Os autores afirmam a relevância do reflorestamento de manguezais para projetos de seqüestro de carbono atmosférico, dentro dos princípios do chamado mecanismo de desenvolvimento limpo (MDL),definidos em diversas arenas técnicas e políticas internacionais, dentro da Convenção de Mudanças Climáticas. Descrevem um projeto de pesquisa em andamento, que inclui estudo de caso focalizado em manguezais da laguna de Itaipu (Niterói, RJ), cujo objetivo é selecionar e fazer medições preliminares de parâmetros ecológicos e socioambientais relevantes para a valoração econômica e financeira dos benefícios do reflorestamento. A seleção e as medições servirão como estudo de viabilidade para que projetos semelhantes se qualifiquem para obter apoio financeiro e alcançar sucesso técnico, gerando benefícios ambientais e sociais.

The article argues that the reforestation of mangrove swamps is of relevance to projects for sequestering atmospheric carbon, within the principles of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) currently being defined in different technical and political arenas as part of the Convention on Climate Change. The text describes a research project currently under way that includes a case study of mangrove swamps in the Itaipu Lagoon in Niterói, RJ. The project's goal is to select and take preliminary measurements of the ecological and socio-environmental parameters pertinent to the economic and financial valuation of the benefits of reforestation. These parameters will serve as part of feasibility studies that determine whether similar projects up for financing by the CDM qualify for financial support and whether they will achieve technical success that brings environmental and social benefits to the various social actors involved.

Propõe-se que os valores de uso de recursos naturais identificados devem ser complementados por investigações sobre a importância que os cidadãos comuns atribuem aos ecossistemas. Isso implica em computar o valor de existência, que inclui componentes subjetivos da cultura. Aplicando o Método de Valoração Contingente (MVC) e agregando a ele o componente do trabalho voluntário, o texto estima o valor de existência de um ecossistema, comparando a Disposição a Pagar (DAP) com a Disposição ao Trabalho Voluntário (DATv) pela recuperação e/ou preservação da laguna de Itaipu, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. As cifras encontradas foram R$5.563.320,00 usando a DAP e R$19.980.000,00 usando DATv, revelando um significativo diferencial atribuível à disposição a trabalhar voluntariamente.

It is sustained that use values of natural resources must be complemented by investigations about the importance that common citizens attribute to ecosystems. This leads to the computation of the existence value, which involves subjective cultural components. Applying the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM), complemented by the component of voluntary work, the text presents an estimate of the existence value of an ecosystem, comparing Willingness to Pay with the Willingness to Work voluntarily in favor of the recovery and/or preservation of the Itaipu lagoon, in Niterói, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The figures reached were US$2,225,328.00, by using Willingness to Pay, and US$7,992,000.00, by using Willingness to Work voluntarily. The implication is that taking into account the predisposition to voluntary work adds a significant difference to the value attributed to the lagoon.

A fístula traqueoesofágica como complicação tardia de traqueostomia é uma ocorrência rara, com incidência menor do que 1%, mas que deve ser conhecida, diagnosticada e tratada rapidamente, para que se evite evolução desfavorável. Relata-se o caso de uma mulher de 41 anos que permaneceu com traqueostomia prolongada, devido a acidente vascular cerebral. Após a alta hospitalar, apresentou insuficiência respiratória aguda e observou-se a saída de material da sonda nasogástrica traqueostomia. O diagnóstico de fístula traqueoesofágica foi feito por exame endoscópico e a paciente foi submetida a uma traqueoplastia, com boa evolução.

Tracheoesophageal fistula as a late complication of tracheostomy is rare and its incidence is less than 1%. Nonetheless, it should be known, diagnosed, and promptly treated in order to prevent an unfavorable evolution. The authors report on a 41-year-old female who had had tracheostomy a long time before, due to a cerebrovascular accident. Following hospital discharge, the patient presented acute respiratory insufficiency and it was observed that some material was secreted through the tracheostomy nasogastric probe. Tracheoesophageal fistula was endoscopically diagnosed, the patient was submitted to a tracheoplasty and showed good evolution.
