Resumen Tradicionalmente, la historia del pensamiento económico ha relegado a las mujeres y sus aportaciones a un lugar marginal desde el despertar de la economía como disciplina autónoma. El presente trabajo va en contra de esta tendencia al recuperar la notable trayectoria de una de las mujeres pioneras en economía, Jane Marcet (1769-1858), contrastando sus escritos con las posibilidades de hacer “buena economía” desde diferentes enfoques, incluso desde la literatura. Este rescate tiene lugar a través de las recomendaciones de McCloskey sobre la retórica en economía y la afirmación de la autora de que “la economía es literatura”.

Abstract History of Economic Thought traditionally relegated women and their contributions to a marginal place since the awakening of Economics as an autonomous discipline. The present paper goes against this trend, recovering the remarkable trajectory of one of the pioneer female economist, Jane Marcet (1769-1858), and contrasting her writings with the possibilities of doing “good economics” from different approaches, including Literature. This rescue takes place through McCloskey’s recommendations regarding the rhetoric in economics and the author’s affirmation that “Economics is Literature”.

ABSTRACT Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease associated with cognitive impairment. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) has been used as a recommended global cognition scale for patients with PD, but there are some concerns about its application, partially due to the floor and ceiling effects. Objective: To explore the floor and ceiling effects on the MoCA in patients with PD in Brazil. Methods: Cross-sectional study with data from patients with PD from five Brazilian Movement Disorders Clinics, excluding individuals with a possible diagnosis of dementia. We analyzed the total score of the MoCA, as well as its seven cognitive domains. The floor and ceiling effects were evaluated for the total MoCA score and domains. Multivariate analyses were performed to detect factors associated with floor and ceiling effects. Results: We evaluated data from 366 patients with PD and approximately 19% of individuals had less than five years of education. For the total MoCA score, there was no floor or ceiling effect. There was a floor effect in the abstraction and delayed memory recall domains in 20% of our sample. The ceiling effect was demonstrated in all domains (80.8% more common in naming and 89% orientation), except delayed recall. Education was the main factor associated with the floor and ceiling effects, independent of region, sex, age at evaluation, and disease duration. Conclusion: The floor and ceiling effects are present in specific domains of the MoCA in Brazil, with a strong impact on education. Further adaptations of the MoCA structure for underrepresented populations may reduce these negative effects.

RESUMO A doença de Parkinson (DP) é uma doença neurodegenerativa comum associada ao declínio cognitivo. A Avaliação Cognitiva de Montreal (Montreal Cognitive Assessment — MoCA) tem sido usada como uma escala de cognição global recomendada para pacientes com DP, mas existem algumas preocupações sobre sua aplicação, em parte pelos efeitos solo e teto. Objetivo: Explorar os efeitos solo e teto na MoCA em pacientes com DP no Brasil. Métodos: Estudo transversal com dados de pacientes com DP oriundos de cinco Clínicas de Distúrbios de Movimento no Brasil, excluindo-se pessoas com possível diagnóstico de demência. Nós analisamos a pontuação total da MoCA, assim como a de seus sete domínios cognitivos. Os efeitos solo e teto foram avaliados para a pontuação total da MoCA e seus domínios. Foram feitas análises multivariadas para a detecção de fatores associados os efeitos solo e teto. Resultados: Nós avaliamos dados de 366 pacientes com DP, e aproximadamente 19% das pessoas tinham menos que cinco anos de escolaridade. Para a pontuação total do MoCA, não houve efeito solo ou teto. Houve efeito solo nos domínios abstração e memória de evocação tardia em 20% de nossa amostra. O efeito teto foi demonstrado em todos os domínios (80,8% mais comum em nomeação e 89% orientação), com exceção de memória de evocação tardia. A educação foi o principal fator associado aos efeitos solo e teto, independentemente de região, sexo, idade na avaliação e duração da doença. Conclusão: Os efeitos solo e teto estão presentes em domínios específicos da MoCA no Brasil, com forte impacto da educação. Adaptações adicionais à estrutura da MoCA para populações vulneráveis podem reduzir esses efeitos negativos.

Resumen Con el fin de profundizar en el conocimiento sobre los efectos de determinados insectos sobre el registro óseo de la Depresión del río Salado, se desarrolló un experimento actualístico con la especie Dermestes maculatus (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) y restos actuales de cuatro especies de fauna de diferentes tamaños (Myocastor coypus, Dasypus hybridus, Ovis aries, Oryctolagus cuniculus). D. maculatus es un coleóptero cosmopolita que coloniza carcasas que se encuentran en superficie y en etapas avanzadas de descomposición para consumir tejido muscular seco. Ocasionalmente, puede modificar los huesos y dejar marcas. En un contenedor se colocaron 15 unidades esqueletarias -con diferentes estados de integridad y cantidad de tejido muscular- y una colonia de D. maculatus; luego, se registraron semanalmente durante seis meses el estado de los restos y el comportamiento de los insectos. Se observó mayor actividad en especímenes fracturados y con tejido. Los huesos fueron limpiados y analizados con lupa trinocular (8-40x). Se registraron escasas estrías en tres especímenes, uno de ellos sin tejido fresco desde el inicio de la experiencia. Estos resultados contribuyen a la información disponible sobre las modificaciones de D. maculatus en el registro óseo y su rol como agente tafonómico.

Abstract To deepen the current knowledge about the effects of certain insects on the bone record of the Salado River Depression, we carried out an actualistic experiment using the species Dermestes maculatus (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) and modern bones of four faunal species of different size (Myocastor coypus, Dasypus hybridus, Ovis aries, Oryctolagus cuniculus). D. maculatus is a cosmopolitan beetle that colonizes surface carcasses in advanced stages of decomposition to consume dry muscle tissue. Occasionally, it can modify the bones and leave marks. 15 skeletal units with different states of integrity and amount of muscle tissue were disposed in a container with a colony of D. maculatus; then, a weekly record for six months was made by observing changes in the remains and in the behavior of the insects. Greater activity was observed in fractured specimens and with tissue. Subsequently, the bones were removed, cleaned, and analyzed with a trinocular microscope (8-40x). Few striae were recorded only on three specimens, one of them without fresh tissue since the beginning of the experiment. These results contribute to the available data regarding the modifications of D. maculatus on the bone record and its role as a taphonomic agent.

Abstract In the Antarctic environment, yeasts are versatile eukaryotes that have shown wide dispersion in different substrates, producing active enzymes in extreme conditions, but their relevance in biotechnological applications is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the production of extracellular hydrolases by yeasts isolated from Antarctic lichens and molecularly identify these isolates. From a total of 144 isolates on the screening, 109 (76%) produced at least one of the hydrolases tested, with most activities for proteases 59 (41%), cellulases 58 (40%), esterases 57 (39%), lipases 29 (20%), amylases 23 (16%) and pectinases 20 (14%). Among these isolates, 76 were identified, most belonged to the phylum Basidiomycota (n=73) with the dominance of Vishniacozyma victoriae (n=27), Cystobasidium alpinum (n=3), Mrakia niccombsii (n=3), Cystobasidium laryngis (n=2), Bannozyma yamatoana (n=2), Holtermanniella nyarrowii (n=2), and Glaciozyma martinii (n=2). This study is the first one reporting extracellular enzyme production by yeasts isolated from thallus of the species of Antarctic lichens Lecania brialmontii, Polycauliona candelaria, Usnea capillacea, Cladonia metacorallifera, and Polycauliona regalis. With these data, it’s possible to confirm lichens as a source of hydrolase-producing yeasts, reinforcing the potential of these microorganisms in bioprospecting studies of catalytic molecules from polar regions that may be useful in promising biotechnological applications.

Abstract Staphylococcus aureus is among the major pathogens involved in food poisoning, and meat contaminated with S. aureus coagulase positive is considered a public health risk because the bacterium is resistant to several conventional antimicrobials. Mycocins are substances produced by yeasts that secrete glycoproteins, which can also be called toxin killers, they have an inhibitory action on other microorganisms. The Wickerhamomyces anomalus, is one of the microorganisms capable of producing these mycocins, resulting in the action of disturbances on the cell wall of the pathogen causing deleterious effects. This work aims to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the mycocins produced by W. anomalus WA45 against the 29 strains of S. aureus coagulase positive isolated from bovine, porcine and chicken meat and 1 standard strain. The antimicrobial action of the mycocins present on the culture supernatant of W. anomalus WA45 was tested by microdilution and the results were satisfactory, since 100% inhibition of strains of S. aureus coagulase positive. We concluded that the mycocins present in the supernatant of W. anomalus WA45 showed antimicrobial action, being candidates for the development of new products for the biocontrol and bioconservation of meat.

Abstract Epicauta atomaria (Meloinae: Epicautini) is a meloid that belongs to the Epicauta maculata species group. It is native to South America with a very wide distribution range that goes from 15° N, in central Brazil (Mato Grosso and Bahia), to 40° S, in the province of Río Negro (Argentina). Epicauta atomaria is recognized mainly by its coloring pattern: black integument, gray pubescent interrupted by glabrous macules. Despite the information collected for this insect, knowledge about its host plants, their economic importance, and oviposition behavior is highly fragmented and is generally based on isolated observations. The principal objectives of this work were: to provide information on its ecology, contributing with new distribution data for South America, make a complete list of associated cultivated and wild plants, providing new records, and describe and illustrate, for the first time, both the oviposition behavior and the different immature stages. As a result, we observed that E. atomaria has diurnal activity and is found preferentially on its host plants. Of the total number of plants registered, the most important families were Amaranthaceae and Solanaceae, and to a lesser extent Fabaceae. On the other hand, it was observed that the females lay their eggs in cavities in the ground, in compact masses that become darker as they mature. The larval development of E. atomaria included morphologically and biologically distinct phases, as was identified for other meloids. This study highlights the fact that E. atomaria is present in agricultural systems, therefore it is necessary to intensify research on the incidence of this insect in different crops of food interest and its possible agroecological management. Similarly, the study on associated wild plants should be expanded because they could be considered as primary alternative resources by these insects and their importance in being maintained or preserved in the vicinity of agricultural crops.

Resumen Epicauta atomaria (Meloinae: Epicautini) es un meloideo que pertenece al grupo de especies Epicauta maculata. Es nativo de América del Sur con un rango de distribución muy amplio que va desde los 15° N, en el centro de Brasil (Mato Grosso y Bahía) hasta los 40° S en la provincia de Río Negro (Argentina). A los adultos de E. atomaria se los reconoce principalmente por su patrón de coloración: tegumento negro, revestimiento gris interrumpido por máculas glabras. A pesar de la información recopilada para este insecto, el conocimiento sobre sus plantas huéspedes, su importancia económica y comportamiento de oviposición es muy fragmentado y se basa generalmente en observaciones aisladas. Es por ello que los objetivos del presente trabajo fueron aportar información sobre su ecología, contribuyendo con nuevos datos de distribución para América del Sur; confeccionar un listado completo de plantas cultivadas y silvestres asociadas, aportando nuevos registros; y describir e ilustrar por primera vez tanto el comportamiento de oviposición como los diferentes estados inmaduros. Como resultado, por un lado, hemos podido observar que E. atomaria presenta actividad diurna y se lo encuentra preferentemente sobre sus plantas huéspedes. Del total de plantas registradas, las familias más importantes fueron Amaranthaceae y Solanaceae, y en menor medida Fabaceae. Por otro lado, observamos que las hembras colocan sus huevos en cavidades en el suelo, en masas compactas que se van tornando más oscuras conforme van madurando. El desarrollo larvario de E. atomaria incluyó fases morfológica y biológicamente distintas como se identificó para otros meloideos. Este estudio pone en relevancia que E. atomaria se encuentra presente en los sistemas agrícolas por lo que se hace necesario intensificar las investigaciones sobre la incidencia de este insecto en los diferentes cultivos de interés alimenticio y su posible manejo agroecológico. De igual forma se debería ampliar el estudio sobre plantas silvestres asociadas en virtud de que pudieran considerarse como recursos alternativos primarios por parte de estos insectos y su importancia en ser mantenidos o preservados en las inmediaciones de los cultivos agrícolas.

Resumen: Este trabajo tiene como objetivo general analizar y caracterizar la condición internacional de la República Popular China, desde el inicio del siglo XXI hasta la actualidad. El estudio va desde la entrada de China a la Organización Mundial de Comercio -OMC- (diciembre de 2001) hasta la actual presidencia de Xi Jinping (iniciada en 2013). Para dar consecución a este objetivo, nos hemos planteado específicamente: a) describir los antecedentes históricos de este proceso desde la muerte de Mao Zedong y las reformas impulsadas por Deng Xiaoping; b) examinar y caracterizar los principales elementos de la evolución reciente de China en el contexto internacional, focalizándonos en sus relaciones económicas globales, su desarrollo militar y su política exterior.

Abstract: This paper has as a general objective to analyze and characterize the international condition of the People's Republic of China, from the beginning of the 21st century to the present. The study goes from the entrance of China to the World Trade Organization -OMC- (December 2001) to the current presidency of Xi Jinping (started in 2013). To achieve this goal, we have specifically set out: a) to describe the historical background of this process since the death of Mao Zedong and the reforms promoted by Deng Xiaoping; b) examine and characterize the main elements of China's recent evolution in the international context, focusing on its global economic relations, its military development and its foreign policy.

According to the World Health Organization, amoxicillin (AMX) is the most widely consumed antibiotic in the world. Consequently, there is great interest in the development of new technologies that allow the removal of this type of contaminant, as exposure to antibiotic residues can cause a variety of adverse effects, such as toxicity and antimicrobial resistance. In this work, AMX adsorption from aqueous solution was investigated using nickel ferrite nanoparticles. The nanoadsorbents were prepared by the coprecipitation method, annealed at 300 to 700 °C, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Mössbauer spectroscopy (ME) and vibratory sample magnetometry (VSM). Nanoparticle size, pH and temperature were found to significantly affect the amount of adsorbed AMX. The pseudo-second order kinetic model described the adsorption process and the adsorption isotherm fitted to the Freundlich model. AMX adsorption capacity was 104-45 mg g−1 (miligram of AMX per gram of ferrite) for ferrite annealed at 300-700 °C, respectively. The nanoadsorbents employed showed higher AMX removal efficiency when compared to other iron oxides. Moreover, the good reuse results obtained showed their great potential for antibiotic removal by adsorption.

RESUMO Introdução: Os estudos neurofisiológicos são métodos auxiliares para compreender melhor as características e a natureza dos distúrbios do movimento. A eletromiografia (EMG), em associação com o eletroencefalograma (EEG) e o acelerômetro, podem ser utilizados para avaliar um espectro de movimentos hipo e hipercinéticos. Técnicas específicas podem ser aplicadas para melhor caracterizar a fenomenologia, ajudar a distinguir a origem psicogênica da orgânica e avaliar o local mais provável de geração do movimento no sistema nervoso. Objetivo: Pretendemos fornecer ao clínico uma atualização sobre ferramentas neurofisiológicas úteis para avaliar distúrbios do movimento na prática clínica. Métodos: Revisão não sistemática da literatura publicada até junho de 2019. Resultados: Uma diversidade de protocolos foi encontrada e descrita. Dentre eles, inclui-se o uso de EMG para a definição do padrão de distonia, mioclonia, mioquimia, miorritmia e painfull legs moving toes, além do uso de EMG em associação ao acelerômetro para avaliar tremor e, em associação ao EEG para avaliar mioclonia. Ademais, técnicas para medida indireta de excitabilidade cortical e do tronco encefálico ajudam a descrever e diagnosticar a fisiologia anormal da doença de Parkinson, parkinsonismo atípico, distonia e mioclonia. Conclusão: Esses estudos podem ser úteis para o diagnóstico e geralmente são subutilizados na prática neurológica.

ABSTRACT Background: Neurophysiological studies are ancillary tools to better understand the features and nature of movement disorders. Electromyography (EMG), together with electroencephalography (EEG) and accelerometer, can be used to evaluate a hypo and hyperkinetic spectrum of movements. Specific techniques can be applied to better characterize the phenomenology, help distinguish functional from organic origin and assess the most probable site of the movement generator in the nervous system. Objective: We intend to provide an update for clinicians on helpful neurophysiological tools to assess movement disorders in clinical practice. Methods: Non-systematic review of the literature published up to June 2019. Results: A diversity of protocols was found and described. These include EMG analyses to define dystonia, myoclonus, myokymia, myorhythmia, and painful legs moving toes pattern; EMG in combination with accelerometer to study tremor; and EEG-EMG to study myoclonus. Also, indirect measures of cortical and brainstem excitability help to describe and diagnose abnormal physiology in Parkinson's disease, atypical parkinsonism, dystonia, and myoclonus. Conclusion: These studies can be helpful for the diagnosis and are usually underutilized in neurological practice.

Resumen Se analizó un resultado con alteración cromosómica tomado de una base de datos conformada por un total de 4755 muestras de líquido amniótico extraídos mediante amniocentesis con indicación de su médico tratante, riesgo sérico y edad materna avanzada. En este reporte se presenta la detección de un mosaico de trisomía 21 en líquido amniótico, mediante la técnica de Banda G donde se analizaron 20 metafases. Los resultados obtenidos documentan una composición cromosómica 47, XY+21 y 46, XY con una relación 9:11 respecto a las metafases analizadas, confirmándose así el diagnóstico del Síndrome de Down secundario a mosaico.

Abstract A result with chromosomal alteration was analyzed from a database consisting of a total of 4755 samples of amniotic fluid extracted by amniocentesis with indication of the attending physician, serum risk and advanced maternal age. This report presents the detection of a mosaicism of trisomy 21 in amniotic fluid, using G- Banding where 20 metaphases were analyzed. The results obtained document a chromosomal composition 47, XY + 21 and 46, XY with a 9:11 ratio with respect to the metaphases analyzed, confirming the diagnosis of Down syndrome secondary to mosaicism.
