ABSTRACT Blackberries have a short post-harvest conservation period, making it necessary to optimize harvest and storage conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of refrigerated storage and maturation stage on the physicochemical quality of ‘BRS Cainguá’ blackberries, produced in an organic system. Blackberries from an experimental orchard, were harvested at three ripeness stages (RS), with RS1 being fruits with 100% red skin; RS2 skin 50% red and 50% black; and EM3 100% black skin. The samples were stored in a cold chamber at 4±0.5ºC and 90-95% RH for 12 days. The evaluations were carried out after 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 days of storage, for: weight loss (WL), soluble solids (SS), pH, titratable acidity (TA), ratio (SS/TA) and color parameters. Blackberries harvested in RS3 had the highest SS content, lowest TA and the highest SS/TA ratio and pH. During storage, TA and WL showed decreasing and increasing linear responses, respectively, regardless of the RS of the fruits. Harvesting based on the skin color of ‘BRS Cainguá’ blackberries influences the physicochemical quality and postharvest conservation. Fruits harvested with 100% black skin, have the best quality and are the most suitable for subsequent refrigerated storage.

Abstract: This work aims to identify the elements associated with the aff ective image of the tourist destination Vale dos Vinhedos, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, relating the words expres- sed by the tourists in their reviews on the TripAdvisor website. The methodology involves qualitative data analysis and content analysis, through a sampling of reviews on TripAdvisor, generating 2,.380 comments about the tourist destination. In the data analysis, the IRA- MUTEQ software and the R software were used to create the fi gures based on the tourists’ comments. The results showed that the analyses of aff ective image of the tourists are as- sociated with Vale dos Vinhedos, based on comments that used positive words about the place, highlighting the excellent potential for development of the tourist destination and the consolidation of wine tourism, as the most frequently used words in the database, related to the wineries are: cultural, historical, gastronomic, and the diff erent types of tourist servi- ces in the region. It is concluded that the words used by tourists on the TripAdvisor website show that the aff ective image of Vale dos Vinhedos indicates it to be a tourist destination with excellent tourist attractions, with a focus on local culture, gastronomic experiences, wine tourism, and with a wide range of services for tourists.

Resumen: Este trabajo tiene como objetivo identificar los elementos asociados a la imagen afectiva del destino turístico Vale dos Vinhedos, en Rio Grande do Sul, relacionando las palabras que los turistas expresan a través de sus reseñas en el sitio web TripAdvisor. La metodología es el análisis cualitativo de datos y análisis de contenido realizado a través del muestreo recogido por la web de TripAdvisor, generando 2.380 comentarios sobre el destino turístico. En el análisis de datos se utilizó el software IRAMUTEQ y el software R para crear las cifras a partir de los comentarios de los turistas. Como resultado, los estudios sobre la imagen afectiva de los turistas asociados al Vale dos Vinhedos, basados en observaciones que utilizaron palabras positivas sobre el lugar, destacan el excelente potencial de desarrollo del destino turístico y la consolidación del enoturismo como las palabras más utilizadas en la base de datos, relacionadas con las bodegas son: la cultural, histórica, gastronómica, y los diferentes tipos de servicios turísticos de la región. Se concluye que las palabras utilizadas por los turistas en el sitio web de TripAdvisor muestran que la imagen afectiva del Vale dos Vinhedos se destaca por ser un destino turístico con excelentes atractivos turísticos, con foco en la cultura local, las experiencias gastronómicas, el enoturismo y la diversidad de los servicios que presta el destino turístico a los turistas.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho é identificar os elementos associados à imagem afetiva do destino turístico Vale dos Vinhedos, no Rio Grande do Sul, relacionando as palavras expressas pelos turistas através de suas avaliações no site TripAdvisor. A metodologia utilizada foi baseada em análise de dados qualitativos e análise de conteúdo feita por amostragem, levantada pelo site TripAdvisor, gerando 2.380 comentários sobre o destino turístico. Na análise de dados, foi utilizado o software IRAMUTEQ e o software R para que fossem geradas as figuras baseadas nos comentários dos turistas. Como resultado, as análises da imagem afetiva dos turistas estão associadas ao Vale dos Vinhedos, baseado nos comentários que utilizaram palavras positivas sobre o local destacando o grande potencial de desenvolvimento do destino turístico e a consolidação do enoturismo, como destaque das palavras mais utilizadas no banco de dados, relacionadas às vinícolas estão: a cultural, histórica, gastronômica e os diversos tipos de serviços turísticos da região. Conclui-se que as palavras utilizadas pelos turistas, no site TripAdvisor mostram que a imagem afetiva do Vale dos Vinhedos se destaca por ser um destino turístico com excelentes atrativos turísticos, com enfoque na cultura local, nas experiências gastronômicas, no enoturismo e na diversidade de serviços proporcionados pelo destino turístico para os turistas.

Abstract Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is considered one of the most common autosomal recessive disorders, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 10,000 live births. Testing for SMA has been recommended for inclusion in neonatal screening (NBS) panels since there are several therapies available and there is evidence of greater efficacy when introduced in the pre/early symptomatic phases. In Brazil, the National Neonatal Screening Program tests for six diseases, with a new law issued in 2021 stating that it should incorporate more diseases, including SMA. In the present study, dried blood spot (DBS) samples collected by the Reference Services of Neonatal Screening of RS and SP, to perform the conventional test were also screened for SMA, using real-time PCR, with SALSA MC002 technique. A total of 40,000 samples were analyzed, enabling the identification of four positive cases of SMA, that were confirmed by MLPA. Considering our sampling, Brazil seems to have an incidence comparable to the described in other regions. This work demonstrated that the use of the MC002 technique in samples routinely collected for the conventional NBS program is suitable to screen for SMA in our conditions and can be included in the expansion of the neonatal screening programs.

BACKGROUND Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus that has been causing large outbreaks in the Americas since 2014. In Brazil, Asian-Caribbean (AC) and East-Central-South-African (ECSA) genotypes have been detected and lead to large outbreaks in several Brazilian states. In Rio Grande do Sul (RS), the southernmost state of Brazil, the first cases were reported in 2016. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS We employed genome sequencing and epidemiological investigation to characterise the Chikungunya fever (CHIKF) burden in RS between 2017-2021. FINDINGS We detected an increasing CHIKF burden linked to travel associated introductions and communitary transmission of distinct lineages of the ECSA genotype during this period. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Until 2020, CHIKV introductions were most travel associated and transmission was limited. Then, in 2021, the largest outbreak occurred in the state associated with the introduction of a new ECSA lineage. CHIKV outbreaks are likely to occur in the near future due to abundant competent vectors and a susceptible population, exposing more than 11 million inhabitants to an increasing infection risk.

Abstract The article discusses the constitution of the industrial soundscape of the city of Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul, based on two textile factories: Rheingantz and Ítalo-brasileira (1950 – 1970). The text analyzes how this landscape is evoked by former workers and residents, starting from sound signals such as the factory whistle and others that refer to the factory universe. The article is based on the concept of soundscape by Raymond Murray Schafer, approaching what the author translates as “acoustic community.” Methodologically, the article is based on the field of the history of sensibilities and on the importance of the sensorial regime for social relations. The results of the article point to a sound inventory, to the diversity of emotions and perceptions involved, and highlight the role that sounds play in memorial and identity construction.

Resumo O artigo aborda a constituição da paisagem sonora industrial da cidade do Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul, partir de duas fábricas têxteis: Rheingantz e Ítalo-brasileira (1950-1970). O texto analisa como esta paisagem é evocada por antigos trabalhadores e moradores, partindo de sinais sonoros como o apito da fábrica e outros que remetem ao universo fabril. O artigo se sustenta no conceito de paisagem sonora – soundscape –, de Raymond Murray Schafer, se aproximando do que o autor traduz como “comunidade acústica”. Metodologicamente o artigo se baseia no campo da história das sensibilidades e na importância do regime sensorial para as relações sociais. Os resultados do artigo apontam para um inventário sonoro, para a diversidade de emoções e percepções envolvidas e destacam o papel que os sons desempenham na construção memorial e identitária.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the care practices provided by nurses to people with tuberculosis in the Family Health Strategy. Method: descriptive qualitative research, carried out with 11 nurses from family health units in the Rio Grande, RS - Brazil, in the first semester of 2021. The invitation was made by telephone and an online interview was scheduled. The data were analyzed according to content analysis. Results: three categories were evidenced; Practices related to nursing care: obstacles and misconceptions, (Rel)Actions in nursing care for the user with TB, (Re)Thinking about the guidelines provided to the user. The care practices were based on the bond and on welcoming the user. However, there were misunderstandings in the guidelines and obstacles in coping with the disease. A change was observed in the conduct and perception about the disease in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Conclusion: good care practices, both relational and technical, are crossed by difficulties, whether internal or external to the unit.

RESUMEN Objetivo: conocer las prácticas de cuidados prestados por las enfermeras a las personas con tuberculosis en la Estrategia de Salud de la Familia. Método: investigación cualitativa descriptiva realizada con 11 enfermeros de unidades de salud familiar de Rio Grande, RS - Brasil, en el primer semestre de 2021. La invitación se hizo por teléfono y se programó una entrevista en línea. Los datos fueron analizados de acuerdo con el análisis de contenido. Resultados: se evidenciaron tres categorías: Prácticas relacionadas con los cuidados de enfermería: obstáculos y concepciones erróneas, (Rel)Acciones en los cuidados de enfermería al usuario con TB, (Re)Pensamiento sobre las orientaciones dadas al usuario. Las prácticas de cuidados se basaron en el vínculo y en la acogida al usuario. Sin embargo, hubo malentendidos en las orientaciones y obstáculos en el afrontamiento de la enfermedad. Se observó un cambio en la conducta y percepción de la enfermedad ante la pandemia del Covid-19. Conclusión: Las buenas prácticas asistenciales, tanto relacionales como técnicas, se ven atravesadas por dificultades, ya sean internas o externas a la unidad.

Método: pesquisa qualitativa descritiva, realizada com 11 enfermeiras de unidades de saúde da família do Rio Grande, RS - Brasil, no primeiro semestre de 2021. O convite ocorreu por telefonema, sendo agendada entrevista online. Os dados foram analisados segundo análise de conteúdo. Resultados: evidenciaram-se três categorias; Práticas relacionadas ao cuidado de enfermagem: obstáculos e equívocos, (Rel)Ações no cuidado de enfermagem ao usuário com TB, (Re)Pensando sobre as orientações prestadas ao usuário. As práticas de cuidado, pautavam-se no vínculo e no acolhimento ao usuário. Todavia, houve equívocos nas orientações e obstáculos no enfrentamento da doença. Foi observado modificação nas condutas e na percepção sobre a doença diante da pandemia de Covid-19. Conclusão: as boas práticas de cuidado, relacionais e técnicas, são atravessadas por dificuldades, sejam internas ou externas à unidade.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a indução da cicatrização de enxertos cutâneos em malha após a utilização de flap de omento transposto através de túnel no subcutâneo até o leito receptor. Avaliações macroscópica e microscópica foram realizadas. Foram utilizados 19 suínos. Duas feridas cirúrgicas foram criadas em cada animal. O enxerto removido do lado esquerdo (LE) foi fixado do lado direito (LD), sem a presença do flap de omento entre o enxerto e o leito receptor (grupo controle - GC). No LE, foi fixado um flap de omento entre o enxerto cutâneo removido do LD e o leito receptor (grupo omento - GO). As avaliações macroscópicas mostraram que o edema diminuiu gradativamente em ambos os grupos. A deiscência foi maior no dia 10 em comparação aos demais dias, em ambos os grupos, entre os diferentes dias de avaliação. Foi verificada a presença de tecido desvitalizado em 32% do GO e em 53% no GC. Foi observada, na avaliação microscópica, maior colagenização, reepitelização, queratinização e menor edema no GO, quando comparado ao GC. Concluiu-se, com este estudo, que enxertos cutâneos em malha evoluíram satisfatoriamente em suínos, mesmo em leito receptor recém-criado e sem presença de tecido de granulação, desde que vascularizado, e que o flap de omento propiciou melhores resultados macro e microscópicos relativos à integração do enxerto.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to assess healing induction of free skin grafts following transposition of omental flap through a subcutaneous tunnel to the recipient bed. Macroscopic and microscopic evaluations were performed. Nineteen piglets were used. Two surgical wounds were created of each subject. The graft removed from the left side (LS) was placed on the right side (RS) without the omental flap in the graft-bed (control group-CG). On the LS, an omental flap was placed between the graft removed from the RS and the recipient bed (omentum group-OG). Macroscopic evaluations showed edema, which gradually decreased on both groups. Suture dehiscence was highest at day 10 compared to other days in both groups. The CG had a higher incidence of unvitalized tissue compared to OG, although no difference was found among days of postoperative evaluation. The presence of unvitalized tissue was seen on 32% on OG and 53% on CG. Microscopic evaluations revealed higher collagenization, reepithelization, keratinization and less swelling in the OG compared to CG. In conclusion, mesh skin grafts evolved satisfactorily in swine even in newly created bedding without granulation tissue, but with appropriate vascularization. The omentum flap provided better macroscopic and microscopic outcomes regarding graft integration.

Subjects and methods: Retrospective cohort study including 462 women with GDM and singleton pregnancy delivered in our institution between January 2015 and June 2018 and grouped according to BMI/GWG. Results: The diagnosis of GDM was more likely to be established in the 1st trimester (T) in women with obesity than in normal-weight (55.8% vs 53.7%, p = 0.008). BMI positively and significantly correlated with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels in the 1stT (rs = 0.213, p = 0.001) and 2ndT (rs = 0.210, p = 0.001). Excessive GWG occurred in 44.9% women with overweight and in 40.2% with obesity (p < 0.001). From women with obesity, 65.1% required pharmacological treatment (p < 0.001). Gestational hypertension (GH) was more frequent in women with obesity (p = 0.016). During follow-up, 132 cesareans were performed, the majority in mothers with obesity (p = 0.008). Of the 17 large-for-gestational-age (LGA) birthweight delivered, respectively 6 and 9 were offsprings of women with overweight and obesity (p = 0.019). Maternal BMI had a predictive value only for macrosomia [aOR 1.177 (1.006-1.376), p = 0.041]. BMI and GWG positively correlated with birthweight (rs = 0.132, p = 0.005; rs = 0.188, p = 0.005). Conclusion: Maternal obesity is related with a major probability of diagnosis of GDM in 1stT, fasting hyperglycemia in 2ndT and a more frequent need for pharmacological therapy. Pre-gestational obesity is associated with GH, cesarean delivery and fetal macrosomia.

RESUMO: A divisão de subconjuntos de treinamento e teste é parte fundamental da otimização de modelos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da escolha do subconjunto de treinamento na construção dos modelos, bem como sua validação. Os métodos Kennard-Stone (KS) e a amostragem aleatória (AA) foram avaliados em dados de espectroscopia no infravermelho próximo (NIR) e em dados de marcadores SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms). Vale destacar, que em dados SNPs, não há conhecimento de relatos na literatura a respeito da utilização do método KS. Para a construção e validação dos modelos, o método de estimação dos mínimos quadrados parciais (PLS) e Lasso bayesiano (BLASSO) mostraram-se mais eficientes para os dados NIR e para os dados SNPs, respetivamente. A avaliação da capacidade preditiva dos modelos obtidos após a partição dos dados ocorreu por meio da correlação entre os valores preditos e os valores reais, e da raiz quadrada do erro quadrático médio de predição. Para ambos os conjuntos de dados, os resultados indicam que os métodos KS e AA diferem estatisticamente entre si pelo teste F (valor P < 0.01), com o KS mais eficiente do que o AA em praticamente todas as repetições. Além disso, o método KS possui a vantagem de ser fácil e rápido de ser aplicado e também de selecionar sempre as mesmas amostras, o que proporciona grandes benefícios em futuras análises.

ABSTRACT: Splitting the whole dataset into training and testing subsets is a crucial part of optimizing models. This study evaluated the influence of the choice of the training subset in the construction of predictive models, as well as on their validation. For this purpose we assessed the Kennard-Stone (KS) and the Random Sampling (RS) methods in near-infrared spectroscopy data (NIR) and marker data SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms). It is worth noting that in SNPs data, there is no knowledge of reports in the literature regarding the use of the KS method. For the construction and validation of the models, the partial least squares (PLS) estimation method and the Bayesian Lasso (BLASSO) proved to be more efficient for NIR data and for marker data SNPs, respectively. The evaluation of the predictive capacity of the models obtained after the data partition occurred through the correlation between the predicted and the observed values, and the corresponding square root of the mean squared error of prediction. For both datasets, results indicated that the results from KS and RS methods differ statistically from each other by the F test (P-value < 0.01). The KS method showed to be more efficient than RS in practically all repetitions. Also, KS method has the advantage of being easy and fast to be applied and also to select the same samples, which provides excellent benefits in the following analyses.

RESUMO Comparar o equivalente metabólico (MET) medido e estimado e o gasto energético (EE) em diferentes situações em pacientes com diabetes tipo 1 (DM1). Dez DM1 realizaram três sessões de 30 minutos (Repouso, Corrida-RS e Exergame-VS) em intensidade moderada. MET e EE foram medidos por um analisador direto de gases e estimados pela fórmula usando frequência cardíaca e V̇02pico. Valores MET (medidos vs. estimados) foram estatisticamente diferentes durante o RS (4,58±1,11 vs. 7,59±1,36) e o VS (3,98±0,84 vs. 5,77±0,84) (p<0,001). Semelhante em EE: RS (147±43 vs. 246±157) e VS (129±33 vs. 184±20) (p<0,001). O erro entre os métodos: 0,41, 1,51 e 1,07 MET e 20,1, 51,5 e 32,5 Kcal para Repouso, RS e VS. A estimativa pode ser usada em repouso e com cuidado durante RS e VS.

ABSTRACT To compare measured and estimated metabolic equivalent (MET) and energy expenditure (EE) in different situations with Type-1 diabetes (T1DM) patients. Ten T1DM patients performed three 30-minute sessions (resting, running-RS, and exergame-VS) at moderate intensity. MET and EE were measured by direct gas analyzer and estimated using the formula applying heart rate and V̇02peak. MET values (measured vs. estimated) were statistically different during RS (4.58±1.11 vs.7.59±1.36) and VS (3.98± 0.84 vs. 5.77±0.84) (p<0.001). EE values were similar: RS (147±43 vs. 246±157) and VS (129±33 vs. 184±20) (p<0.001). The error between the methods: 0.41, 1.51, and 1.07 METs and 20.1, 51.5, and 32.5 Kcals for resting, RS, and VS. Estimation could be used in resting and with caution for RS and VS.

RESUMO Introdução: A retinopatia da prematuridade (ROP) é um distúrbio vasoproliferativo da retina que afeta recém nascidos extremamente prematuros e é a principal causa de cegueira irreversível na infância. Objetivo: Este estudo apresenta uma revisão das revisões sistemáticas da Cochrane sobre ROP. Métodos: Analisamos e resumimos os resultados de todas as intervenções, prevenção e tratamento, das revisões sistemáticas (SR) da Cochrane para ROP, projetada com o mais alto padrão de rigor para mostrar a posição atual e propor estudos que estão faltando para a tomada de decisão. Resultados: Oito RS foram analisados neste estudo, quatro em profilaxia e quatro em tratamento de ROP. O efeito benéfico dos betabloqueadores orais na progressão para a ROP do estágio 3, mas não para a ROP da fase 2 com doença positiva ou para a ROP da fase 4 ou 5 foi o único que apresentou qualidade de evidência moderada, todos os outros resultados apresentaram qualidade de evidência flutuante de baixo a muito baixo. Conclusão: Faltam estudos demonstrando a qualidade das evidências no tratamento e prevenção da retinopatia da prematuridade, principalmente em desfechos em longo prazo após o tratamento, a fim de avaliar o impacto e a qualidade de vida desses pacientes.

ABSTRACT Background: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative retinal disorder that affects extremely premature infants and is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in childhood. Objective: This study presents a review of Cochrane systematic reviews about ROP. Methods: We analyzed and summarized the results of all intervention, prevention and treatment, from Cochrane Systematic Reviews (SR) for ROP designed to the highest standard of rigor to show the current position and propose studies that are missing for decision making. Results: Eight SR were analyzed in this study, four in prophylaxis and four in treatment of ROP. The outcome 'Beneficial effect of oral beta-blockers on progression to stage 3 ROP but not to stage 2 ROP with plus disease or to stage 4 or 5 ROP was the only one that presented moderate evidence quality, all the others outcomes presented evidence quality floating from low to very low. Conclusion: There is a lack of studies showing the quality of evidence in the treatment and prevention of retinopathy of prematurity, particularly in long-term outcomes after treatment in order to assess the impact and quality of life of these patients.

Abstract Aim: This study aimed to examine the association between physical activity (PA) indicators and TV viewing as a function of the Human Development Index (HDI). Method: This cross-sectional study was based on data from the National School Health Survey, which was composed of 102,072 students (14.28±1.03; 51.3% girls). Total PA, active commuting to school (ACS) and TV viewing were assessed by questionnaires and classified through a gradual scale ranging from “F” (low) to “A+” (high). The correlation between total PA, ACS, TV viewing and HDI was verified by Spearman’s Correlation and presented in rs. Results: HDI was positively associated with total PA [girls: rs = 0.572 (p < 0.001); boys: rs = 0.843 (p < 0.001)] and ACS [girls: rs = 0.433 (p < 0.001); boys: rs = 0.554 (p < 0.001)]; while a negative correlation was found between HDI and TV viewing [girls: rs = -0.330 (p < 0.001); boys: rs = -0.348 (p < 0.001)]. Conclusions: Brazilian adolescents from states with higher HDI were more active and spent more time watching TV than their counterparts from states with lower HDI.

ABSTRACT Chagas disease (CD) has been considered endemic in the South of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) State, Brazil. This study aimed at evaluating the occurrence of Trypanosoma cruzi vectors based on the main species captured in Southern Rio Grande do Sul State from 2008 to 2019. The study area comprised counties that belong to the 3rd Regional Health Coordination (RHC) and to the 7th RHC, whose headquarters are in Pelotas and Bage, respectively. The study was based on secondary data provided by the partnership between the Federal University of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State (UFPel-RS) and the State Health Surveillance Center in RS (SCHS-RS). One thousand and four hundred triatomines were captured in the area supervised by the 3rd RHC, mainly in Cangucu (37.7%), Piratini (22.4%) and Pinheiro Machado (15.1%), while, in the area supervised by the 7th RHC, the largest number of triatomines was captured in Lavras do Sul (64.15%). In both areas, Triatoma rubrovaria (90.6%) and Panstrongylus tupynambai (7.4%) were the most common species. Most were captured inside households but T. cruzi-positive insects were not found in the period under study. The results of this study show that, in Southern Rio Grande do Sul State, there is still a high rate of triatomine household invasion and dispersal, mainly by T. rubrovaria. Thus, the entomological surveillance should be maintained with the participation of the population and further studies should be deepened in the area.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi relacionar o uso de agrotóxicos com a ocorrência de malformações congênitas no município de Giruá (RS), bem como determinar os fatores de risco associados. A pesquisa é de abordagem quantitativa, do tipo descritivo-exploratória, realizada durante o primeiro semestre de 2019. O estudo foi conduzido em duas etapas: (a) associação da ocorrência de malformações com o uso de agrotóxicos, que foi calculada por meio dos Odds Ratios, sendo o Intervalo de Confiança (IC) adotado para as amostras de 95%; e (b) determinação dos fatores de risco associados, em que foi realizada uma entrevista com agricultores residentes no município. Percebe-se que as taxas de malformações congênitas do município de Giruá são superiores à média do estado para o mesmo período. Há probabilidade de que a ocorrência de malformações no município esteja associada ao uso de agrotóxicos, pois todos os valores dos Odds Ratios foram maiores que um. Os fatores de risco identificados foram baixa escolaridade, classe toxicológica e princípios ativos, uso inadequado de Equipamentos de Proteção Individual (EPIs), número de pessoas com diagnóstico de intoxicação ou que relataram algum sinal ou sintoma associado e armazenamento dos produtos.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to relate the use of pesticides to the occurrence of congenital malformations in the city of Giruá (RS), as well as to determine the associated risk factors. The research has a quantitative, descriptive-exploratory approach, and was carried out during the first semester of 2019. The study was conducted in two stages: (a) association of the occurrence of malformations with the use of pesticides which was calculated using the Odds Ratios, with the Confidence Interval (CI) being adopted for the 95% samples; and (b) determination of the associated risk factors, for which an interview was conducted with farmers living in the municipality. It is noticed that the rates of congenital malformations in the city of Giruá, are higher than the state average for the same period. There is a probability that the occurrence of malformations in the municipality is associated with the use of pesticides, because all Odds Ratios were greater than one. The risk factors identified were low educational level, toxicological class and active principles, inadequate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), number of people diagnosed with intoxication or who reported some associated signal or symptom and storage of the products.
