ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to produce and characterize biochar from sugarcane straw, as well as to investigate possible phytotoxic effects on the germination of cotton, maize, and soybean. To this end, the biochar was produced in a double-drum oven and characterized by different techniques. The germination trials were conducted in vitro, with biochar doses varying between 0 and 100 t/ha. The biochar was obtained with a yield of 40%, pH equal to 9.10, electrical conductivity of 2.22 dS/m and specific surface area of 20.3 m2/g. The elemental analysis showed H/C and O/C atomic ratios of 0.41 and 0.21, respectively. The FTIR showed the presence of C=C groups, while SEM/EDS showed a honeycomb porous structure and nutrients such as Mg, K and Ca. The germination test classified the biochar as a phytonutrient for corn and showed no phytotoxicity for soybeans. On the other hand, for cotton, the highest doses (50 and 100 t/ha) caused phytotoxicity. The results of this work meet the global demands for green techniques. Biochar made from sugarcane straw is a promising technology to improve the infertility of poor soils and manage carbon sequestration.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi produzir e caracterizar o biocarvão a partir da palha de cana-de-açúcar, bem como investigar possíveis efeitos fitotóxicos às germinações de algodão, milho e soja. Para tanto, o biocarvão foi produzido em forno de duplo tambor e caracterizado por diferentes técnicas. Os ensaios de germinação foram conduzidos in vitro, com doses de biocarvão variando entre 0 e 100 t/ha. O biocarvão foi obtido com rendimento de 40%, pH igual a 9,10, condutividade elétrica de 2,22 dS/m e área superficial específica de 20,3 m2/g. A análise elementar mostrou razões atômicas H/C e O/C de 0,41 e 0,21, respectivamente. A FTIR mostrou a presença de grupos C=C, enquanto a MEV/EDS mostrou estrutura porosa tipo favo de mel e nutrientes, como o Mg, K e Ca. O ensaio de germinação classificou o biocarvão como fitoestimulante para o milho e mostrou ausência de fitotoxicidade para soja. Por outro lado, para o algodão, as doses mais elevadas (50 e 100 t/ha) causaram fitotoxicidade. Os resultados deste trabalho vêm ao encontro das demandas globais por técnicas verdes. O biocarvão feito da palha de cana-de-açúcar é uma tecnologia promissora para melhorar a infertilidade de solos pobres e gerir o sequestro de carbono.

Abstract The objective of this work is to investigate the conversion of spent coffee grounds (SCG) into biochar (BSC) and the ecotoxicological effects of the product obtained. The SCG and BSC were characterized by characterized by different techniques (TGA/DTG, FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, and EDXRF). Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) was used to characterize the aqueous extract of BSC. The inhibitory effect on lettuce (Lactuca sativa) germination was investigated. Besides, antimicrobial activity evaluation trials were conducted with Azospirillum brasilense and Trichoderma spp. The results showed that in the BSC production process, the extractives and lignocellulosic components in the SCG were partly decomposed. Tests conducted with microorganisms did not reveal any toxic effect of BSC. However, high phytotoxicity against lettuce was recorded for rate 100 t/ha of BSC. This effect was associated with the presence of carboxylic acids identified by 1H NMR in the BSC extract aqueous.

RESUMO A cachaça é a segunda bebida alcoólica mais consumida no Brasil, obtida pelo destilado do vinho a partir do mosto fermentado de cana-de-açúcar com teor alcoólico de 38 a 48% (v/v) a 20 ºC. A qualidade da bebida é afetada pela matéria-prima utilizada, tratamento do caldo, pelo tipo de fermento e processo de destilação. Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho de dois tipos de fermento (selecionado e prensado) e o prévio tratamento físico-químico do caldo de cana para a qualidade da cachaça. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com 9 repetições. O tratamento primário representado pelo mosto (obtido de caldo clarificado e não clarificado) e o secundário pelos tipos de fermento (CA-11 e prensado biológico). Avaliou-se o comportamento microbiológico da levedura em fermentação, a composição química do vinho e da cachaça. A utilização de cepas selecionadas e o prévio tratamento do caldo possibilitou um melhor desempenho das leveduras fermentadoras, resultando em destilados com padrões físico-químicos adequados e de qualidade.

ABSTRACT Cachaça is the second most consumed alcoholic beverage in Brazil, obtained by distilling wine from fermented sugarcane must, and has an alcohol content of 38 to 48% (v/v) at 20 ºC. The quality of the drink is affected by the raw material used, the treatment of the juice, the type of yeast and the distillation process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of two types of yeast (selected and pressed) and the prior physical and chemical treatment of the sugarcane juice on the quality of the cachaça. The experimental design was completely randomised with 9 replications. The primary treatment was represented by the must (obtained from clarified and non-clarified juice) and the secondary treatment by the types of yeast (CA-11 and pressed biological). The microbiological behaviour of the yeast during fermentation was evaluated together with the chemical composition of the wine and cachaça. The use of selected strains and the prior treatment of the juice resulted in better performance of the fermenting yeasts, producing distillates of suitable physical and chemical standards and quality.

RESUMO A cachaça é a aguardente produzida a partir da destilação do fermentado de caldo de cana. Atualmente destaca-se por ser a segunda bebida alcoólica mais consumida no Brasil e a terceira destilada no mundo. Diversos fatores afetam negativamente a cadeia produtiva, entre eles o tratamento do caldo e a levedura utilizada. Neste sentido, o objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a influência do tipo de fermento e o tratamento do caldo sobre a qualidade do destilado. O experimento foi realizado na safra 2014/2015, utilizando-se a variedade SP83-2847. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com parcelas subdivididas, com 9 repetições. As parcelas foram constituídas pelo modo de tratamento do caldo (caldo clarificado e não clarificado) e as subparcelas os tipos de fermento (Natural e CA-11). Foram determinadas características químicas do mosto, como Sólidos Solúveis Totais (SST), Compostos Fenólicos Totais (CFT), Açúcares Redutores Totais (ART) e Acidez Total. No processo fermentativo avaliou-se a viabilidade das células e brotos e o índice de brotamentos. No vinho determinou-se o SST, ARRT, pH, acidez total, teor alcoólico, glicerol e eficiência fermentativa. Determinou-se a composição das cachaças através da quantificação de aldeídos totais, ésteres totais, metanol, acroleína, carbamato de etila, furfural, acidez volátil e coeficiente de congêneres. Analisou-se ainda condutividade elétrica, turbidez e pH, sendo os componentes secundários determinados por cromatografia gasosa. O tratamento prévio do caldo resultou em mosto de condições ideais para a levedura. A levedura CA-11 apresentou maiores teores de viabilidade celular. A associação entre tratamento de caldo e uso de fermento selecionado resulta em cachaça de composição mais equilibrada.

ABSTRACT Cachaça is the spirit produced from the distillation of fermented sugarcane juice. It is currently the second most consumed alcoholic beverage in Brazil, and the third most-distilled drink in the world. Several factors negatively affect the production chain, including treatment of the juice and the yeast employed. The aim of this study therefore, was to evaluate the influence of the type of yeast and treatment on the quality of the distillate. The experiment was carried out during the 2014/2015 season, using the SP83-2847 variety of sugarcane. The experimental design was completely randomised into split lots with nine replications. The lots consisted of the type of treatment (clarified and non-clarified juice), and the sub-lots, of the types of yeast (Natural and CA-11). Chemical characteristics of the must were determined, such as Total Soluble Solids (TSS), Total Phenolic Compounds (CFT), Total Reducing Sugars (ART) and Total Acidity. During the fermentation process, the viability of the cells and shoots, and the sprouting index were evaluated. The SST, ARRT, pH, total acidity, alcohol content, glycerol and fermentation efficiency were determined in the sugarcane must. The composition of the cachaças was determined by quantification of total aldehydes, total esters, methanol, acrolein, ethyl carbamate, furfural, volatile acidity and congener coefficient. Electrical conductivity, turbidity and pH were also analysed, secondary components being determined by gas chromatography. Pre-treatment of the juice resulted in ideal conditions for the yeast. The CA-11 yeast showed higher levels of cell viability. The interaction between treatment and selected yeast, results in a cachaça of a more-balanced composition.
