated 780 cases per year per 100,000 inhabitants. AIM: To describe the cytophotometric expression of Ki-67 and CD-34 with comparison to their expression in stomach adenocarcinomas. METHODS: 60 paraffin blocks containing specimens of gastric adenocarcinomas, were initially selected in the Pathology services of the Gama Hospital - Brasília, DF an at the Dom Orione Hospital - Araguaiana, TO. The immunohistochemistry process using Ki-67 and CD-34 was performed at the Laboratório de Citologia e Histopatologia Ltda. -CITOLAB, Curitiba, PR. A total of 35 paraffin blocks were selected among the other 60 previously selected, being used in histological studies as well as for the immunohistochemistry process. These were analyzed using the computerized image cytophotometric system (SAMBA 4000) at the Institute of Medical Research of the Hospital Universitário Evangélico de Curitiba. The parameters studies and analyzed through this system were the labeling index and optical density for both of the tumoral markers being independently analyzed and latter compared with each other. RESULTS: Of the 35 slides, 15(42,85%) showed the expression of Ki-67; 26 (74,28%) of CD-34 and 12 slides (34,28%) showed the expression of both markers. When the labeling indexes between Ki-67 and CD-34 were compared, a significant difference was observed (P<0,001) favoring CD-34. When the optical density of the two markers was compared, a significant difference (P<0,001) was also observed, favoring CD-34. CONCLUSIONS: The average labeling index for Ki-67 was of 36,85%, where as the optical density was of 29,33 pixels. CD-34 showed a labeling index of 84,86% and an average 49,84 pixels regarding the optical density. When the labeling index and optical density were compared between both of the markers, a significant difference was established favoring CD-34 in both of the parameters analyzed.
