Abstract Introduction Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is the fourth most prevalent mental disorder and is a disabling condition. OCD is associated with anatomical and functional changes in the brain, in addition to dysfunctional cognitions. The treatments of choice are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and exposure and response prevention (ERP). Trial-based cognitive therapy (TBCT) is a recent and empirically validated psychotherapy with a focus on restructuring dysfunctional negative core beliefs (CBs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of TBCT relative to ERP for treatment of OCD. Methods A randomized, single-blind clinical trial was conducted, randomizing 26 patients for individual treatment with TBCT (n = 12) or ERP (n = 14). The groups were evaluated at baseline, at the end of 3 months (12 sessions), and at 3, 6, and 12-month follow-ups. Results Both approaches reduced the severity of symptoms with large effect sizes. These results were maintained at the 12-month follow-up assessment. Conclusion TBCT may be a valid and promising treatment for this disorder.

ABSTRACT Background: This research addresses two questions: (1) how El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) affects climate variability and how it influences dengue transmission in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (MRR), and (2) whether the epidemic in MRR municipalities has any connection and synchronicity. Methods: Wavelet analysis and cross-correlation were applied to characterize seasonality, multiyear cycles, and relative delays between the series. This study was developed into two distinct periods. Initially, we performed periodic dengue incidence and intercity epidemic synchronism analyses from 2001 to 2017. We then defined the period from 2001 to 2016 to analyze the periodicity of climatic variables and their coherence with dengue incidence. Results: Our results showed systematic cycles of 3-4 years with a recent shortening trend of 2-3 years. Climatic variability, such as positive anomalous temperatures and reduced rainfall due to changes in sea surface temperature (SST), is partially linked to the changing epidemiology of the disease, as this condition provides suitable environments for the Aedes aegypti lifecycle. Conclusion: ENSO may have influenced the dengue temporal patterns in the MRR, transiently reducing its main way of multiyear variability (3-4 years) to 2-3 years. Furthermore, when the epidemic coincided with El Niño years, it spread regionally and was highly synchronized.

Resumo: Introdução: A compressão medular é uma complicação comum de metástases da coluna vertebral e de mieloma múltiplo. Cerca de 30% dos pacientes com câncer desenvolvem metástases sintomáticas na coluna no decorrer da doença. O diagnóstico imediato e o tratamento cirúrgico dessas lesões, embora paliativos, em geral reduzema morbidade e melhoram a qualidade de vidaao ampliar a capacidade de deambular. Desenho do estudo: Revisão retrospectiva de prontuários médicos. Objetivo: Avaliar a recuperação funcional pós-operatória e o perfil epidemiológico da compressão medular neoplásica em dois centros de neurocirurgia do sul do Brasil. Métodos: Analisamos retrospectivamente os dados de todos os pacientes submetidos à cirurgia paliativa de lesão neoplásica sintomática da coluna decorrente decâncer metastático, em dois centros neurocirúrgicos entre janeiro de 2003 e julho de 2021. Foram analisadas as variáveis idade, sexo, estado neurológico, tipo histológico, segmento acometido, complicações e tempo de internação. Resultados: Foram incluídos 82 pacientes no estudo. As lesões ocorreram na coluna torácica em 60 casos. À internação, 95% dos pacientes apresentavam déficits neurológicos, sendoa maioria classificada como Frankel C (37%). Na análise histopatológica, o câncer de mama foi o sítio primário mais comum. Depois da cirurgia, 46 pacientes (56%) tiveram o estado neurológico reclassificado pela escala de Frankel. Entre eles, 22 (47%) recuperaram a capacidade de deambular. Conclusões: O tratamento cirúrgico da compressão medular metastática melhorou o estado neurológico e a capacidade de deambulação em nossa amostra. Nível de evidência II; Estudo retrospectivo.

ABSTRACT Background: Spinal cord compression is a common complication of spine metastasis and multiple myeloma. About 30% of patients with cancer develop symptomatic spinal metastases during their illness. Prompt diagnosis and surgical treatment of these lesions, although palliative, are likely to reduce the morbidity and improve quality of life by improving ambulatory function. Study Design: Retrospective review of medical records. Objective: To evaluate postoperative functional recovery and the epidemiological profile of neoplastic spinal cord compression in two neurosurgical centers in southern Brazil. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of all patients who underwent palliative surgery for symptomatic neoplastic spine lesion from metastatic cancer, in two neurosurgical centers, between January 2003 and July 2021. The variables age, sex, neurological status, histological type, affected segment, complications and length of hospitalization were analyzed. Results: A total of 82 patients were included. The lesions occurred in the thoracic spine in 60 cases. At admission, 95% of the patients had neurological deficits, most of which were Frankel C (37%). At histopathological analysis, breast cancer was the most common primary site. After surgery, the neurological status of 46 patients (56%) was reclassified according to the Frankel scale. Of these, 22 (47%) regained ambulatory capacity. Conclusion: Surgical treatment of metastatic spinal cord compression improved neurological status and ambulatory ability in our sample. Level of evidence II; Retrospective study.

Resumen: Introducción: La compresión de la médula espinal es una complicación común de la metástasis de la columna vertebral y el mieloma múltiple. Aproximadamente el 30% de los pacientes con cáncer desarrollan metástasis espinales sintomáticas en el curso de la enfermedad. El diagnóstico precoz y el tratamiento quirúrgico de estas lesiones, aunque son paliativos, suelen reducir la morbilidad y mejor en lacalidad de vida al aumentar la de ambulación. Diseño del estudio: Revisión retrospectiva de registros médicos. Objetivo: Evaluarla recuperación funcional postoperatoria y el perfil epidemiológico de la compresión medular neoplásica en dos centros neuroquirúrgicos del sur de Brasil. Métodos: Analizamos retrospectivamente los datos de todos los pacientes sometidos a cirugía paliativa por lesión vertebral neoplásica sintomática por cáncer metastásico, en dos centros neuroquirúrgicos entre enero de 2003 y julio de 2021. Se analizaron las variables edad, sexo, estado neurológico, tipo histológico, segmento afectado, complicaciones y duración de la hospitalización. Resultados: Se incluyeron 82 pacientes en el estudio. Las lesiones se produjeron en la columna torácica en 60 casos. Al ingreso, el 95% de los pacientes presentaban déficits neurológicos y la mayoría de ellos eran clasificados como Frankel C (37%). En el análisis histopatológico, elcáncer de mama fue el sitio primario más común. Después de la cirugía, se reclasificó el estado neurológico de 46 pacientes (56%) por la escala de Frankel. Entre ellos, 22 (47%) recuperaron la capacidadde deambulación. Conclusiones: El tratamiento quirúrgico de la compresión medular metastásica mejoró el estado neurológico y la capacidad de deambulación en nuestra muestra. Resumo Introdução: A otoneurologia é uma área de conhecimento que tem se expandido muito rapidamente. O estudo do sistema vestibular tem avançado tanto que mesmo definições básicas, como o significado dos sintomas vestibulares, foram apenas recentemente padronizadas. Objetivo: Apresentar uma revisão dos principais assuntos da otoneurologia, inclusive conceitos, diagnóstico e tratamento da otoneurologia, definir a evidência científica atual para facilitar a tomada de decisões e demonstrar as áreas mais carentes de evidência para estimular novas pesquisas. Método: Este texto é fruto do I Fórum Brasileiro de Otoneurologia, que reuniu os principais pesquisadores brasileiros dessa área para uma revisão da literatura. Serão feitos três trabalhos de revisão a serem publicados. Este primeiro abordou as definições e as terapias, o segundo abordará as ferramentas diagnósticas e o terceiro definirá os principais diagnósticos. Cada autor fez um levantamento bibliográfico na base de dados da Lilacs, SciELO, Pubmed e Medline de um determinado assunto. O seu texto foi então submetido aos demais participantes do Fórum por 30 dias para análise. Um capítulo especial, da definição dos sintomas vestibulares, foi traduzido por serviço de tradução oficial e igualmente submetido às demais etapas do processo. Houve então uma reunião presencial em que todos os textos foram apresentados oralmente e houve uma discussão entre os participantes para a definição de um texto consensual para cada capítulo. Os textos consensuais foram então submetidos a uma revisão final por quatro professores de otoneurologia de três universidades brasileiras e, por fim, finalizado. A partir do texto completo, publicado no site da Associação Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia e Cirurgia Cérvico-Facial, foi escrita esta versão-resumo como artigo de revisão. Resultado: O texto apresenta a tradução oficial para o português da definição dos sintomas vestibulares propostos pela Barany Society e agrupa as principais evidências científicas para cada um das principais terapias existentes para as doenças otoneurológicas. Conclusão: Este texto agrupou de forma racional os principais tópicos de conhecimento a respeito das definições e terapias da otoneurologia, permite ao leitor uma visão ampla da abordagem dos pacientes otoneurológicos baseada em evidências científicas e experiência nacional, que deverá auxiliá-lo na tomada de decisões clínicas, e mostra os assuntos mais carentes de evidência para estimular novos estudos.

Abstract Introduction: Neurotology is a rapidly expanding field of knowledge. The study of the vestibular system has advanced so much that even basic definitions, such as the meaning of vestibular symptoms, have only recently been standardized. Objective: To present a review of the main subjects of neurotology, including concepts, diagnosis and treatment of Neurotology, defining current scientific evidence to facilitate decision-making and to point out the most evidence-lacking areas to stimulate further new research. Methods: This text is the result of the I Brazilian Forum of Neurotology, which brought together the foremost Brazilian researchers in this area for a literature review. In all, there will be three review papers to be published. This first review will address definitions and therapies, the second one will address diagnostic tools, and the third will define the main diseases diagnoses. Each author performed a bibliographic search in the LILACS, SciELO, PubMed and MEDLINE databases on a given subject. The text was then submitted to the other Forum participants for a period of 30 days for analysis. A special chapter, on the definition of vestibular symptoms, was translated by an official translation service, and equally submitted to the other stages of the process. There was then a in-person meeting in which all the texts were orally presented, and there was a discussion among the participants to define a consensual text for each chapter. The consensual texts were then submitted to a final review by four professors of neurotology disciplines from three Brazilian universities and finally concluded. Based on the full text, available on the website of the Brazilian Association of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervical-Facial Surgery, this summary version was written as a review article. Result: The text presents the official translation into Portuguese of the definition of vestibular symptoms proposed by the Bárány Society and brings together the main scientific evidence for each of the main existing therapies for neurotological diseases. Conclusion: This text rationally grouped the main topics of knowledge regarding the definitions and therapies of Neurotology, allowing the reader a broad view of the approach of neurotological patients based on scientific evidence and national experience, which should assist them in clinical decision-making, and show the most evidence-lacking topics to stimulate further study.

Resumo Objetivo Verificar se a intervenção precoce com foco na família melhora o desenvolvimento cognitivo, motor e a linguagem de crianças nascidas prematuras e/ou em risco social nos primeiros três anos de vida. Fontes de dados Metanálise de ensaios clínicos publicados entre 2008 a 2018, nas bases de dados CINAHL, Medline - Pubmed, Medline - BVS, Lilacs - BVS, IBECS - BVS, PEDro e Cochrane/Reviews. Foram incluídos estudos experimentais de intervenção precoce com foco na família cujo público-alvo eram prematuros e/ou crianças em risco social com avaliação do desenvolvimento cognitivo e/ou motor e/ou linguagem até os três anos. Os artigos foram pontuados pela Escala PEDro. Síntese dos dados Do total de 3378 artigos, 12 estudos foram incluídos. A intervenção precoce com foco na família contribuiu para o desenvolvimento dos domínios cognição (DMP = 0,48; 95%IC: 0,34-0,61) e motor (DMP = 0,76; 95% IC: 0,55-0,96) de prematuros. Na cognição, a melhora do desempenho foi observada aos 12, 24 e 36 meses, enquanto no domínio motor, o efeito foi observado apenas aos 12 meses nos prematuros. Não houve benefício da intervenção nos desfechos cognitivo, motor e linguagem de crianças com fator de risco social associado ao biológico. Conclusão Intervenção com foco na família tem efeito positivo sobre a cognição de crianças prematuras. O efeito no desenvolvimento motor foi menor, possivelmente devido à ênfase das intervenções na interação família-criança. O efeito das intervenções sobre o desenvolvimento de crianças em risco social e no domínio da linguagem foram inconclusivos, devido à escassez de estudos na área.

Abstract Objective To verify whether early intervention focused on the family improves the cognitive, motor, and language development of children born preterm and/or at social risk in the first 3 years of life. Source of data Meta-analysis of clinical trials published between 2008 and 2018, in the following databases: CINAHL, MEDLINE - PubMed, MEDLINE - BVS, LILACS - BVS, IBECS - BVS, PEDro and Cochrane Reviews. Experimental studies on early interventions focused on the family, whose target groups were children born preterm and/or at social risk, with assessment of cognitive and/or motor and/or language development up to 3 years were included. The studies were rated using the PEDro Scale. Data synthesis Twelve studies were included from a total of 3378 articles. Early intervention focused on the family contributed to the development of the cognitive (Standardized Mean Difference - SMD = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.34-0.61) and motor (SMD = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.55-0.96) domains of preterm infants. Regarding cognitive development, performance improvement was observed at 12, 24 and 36 months, while in the motor domain, the effect was observed only at 12 months in preterm infants. There was no benefit of the intervention in the cognitive, motor, and language outcomes of children with the social risk factor associated to biological risk. Conclusion Early intervention focused on the family has a positive effect on the cognition of preterm infants. The effect on motor development was lower, possibly due to the emphasis on interventions in family-child interaction. The effect of interventions on the development of children at social risk and on the language domain was inconclusive, due to the scarcity of studies in the area.

Abstract Tambaba environmentally protected area is situated on the south coast of Paraíba State, within the Atlantic forest biome of the northeastern region in Brazil. The Tambaba environmentally protected area consists of a series of independent drainages: Graú, Mucatú, and Bucatú river micro-basins, and Caboclo River sub-basin that belongs to Gurugi River micro-basin. Ichthyological samples were collected in five scientific expeditions between months of June and July in 2015. Twenty-nine sites from different habitats (e.g., spanning tributaries, streams, rivers, and estuaries) were accessed for sampling. A total of 44 species distributed within 38 genera, 25 families, and 17 orders were assigned to the Tambaba hydrographic region. Freshwater species comprised 36% (n = 16) and marine-estuarine species 64% (n = 28) of the total collected specimens. Two invasive species occur in the freshwater sites: Cichla monoculus and Poecilia reticulata. Cheirodon jaguaribensis, Cichlasoma orientale, and Crenicichla brasiliensis are endemic to the Brazilian Northeast region with the first species restricted to the Northeast Caatinga and Coastal drainages hydrographic ecoregion.

Resumo Nesse trabalho, analisamos de maneira crítica as peculiaridades e potencialidades de três abordagens para o cálculo das forças de vínculo em sistemas clássicos holônomos, a saber, o formalismo Newtoniano, o formalismo Lagraniano e um terceiro método misto desenvolvido pelo físico brasileiro Nivaldo A. Lemos [1]. Analisando as soluções de três problemas clássicos por cada um desses métodos, concluímos que o número de dimensões e a quantidade de vínculos do problema influem sobre a eficiência dos métodos, o que proporcionou o estabelecimento de um critério para a escolha do formalismo a ser utilizado.

Abstract In this work, we critically analyze the peculiarities and potentialities of three approaches for the calculation of constraint forces in classical holonomic systems, namely, the Newtonian formalism, the Lagrangian formalism and a third mixed method developed by Brazilian physicist Nivaldo A. Lemos [1]. Analyzing the solutions of three classic problems by each of these methods, we conclude that the number of dimensions and the number of constraints of the problem influence in the efficiency of the methods, which provided the establishment of a criterion for the choice of formalism to be used.

Em 1978 Christopher T. Russell e Richard C. Elphic detectaram tubos de fluxo magnético na região de fronteira da magnetosfera terrestre por meio de dados observacionais obtidos pelos satélites ISEE-1 e −2, que foram denominados eventos de transferência de fluxo, ou simplesmente FTE (do inglês, flux transfer events). O vento solar, juntamente com o campo magnético interplanetário, oriundos do Sol, atingem a região de campo magnético terrestre, produzindo fenômenos como a reconexão magnética e os tubos de fluxo. Esse artigo apresenta uma introdução sobre a conexão Sol-Terra e o processo de reconexão magnética, e principalmente, os conceitos básicos sobre a geração e a formação dos tubos de fluxo magnético. Os modelos que descrevem o tipo de reconexão e as características dos tubos, como por exemplo Russell-Elphic, Lee-Fu e Southwood-Scholer, e as propriedades dos eventos FTE, são apresentados de forma clara e concisa. Por fim, o artigo trata de um exemplo de identificação dos tubos em simulação computacional, realizado nesse trabalho.

In 1978 Christopher T. Russell and Richard C. Elphic detected magnetic flux tubes in magnetosphere boundary region through observational data obtained from the satellites ISEE-1 and −2, which were named flux transfer events (FTE). The solar wind together with the interplanetary magnetic field, both originated in the Sun, reach the earth magnetic field region, producing the magnetic reconnection and the flux tubes phenomena. This paper presents an introduction on the Sun-Earth connection and the magnetic reconnection process, and mainly the basic concepts on the tubes generation and formation. The models which describe the type of reconnection and the tubes signatures, for example, Russell-Elphic, Lee-Fu, Southwood-Scholer, and the FTE event characteristics, are presented in a clear and concise way. Finally, this paper brings an example of the tubes identification in computing simulation, performed in this work.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar os efeitos cumulativos dos fatores de risco associados com complicações precoces graves relacionadas à cirurgia da coluna. Métodos Análise retrospectiva de 583 pacientes tratados cirurgicamente. Complicações graves foram definidas como as que pudessem levar a danos permanentes ou que necessitassem de reinterveção. Um escore foi construído usando modelo de regressão logística. Resultados Noventa e duas complicações precoces graves ocorreram em 76 pacientes (13%). Idade > 60 anos e cirurgia > 3 níveis foram identificadas como fatores de risco independentes na análise multivariada. O escore foi definido como: 0 pontos (nenhum fator de risco), 2 pontos (1 fator) ou 4 pontos (2 fatores). A incidência de complicação grave precoce em cada categoria foi 7% (0 pontos), 15% (2 pontos) e 29% (4 pontos). Conclusões Esse escore balanceado baseado em 2 fatores de risco representa uma ferramenta útil na indicação cirúrgica e para o aconselhamento dos pacientes antes da cirurgia.

ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the cumulative effect of risk factors associated with early major complications in postoperative spine surgery. Methods Retrospective analysis of 583 surgically-treated patients. Early “major” complications were defined as those that may lead to permanent detrimental effects or require further significant intervention. A balanced risk score was built using multiple logistic regression. Results Ninety-two early major complications occurred in 76 patients (13%). Age > 60 years and surgery of three or more levels proved to be significant independent risk factors in the multivariate analysis. The balanced scoring system was defined as: 0 points (no risk factor), 2 points (1 factor) or 4 points (2 factors). The incidence of early major complications in each category was 7% (0 points), 15% (2 points) and 29% (4 points) respectively. Conclusions This balanced scoring system, based on two risk factors, represents an important tool for both surgical indication and for patient counseling before surgery.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar ácaros na cultura de pinhão-manso e em espécies de plantas espontâneas associadas. Para isso, foram avaliadas a riqueza e a abundância de ácaros em plantas de pinhão-manso e em 14 espécies de plantas espontâneas associadas. As amostragens foram realizadas por meio de coletas mensais de folhas de plantas de pinhão-manso e de plantas espontâneas, nas entrelinhas do cultivo. Foram encontradas quatro espécies de ácaros predadores - Amblyseius tamatavensis, Paraphytoseius multidentatus, Typhlodromalus aripo e Typhlodromalus clavicus -, com potencial para uso no controle biológico de ácaros-praga na cultura do pinhão-manso, e duas importantes espécies de ácaros fitófagos - Brevipalpus phoenicis e Tarsonemus confusus - desconhecidas como praga da cultura. Entre as plantas espontâneas avaliadas, quatro espécies - Hyptis suaveolens, Peltaea riedelii, Urochloa mutica e Andropogon gayanus - abrigam grande riqueza e abundância de ácaros predadores, enquanto oito destacaram-se pela diversidade de ácaros fitófagos.

The objective of this work was to identify mites in physic nut culture, and in associated spontaneous weed species. For this, mite richness and abundance on physic nut plants and on 14 species of associated spontaneous weeds were evaluated. Samplings were done with monthy collections of leaves from physic nut plants and from weeds, between planting lines. Four species of predatory mites - Amblyseius tamatavensis, Paraphytoseius multidentatus, Typhlodromalus aripo and Typhlodromalus clavicus -, with potential for biological control of pest mites on physic nut culture, and two species of phytophagous mites - Brevipalpus phoenicis and Tarsonemus confusus -, not yet known as pests of the culture were found. Among the evaluated spontaneous weeds, four species - Hyptis suaveolens, Peltaea riedelii, Urochloa mutica and Andropogon gayanus - harbor great richness and abundance of predatory mites, whereas eight harbored a high diversity of phytophagous mites.

Extratos hexânicos obtidos dos frutos de Melia azedarach foram testados sobre fêmeas ingurgitadas e larvas de Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Foram produzidos quatro extratos: um de frutos verdes e três com frutos maduros, sendo um com os frutos imediatamente processados, outro com frutos armazenados por cinco meses e um testado após armazenamento do extrato por 2 (dois) anos a 4ºC. Os testes foram feitos em triplicata, em diluições de 0,25% a 0,0156%. A eficácia dos extratos foi avaliada através da comparação da Reprodução Estimada dos lotes "controle e tratado" para fêmeas, da mortalidade para as larvas, e do cálculo das DL50 e da potência relativa para larvas e fêmeas. O extrato de frutos verdes apresentou uma eficácia variando de 3,6% a 100% para fêmeas, e o de frutos maduros variou de 5,2% a 99,7%. Os dois extratos causaram uma mortalidade de 100% das larvas nas maiores concentrações. O extrato de frutos armazenados apresentou eficácia de 14% a 83% sobre fêmeas, enquanto o extrato armazenado em geladeira apresentou eficácia de 8,4% a 100% e ambos não apresentaram efeito larvicida. Os resultados obtidos demonstram uma superioridade do extrato verde, com uma menor DL50 e potência 1,497 vezes superior ao extrato de frutos maduros.

Hexanic extracts gotten of the fruits of cinamomo (Melia azedarach) were tested on engourged females and larvae of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Four extracts were produced: one of unripe fruits and three of ripe fruits, being one with the fruits immediately processed, another one with fruits stored for five months and one tested after storage of the extract for 2 (two) years at 4ºC. The tests were made in triplicate, in 0.25%- 0.0156% dilutions. The effectiveness of extracts was evaluated through the comparison of the Reproduction Estimate of the groups "controlled and treated" for females, of mortality for the larvae, and of the calculation of the DL50 and the relative power for larvae and females. The extract of unripe fruits presented the effectiveness varying the 3.6% - 100% for females, and of ripe fruits it varied of 5.2% - 99.7%. The two extracts caused a mortality of 100% of the larvae in the highest concentrations. The extract of stored fruits presented effectiveness of 14% - 83% on females, while the extract stored in refrigerator presented effectiveness of 8.4% 100% and both did not present larvicidal effect. The results demonstrate a superiority of the unripe extract, with a minor DL50 and superior power 1.497 times to the extract of ripe fruits.

In austenitic stainless steels, plastic deformation can induce martensite formation. The induced martensite is related to the austenite (gamma) instability at temperatures close or below room temperature. The metastability of austenite stainless steels increases with the decreasing of stacking fault energy (SFE). In this work, the deformation induced martensite was analyzed by X ray diffraction, electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD), magnetic methods and atomic force microscope (AFM) in samples of a low SFE austenitic stainless steel, AISI 301LN and compared with a medium SFE stainless steel, AISI 316L. Both techniques, X ray diffraction and EBSD, presented similar quantities for the alpha’-martensite. Texture results indicate that the crystallographic orientation of the formed alpha’-martensite is {001}<110> and {103}<110>. The morphology of alpha’-martensite was analyzed by AFM. Corrosion tests showed that deformation reduces pitting corrosion and generalized corrosion resistance in both steels.
