Abstract Purpose This paper aims to study whether Peruvian manufacturing firms that implement innovation have positive performance and whether R&D activities moderate these relationships. Design/methodology/approach Using a data set of Peruvian manufacturing firms from the 2018 National Survey of Innovation, a LOGIT model analysis was applied to 774 companies. In addition, the authors fitted different models into subsamples to explore the moderating effects of R&D on manufacturing firms. Finally, the regression models were computed using R software. Findings The results indicate that product, service and marketing innovation are associated positively with an increase in market share, while process and organizational innovations are associated positively with productivity. Moreover, companies with R&D are more productivity-oriented than companies without R&D. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to the literature on innovation management by supporting the assumption that innovation results in increased productivity and expands market demand. In addition, findings highlight that R&D is essential for boosting firms’ productivity. Practical implications Managers should consider an appropriate combination of the innovation portfolio and R&D investments to make progress and increase performance in the company. In addition, policymakers should consider that investments to promote the development of R&D activities in manufacturing companies will likely lead to médium- or long-term returns. Social implications The correct use of indicators to measure these relationships could help the policymaker to design and measure policy instruments more efficiently. Originality/value These results provide a deeper understanding of how the effects of innovations implemented by manufacturing firms, especially service and process innovation, improve their performance.

Abstract It is described for the first time the synthesis and characterization of NiMn2O4 employing the Mn ores from the Amazon Region as starting material, instead of using commercial reagents as normally occurs in its synthesis process. Initially, an Mn ore was transformed into a single product, the octahedral layer (OL) manganese oxide with Ni2+ ions interlayer (Ni-OL-2), which was used as a matrix to obtain NiMn2O4 by thermal decomposition. The following techniques were used for characterization: X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (TG-DTA), scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies. The results revealed that Mn oxide ore composed of nsutite mineral transformed into a well-ordered crystalline Ni-OL-2 phase, after the hydrothermal and cation exchange process. The thermal decomposition of Ni-OL-2 produced the nickel manganite phase at 850 °C with spherical ball morphology and crystal sizes in the range of 200-300 nm.

Resumen Términos como “parásitos”, “patógenos” o “virus” se utilizan en el campo de la medicina para la identificación de organismos que producen daño sobre otros. Sin embargo, en el campo de la veterinaria y su interacción con la ecología el contexto es diferente: la utilización indiscriminada de estos términos ha producido que muchas veces los mismos se utilicen como sinónimos. Al estudiar la bibliografía disponible sobre apicultura o conservación de abejas nativas, podemos observar que solamente unos pocos y recientes estudios se focalizan en esta necesaria reconceptualización de los términos basada en la ecología. A lo largo de esta revisión buscaremos diferenciar los conceptos de “parásito”, “patógeno” y“virus”, y redefinir los conceptos de “virulencia” y “patogenicidad” bajo un contexto ecológico. Esta revisión, propone demostrar que las interacciones parásito/hospedador pueden expresarse de forma diferencial en función del contexto micro (hospedador) y macro ambiental (ambiente del hospedador). Aunque utilizaremos a las abejas melíferas (Apis mellifera) como modelo, la teoría aquí abordada podría ser extrapolada por el lector a otros sistemas parasitarios.

Abstract Parasitism and bees: a concept revision from an ecological perspective. From the beginning all, parasites, pathogens and viruses are organisms that have a negative connotation in the field of medicine. However, the use of methodologies and terms of medicine in the field of ecology and, above all, veterinary medicine, led to this understanding of "pathogenic" organisms reaching such studies. When we look into the apicultural research bibliography, we find that these concepts sometimes are poorly distinguished and only a few early studies have been focused on bringing light on this conflictive conceptualization. Today we find a large number of scientific articles that misuse these terms and often consider them as synonyms. Throughout this review we will seek to differentiate each of these terms and generate consensus that avoids the confusion of such important ecological concepts.

Resumen Introducción y objetivos: La información sobre la biodiversidad de áreas protegidas es fundamental para desarrollar estrategias de manejo y conservación. En este trabajo evaluamos el número de registros de plantas y vertebrados de Parques Nacionales (PN) de Argentina en función de la riqueza de especies de la provincia donde se encuentra cada PN, analizamos posibles variables explicativas del número de registros en cada PN, y describimos la vegetación registrada en tres PN icónicos del país. M&M: Los registros de plantas vasculares y de vertebrados, las características de cada PN y la riqueza de especies de la provincia donde se encuentra cada PN se obtuvieron de bases de datos de acceso abierto. Para los PN Calilegua, Iguazú y Nahuel Huapi describimos el número de plantas según familia, origen, endemismo, forma de vida, estado de conservación según UICN e invasividad de especies no nativas. Resultados: Los PN presentaron gran variabilidad en sus registros. Encontramos pocos registros de especies no nativas. Los PN más antiguos registraron más plantas no nativas. La lista de plantas del PN Nahuel Huapi mostró un mayor número de registro que Calilegua e Iguazú. El número de plantas categorizadas por UICN fue muy bajo. Casi todas las plantas no nativas registradas estaban categorizadas como invasoras en otros lugares del mundo. Conclusiones: Destacamos la importancia de incrementar el relevamiento de especies en todos los PN, particularmente de plantas y en PN de reciente creación. Se requiere mayor atención a especies no nativas a fin evitar problemas socio-ecológicos asociados a invasiones biológicas.

Summary Background and aims: Biodiversity information of protected areas is essential to develop management and conservation strategies. Here we 1) evalúate the number of records of plant and vertebrate species of National Parks (NP) from Argentina based on the species richness of the province where each NP is located, 2) analyze possible explanatory variables of the number of records in each NP, and 3) describe the vegetation registered in three iconic NPs of the country. M&M: The records of vascular plants and vertebrates, the characteristics of each NP and the species richness of the province where each NP is located were obtained from open access databases. For Calilegua, Iguazú and Nahuel Huapi NPs we describe the number of plants according to family, origin, endemism, life form, IUCN categorization and invasiveness of non-native species. Results: All NPs showed great variability in their records. There were few records of non-native species. Older NPs had more non-native plants records. The list of plants of Nahuel Huapi NP showed more records than Calilegua and Iguazú. The number of plants categorized by IUCN was very low. Almost all recorded non-native plants were invasive elsewhere in the world. Conclusions: We emphasize the importance of increasing the survey of species in all NP, particularly vascular plants and in recently created NPs. Special attention must be given to non-native species in order to avoid socio-ecological problems associated with biological invasions.

ABSTRACT The auditory brainstem response (ABR) by evoked potentials is a widespread auditory pathway assessment technique. This is largely applied due to its cost-effectiveness, practicality and ease of use. In contrast, it requires a trained professional to carry out the analysis of the results. This motivates several research efforts to increase the independence of the diagnostician. To this end, the present work shows the ability of three signal classification tools to differentiate ABR studies of normal hearing subjects from those who may have some pathology. As a starting point, the PhysioNet short term auditory evoked potentials databases are used to calculate the features later applied to construct the dataset. The features used are diverse classes of permutation entropy, fractal dimension, the Lyapunov exponent and the zero crossing rate. To ensure more accurate results, a Montecarlo simulation of one thousand trials is employed to train the classifiers and test the results. The goodness of the classification is performed upon the basis of the computation of quality parameters, such as the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), the F1 score coefficient and the accuracy. In all the cases the methodology proposed gives high performance results that encourage the line of research of the present work.

Abstract Trehalose is a type of carbohydrate that protects against different types of stress and is also used as a source of carbon storage in prokaryotes. There are four different ways of synthesizing trehalose in Acidithiobacillus ferrivorans and two in Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, but its purpose remains unknown. This study aimed to measure the production of trehalose under different conditions by quantifying it in three culture media at two different temperatures. The growth kinetics of both species were also assessed, and the trehalose concentration was analysed during the early stationary phase using an enzymatic method. The results showed that the modified 9K medium with ferrous iron at 28°C had the highest production of trehalose, with A. ferrivorans CF27 having a higher production of 0.34 µmol/mg protein compared to A. ferrooxidans ATCC 23270 at 0.31 µmol/mg protein. When using CuS, the production of trehalose was lower, with 0.02 and 0.03 µmol/mg protein for A. ferrivorans CF27 and A. ferrooxidans ATCC 23270, respectively, while no trehalose was detected in the presence of zinc. At 15°C, the enzymatic method did not detect any trehalose in all three culture media, this would indicate that this carbohydrate does not protect against low temperatures in either species.

Resumen La trehalosa es un tipo de carbohidrato, que en procariotas protege contra diferentes tipos de estrés y también se utiliza como fuente de almacenamiento de carbono. Hay cuatro formas diferentes de sintetizar trehalosa en Acidithiobacillus ferrivorans y dos en Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, pero su propósito sigue siendo desconocido. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo medir la producción de trehalosa en diferentes condiciones mediante su cuantificación en tres medios de cultivo a dos temperaturas diferentes. También se evaluó la cinética de crecimiento de ambas especies y se analizó la concentración de trehalosa durante la fase estacionaria temprana mediante un método enzimático. Los resultados mostraron que el medio 9K modificado con hierro ferroso a 28 °C tuvo la mayor producción de trehalosa, con A. ferrivorans CF27 con una mayor producción de 0.34 µmol/mg de proteína en comparación con A. ferrooxidans ATCC 23270 a 0.31 µmol/mg de proteína. Al utilizar CuS, la producción de trehalosa fue menor, con 0.02 y 0.03 µmol/mg de proteína para A. ferrivorans CF27 y A. ferrooxidans ATCC 23270, respectivamente, mientras que en presencia de zinc no se detectó trehalosa. A 15°C, el método enzimático no detectó trehalosa en los tres medios de cultivo, lo que indicaria que este carbohidrato no protege contra las bajas temperaturas en ninguna de las especies.

Resumen Objetivos: determinar la frecuencia del gen mecA en Staphylococcus aureus resistente a meticilina (MRSA) aislados de pacientes atendidos en un hospital de tercer nivel en la región Cajamarca, Perú; asimismo, determinar cuál de los dos antibióticos usados como screening fenotípico tiene mayor utilidad para explicar la presencia de dicho gen. Métodos: se analizaron 71 aislamientos bacterianos provenientes de muestras del Hospital Regional Docente de Cajamarca, la identificación de S. aureus se llevó a cabo mediante el equipo MicroScan. El screening fenotípico para resistencia a meticilina se realizó mediante la técnica de difusión, con discos de cefoxitina y oxacilina. La extracción de ADN se realizó mediante shock térmico, la detección del gen mecA se realizó mediante reacción en cadena de la polimerasa. El análisis estadístico se realizó con el software SPSS v.25. Resultados: de los 71 aislados, 40 (56,3%) fueron MRSA portadores del gen mecA, la mayoría de estos aislamientos correspondieron a pacientes hospitalizados 22 (31,0%), siendo más frecuentes en muestras de secreción bronquial 27 (38,0%). El screening fenotípico con disco de cefoxitina predijo mejor la presencia del gen mecA [P=0,010; Exp(B)= 12,3] en comparación con el disco de oxacilina. Conclusiones: este estudio demostró alta frecuencia de MRSA mecA positivo en muestras de origen clínico, principalmente de pacientes hospitalizados. Es importante establecer medidas de vigilancia para identificar MRSA en todos los hospitales de la región.

Abstract Objective: to determine the frequency of the mecA gene in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolated from patients treated at a third-level hospital in the Cajamarca region, Peru; as well as, to determine which of the two antibiotics used as phenotypic screening is more useful in explaining the presence of said gene. Methods: 71 bacterial isolates were analyzed from samples obtained from the Hospital Regional Docente of Cajamarca. The identification of S. aureus was carried out using the MicroScan system. Phenotypic screening for resistance to methicillin was performed using the diffusion technique with cefoxitin and oxacillin discs. DNA extraction was performed by heat shock, mecA gene detection was performed through polymerase chain reaction. For data analysis, the statistical software SPSS v.25 was used. Results: from 71 isolates, 40 (56,3%) were MRSA carriers of the mecA gene, the majority of these isolates corresponded to hospitalized patients 22 (31,0%), being more frequent in bronchial secretion samples 27 (38,0%). Phenotypic screening with cefoxitin disc was a better predictor for the presence of the mecA gene [P=0,010; Exp(B)= 12,3] compared to the oxacillin disc. Conclusions: It is shown a high frequency of positive MRSA mecA in samples of clinical origin, mainly from hospitalized patients. It is important to establish surveillance guidelines to identify MRSA in all hospitals in the region.

Abstract This study evaluated the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Santos Bay (SB) and the adjacent Santos Continental Shelf (SCS) in Brazil. Biliary metabolites were measured in several fish species to establish a baseline for future monitoring programs. Bile samples from different species of fish were collected monthly from July to December 2005 in SB, and in August 2005 and February 2006 on SCS. Metabolite concentrations were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detectors. Naphthalene, phenanthrene, and benzo[a]pyrene metabolite concentrations ranged from 24 to 810 µg g -1 of bile, 1.8 to 68 µg g -1 of bile, and below the limit of quantitation to 1.3 µg g -1 of bile, respectively. Despite its high concentrations, the levels of naphthalene metabolites were in regions of low-contamination, while benzo[a]pyrene metabolite were in the same range as those reported in moderately contaminated areas, which may indicate pyrolytic contamination by PAHs. No significant differences in the metabolite concentrations were found between the SB and the SCS samples or during the periods of collection. Future studies with a single biomonitoring species should be conducted, considering age, sex, and feeding condition of the individuals. The metabolite data presented in this study is an important baseline information for this urbanized region, which hosts several sources of contaminants.

ABSTRACT Objective: Perfectionist beliefs about emotions impact the experience and expression of emotions, being linked to increased levels of depression and anxiety. Given the influence of culture in the representation and expression of emotion, it is possible that beliefs vary across countries, but few empirical studies have been conducted on the theme. This study aims to compare Brazilian and British samples regarding their beliefs about emotional experience and expression. Methods: The current study compared a total of 960 Brazilian and British participants, with the samples having a similar profile in terms of age, gender and ethnicity. Participants answered online the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and Beliefs about Emotions Scale (BES). This study aims to compare Brazilian and British samples with regard to beliefs about emotional experience and expression. Results: Significant differences between samples were found for beliefs about emotions. As hypothesized, Brazilians scored lower on unhelpful beliefs about emotions, except for beliefs about experiencing negative feelings and emotional control. Differences in total BES scores remained even after the inclusion of depression and anxiety as covariates. Conclusions: Results suggest higher endorsement of perfectionist beliefs in a European versus a Latin American context, but highlight that this pattern depends on the specific beliefs being studied. These differences should be considered when working with people from different cultural backgrounds and developing cultural adaptations for clinical interventions and psychopathology models.

RESUMO Objetivo: Crenças perfeccionistas sobre emoções afetam a experiência e expressão de emoções, estando relacionadas a níveis aumentados de depressão e ansiedade. Dada a influência da cultura na representação e expressão de emoções, é possível que as crenças variem entre os países, mas poucos estudos empíricos foram realizados sobre o tema. Este estudo tem o objetivo de comparar amostras brasileiras e britânicas em relação às suas crenças sobre a experiência emocional e expressão. Métodos: O presente estudo comparou um total de 960 participantes brasileiros e britânicos, com as amostras tendo um perfil semelhante em termos de idade, gênero e etnia. Os participantes responderam on-line à Escala de Ansiedade Generalizada (GAD-7), ao Questionário de Saúde do Paciente (PHQ-9) e à Escala de Crenças sobre Emoções (BES). Resultados: Foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre as amostras em relação às crenças sobre emoções. Como hipotetizado, os brasileiros obtiveram pontuações mais baixas em crenças prejudiciais sobre emoções, exceto nas crenças sobre experienciar sentimentos negativos e controle emocional. As diferenças nos escores totais da BES permaneceram mesmo após a inclusão de depressão e ansiedade como covariáveis. Conclusões: Os resultados sugerem maior endosso de crenças perfeccionistas em um contexto europeu, em comparação com um contexto latino-americano, mas destacam que esse padrão depende das crenças específicas estudadas. Essas diferenças devem ser consideradas ao trabalhar com pessoas de diferentes origens culturais e no desenvolvimento de adaptações culturais para intervenções clínicas e modelos de psicopatologia.

Resumen Introducción. Los sensores remotos ofrecen la capacidad de observar un objeto sin estar en contacto con el mismo, son utilizados en aplicaciones para la agricultura y tienen un gran potencial de desarrollo para el cultivo del banano (Musa AAA). Durante las últimas décadas las investigaciones en sensores remotos y agricultura se han incrementado gracias a la disponibilidad de imágenes satelitales de alta resolución y al uso de vehículos aéreos no tripulados que generan información base para las investigaciones. Objetivo. Realizar una revisión general sobre las aplicaciones del uso de sensores remotos para el cultivo del banano en tres aspectos específicos: determinación del área de cultivo, estimación de su productividad y en el diagnóstico de enfermedades. Desarrollo. Las áreas de plantaciones comerciales de banano son de fácil detección visual o por medio clasificaciones de imágenes, como con las imágenes del radar de abertura sintética (SAR), que pueden alcanzar presiones superiores al 95%. Esto debido a la alta retrodispersión de las hojas grandes de la planta. No obstante, los estudios realizados en cuanto a productividad son escasos para el cultivo de banano y se han limitado al uso de índices de vegetación, con resultados bajos en sus correlaciones. En cuanto la identificación de enfermedades, se ha trabajado en las principales que afectan la producción con niveles de correlación superiores al 90 % para algunas enfermedades. Conclusión. La presente revisión evidencia que las plantaciones bananeras pueden ser delimitadas mediante el uso de sensores remotos y, de igual forma, estos permiten la identificación de las principales enfermedades en el cultivo. Sin embargo, los resultados obtenidos para determinar productividad son escasos y con poca precisión.

Abstract Introduction. Remote sensors offer the ability to observe an object without being in contact with it. They are widely used in agricultural applications and have large development potential in banana (Musa AAA) plantations. During the past decades, the research in remote sensing and agriculture has increased through the availability of high-resolution satellite images (spatial, spectral, and temporal) and the use of remotely piloted vehicles that generate base information for research. Objective. To carry out a general review on the applications of the use of remote sensors for banana plantations in three specific aspects: determination of the cultivation area, productivity estimation, and disease diagnosis. Development. The extension of land covered by commercial banana plantations can be detected visually or easily by means of remote image classifications, such as the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor, which hve resulted in classification accuracies of around 95%. This is due to the high backscattering of the large leaves of the plant. However, the studies on productivity are scarce for banana cultivation and have been limited to the use of vegetation index, showing poor results in their correlations. As for the identification of diseases, work has been done on the main diseases affecting production with correlation levels above 90 % for some diseases. Conclusion. This review shows that banana plantations can be detected through the use of remote sensors and, likewise, these allow the identification of the main diseases in the crop. However, the results obtained to determine productivity are scarce and with little precision.

Abstract Local flaps or based on a single perforator have great utility in reconstructive surgery, however, its use is complicated posterior midline due to the characteristics of the tissues, the keystone flap described in 2003 has become one of the main options for reconstruction due to safety, easy reproducibility, shorter surgical time, and shorter learning curve, there are three cases of posterior midline defects where the characteristics of the patient required a shorter recovery time with adequate functional and esthetic results.

Resumen La ecografía pulmonar (EP) ha demostrado ser una herramienta útil para detectar el grado de compromiso pulmonar en neumonía y síndrome de distrés respiratorio agudo. El presente estudio evalúa la asociación entre la puntuación de EP de 12 regiones y el ingreso de terapia intermedia a terapia intensiva en pacientes con neumonía por COVID-19. Se incluyó un total de 115 pacientes con diagnóstico de neumonía confirmada por radiografía de tórax, por SARS-CoV-2, se realizó una EP junto con la evaluación de laboratorio que incluyó la medición de marcadores inflamatorios (linfocitos, proteína C reactiva, Dímero D, procalcitonina, ferritina, lactato deshidrogenasa y pro péptido natriurético de tipo B). Se utilizó una puntuación ecográfica pul monar que caracteriza el grado de afección pulmonar como leve, moderado y grave, y se comparó el resultado con los marcadores inflamatorios de laboratorio. En el análisis univariado se observó una asociación entre la puntuación de la EP, los niveles elevados de procalcitonina y péptido natriurético cerebral y el ingreso a terapia intensiva. En el análisis multivariado solo la puntuación de EP fue un predictor independiente de requerimiento de terapia intensiva.

Abstract Lung ultrasound (LUS) has shown to be a useful tool to detect the degree of pulmonary involvement in patients with pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. The present study evaluates the association of the 12-region lung ultrasound score and the requirements of intensive care unit, in patients with COVID-19 infection who were admitted to intermediate care in a specialized hospital; 115 patients with a diagnosis of pneumonia confirmed by chest radiography secondary to SARS-CoV-2 were included, LUS was performed together with the laboratory evaluation that included the measurement of inflammatory biomarkers (lymphocytes, C-reactive protein, D-dimer, procalcitonin, ferritin, lactate dehydrogenase, and pro B-type natriuretic peptide). Lung ultrasound score was used, characterizing the degree of lung involvement as mild, moderate, and severe, and the results were compared with inflammatory biomarkers. In the univariate analysis, an association was observed between the lung ultrasound score, elevated levels of procalcitonin and brain natriuretic peptide, and the admission to intensive care. In the multivariate analysis, only the lung ultrasound score was an independent predictor of need for intensive therapy.

Abstract The lockdown was the measure taken by the Peruvian state as a response to the pandemic caused by COVID-19. This imposition meant a delay for almost all sectors, including the academic sector. This study analyzes the repercussions of the lockdown through scientific work in Peru in 2020, focusing on subjects of biodiversity and conservation. We conducted a during July and August of 2020, which was answered by 111 researchers. Results of the survey show that the most affected research area was field research due to the restrictions; and that the most affected group were women, which presented the highest percentages of dissatisfaction, both in their work and emotional state. This research reveals the reality of a country with a historically low investment in research, and now the work of many researchers is restricted due to the current economic and employment situation due to the pandemic. Its replication in other Latin American countries could be of help for future policies in favor of academic research.

Resumen La cuarentena fue la medida tomada por el estado peruano para enfrentar a la pandemia causada por el COVID- 19. Esta significó un retraso para casi todos los sectores, incluyendo el sector académico. Este estudio analiza las consecuencias de esta medida en el trabajo de los investigadores científicos del Perú durante el 2020, enfocándose en aquellos que trabajan en biodiversidad y conservación. Se realizó una encuesta durante los meses de julio y agosto de 2020 que fue respondida por 111 investigadores. Los resultados de la encuesta muestran que el área más afectada fue la investigación en campo por las evidentes restricciones, y el grupo más afectado fue el de las investigadoras quienes presentaron los porcentajes más altos de insatisfacción, tanto en su vida laboral como en su estado emocional. Esta investigación da a conocer la realidad del Perú, con una inversión históricamente baja en investigación y donde, con la situación económica y laboral provocada por la pandemia, el trabajo de muchos investigadores se vio restringido. Consideramos que la réplica de esta investigación en otros países de Latinoamérica podría ser de ayuda para futuras políticas a favor del trabajo científico en los países y regionalmente.
