Resumo: Apresentamos a primeira lista de espécies de Odonata (Insecta) para o estado do Acre no Brasil, adicionando aspectos ecológicos e notas sobre o seu estado de conservação. O Acre é um dos estados com o menor esforço de coleta da região Norte do Brasil e uma área de importância geográfica, pois é uma transição entre os Andes e a Amazônia. Foram realizadas coletas em 35 riachos, distribuídos em nove municípios e também complementados com informações de dados secundários de revisão na literatura e bases de dados de coleções biológicas. Registramos 140 espécies, distribuídas em 55 gêneros, das quais 16 espécies são novos registros para o estado, tornando-o o segundo em número de espécies na região Norte do Brasil. Das espécies registradas, 113 estão classificadas dentro de alguma categoria de ameaça da lista vermelha da IUCN e 110 na lista nacional do ICMBio. Analisando as informações do conhecimento das espécies, o conhecimento das fêmeas e larvas ainda muito limitado e na maioria das vezes disponíveis apenas para os machos adultos. Pela primeira vez é registrada a ocorrência da Drepanoneura loutoni von Ellenrieder & Garrison (2008) no Brasil, também apresentamos fotos das principais estruturas, com comentários sobre sua biologia. Nosso trabalho mostra a importância da realização de estudos de biodiversidade em áreas ainda pouco estudadas como a do estado do Acre e serve como base para futuras expedições na região.

Abstract: Here we present the first Odonata (Insecta) species list for the state of Acre, Northern Brazil, adding ecological aspects and notes on its taxonomy and conservation status. Regarding Odonata samplings, Acre is one of the least explored states in the northern region of Brazil and an area of geographic importance, as it is a transition between the Andean and Amazon regions. Collections were carried out in 35 streams, distributed in nine municipalities. We also supplemented our database from the review of secondary literature and data from biological collections. We recorded 140 species, distributed in 55 genera, of which 16 species are new records for the state, making Acre state the second in the number of recorded species in northern Brazil. Of the recorded species, 113 are classified within some threat category of the IUCN red list and 110 in the ICMBio national list. Analyzing the taxonomic information on each recorded species, knowledge of females and larvae is still very limited and, most of the time, only available to adult males. For the first time, the occurrence of Drepanoneura loutonivon Ellenrieder & Garrison (2008) is reported for Brazil, and we also present photos of its main morphological characters, with comments on its biology. Our study shows the importance of conducting biodiversity research in poorly studied areas; such as the state of Acre, and serves as a basis for future expeditions in the region.

Abstract: What controls the formation of patchy substrates of white sand vegetation in the Amazonian lowlands is still unclear. This research integrated the geological history and plant inventories of a white sand vegetation patch confined to one large fan-shaped sandy substrate of northern Amazonia, which is related to a megafan environment. We examined floristic patterns to determine whether abundant species are more often generalists than the rarer one, by comparing the megafan environments and older basement rocks. We also investigated the pattern of species accumulation as a function of increasing sampling effort. All plant groups recorded a high proportion of generalist species on the megafan sediments compared to older basement rocks. The vegetation structure is controlled by topographic gradients resulting from the smooth slope of the megafan morphology and microreliefs imposed by various megafan subenvironments. Late Pleistocene-Holocene environmental disturbances caused by megafan sedimentary processes controlled the distribution of white sand vegetation over a large area of the Amazonian lowlands, and may have also been an important factor in species diversification during this period. The integration of geological and biological data may shed new light on the existence of many patches of white sand vegetation from the plains of northern Amazonia.

A transmissão planta-semente de Colletotrichum gossypii var. cephalosporioides, agente causal da ramulose do algodoeiro, não tem sido correlacionada com a severidade da doença no campo. Entretanto, baixos níveis de incidência têm, muitas vezes, resultado em altos índices de infecção das sementes pelo patógeno. Esse fato induz o cancelamento de campos de produção de sementes em algumas regiões produtoras. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de níveis de inóculo inicial, constituído de plantas com sintomas da doença, em relação à incidência da ramulose quando 70% das maçãs estavam formadas, período considerado como de maior suscetibilidade à infecção, bem como a transmissão planta-semente em relação aos níveis de incidência da doença no campo. O experimento foi conduzido durante os anos agrícolas de 2006 e 2007, com níveis de inóculo inicial de 0,0; 0,1; 0,2; 0,4; 0,8 e 1,6% de plantas com sintomas aos 40 dias após a emergência, em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições e parcelas com oito linhas de 15 m. A incidência da ramulose foi avaliada quando 70% das maçãs estavam formadas, em 200 plantas, nas quatro fileiras centrais. Após a colheita, as sementes foram submetidas ao teste de sanidade pelo método do papel de filtro. Observou-se correlação significativa entre os níveis de inóculo inicial e a incidência da doença quando 70% das maçãs estavam formadas, bem como entre os níveis de incidência no campo e a incidência do patógeno nas sementes, sendo esta correlação altamente significativa no ano de 2006. Campos de produção com incidência de ramulose acima de 5% podem induzir níveis elevados de infecção nas sementes.

The transmission of Colletotrichum gossypii var. cephalosporioides from plant to seeds of cotton, normally, does not have correlation with disease severity in the field. However, low incidence of the disease, sometimes is associated with high infection of the pathogen in the seeds that is one of the causes of rejection of seed production fields in some regions of Brazil. This research had the objective to evaluate the effect of source of inoculum from diseased plants, in relation to incidence of ramulosis when 70% of bolls were developed and the relation between the incidence of disease in the field and the infection of cotton seeds. The experiments were carried out during two seasons in 2006 and 2007 with 0,0; 0,1; 0,2; 0,4; 0,8 and 1,6% of incidence, 40 days after emergence in randomized blocks with four repetitions and parcels of eight planted lines of 15 m of lenght. The incidence of disease was evaluated when 70% of bolls were completely developed in 200 plants in the four central lines. After the harvest the seeds were submitted to health test through the blotter method. It was verified high correlation between initial inoculum and incidence of disease when 70% of bolls were developed and incidence of disease in the field and infection of cotton seeds by the pathogen. The correlation was higher in 2006 than in 2007. Seed production fields with incidence of disease higher than 5% can cause high incidence of the pathogen in the cotton seeds.

Os budiões (Perciformes: Scaridae) representam um grupo funcional crítico em recifes de corais uma vez que a intensa atividade de herbivoria que desempenham ajuda a evitar a exclusão de corais por algas. Apesar de alimentarem-se preferencialmente de algas e detrito, algumas espécies de budiões também consomem corais vivos, causando efeitos negativos aos corais, os quais podem superar os benefícios decorrentes da remoção de algas. As espécies de budiões diferem acentuadamente em sua morfologia bucal, atividade de forrageio e potencial de escavação do substrato, sendo tipicamente divididas em três grupos funcionais: podadores, raspadores e escavadores. O reconhecimento das espécies nesses grupos funcionais ajuda a entender seus efeitos relativos em termos de bioerosão, condição e sobrevivência de corais, alteração do hábitat e dinâmica do ecossistema. No presente estudo nós registramos a predação de corais vivos pelos budiões endêmicos do Brasil Scarus trispinosus e Sparisoma amplum no maior complexo coralíneo do Atlântico Sul (Banco dos Abrolhos, leste do Brasil) e comentamos sobre a classificação dessas espécies em grupos funcionais com base em observações comportamentais. Scarus trispinosus e Sp. amplum alocaram 0.8% e 8.1% de suas mordidas a corais vivos respectivamente. Sparisoma amplum apresentou menores taxas alimentares, menor número de mordidas em seqüência e maior tamanho de mordidas que Sc. trispinosus. A taxa de mordidas e o número de mordidas em seqüência correlacionaram-se negativamente com o tamanho corporal para Sc. trispinosus, mas não para Sp. amplum. Nossos resultados indicam que Sp. amplum pode ser reconhecida como uma espécie primariamente escavadora, além do mais especializado budião predador de corais no Brasil, ao passo que Sc. trispinosus pode ser reconhecida como uma espécie raspadora ou escavadora, dependendo de seu tamanho corporal. Essa classificação funcional é similar àquela aplicada a suposta espécie irmã de Sc. trispinosus (Sc. coeruleus) e para a espécie irmã de Sp. amplum (Sp. viride) no Caribe, indicando que estes dois pares de espécies congenéricas desempenham papéis ecológicos similares em regiões geográficas distintas.

Parrotfishes (Perciformes: Scaridae) represent a critical functional group on coral reefs because their intense herbivory activity helps in avoiding coral overgrowth by algae. Although feeding preferentially on algae and detritus, some parrotfish species also consume live corals, leading to detrimental effects that may offset the benefits of removing competitive seaweeds. Parrotfish species differ markedly in terms of jaw morphology, foraging activity and extent of substratum excavation, and are typically divided into three functional groups: browsers, scrapers and excavators. The recognition of species within each functional group helps to understand their relative effects in terms of bioerosion, coral fitness and survival, habitat alteration and ecosystem dynamics. Here we report on live coral predation by the Brazilian endemic parrotfishes Scarus trispinosus and Sparisoma amplum in the largest coral reefs of the South Atlantic (Abrolhos Bank, eastern Brazil) and comment on their classification into functional groups based on direct behavioral observations. Scarus trispinosus and Sp. amplum allocated 0.8% and 8.1% of their bites to live corals respectively. Sparisoma amplum fed at lower rates, took shorter feeding forays and larger bites than Sc. trispinosus. Bite rates and foray size were negatively correlated to body size for Sc. trispinosus, but not for Sp. amplum. Our results indicate that Sp. amplum may be primarily recognized as an excavating species, as well as the most specialized parrotfish coral predator in Brazil, while Sc. trispinosus may be recognized as a scraper or excavator depending on its body size. This functional classification corresponds to the classification used for the putative sister taxa of Sc. trispinosus (Sc. coeruleus) and the sister taxa of Sp. amplum (Sp. viride) in the Caribbean, indicating that these two congeneric species pairs play similar ecological roles in different geographic regions.

RESUMO Este trabalho, objetiva oferecer alternativas de redução nos custos de sistemas de irrigação por gotejamento do meloeiro, sem afetar o manejo da irrigação e comparar o gotejamento enterrado, em termos de rendimento da cultura, ao gotejamento superficial. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em um solo arenoso coeso de tabuleiro costeiro, com o delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, em parcelas subsubdivididas, com cinco repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram da combinação de quatro intervalos de irrigação (1, 2, 3 e 4 dias) com as linhas laterais de gotejamento junto à fileira de plantas e entre fileiras alternadas de plantas, superficial e enterradas a profundidade de 0,25 m. O intervalo de irrigação e a disposição das linhas laterais não afetaram a produtividade do meloeiro.

ABSTRACT The research had as its objective the provision of alternatives to reduce costs of drip irrigation systems without affecting the irrigation management and to compare subsurface drip to surface drip in terms of crop yield. The experiment was carried out in a cohesive sand from coastal tablelands. The experiment followed a split-split plot design, in random blocks, with five replications. The treatments consisted of a combination of four irrigation intervals (1, 2, 3 and 4 days) with drip lines in crop rows and drip lines between alternate rows on surface drip line and buried at 0.25 m. The irrigation intervals and drip line location in crop rows did not affect melon yields.
