ABSTRACT: Brazil is the largest sugarcane producer in the world and the leader in the production of sugar and ethanol. Although sugarcane has become an important factor in the Brazilian economy, cultivation has presented many issues, for example, the problems due to burning before the manual harvest. The Brazilian authorities have approved a law that prohibits this practice and mechanized harvesting has thus become the most fitting approach. Given this development, areas for sugarcane plantation must be properly rebuilt to accommodate the new way of harvesting. The main characteristic demanded of sugarcane plots to use harvesting machines is that they must be rectangular. In the present paper, we propose a methodology for dividing the plantation area into plots and planning their allocation so as to accommodate mechanized harvesting. In view of the requirement for plots to be rectangular, we represented this problem as a two-dimensional cutting problem, and to find a solution we adopted the AND/OR graph approach. The computational experiments were conducted using real cases, and the proposed strategy was shown to perform well.

A radiotherapy planning is considered optimal when all the parameters involved, physical or biological, have been investigated and appropriate for each patient. In this type of planning, the major concern is with the tumor irradiation with the minimum possible damage to healthy tissues of the irradiated region, especially the organs at risk. The optimal planning for radiotherapy can be aided by Linear Programming and there is a wide literature addressing this subject. However, most published mathematical formulations do not contemplate a scenario in terms of practical applications, because they do not incorporate the heterogeneous composition of the irradiated tissue. This paper presents a methodology for heterogeneity correction in the composition of different types of irradiated tissues based on proportions among their different linear attenuation coefficient.

O desenvolvimento de projetos relacionados ao desempenho de diversas culturas tem recebido aperfeiçoamento cada vez maior, incorporado a modelos matemáticos sendo indispensável à utilização de equações cada vez mais consistentes que possibilitem previsão e maior aproximação do comportamento real, diminuindo o erro na obtenção das estimativas. Entre as operações unitárias que demandam maior estudo estão aquelas relacionadas com o crescimento da cultura, caracterizadas pela temperatura ideal para o acréscimo de matéria seca. Pelo amplo uso dos métodos matemáticos na representação, análise e obtenção de estimativas de graus-dia, juntamente com a grande importância que a cultura da cana-de-açúcar tem para a economia brasileira, foi realizada uma avaliação dos modelos matemáticos comumente usados e dos métodos numéricos de integração na estimativa da disponibilidade de graus-dia para essa cultura, na região de Botucatu, Estado de São Paulo. Os modelos de integração, com discretização de 6 em 6 h, apresentaram resultados satisfatórios na estimativa de graus-dia. As metodologias tradicionais apresentaram desempenhos satisfatórios quanto à estimativa de grausdia com base na curva de temperatura horária para cada dia e para os agrupamentos de três, sete, 15 e 30 dias. Pelo método numérico de integração, a região de Botucatu, Estado de São Paulo, apresentou disponibilidade térmica anual média de 1.070,6 GD para a cultura da cana-de-açúcar.

The development of projects related to the yield of various crops has been greatly enhanced with the incorporation of mathematical models as well as essential and more consistent equations which enable a prediction and greater approximation to their actual behavior, thus reducing error in estimate. Among the operations requiring further investigation are those related to crop growth, characterized by the ideal temperature for addition of dry matter. Due to the wide use of mathematical methods for representing, analyzing and attaining degree-day estimation as well as the great importance of sugarcane in the Brazilian economy, we carried out an evaluation of the mathematical models and numerical integration methods commonly used for estimating the availability of degrees-day for this crop in the region of Botucatu, in São Paulo State, Brazil. Integration models with discretization every 6 hours have shown satisfactory results in degree-day estimation. Conventional methodologies have shown satisfactory results when the estimation of degrees-day was based on the time-temperature curve for each day and for groups of 3, 7, 15 and 30 days. Through numerical integration method, the region of Botucatu showed a annual thermal availability average from 1,070.6 degrees-day for the sugarcane.

O Brasil é o maior produtor de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.) do mundo. Mas, existe uma grande preocupação com o sistema de colheita utilizado nesta cultura, pois é prática comum a colheita manual com a pré-queima do palhiço. Autoridades brasileiras têm aprovado leis proibindo a queimada nos canaviais. Entretanto, a colheita mecanizada com cana crua cria novos problemas com a permanência do resíduo no solo. Assim, muitos estudos têm sido propostos para o uso deste resíduo para geração de energia. A maior dificuldade para o uso desta biomassa está no custo de coletar e transferir o resíduo do campo para o centro de processamento. Para análise da viabilidade deste sistema há a necessidade de um estudo do balanço econômico do processo. O objetivo deste trabalho é desenvolver um modelo matemático que auxilie na escolha das variedades de cana a serem plantadas, de forma a minimizar o custo do processo de transferência da biomassa residual de colheita e avaliar economicamente o uso deste material, colocando restrições sobre a produção de sacarose e limitações da área para plantio e considerando as distâncias entre os talhões e o centro de processamento. Para isto, técnicas de programação linear multiobjetivo 0-1 foram utilizadas. Os resultados da aplicação mostram a viabilidade do uso deste modelo para auxílio na seleção de variedades, otimizando o lucro do uso da biomassa residual de colheita para geração de energia.

The fact that Brazil is the world's largest sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) producer, leads to a great concern about the cropping systems used, since the most common practice involves manual harvesting prior to straw burning. Brazilian authorities approved a law prohibiting the burning practice of crop residues prior to harvest. However mechanized harvest creates the new problem of how to deal with the residues. Many studies have proposed the use of these residues as an energy source. The major difficulty in its use is how to economically transport sugarcane harvested biomass from the farm to a processing center. The aim of this work was to develop a model to optimize plant variety selection, minimize the cost of the residual biomass transfer process, to evaluate the economics of using this material, and to address sucrose production and planting area constraints, considering distances from plot to processing center. For this 0-1 multiple objective linear programming techniques were used. The results show the viability of the model in selecting varieties, which provide increased profit from residual biomass use.

O palhiço derivado da colheita de cana-de-açúcar crua, com a redução gradativa das queimadas nos canaviais, tornou-se foco para os pesquisadores e produtores. As vantagens no recolhimento, na recuperação e no aproveitamento têm mobilizado pesquisadores de universidades, gerentes e diretores de usinas, interessados em encontrar a maneira mais produtiva, econômica e eficaz de realizar esse processo. O recolhimento do palhiço é feito em quatro estágios: primeiro o palhiço é enleirado, depois passado por uma máquina de compactação, posteriormente, acondicionado no caminhão e, finalmente, transportado para o centro de processamento. O estudo da viabilidade de aproveitamento desse resíduo para a geração de energia pode ser feito com base no custo e no balanço de energia, ou seja, a energia gerada por essa biomassa menos a energia consumida no processo. Neste trabalho, é proposto o uso de técnicas matemáticas para auxiliar na escolha das variedades da cana-de-açúcar a serem plantadas a fim de otimizar o balanço de energia da biomassa residual de colheita e minimizar o custo de coleta dessa biomassa do campo para o centro de produção, além de satisfazer as principais necessidades da usina.

With the gradual reduction in harvest burning, the straw derived from raw sugarcane harvest has become a focal point for researchers and producers alike. The advantages of retrieving, recovering and using this straw have motivated university researchers and sugar mill managers and directors to find the most productive, economic and efficient way to carry out such process. The retrievement of the straw is done in four phases: first it is joined and later bundled by a compacting machine, it is then loaded into trucks and finally transported to the processing center. The feasibility of using this residue in order to generate energy is linked to the cost and the energy balance, that is, the difference between energy generated by the biomass and the energy used in the process. In this work, it is proposed the use of mathematical techniques to assist in choosing the sugar cane varieties to be planted in order to optimize the residual biomass energy balance and minimize the cost in collecting the biomass and carrying from the field to the production center, in addition to satisfying the main needs of the mill.

Os biodigestores têm sido objetos de grande destaque devido a atual crise de energia e conseqüente busca de fontes alternativas. Outro fator que coloca os biodigestores em evidência é o intenso processo de modernização da agropecuária, que além da grande demanda de energia, produz um volume de resíduos animais e de culturas, que ocasiona muitas vezes problemas de ordem sanitária. O objetivo deste trabalho é fornecer uma ferramenta matemática para determinação de parâmetros para projetos de construção de biodigestores rurais, levando-se em consideração o atendimento de necessidades energéticas, obedecendo os dimensionamentos dos sistemas, fatores de rendimento e garantindo a funcionalidade. Para isto, foram formulados modelos de otimização não lineares, de fácil resolução, para os três principais tipos de biodigestores rurais. Com a resolução destes modelos são determinados a altura e o diâmetro que levem a um volume mínimo para cada tipo, com isto reduz-se a quantidade necessária de materiais de alvenaria e consequentemente o custo do biodigestor é diminuído.

Anaerobic digesters have been highlighted due to the current energy crisis and its consequent search for alternative energy sources, allied to the intense process of livestock farming and agriculture modernization, which besides demanding a lot of energy, produces a great amount of crop and animal residues, most of the times generating sanitary problems. The aim of this work is to provide a mathematical tool to establish parameters for projects of construction of rural digesters, considering the response to energy demand, the suitability of the dimensions of the systems, yield factors and the guarantee of functionality. Non-linear optimization models, of easy resolution, for the three main types of rural digesters were formulated in this way. With the resolution of these models one can determine the height and the diameter that lead to a minimum volume for each type, so reducing the necessary amount of masonry and, consequently, diminishing the cost.

No Brasil, a biomassa residual do cultivo de cana-de-açúcar é representada por folhas, palhas, ponteiros e frações de colmo que somam uma produção aproximada de 108 milhões de toneladas por ano; quantidade que permitiria a produção de 10,2 MWh de energia. Existem muitas cultivares como opção de plantio resultantes de programas de melhoramento visando à resistência a pragas, a doenças e à adaptação ao tipo de solo, cuja escolha é feita em virtude da produtividade física, bem como da produção de sacarose. Essa seleção pode ser auxiliada por modelos de otimização, visando minimizar a quantidade de resíduo de colheita, com ou sem imposições sobre a quantidade de energia obtida da biomassa. Pode, também, ser auxiliada pela maximização da quantidade de energia da biomassa residual com imposições sobre a quantidade de resíduo a ser gerada. A decisão sobre qual modelo deve ser usado é determinada pelo administrador da empresa com auxílio de alguns critérios. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar três modelos e o lucro alcançado com o uso da energia gerada por essa biomassa. Os resultados indicaram o modelo III, que prevê a maximização da geração de energia pela biomassa na escolha de cultivares, considerando a área disponível para o plantio, a produção de sacarose e a produção de biomassa em quatro anos de cultivo. O lucro obtido com o uso desse modelo foi calculado em 939 US$/ha.ano.

In Brazil, the residual biomass of the sugarcane cultivation is represented by leaves, straw, tips and stalk fractions that together represent a production of about 108 million tons per year. Such amount could allow the production of 10.2 MWh of energy. There are many sugarcane cultivars resulting from improvement programs seeking resistance to pests, diseases and adaptation to the soil type. Their choice is made in function of the physical productivity as well as the sucrose production. That selection can be aided by optimization models, seeking to minimize the amount of crop residue with or without impositions about the amount of obtained energy from the biomass. It can also be aided by the maximization of the amount of energy of the residual biomass with impositions on the amount of residue to be generated. The decision on which model should be used is determined by the company administrator. Such decision can be made with aid of some approaches. The objective of this work is to present the profit in the use of the energy generated by that biomass as a decision criteria in the choice of the models. The results indicated the model III, that foresees the maximization of energy generation from the biomass with choice of cultivars taking into account the available area for the plantation, the sucrose production and the biomass production in four years of cultivation. The profit with the use of that model was calculated as being 939 US$/ha.year.
