RESUMO As alterações antrópicas nas bacias hidrográficas costeiras afetam a quantidade e a qualidade da água dos estuários. A partir de um modelo analítico de intrusão salina e do balanço de cargas, avaliamos os efeitos da descarga de efluentes projetada para uma estação de tratamento de esgoto (ETE) (média de 285 L·s−1 e pico de 495 L·s−1) em um estuário insular. A intrusão salina na maré baixa, sem descarga antrópica, aumentará em 22%, ao passo que com o aumento da descarga haverá reduções de 16% e 28%. A redução da intrusão salina poderá afetará processos biogeoquímicos e a distribuição de espécies em regiões mais a montante do estuário. Quando a ETE atingir sua vazão média projetada, aumentará suas cargas de DBO e fósforo em 90% e 82%, respectivamente, em relação à carga atual. Com o aumento da vazão da ETE haverá ampliação das atuais áreas em condição de hipóxica e anóxica, piorando a situação atual deste estuário já comprometido. Para que a ETE traga os ganhos ambientais esperados é necessário considerar a capacidade suporte do corpo receptor.

ABSTRACT Anthropic changes in coastal watersheds affect the quantity and quality of water in estuaries. Based on an analytical model of saline intrusion and load balance, we have evaluated the effects of effluent discharge (mean of 285 L·s−1 and peak of 495 L·s−1) from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in an island estuary. Saline intrusion at low tide, without actual anthropic discharge, will increase by 22%, whereas with increasing discharge, reductions of 16% and 28%. The reduction of saline intrusion may affect biogeochemical processes and the distribution of species in regions further up the estuary. When the WWTP reaches the mean projected discharge, it will increase its BOD and phosphorus loads by 90% and 82%, respectively, in relation to the current load. With the increase of WWTP discharge, there will be an expansion of hypoxic and anoxic conditions over the current areas, worsening the condition of this already jeopardized estuary. For the WWTP to lead to the expected environmental gains, it is necessary to consider the carrying capacity of the receiving body.

RESUMO A Lagoa da Conceição, localizada no sul do Brasil, é um ecossistema costeiro semifechado que apresenta eventos sazonais de hipoxia e anoxia na região central, caracterizada pela coluna de água estratificada e sítio de retenção e mineralização da matéria orgânica. Este estudo investigou a dinâmica da coluna de água da região central da Lagoa da Conceição (CLC) em relação às variáveis físicas, químicas e biológicas, com o objetivo de entender os eventos de hipoxia e anoxia. As águas de superfície, haloclina e fundo foram avaliadas em três pontos amostrais. As amostras foram coletadas em triplicata durante o verão, outono e inverno de 2014. Eventos de hipoxia e/ou anoxia ocorreram somente nas águas de haloclina (3 m) e fundo (4 m) do verão. Valores próximos a 100% de uso aparente de oxigênio indicaram processos de mineralização nas águas de fundo. O menor valor do índice de estratificação vertical foi observado em agosto (inverno austral), que foi correlacionado com a velocidade (14,7 m.s-1) e direção (quadrante sul) do vento. As concentrações de nutrientes foram maiores no inverno, devido ao aumento dos processos de mistura e remineralização da matéria orgânica. Este foi o primeiro estudo a avaliar a dinâmica dos eventos de hipoxia/anoxia na CLC em relação à distribuição dos nutrientes e estrutura física da coluna de água.

ABSTRACT The Conceição Lagoon, located in south Brazil, is a semi-enclosed coastal ecosystem that has seasonal hypoxic and anoxic conditions in its vertically stratified central region, characterized as a site of retention and mineralization of organic matter. This study investigates water column dynamics in the central region of the Conceição Lagoon (CCL) and its relation to physical and chemical variables, in order to understand the hypoxic and anoxic events. Surface, halocline and bottom waters were evaluated at three sampling sites along the CCL. The samples were collected in triplicate during the summer, fall and winter of 2014. Hypoxic and/or anoxic events occurred in the summer (1/21) at the halocline (3 m) and bottom (4 m) waters, and in the fall (2/5) in the bottom water (4.5 m). Positive values of apparent oxygen utilization showed mineralization processes in the halocline and bottom waters. The lowest vertical stratification index was recorded in August (southern winter), which was associated with wind speed (14.7 m.s-1) and direction (southern quadrant). Nutrient concentrations were higher in winter, related to increasing of water mixing. This was the first study to evaluate the dynamics of hypoxic and anoxic events in the CCL and how nutrients respond to the physical structure of the water column.

Resumo Os sistemas fluviais são dotados de características, como a heterogeneidade e a variabilidade, que permitem a qualificação de uma paisagem fluvial. Os protocolos de avaliação rápida vêm se mostrando ferramentas úteis para a caracterização da integridade, principalmente na escala de trecho de rio. O objetivo deste trabalho foi aplicar três protocolos e avaliar o desempenho deles entre si e em comparação com os resultados obtidos por métodos analíticos de avaliação da qualidade da água e da comunidade de macroinvertebrados aquáticos. O escalonamento multidimensional não-métrico (nMDS) foi aplicado com os parâmetros de qualidade da água e o Índice do Estado Trófico (IET), e com os dados de abundância de macroinvertebrados bentônicos. Também foram calculadas correlações entre índices e os resultados finais dos protocolos. A viabilidade de utilização dos protocolos para caracterização do habitat se confirmou, pois houve compatibilidade entre os resultados nos três procedimentos. Apesar das particularidades, todos abordam de alguma forma os aspectos gerais que caracterizam a integridade dos rios, indicando a condição do habitat que melhor suporta a biodiversidade aquática em rios urbanos.

Abstract Fluvial systems are endowed with features such as heterogeneity and variability which allow the classification of a fluvial landscape. Rapid assessment protocols have been useful tools for the characterization of integrity, especially in river segment scale. The objective of this paper was to apply three protocols in order to evaluate their performance in comparison with each other and with the results obtained by analytical methods of water quality assessment and an evaluation of the aquatic macro-invertebrate community. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) was applied using water quality parameters, trophic state index (IET), and abundance data of benthic macro-invertebrates. In addition, the study determined correlations between the index and the protocols' final scores. The protocols' feasibility for habitat characterization was confirmed, since the results were compatible for all procedures applied. Despite some particularities, each protocol offered a particular description of general aspects that affect river integrity, indicating which habitat conditions best support aquatic biodiversity in urban rivers.

A dinâmica sazonal e espacial da biomassa microfitobêntica em uma planície arenosa intermareal (25º32'S; 48º24'W) foi investigada mensalmente de setembro de 1995 a julho de 1996. A concentração de clorofila-a e feofitina-a, a temperatura, salinidade, concentração de nitrogênio inorgânico e fosfato na água intersticial, além das características do sedimento, foram inferidas na região superior (HW), mediana (MW) e inferior (LW) da planície. A biomassa microfitobêntica apresentou gradientes sazonal e espacial bem definidos. Maiores concentrações de clorofila-a foram registradas na região superior da planície entre marés (HW, de 11.78 µg.gsed-1 até 38.18 µg.gsed-1), decrescendo em direção a região inferior da planície (LW, de 6.23 µg.gsed-1 a 18.23 µg.gsed-1). A sazonalidade microfitobêntica foi determinada principalmente pela turbulência da coluna de água, influenciada pelos eventos atmosféricos. As propriedades do sedimento e as concentrações de nutrientes foram significantes para a distribuição espacial e sazonal dos pigmentos na planície entre marés.

Seasonal and spatial dynamics of the microphytobenthic biomass on a subtropical intertidal sand flat (25°32'S; 48°24'W) was investigated monthly from September 1995 to July 1996. Chlorophyll-a and Phaeophytin-a contents, temperature, salinity, inorganic nitrogen and phosphate pore water concentrations and sediment characteristics were assessed in the upper (HW), middle (MW) and lower (LW) sections of the flat. Microphytobenthic biomass content showed a conspicuous seasonal and spatial gradient. Higher chlorophyll-a contents were registered in the HW section of the tidal flat (from 11.78 µg.gsed-1 to 38.18 µg.gsed-1) decreasing towards the LW section (from 6.23 µg.gsed-1 to 18.23 µg.gsed-1). Microphytobenthic seasonality was determined mainly by turbulence of the water column, which was influenced by atmospheric events. The sediment properties and nutrient concentrations had a significant effect on the spatial and seasonal distribution of pigments on the intertidal flat.
