This work was undertaken in the Velhas River Basin, in the municipalities of Rio Acima, Nova Lima, Raposos and Sabará, upstream of the city of Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Velhas River provides the public water supply for much of this region. The gold and iron mining activities in the Velhas River yield considerable amounts of suspended solids as well as metals to the hydrological system of the region. Thus, the present study sought to evaluate the concentrations of arsenic and trace metals in the waters and their distribution and mobility in sediment by BCR sequential extraction. Arsenic concentrations in the water samples were between 78.1 and 85.3 μg L-1, which exceeded 10 μg L-1 (maximum limit permitted by Brazilian environmental regulations for water destined to human consumption, CONAMA Resolution 357/2005). The sequential extraction of the sediment showed considerable amounts of As (20%), Cd (55%), Co (56%), Cr (16%), Cu (23%), Ni (29%), Pb (47%) and Zn (71%) associated with the geochemical fractions considered potentially available for the remobilization to the aquatic environment. The presence of the elements in these fractions indicated high ecotoxicological risk and potential harm to the health of the local population.

On November 5, 2015, the Fundão dam ruptured which caused the spill of a large quantity of tailings from the extraction of iron ores to the Gualaxo do Norte, Carmo and Doce Rivers. Seven months prior to the rupture, our group had collected water and sediment samples at 13 points along the Tripuí Creek and the entire length of the Carmo River. Six months after deposition of the mud, new samples were collected in the Carmo River. Thus, the present study sought to evaluate the concentrations of trace elements in the waters and their distribution and mobility in sediment by BCR sequential extraction before and after the deposition of the tailings mud. Arsenic concentrations in the water samples were between 10.4 and 50.4 µg L-1, which exceeded 10 ug L-1 (maximum limit permitted by Brazilian environmental regulations for water destined for human consumption) . The tailing mud layer on the sediments caused concentration increases of As (20%), Cd (13%), Co (5%), Cr (9%), Cu (11%), Ni (4%), Pb (7%) and Zn (19%) in the easily remobilized fractions. The presence of the elements in these fractions was indicative of high ecotoxicological risk and potential harm to the health of the local population.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a presença dos metais pesados Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni e Zn, em solos agrícolas, água de irrigação e alguns vegetais, provenientes de áreas olerícolas do estado de Minas Gerais. As amostras foram submetidas a digestão ácida e os teores de metais pesados determinados em um espectrofotômetro de emissão de plasma. A maior parte das amostras de solo apresentou baixos teores totais de metais pesados não indicando acumulação desses elementos, à exceção de Cr e Cd, que exibiram teores totais os quais justificam análises complementares; entretanto, para esses elementos, os dados de extração com DTPA foram próximos de zero indicando sua baixa disponibilidade. Nas amostras de água apenas os elementos Cd e Pb não foram identificados. Considerando-se os teores máximos legais permitidos, poucas foram as amostras que superaram os limites. Nas amostras de olerícolas, os teores de Cd, Cr e Ni nem se aproximaram do limite crítico e os teores dos demais elementos ultrapassaram levemente, em sua ampla maioria, o limite considerado. De maneira geral, os dados indicaram que as amostras de solo, água e olerícolas analisadas não estão contaminadas por metais pesados.

The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni and Zn) in agricultural soils, irrigation waters and some vegetable crops in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Samples were submitted to an acid digestion and the heavy metal contents were determined using an ICP-OES. The majority of soil samples presented low heavy metal content, and did not indicate accumulation of these elements in soil, with the exception of Cr and Cd, which presented contents justifying complementary analysis. However, for these elements, the DTPA extraction data were close to zero, indicating their low availability. In water samples the presence of Cd and Pb was not detected. Considering the maximum contents permitted by the Brazilian legislation, only a few samples were above the limits. In the vegetables samples, contents of Cd, Cr and Ni not even approached the critical limit, and the majority of the other elements barely exceeded the considered limit. In general, the data show that the soil, water and vegetables samples analyzed were not contaminated by heavy metals.

Experimento em colunas de solo foi conduzido, objetivando-se avaliar o efeito da aplicação de gesso e gesso + calcário, na recuperação de solos salino-sódicos do Perímetro Irrigado de Custódia, PE. Os tratamentos foram dispostos em um delineamento em blocos casualizados, com arranjo fatorial de quatro solos, dois métodos de aplicação de gesso e gesso + calcário (aplicados na superfície e incorporados aos primeiros 5 cm da coluna de solo), duas combinações dos corretivos (100% de gesso + 0% de calcário e 80% de gesso + 20% de calcário), calculados com base na necessidade de gesso dos solos, e quatro faixas de granulometria de gesso (2,0-1,0, 1,0-0,5, 0,5-0,3 e < 0,3 mm), com três repetições. A quantidade de gesso determinada em laboratório pelo método de Schoonover M-1, mostrou-se adequada no deslocamento do sódio trocável do complexo de troca. A eficiência do gesso e da mistura gesso + calcário na recuperação dos solos revelou-se superior quando os corretivos foram incorporados aos primeiros 5 cm das colunas de solo. Entre as granulometrias de gesso, as frações mais finas (0,5-0,3 mm e < 0,3 mm) apresentaram melhor desempenho na substituição do sódio trocável do complexo de troca.

An experiment was carried out in soil columns with the objective of evaluating the effect of application of gypsum and limestone on reclamation of the saline-sodic soils in the Irrigation district of Custódia, PE. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design in a factorial scheme of four soils, two methods for applications of gypsum and gypsum plus limestone (applied on surface and incorporated into the first five cm of the soil column), two combinations of the chemical amendments (100% gypsum plus 0% limestone and 80% gypsum plus 20% limestone), calculated on the basis of gypsum requirement of soil and four granulometry gypsum strips (2.0-1.0; 1.0-0.5; 0.5-0.3 and < 0.3 mm) with three replications. The gypsum amount determined by the method of Schoonover M-1, under laboratory conditions, shows to be adequate in the displacement of the exchangeable sodium of the soil exchange complex. The efficiency of the gypsum as well as the gypsum plus lime mixture in reclamation of the soils shows to be superior, when the amendments are incorporated into the first 5 cm of the soil columns. Among the gypsum granulometry, the finest fractions, (0.5-0.3 mm and < 0.3 mm), presented better performance in replacing the exchangeable sodium of the exchange complex.

Objetivando-se avaliar o efeito da aplicação de corretivos químicos sobre as propriedades físicas e químicas, bem como na recuperação de solos afetados por sais do Perímetro Irrigado de Custódia, no Estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, realizou-se um experimento em colunas de solo, instaladas no Laboratório de Salinidade do Solo da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco. Os tratamentos foram dispostos em um delineamento em blocos casualizados, com arranjamento fatorial de quatro solos, dois métodos de aplicação de gesso e gesso + calcário (aplicados na superfície e incorporados nos primeiros 5 cm da coluna de solo), duas combinações dos corretivos (100% de gesso + 0% de calcário e 80% de gesso + 20% de calcário), calculados com base na necessidade de gesso dos solos, e quatro faixas de granulometria de gesso (2,0 - 1,0, 1,0 -0,5, 0,5 - 0,3 e < 0,3 mm) com três repetições. No extrato da pasta saturada dos solos foram avaliados a condutividade elétrica (CE) e os cátions solúveis. A aplicação de gesso e da mistura de gesso + calcário revelou-se uma técnica eficaz de correção da sodicidade dos solos em estudo, indicada por um efeito positivo sobre as características físicas e químicas dos solos, podendo ser recomendadas com fontes de cálcio para recuperação de solos salino-sódicos. Entre as granulometrias de gesso, as mais finas, (0,5 - 0,3 mm e < 0,3 mm), apresentaram melhor desempenho na lixiviação dos sais e na conseqüente redução na relação de adsorsão de sódio (RAS) do extrato de saturação.

With the objective of evaluating the effect of the application of chemical amendments on the physical and chemical properties as well as on reclamation of the salt-affected soils in the "Perímetro Irrigado de Custódia", in Pernambuco state, Brazil, an experiment was carried out in soil columns installed at the Soil Salinity Laboratory of the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design in a factorial scheme consisting of four soils, two methods of applications of gypsum and gypsum + limestone (applied on the surface and incorporated into the first 5 cm of the soil column), two combinations of the chemical amendments (100% gypsum and 80% gypsum + 20% limestone), calculated on the basis of gypsum requirement of soils and four granulometry gypsum fractions (2.0 - 1.0; 1.0 - 0.5; 0.5 - 0.3 and < 0.3 mm) with three replications. In the saturation extract the electrical conductivity and the soluble cations were determined. The application of gypsum and the mixture of gypsum + limestone showed to be efficient for correction of soil sodicity, which was indicated by a positive effect on the physical and chemical characteristics of the soils, therefore these may be recommended as calcium source for the reclamation of the saline-sodic soils. Among the gypsum granulometry, the fine fractions (0.5 - 0.3 and < 0.3 mm), presented better performance in leaching salt and in the reduction of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) in saturation extract.

Para aproveitamento das águas residuárias da suinocultura na fertirrigação de culturas agrícolas, principalmente no caso do uso de irrigação localizada, torna-se necessária a remoção dos sólidos em suspensão e de parte dos dissolvidos. Como, para esse tipo de água o uso de filtros convencionais de areia não é possível, torna-se necessário o estudo de materiais alternativos para uso como filtros. Como materiais filtrantes foram avaliadas a casca de arroz, a casca de frutos do cafeeiro, o bagaço de cana-de-açúcar, o sabugo de milho triturado, a serragem de madeira e o fino de carvão vegetal. As colunas de filtragem foram constituídas de tubos de PVC de 100 mm de diâmetro e comprimento de 600 mm, sendo preenchidas com o material até a altura de 500 mm e com compressão de 12.490 N m-2. Avaliaram-se as alterações químicas e físicas ocorridas no material após seu uso como filtro no tratamento de 15 L de águas residuárias da suinocultura. Os materiais filtrantes que apresentaram maior capacidade de retenção de poluentes foram o bagaço de cana-de-açúcar e a serragem de madeira.

For the utilization of wastewater from swine confinement in fertigation of agricultural crops, mainly in the case of localized irrigation, it is necessary to remove the suspended solids and some of the dissolved ones. Since the use of conventional sand filters for wastewater is not possible there is a need for a study concerning alternative materials that might be used as wastewater filters. The following filtering materials were evaluated: rice husk, coffee husk, sugarcane bagasse, milled corncob, sawdust and fine charcoal. The filtration columns consisting of PVC tubes with 100 mm diameter and 600 mm length were filled with filtering material up to 500 mm height and compression of 12,490 N m-2. Evaluations were performed for the chemical and physical changes occurring in the material following its use as a filter in treatment with swine wastewater. The filtering materials showing a higher retention capacity for the pollutants were the sugarcane bagasse and sawdust.
