ABSTRACT This paper aimed to develop predictive models to determine total soluble solids, firmness, and ripening stages of ‘Pacovan’ bananas, using Vis-NIR spectroscopy and machine learning algorithms. A total of 384 bananas were divided into different days of storage (0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21 days) at two temperatures (25°C and 20°C). Bananas were subjected to spectral analysis using a spectrometer operating in spectral range of 350 – 2500 nm. Physicochemical parameters of quality, total soluble solids, and firmness were determined by reference analyses. Different machine learning algorithms were used to develop regression models and supervised classification. The best model for total soluble solids was the Random Forest with variable selection, showing an R2cv of 0.90 and RMSECV of 2.31. The best model for firmness was the Support Vector Machine with variable selection, showing an R2cv of 0.84 and RMSECV of 7.98. The best classification model for different ripening stages was the Multilayer Perceptron with variable selection, which achieved the precision of 74.22%. Therefore, Vis-NIR spectroscopy associated with machine learning algorithms is a promising tool for monitoring the quality and ripening stages of ‘Pacovan’ bananas.

ABSTRACT The first record of Phyllanthus chacoensis for the Brazilian Amazon is presented, based on a specimen from Rondônia state. The species can be recognized by its cauliflorous inflorescence, staminate and pistillate flowers with 4 sepals, devoid of a floral disk, 4 stamens, 2-carpellary ovary, drupaceous, ellipsoidal fruits, with one seed per locule. The species was previously known only from the central-western and northeastern regions of the Caatinga and Pantanal domains in Brazil. We provide a list of synonyms, a detailed description, an updated geographic distribution map in Brazil, data on habitat and conservation status, illustrations of its reproductive characters, and detailed photographs. We also propose a lectotype for the species.

Currently, the pharmaceutical industry devotes great attention to drug degradation products because these compounds can offer risks to patients. A previous degradation study of betahistine (N-α-methyl-2-pyridylethylamine) conducted under different stress conditions detected three main impurities named A, B and C. Degradation products were analyzed by high-resolution mass spectrometry in electrospray source and time of flight analyzer (ESI-TOF) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Impurity mutagenicity was evaluated by Derek Nexus and Sarah Nexus softwares. Liquid chromatography hyphenate with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis of the betahistine forced degradation sample indicated the presence of a new impurity, which was named impurity C1. 2D NMR experiments allowed the complete structural characterization of the new entity. The active pharmaceutical ingredient and degradation impurities were classified as inactive in the in silico mutagenic studies. Systematic investigation of a forced degradation sample led to the characterization of a new betahistine impurity. The in silico mutagenicity study of the betahistine degradation impurities may be useful in the risk assessment of the drug products.

ABSTRACT Trembleya phlogiformis DC., Melastomataceae, is a shrub whose leaves are used as a dye for dyeing wool and cotton. The present article aimed to carry out the morphological description of the species, to study the chemical composition of volatile oils from the leaves and flowers and the seasonal variability from the leaves during a year. Macroscopic characterization was carried out with the naked eye and with a stereoscopic microscope. Volatile oils were isolated by hydrodistillation in Clevenger apparatus and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The major components of the volatile oil of T. phlogiformis flowers were: n-heneicosane (33.5%), phytol (12.3%), n-tricosane (8.4%) and linoleic acid (6.1%). It was verified the existence of a large chemical variability of the volatile oils from the leaves of T. phlogiformis over the months, with the majority compound (oleic alcohol, ranging from 5.7 to 26.8%) present in all samples. A combination of Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis showed the existence of three main clusters, probably related to the seasons. The results suggested that the volatile oils of T. phlogiformis leaves possess high chemical variability, probably related to variation associated with rainfall and the variation in the behavior of specimens throughout the year. This research provides insights for future studies on the volatile oils obtained from the T. phlogiformis leaves and flowers, mainly related to biological markers of applications monitored in the leaves and flowers of this species.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

We report herein the synthesis and characterization of two dinuclear μ-oxo iron compounds obtained through the reactions of FeSO4•7H2 O and FeCl3•6H2 O with 1-(bis-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amino)-3-chloropropan-2-ol (L5), which resulted in the compounds [(SO4)(L5)Fe(μ-O)Fe(L5)(SO4 )]•6H2O, 1, and [Cl(L5)Fe(μ-O)Fe(L5)Cl]Cl2• 2H2O, 2. The electronic spectra of both compounds show absorption bands only in the UV range. The electrochemical analysis showed that the dinuclear unit is more stable under reduction in compound 1 than in compound 2, while the Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed that the monodentate ligands (sulfate and chloride) have a significant influence on the Mössbauer parameters determined for 1 and 2, particularly on the quadrupole splitting values. Both compounds were studied as catalysts in reactions of cyclohexane oxidation, using H2O2 and t-BuOOH as oxidants, in a substrate:oxidant:catalyst ratio of 1000:1000:1. Cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone, cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, t-butyl cyclohexyl peroxide and adipic acid were formed during the process. The experiments revealed that compound 2 is, in general, more active than compound 1 in promoting cyclohexane oxidation.

Allelopathy should be defined as any stimulatory or inhibitory effect by one plant on another through production of chemical compounds released into the environment. Several Solanum species have shown some allelopathic property. S. lycocarpum islargely distributed on disturbed areas of the Brazilian Cerrado. In the present study the effects of aqueous extracts of S. lycocarpum leaves on the germination and growth of Sesanum indicum L. (sesame) were investigated. Aqueous leaf extracts at concentrations of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% (w/v) were prepared. The osmolarity of the extracts were measured and solutions of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) of similar osmolarity were prepared to evaluate osmotic effects of the extracts on sesame germination and growth. The experiments were carried out on petri dishes lined by two layers of filter paper plus the solutions to be tested. For the germination experiments the number of germinated seeds was checked every 8h. For the growth experiments sesame seeds were previously germinated in water and disposed to grow in the extracts. After five days of incubation the root and shoot length of the seedlings was measured. All the experiments were performed at 22 ºC, 30 ºC and 38 ºC. The extracts did not affect the germinability but increased the average germination time in a dose-dependent manner at the three temperatures. The root growth was more affected by the extracts, showing tip-necrosis, absence of root hairs, and formation of secondary roots. These effects were more evident at 38 ºC. Using PEG 6000 it was shown that the observed effects were not due to osmotic properties of the leaf extracts.
