Abstract Background The level of health literacy can be a factor that influences the behaviors and health of individuals. Objective To analyze the perception of adults and the elderly on their behaviors and their oral health conditions according to their level of health literacy (HL). Method The qualitative study was carried out with adults and the elderly who participated in the “Piracicaba Adult Oral Health Cohort” and had been classified into three tooth loss profiles: 1) never having lost teeth; 2) incidence of tooth loss ≥ 4 teeth; 3) total toothlessness and the level of health literacy dichotomized in the median at high and low HL. There was a new home interview recorded using a script, and after transcription, content analysis was performed. Results The individuals, regardless of the HL level, identified risk and protective factors that were decisive in the oral health-disease process. However, individuals with low HL were more adept at risky behavior. The individual factors were preponderant for the understanding of his oral condition, either by the feeling of carelessness or by the feeling of responsibility for the lack of access to dental services, either by the socioeconomic or geographical aspect. Conclusion Individuals with high HL showed greater argumentative capacity and understanding of healthy behaviors, such as oral hygiene and regular use of dental services, regardless of the type of service used.

Resumo Introdução O nível da literacia em saúde pode ser um fator que influencia os comportamentos e a saúde dos indivíduos. Objetivo Analisar a percepção de adultos e idosos sobre os seus comportamentos e sua condição de saúde bucal segundo o seu nível de literacia em saúde (LS). Método O presente estudo qualitativo foi realizado com adultos e idosos que que participaram da ‘Coorte de Saúde Bucal de Adultos de Piracicaba’, sendo classificados conforme os três perfis de perda dentária seguintes: 1) nunca ter perdido dentes; 2) incidência de perda dentária ≥ 4 dentes; 3) edêntulo total e com nível de literacia em saúde alta e baixa de acordo com a variável LS dicotomizada a partir da mediana. Para a coleta dos dados, foi feita uma nova entrevista domiciliar gravada com uso de roteiro-guia e após a transcrição foi realizada a análise de conteúdo. Resultados Independente do nível de LS, os indivíduos identificaram fatores de risco e proteção determinantes para o processo saúde-doença bucal. No entanto, os entrevistados com baixa LS apresentaram uma maior propensão aos comportamentos de risco. Os fatores individuais foram preponderantes para o entendimento de sua condição bucal, seja pelo sentimento de descuido ou de responsabilidade pela falta de acesso aos serviços odontológicos, seja pelo aspecto socioeconômico ou geográfico. Conclusão Os indivíduos com alta LS apresentaram uma capacidade argumentativa e um entendimento maiores sobre os comportamentos saudáveis, como higiene bucal e uso regular do serviço odontológico, independente do tipo de serviço utilizado.

Resumo A hyperreactio luteinalis (HL) é uma entidade rara da gravidez que se caracteriza por um aumento massivo dos ovários causado pelo desenvolvimento de múltiplos cistos benignos teca-luteínicos. A maioria das grávidas permanece assintomática e as tumefações anexiais são diagnosticadas incidentalmente na ecografia obstétrica de rotina. Uma atitude expectante deve ser considerada uma vez que a HL regride espontaneamente no pós-parto. Porém, a HL pode mimetizar um tumor maligno do ovário e, deste modo, o conhecimento desta condição permite evitar intervenções cirúrgicas desnecessárias. Neste artigo, descrevemos um caso de HL numa gravidez unifetal espontânea, discutindo a abordagem conservadora realizada.

Abstract Hyperreactio luteinalis (HL) is a rare pregnancy-related condition characterized by a massive enlargement of the ovaries due to the development of multiple benign theca lutein cysts. Most pregnant women remain asymptomatic and adnexal masses are incidentally diagnosed on routine obstetrical ultrasound. Expectant management should be considered as HL spontaneously regresses in the postpartum period. However, HL may mimic an ovarian malignancy and so it is essential to remind this condition, to avoid unnecessary surgical interventions. We describe a case of a HL in a spontaneous singleton pregnancy, discussing the conducted conservative approach.

Aim This study analyzes factors associated with dimensions of health literacy (HL) functional, communicative and critical among public health service users with chronic non-communicable diseases. Methods A cross-sectional analytical research was carried out in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, with adults and older adults attending Family Health Units (FHU). Data were collected by oral exam (CPOD and CPI) and a questionnaire on systemic conditions, sociodemographic factors, health behaviors and HLS (HLS-14). The outcomes consisted of functional, communicative, and critical HL dimensions dichotomized by median (high and low), which were analyzed by chi-square test (p<0.05) to find associations with the variables studied. Results The study sample comprised 238 FHU users with 62.7 (± 10.55) mean age, of which 47.5% (n=113) showed high functional HL, 50.0% (n=119) high communicative HL, and 46.2% (n=110) high critical HL. High functional HL was associated with men (p<0.05). Functional and communicative HL were associated with having higher education (p<0.001 and p=0.018, respectively). High communicative and critical HL were associated with regular use of dental and medical services (p<0.05). Individuals with low functional HL were more likely to present poor tooth brushing (p=0.020). High HL (in all three dimensions) was associated with regular flossing and having more teeth (p<0.05). Conclusion Functional, communicative and critical HL were associated with health behaviors and clinical outcomes, whereas the functional dimension was also associated with sociodemographic factors. HL dimensions allowed to differentiate health-related factors.

RESUMO Objetivo: investigar o reconhecimento auditivo da fala intermitente em função de diferentes taxas de modulação e em função da idade. Métodos: participaram do estudo vinte jovens, vinte adultos de meia idade, e dezesseis idosos, todos com limiares auditivos iguais ou menores que 25 dB NA até a frequência de 4000 Hz. Os participantes foram submetidos a testes de reconhecimento da fala intermitente apresentada em três condições de modulação: 4 Hz, 10 Hz e 64 Hz. Percentuais de acerto foram comparados entre grupos etários e taxas de modulação. Para a investigação do efeito da taxa de modulação foi realizada ANOVA e testes Post Hoc, enquanto para a investigação do efeito da idade, utilizou-se o modelo de regressão linear misto (p<0,001). Resultados: sobre o efeito da idade, os dados mostram diferença significante entre jovens e idosos, e entre adultos de meia idade e idosos. Sobre o efeito da taxa de modulação, os índices de acerto da taxa mais lenta (4Hz) foram significantemente menores nos três grupos etários. Conclusão: foi verificado um efeito da idade no reconhecimento da fala intermitente: idosos apresentaram maior dificuldade. Percebeu-se também um efeito de taxa de modulação nos três grupos etários: quanto maior a taxa, melhor o desempenho.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to investigate the auditory recognition of intermittent speech in relation to different modulation rates and ages. Methods: 20 young people, 20 middle-aged adults, and 16 older adults, all of them with auditory thresholds equal to or lower than 25 dB HL up to the frequency of 4000 Hz. The participants were submitted to intermittent speech recognition tests presented in three modulation conditions: 4 Hz, 10 Hz, and 64 Hz. The percentages of correct answers were compared between age groups and modulation rates. ANOVA and post hoc tests were conducted to investigate the modulation rate effect, and the mixed linear regression model (p < 0.001). Results: regarding the age effect, the data showed a significant difference between young people and older adults, and between middle-aged and older adults. As for the modulation rate effect, the indexes of correct answers were significantly lower at the slower rate (4 Hz) in the three age groups. Conclusion: an age effect was verified on intermittent speech recognition: older adults have greater difficulty. A modulation rate effect was also noticed in the three age groups: the higher the rate, the better the performance.

Resumo Objetivo: Validar o instrumento de avaliação do letramento em saúde Health Literacy Questionnaire para o português brasileiro. Métodos: Para a adaptação transcultural e validação das propriedades psicométricas da versão brasileira do Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ-Br), foi utilizado o protocolo estabelecido pelos autores do instrumento original. O HLQ-Br foi respondido por 794 adultos de três regiões do Brasil. A Análise Fatorial Confirmatória foi realizada por meio do Diagonally Weighted Least Squares e a confiabilidade foi verificada pelos indicadores alfa de Cronbach e confiabilidade composta. Resultados: A avaliação cognitiva do HLQ-Br mostrou que os itens do instrumento foram facilmente compreendidos pelos participantes. A análise confirmatória apresentou índices de ajuste satisfatórios: χ2WLSMV (866 GL) = 1698,53, p<0,0001; CFI = 0,978; TLI = 0,976 e RMSEA = 0,035 [0,032; 0,037, IC de 90%]. O alfa de Cronbach e confiabilidade composta foram >0,76 em oito das nove escalas do instrumento. Conclusão: O HLQ-Br apresentou equivalência com a versão original e propriedades psicométricas satisfatórias. Pode ser aplicado para avaliar o letramento em saúde da população brasileira na prática clínica, ensino e pesquisa. O uso do HLQ-Br nas práticas de saúde pode auxiliar a incorporar o letramento em saúde nas práticas de saúde no Brasil.

Abstract Objective: To validate the health literacy assessment instrument Health Literacy Questionnaire to Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: We used the protocol established by the original authors of the instrument for transcultural adaptation and validation of the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ-Br). The HLQ-Br was answered by 794 adults from three regions of Brazil. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was performed by means of the Diagonally Weighted Least Squares and reliability was verified by Cronbach’s Alpha and Composite Reliability indicators. Results: Cognitive evaluation of the HLQ-Br showed that the items of the instrument were easily understood by the participants. The confirmatory analysis presented satisfactory fit indices: χ2WLSMV (866 df) = 1698.53, p <0.0001; CFI = 0.978; TLI = 0.976, and RMSEA = 0.035 [0.032; 0.037, 90%CI]. Cronbach’s Alpha and Composite Reliability > 0.76 on eight of the nine scales of the instrument. Conclusion: The HLQ-Br presented equivalence to the original version and satisfactory psychometric properties. It can be applied in the evaluation of Brazilian population HL in clinical practice, teaching and research. The use of HLQ-Br in health practices can aid in the incorporation of health literacy into health care practices in Brazil.

El HLQ-Br fue respondido por 794 adultos de tres regiones de Brasil. El análisis factorial confirmatorio fue realizado mediante el Diagonally Weighted Least Squares y la fiabilidad fue verificada por el indicador alfa de Cronbach y fiabilidad compuesta. Resultados: La evaluación cognitiva del HLQ-Br demostró que los ítems del instrumento fueron fácilmente comprendidos por los participantes. El análisis confirmatorio presentó índices de ajustes satisfactorios: χ2WLSMV (866 GL) = 1698,53, p<0,0001; CFI = 0,978; TLI = 0,976 y RMSEA = 0,035 [0,032; 0,037, IC de 90%]. El uso del HLQ-Br en las prácticas de salud puede ayudar a incorporar la instrucción en salud en las prácticas sanitarias en Brasil.

RESUMO OBJETIVO O objetivo foi analisar o papel da Literacia em Saúde (LS) como fator associado às perdas dentárias entre usuários do Sistema Único de Saúde com doenças crônicas não transmissíveis. MÉTODOS O estudo transversal e analítico foi conduzido com usuários adultos e idosos selecionados em dez Unidades de Saúde da Família sorteadas, em Piracicaba – SP, Brasil. Foi aplicado um questionário com dados sociodemográficos (sexo, idade, cor da pele e escolaridade), comportamentais (escovação e uso de fio dental), determinantes em saúde (tipo e frequência de uso de serviço de saúde médico e odontológico) e clínica (dor). As condições bucais foram coletadas por exame intrabucal do biofilme dental visível e Índice Pediodontal Comunitário. As condições clínicas sistêmicas (glicemia, hemoglobina glicada e pressóricas) foram extraídas dos prontuários. A variável explanatória foi a LS (baixa, média e alta), medida pelo Health Literacy Scale (HLS-14). RESULTADOS O desfecho foi à perda dentária medida pelo Índice de dentes permanentes cariados, perdidos e obturados. Foi realizada regressão logística com uso de um modelo conceitual para a LS (p < 0,05). Para os 238 indivíduos, a média de idade foi 62,7 anos (± 10,55). A perda dentária esteve associada à LS nos modelos de regressão ajustados por tipo de serviço odontológico, frequência odontológica e uso de fio dental. No modelo final, a perda dentária teve como fatores associados a maior idade (OR = 1,12; IC95% 1,07–1,17), menor escolaridade (OR = 3,43; IC95% 1,17–10,10), ao uso irregular de fio dental (OR = 4,58; IC95% 1,75–7,31), uso irregular do serviço odontológico (OR = 2,60; IC95% 1,32–5,12), bolsa periodontal (> 4mm) (OR = 0,31; IC95% 0,01–0,08), ter biofilme dental visível (OR = 7,23; IC95% 3,19–16,41) e maior índice de glicemia (OR = 1,98; IC95% 1,00–3,92). CONCLUSÕES A perda dentária esteve associada à LS quando ajustada por comportamentos em saúde, a partir da inclusão das variáveis sociodemográficas e condições clínicas ela perdeu a significância. No modelo final, comportamentos, determinantes em saúde e condições clínicas foram indicadores de risco da perda dentária, demonstrando a multifatorialidade envolvida neste fenômeno.

Mouth conditions were collected by intraoral examination of visible dental biofilm and community Pediodontal Index. The systemic clinical conditions (blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin and blood pressure) were extracted from the medical records. The explanatory variable was HL (low, medium and high), measured with the Health Literacy Scale (HLS-14). RESULTS The outcome was tooth loss measured by the index of decayed, missing and filled teeth. Logistic regression was performed using a conceptual model for HL (p < 0.05). For the 238 subjects, the mean age was 62.7 years (± 10.55). Tooth loss was associated with HL in regression models adjusted by type of dental service, dental frequency, and dental floss. In the final model, the factors associated with tooth loss are older age (OR = 1,12; 95%CI: 1,07–1,17), a lower education (OR = 3,43; 95%CI: 1,17–10,10), irregular use of dental floss (OR = 4,58; 95%CI: 1.75 in–7,31), irregular use of dental services (n = 2,60; 95% 1,32–5,12), periodontal pocket (> 4 mm) (n = 0,31; 95%CI: 0,01–0,08), having visible dental biofilm (OR = 7,23; 95%CI: 3,19–16,41) and a higher level of blood sugar (glucose) (n = 1,98; 95%CI: 1.00–3,92). CONCLUSIONS tooth loss was associated with HL when adjusted by health behaviors; when sociodemographic variables and clinical conditions were included, it was less significant. In the final model, behaviors, determinants in health and clinical conditions were risk indicators of tooth loss, showing the multifactorial nature of this phenomenon.

Marco contextual: La alfabetización en salud (AS) es un concepto que se puede analizar en tres ámbitos: promoción de la salud, prevención de la enfermedad y asistencia sanitaria. Objetivo: Describir el nivel de AS de un grupo de usuarios con hipertensión y diabetes en una región del norte de Portugal. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo-exploratorio transversal. Muestra de conveniencia de 401 usuarios de un agrupamiento de centros de salud en la región norte de Portugal. Los datos se recogieron, después de obtener el consentimiento informado de los usuarios, a través de una encuesta con la escala de evaluación de AS, la European Health Literacy Survey (HLS-EU-PT), traducida y validada para Portugal. Se utilizaron técnicas de estadística descriptiva e inferencial, para lo cual se recurrió al software IBM SPSS Statistics, versión 24. Resultados: Los usuarios presentaron un nivel inadecuado o problemático de AS y consideraron al médico y al enfermero como los profesionales que pueden mejorar su nivel de AS. Conclusión: Los niveles bajos de AS son un problema para la gestión de la salud, por lo que es necesario apostar por una estrategia para aumentar la AS en los pacientes con enfermedades crónicas.

Enquadramento: A literacia em saúde (LS) é um conceito que pode ser analisado em 3 domínios: promoção da saúde, prevenção da doença e cuidados de saúde. Objetivo: Descrever o nível de LS de um grupo de utentes com hipertensão arterial e diabetes de uma região do norte de Portugal. Metodologia: Estudo descritivo-exploratório transversal. Amostra de conveniência com 401 utentes de um agrupamento de centros de saúde da região norte de Portugal. Recolheram-se dados após consentimento informado dos utentes, através de um inquérito com a escala de avaliação de LS, European Health Literacy Survey (HLS-EU-PT), traduzida e validada para Portugal. Utilizaram-se técnicas da estatística descritiva e inferencial, com recurso ao software IBM SPSS Statistics, versão 24. Resultados: Os utentes apresentavam um nível inadequado ou problemático de LS e consideraram o médico e o enfermeiro como os profissionais que podem melhorar o seu nível de LS. Conclusão: Níveis baixos de LS são um problema para a gestão em saúde, pelo que urge apostar numa estratégia para aumentar a LS nos utentes com doenças crónicas.

Background: Health Literacy (HL) is a concept that can be analyzed in 3 domains: health promotion, disease prevention and health care. Objective: Describe HL level of a group of patients with hypertension and diabetes in a northern region of Portugal. Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive-exploratory study. Sample of convenience, with 401 users of a cluster of health centers in the northern region of Portugal. Data were collected after informed consent of the users, through a survey with the LS assessment scale European Health Literacy Survey (HLS-EU-PT), translated and validated into Portuguese. Descriptive and inferential statistics techniques were used, using SPSS, version 24. Results: Users presented an inadequate or problematic level of HL. These considered the doctor and the nurse as the professionals who can improve their HL level. Conclusion: Low HL level is a problem for health management, it is important to focus on a strategy to increase HL in chronic disease patients.

RESUMO Introdução: O treinamento com exercício resistido (ER) é amplamente recomendado para aumento de força e massa muscular em idosos. O ER também é um possível estímulo para melhorar funções cognitivas (FC), mas o melhor protocolo para esse fim não é conhecido. Objetivo: Comparar os efeitos de diferentes protocolos de ER sobre a FC de um mesmo grupo de indivíduos. Métodos: Vinte e quarto idosos foram randomizados (cross-over) em grupo controle (CON) e grupos protocolos de ER para membros inferiores com carga alta (CA - 80% 1RM), carga baixa (CB - 30% 1RM) e carga baixa com restrição de fluxo sanguíneo (CB-RFS - 30% 1RM e 50% RFS). Para a avaliação de FC, os participantes realizaram o teste de Stroop antes e depois de cada protocolo de ER. Resultados: A redução do tempo de resposta para o estímulo neutro de Stroop foi maior após o CB (tamanho de efeito [TE] = -0,92) comparado ao CON (TE = -0,18) e CA (TE = -0,03), mas não foi diferente de CB-RFS (TE = -0,24). A redução do tempo de resposta foi associada à redução da modulação parassimpática e ao aumento de débito cardíaco em todos os protocolos. Conclusões: CB foi o protocolo de ER mais eficiente para aumentar a FC em idosos e identificou-se um efeito benéfico em potencial do CB-RFS sobre a FC (não significante). Desta forma, o exercício resistido de CB parece estimular a melhora aguda da função cognitiva em idosos saudáveis, provavelmente devido à alteração ideal da modulação autonômica induzida pelo exercício. ABSTRACT Introduction: Resistance exercise (RE) training is widely recommended for increasing muscle strength and mass in older adults. RE is also a potential stimulus to improve cognitive functions (CF), but the best protocol for this purpose is unknown. Objective: To compare the effects of different RE protocols on CF in the same group of individuals. Methods: Twenty-four older adults were randomized (cross over) to control (CON) and lower limb RE protocols with high load (HL - 80% of 1RM), low load (LL - 30% of 1RM) and LL with blood flow restriction (LL-BFR - 30% of 1RM and 50% BFR). For CF assessment, participants underwent the Stroop test before and after each RE protocol. Results: Reduction in response time for Stroop neutral stimuli was greater after LL (effect size (ES) = -0.92) compared to CON (ES = -0.18) and HL (ES = -0.03), but was not different from LL-BFR (ES = -0.24). The reduced response time was associated with reduced parasympathetic modulation and increased cardiac output across protocols. Conclusion: LL was the most effective RE protocol to improve CF of older adults and a potential beneficial effect of LL-BFR on CF (non-significant) was identified. Therefore, LL resistance exercise appears to stimulate acute cognitive improvements in healthy older adults, probably through exercise-induced optimal autonomic modulation changes. RESUMEN Introducción: El entrenamiento con ejercicio resistido (ER) es ampliamente recomendado para aumento de fuerza y masa muscular en ancianos. El ER también es un posible estímulo para mejorar las funciones cognitivas (FC), pero el mejor protocolo para este fin no es conocido. Objetivo: Comparar los efectos de diferentes protocolos de ER sobre la FC de un mismo grupo de individuos. Métodos: Veinte y cuatro ancianos fueron aleatorizados (cross-over) en grupo control (CON) y grupos protocolos de ER para extremidades inferiores con carga alta (CA - 80% 1RM), carga baja (CB - 30% 1RM) y carga baja con restricción de flujo sanguíneo (CB-RFS - 30% 1RM y 50% RFS). Para la evaluación de FC, los participantes realizaron el test de Stroop antes y después de cada protocolo de ER. Resultados: La reducción del tiempo de respuesta para el estímulo neutro de Stroop fue mayor después del CB (tamaño de efecto [TE] = -0,92) comparado al CON (TE = -0,18) y CA (TE = -0,03), pero no fue diferente de CB-RFS (TE = -0,24). La reducción del tiempo de respuesta fue asociada a la reducción de la modulación parasimpática y al aumento del gasto cardiaco en todos los protocolos. Conclusiones: CB fue el protocolo de ER más eficiente para aumentar la FC en ancianos y se identificó un efecto beneficioso potencial del CB-RFS sobre la FC (no significativo). De esta forma, el ejercicio resistido de CB parece estimular la mejora aguda de la función cognitiva en ancianos sanos, probablemente debido a la alteración ideal de la modulación autonómica inducida por el ejercicio. Resumo Fundamentos: Diferentes tipos de dietas hiperlipídicas e/ou hipercalóricas têm sido usados para induzir obesidade em roedores. No entanto, poucos estudos relataram os efeitos da obesidade induzida por dieta hiperlipídica em sua fase inicial sobre a remodelação cardíaca funcional e estrutural. Objetivo: Caracterizar o momento inicial da obesidade e investigar parâmetros metabólicos e cardíacos. Além disso, analisar o papel do trânsito de Ca+2 em curtos períodos de exposição à obesidade. Métodos: Ratos Wistar com idade de 30 dias foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos (n = 19 em cada grupo): controle (C, dieta padrão) e dieta hiperlipídica (HL, dieta rica em gordura insaturada). O momento inicial da obesidade foi definido por medidas semanais do peso corporal, complementadas pelo índice de adiposidade (IA). A remodelação cardíaca foi avaliada por análise morfológica, histológica, ecocardiográfica e funcional dos músculos papilares. Proteínas envolvidas no trânsito de Ca2+ foram determinadas por Western Blot. Resultados: O momento inicial da obesidade ocorreu na terceira semana. Em comparação aos ratos C, os animais HL apresentaram maior peso corporal final (4%), gordura corporal (20%), IA (14,5%), níveis de insulina (39,7%), leptina (62,4%) e lipoproteína de baixa densidade (15,5%), mas não apresentaram alterações na pressão sistólica. A avaliação ecocardiográfica não mostrou alterações nos parâmetros cardíacos. No grupo HL, observou-se um aumento no +dT/dt (C: 52,6 ± 9,0 g/mm2/s e HL: 68,0 ± 17,0 g/mm2/s; p < 0,05) muscular. Além disso, não houve alterações na expressão cardíaca de proteínas envolvidas no trânsito de Ca2+. Conclusão: O momento inicial da obesidade promove alterações nos perfis hormonais e lipídicos sem causar danos cardíacos ou mudanças no trânsito de Ca2+.

Abstract Background: Different types of high-fat and/or high-energy diets have been used to induce obesity in rodents. However, few studies have reported on the effects observed at the initial stage of obesity induced by high-fat feeding on cardiac functional and structural remodelling. Objective: To characterize the initial moment of obesity and investigate both metabolic and cardiac parameters. In addition, the role of Ca2+ handling in short-term exposure to obesity was verified. Methods: Thirty-day-old male Wistar rats were randomized into two groups (n = 19 each): control (C; standard diet) and high-fat diet (HF, unsaturated high-fat diet). The initial moment of obesity was defined by weekly measurement of body weight (BW) complemented by adiposity index (AI). Cardiac remodelling was assessed by morphological, histological, echocardiographic and papillary muscle analysis. Ca2+ handling proteins were determined by Western Blot. Results: The initial moment of obesity occurred at the 3rd week. Compared with C rats, the HF rats had higher final BW (4%), body fat (20%), AI (14.5%), insulin levels (39.7%), leptin (62.4%) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (15.5%) but did not exhibit alterations in systolic blood pressure. Echocardiographic evaluation did not show alterations in cardiac parameters. In the HF group, muscles were observed to increase their +dT/dt (C: 52.6 ± 9.0 g/mm2/s and HF: 68.0 ± 17.0 g/mm2/s; p < 0.05). In addition, there was no changes in the cardiac expression of Ca2+ handling proteins. Conclusion: The initial moment of obesity promotes alterations to hormonal and lipid profiles without cardiac damage or changes in Ca2+ handling.

Abstract Introduction Usher syndrome (US) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hearing loss and progressive visual impairment. Some deaf Usher syndrome patients learn to communicate using sign language. During adolescence, as they start losing vision, they are usually referred to cochlear implantation as a salvage for their new condition. Is a late implantation beneficial to these children? Objective The objective of this study is to describe the outcomes of US patients who received cochlear implants at a later age. Methods This is a retrospective study of ten patients diagnosed with US1. We collected pure-tone thresholds and speech perception tests from pre and one-year post implant. Results Average age at implantation was 18.9 years (5-49). Aided average thresholds were 103 dB HL and 35 dB HL pre and one-year post implant, respectively. Speech perception was only possible to bemeasured in four patients preoperatively, who scored 13.3; 26.67; 46% vowels and 56% 4-choice. All patients except one had some kind of communication. Two were bilingual. After one year of using the device, seven patients were able to perform the speech tests (from four-choice to close set sentences) and three patients abandoned the use of the implant. Conclusion We observed that detection of sounds can be achieved with late implantation, but speech recognition is only possible in patients with previous hearing stimulation, since it depends on the development of hearing skills and the maturation of the auditory pathways.

Abstract Introduction The preservation of residual hearing is currently an important challenge for cochlear implant surgeries. Indeed, if patients exhibit functional hearing after cochlear implantation, they can benefit from the combination of acoustical stimulation, usually in the low-frequencies and electrical stimulation in the high-frequencies. This combined mode of stimulation has proven to be beneficial both in terms of speech perception and of sound quality. Finding the right procedures for conducting softsurgeries and designing electrode arrays dedicated to hearing preservation is an open issue. Objective The objective of this study is to evaluate the combination of a soft-surgery procedure implicating round-window insertion and the use of dexamethasone and hyaluronic acid during surgery, with the use of a specifically designed straight soft electrode array, on hearing preservation in patients with functional hearing in the low frequencies. Methods This pre-clinical trial was conducted on seven patients with residual hearing in the low frequencies. The surgical method used employed a round window insertion and the use of topical dexamethasone. Results The soft-surgery protocol could be successfully followed in five patients. In this group, the average hearing threshold shift compared with pre-operative values was of 18.7 þ/ 16.1 dB HL up to 500 Hz and 15.7 þ/ 15.1 up to 1 kHz, demonstrating satisfying levels of hearing preservation. Conclusion We were able to demonstrate the possibility of preserving residual hearing in most of the patients using the EVO electrode. Significant residual hearing preservation levels were was obtained when a soft surgical approach involving round window insertion, dexamethasone and hyaluronic use during the surgery.

As glândulas sudoríparas são importantes na termorregulação dos bovinos em ambiente quente, uma vez que auxiliam na dissipação de calor por evaporação. O estudo da histologia da glândula é importante para definir seu potencial de secreção e, consequentemente, a capacidade de sudação e eliminação de calor. Neste estudo, objetivou-se determinar por histomorfometria a altura do epitélio glandular, a profundidade da glândula, o comprimento da porção glandular e o número de glândulas sudoríparas por cm2 de três faixas etárias de bovinos da raça Nelore. Foram utilizadas 30 fêmeas, divididas igualmente, em bezerras, novilhas e vacas. Os cortes histológicos foram obtidos e analisados por imagens digitalizadas, no microscópio Olympus Triocular BX40, acoplado a câmera Oly-200, ligados a um computador. As imagens foram obtidas com microscópio em objetivas de 2x, 4x, 10x e 40x. As mensurações foram realizadas pelo programa HL Image 97. Analisaram-se a altura do epitélio glandular, a profundidade da glândula, o comprimento da porção glandular e a densidade por cm2. Bezerras apresentaram maior altura do epitélio glandular que novilhas (P = 0,0024), e vacas (P = 0,0191). A profundidade da glândula não foi influenciada pela idade. Vacas apresentaram maior comprimento da porção secretora que novilhas (P = 0,0379) e bezerras (P = 0,0077). Novilhas apresentaram maior número de glândulas sudoríparas por cm2 de pele que vacas (P = 0,023). Nos bovinos, o aumento da idade reduz a altura do epitélio glandular, aumenta o comprimento da porção secretora e diminui a densidade, porém não altera a profundidade das glândulas sudoríparas

The sweat glands are important in thermoregulation of cattle in a warm environment as they help dissipate heat through evaporation. Studies on gland histology are important to define its secretion potential and the capacity of perspiration and heat removal. The objective of this study was to determine, by histomorphometry, glandular epithelium height, the depth of the gland, length of the glandular portion and number of glands per cm2 of the sweat glands of the three age groups of Nellore cattle. Thirty females were used in this study. They were equally divided into calves, heifers and cows. Histological sections were obtained and analyzed by digital images in Trinocular BX40 Olympus microscope coupled to an Oly - 200 camera, connected to a computer. The images were obtained with microscope with 2x, 4x, 10x and 40x magnification objectives. The measurements were performed using HL Image 97 program. The height of glandular epithelium, depth of the glands, length and density of the glandular portion per cm2 , were all analyzed. The calves showed greater height of the glandular epithelium than heifers (P = 0.0024), and cows (P = 0.0191). The depth of the gland was not influenced by age. Cows had higher length of secretory portion than heifers (P = 0.0379) and calves (P = 0.0077). Heifers had a greater number of sweat glands per cm2 of skin than cows (P = 0.023). In cattle, the height of glandular epithelium and the density decreases as animals get older. On the other hand, the length of the secretor portion increases but with no changes in the depth of the sweat glands

INTRODUÇÃO: Medicamentos endodônticos apresentam componentes tóxicos que provocam algum grau de reação inflamatória.OBJETIVO: Este estudo avaliou o efeito da laserterapia na resposta inflamatória causada por medicações intracanais, em tecido subcutâneo de ratos, por meio da análise quantitativa de mastócitos.MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Tubos de polietileno contendo as medicações foram implantados no dorso de 60 ratos, distribuídos em seis grupos: HS (pasta de hidróxido de cálcio P.A.); HL (pasta de hidróxido de cálcio P.A. e laserterapia); HPS (pasta de hidróxido de cálcio P.A. com paramonoclorofenol canforado); HPL (pasta de hidróxido de cálcio P.A. com paramonoclorofenol canforado e laserterapia); IS (iodofórmio e soro fisiológico) e IL (iodofórmio, soro fisiológico e laserterapia). Os animais foram eutanasiados oito e quinze dias após a cirurgia, as peças cirúrgicas foram removidas, processadas para inclusão em parafina e os cortes histológicos corados em Azul de Toluidina 0.2%, para quantificação dos mastócitos. A análise de variância (ANOVA) e o teste de Tukey post hoc foram aplicados para determinar diferenças significativas entre os grupos quanto ao número de mastócitos (p<0.05).RESULTADO: Nos grupos HL, HPL e IL houve uma diminuição de mastócitos em ambos os períodos experimentais em relação aos grupos HS, HPS e IS, porém não se observou diferença estatística significativa entre o grupo HPS e o HPL aos oito dias.CONCLUSÃO: A laserterapia foi eficaz em modular a intensidade da resposta inflamatória induzida pelos medicamentos endodônticos a partir da redução significativa na quantidade de mastócitos.

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic medications contain toxic components that cause varying degrees of inflammation.OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effect of laser therapy on the inflammatory response induced by intracanal medications implanted into the subcutaneous tissue of rats using a quantitative analysis of mast cells.MATERIAL AND METHOD: Polyethylene tubes containing the medications were implanted in the dorsum of 60 rats divided into six groups, including HS (P.A. calcium hydroxide paste), HL (P.A. calcium hydroxide paste and laser therapy), HPS (P.A. calcium hydroxide paste with camphorated paramonochlorophenol), HPL (P.A. calcium hydroxide paste with camphorated paramonochlorophenol and laser therapy), IS (iodoform with saline) and IL (iodoform with saline and laser therapy). The animals were euthanized eight or fifteen days after surgery, and samples were removed and embedded in paraffin. Histological sections were stained with 0.2% toluidine blue for the quantification of mast cells. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post-hoc test were applied to determine significant differences in the number of mast cells between groups (p<0.05).RESULT: There was a decrease in mast cells for the HL, HPL and IL groups when compared with the HS, HPS and IS groups at both time points. There was no statistically significant difference between the HPS and HPL groups at the eight-day time point.CONCLUSION: Laser therapy was effective at modulating the inflammatory response induced by endodontic medications by significantly reducing the number of mast cells.

Objetivo Caracterizar o sistema auditivo periférico de indivíduos com síndrome de Down, por meio da audiometria convencional e de altas frequências. Métodos Estudo do tipo transversal e observacional. Participaram 15 indivíduos com síndrome de Down, de ambos os gêneros, entre 7 e 15 anos de idade. Foram realizados os seguintes procedimentos: Meatoscopia, Timpanometria com pesquisa do reflexo acústico ipsilateral e contralateral, Audiometria Tonal, Audiometria Vocal e Audiometria de Altas Frequências. Resultados Houve predomínio de perda auditiva condutiva de grau leve, em uma ou ambas as orelhas. As médias dos limiares auditivos para a audiometria convencional ficaram abaixo de 20 dBNA e, para a audiometria de altas frequências, ficaram entre 20 e 40 dBNA. O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson revelou correlação moderada positiva, entre os limiares de 9 a 14 kHz e a idade. Conclusão De forma geral, não foram observadas diferenças significativas, quando comparadas as orelhas direita e esquerda de indivíduos com síndrome de Down, na audiometria tonal, imitanciometria e logoaudiometria. A maioria das crianças apresentou alteração de orelha média e perda auditiva condutiva. A audiometria de altas frequências sugere o início de prejuízo da função coclear, que pode estar associado às otites médias frequentes e/ou à degeneração coclear precoce.

Purpose This study sought to characterize the peripheral auditory system of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) using conventional and high-frequency audiometry. Methods We performed a cross-sectional and observational study. Fifteen individuals with DS, who were of both genders and between 7 and 15 years of age, participated in this study. The following procedures were performed: otoscopy, tympanometry with ipsilateral and contralateral acoustic reflex, pure-tone audiometry, vocal audiometry and high-frequency audiometry. Results There was a predominance of mild conductive hearing loss in one or both ears. The mean hearing thresholds for conventional audiometry were below 20 dB HL and between 20 and 40 dB HL for high-frequency audiometry. The Pearson correlation coefficient indicated a moderate positive correlation between the 9-14 kHz thresholds and age. Conclusion Overall, no significant differences were observed when comparing the right and left ears of individuals with DS, in regards to pure-tone audiometry, immittance testing and speech audiometry. Most children showed middle ear abnormalities and conductive hearing loss. Moreover, high-frequency audiometry suggested the onset of impaired cochlear function, which may be associated with frequent otitis media episodes and/or early cochlear degeneration.
