Abstract Ethnography has been recognized as a valuable methodological resource in Information Science research. In this study, we describe Information Science scientific articles on ethnography — and others that use ethnographic methodologies — indexed in the Web of Science database. Bibliometric research found 803 articles indexed in the database’s Core Collection, covering the period from 1979 to 2020. The analysis of these articles shows that 2016 concentrates the highest number of publications (65), and points to Michael D. Myers as the most productive and most cited author in WoS. Among the 15 most productive institutions with research on this topic, the University of Toronto stands out with slightly more than half of the total number of articles. Moreover, the Health Sciences stand out with articles focused on management and information systems. This study thus contributes to understanding the difficulties of research in this field, which result from the transformations and obstacles common to the various ethnographic research approaches and its emerging nature in Information Science.

Resumo A etnografia tem sido adotada como recurso metodológico nas pesquisas do campo da Ciência da Informação e digna de reconhecimento como forma metodológica aplicada nesse domínio. Neste artigo, o conjunto dos artigos científicos sobre etnografia ou adeptos de seus procedimentos metodológicos na Ciência da Informação, indexados na base de dados Web of Science, são caracterizados. Após uma pesquisa bibliométrica, 803 artigos indexados na Core Collection da referida base de dados são analisados, abarcando o período de 1979 a 2020. O ano 2016 é o de maior concentração, com um total de 65 artigos, e Michael D. Myers é o autor mais produtivo e que apresenta artigos mais citados na base. Dentre as 15 instituições mais produtivas na temática na WoS, a University of Toronto destaca-se com pouco mais da metade dos artigos analisados. O campo da Saúde, com artigos focados em gestão e sistemas de informação, também se sobressai. Este estudo contribui para a compreensão das dificuldades presentes nas pesquisas da área, como resultado das transformações e obstáculos comuns a pesquisas etnográficas em suas diversas modalidades, assim como seu caráter incipiente na área da Ciência da Informação.

Objetiva analisar a visibilidade dos periódicos que publicam pesquisas sobre estudos métricos da informação, a partir de indicadores de impacto presentes nas bases indexadoras Scopus e Web Of Science (WOS). Os periódicos selecionados representam o domínio de estudos métricos da informação na base SciELO e estão presentes nas outras referidas bases, das quais foram extraídos seus respectivos indicadores de citação. Identifica o número total de publicações de cada periódico e o número total de suas publicações relacionadas aos estudos métricos (EMI) no período de 2009 a 2013, e o número total de citações recebidas por cada periódico e suas citações aos artigos de EMI na janela temporal 2009-2016, evidenciando a média de citação por periódicos, áreas e países, na temática e geral. Logo após, compara as medidas de citação desses artigos, dadas pelo Scimago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) da Scopus e pelo Journal Citation Reports (JCR) da WOS, apontando as revistas, áreas e países com maior impacto na temática e no geral. Conclui-se que, a maioria das revistas obtiveram maior quantidade de citações na Scopus em detrimento à WOS, sugerindo maior visibilidade na primeira para os artigos que tratam de estudos métricos. Situação semelhante ocorre quando se considera toda a produção científica das revistas e suas citações recebidas, em relação ao impacto geral que apresentam. Em termos relativos, observa-se que, em ambas as bases, as revistas de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas apresentam o maior percentual de artigos sobre EMI em detrimento às revistas de outras disciplinas. Por fim, considera que as políticas de indexação na base Scopus são responsáveis por sua cobertura mais ampla e pela maior visibilidade de seus periódicos, que estão disponíveis em diferentes idiomas

This study aims to analyze the visibility of the journals that publish research on metric studies (MS) by using the impact indicators of these journals, present at the databases Scopus and Web of Science (WOS). The selected journals represent the domain metric studies in the SciELO database and are present in the other databases, which were taken from their citation indicators. The study identifies the total number of each journal and the total number of publications related to metric studies in the 2009-2013 period, and the total number of citations received by each journal and his quote to MS articles in the time window 2009-2016, showing the average quotation by journal, areas and countries in the thematic and in their general publication. Soon after, it compares the citation measures given by the SJR of Scopus and the JCR WOS, pointing journals, areas and countries with the greatest impact on the theme and overall. It concludes that the majority of the journals have a higher number of citations in Scopus over the WOS, suggesting greater visibility in the first database to the articles about with metric studies. A similar situation occurs when considering any scientific journal and their citations received in relation to their overall impact. In relative terms, it observes that, in both databases, the Applied Social Sciences journals presents the highest percentage of articles on EMI in detriment to the other disciplines journals. Finally, it considers that Scopus indexing policies are responsible for their wider coverage and greater visibility of their journals, which are available in different languages

Metric studies of information are viewed as a field that cuts across several different areas. The present paper is aimed at visualizing the configuration of metric studies of information in papers indexed in the database Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) in the period 1978-2013. A diachronic analysis was conducted of the distribution of the periodic scientific production of these studies to identify the most outstanding authors in the topic, the scientific collaboration network, and the main areas, journals, languages and countries in which the topic is present. The study sample consisted of 768 papers from the SciELO database containing terms related to the field. Output indicators were generated, as well as a matrix with absolute frequencies of co-authored papers. An increase in the number of papers took place in the early 2000s. The 42 most productive authors published 167 papers, representing 21.7 % of the corpus. Sixteen of the most productive authors were Brazilian. Collaboration was outstanding between C. Wanden-Berghe and J. Sanz-Valero, J. A. Araújo-Ruiz and R. Arencibia-Jorge, and C. L. M. Silva and R. R. Guarido Filho. The most prominent journal was the Cuban Journal of Health Sciences Information, classified within the area of Applied Social Sciences, with 24 % prevalence in the corpus. The Health area represented 6 %. The research showed the importance of the Health area in the development of metric studies of information. The present study intends to contribute to the development of methodologies more accurately reflecting the fields of knowledge, pointing to the need for absolute, standardized indicators more thoroughly describing the phenomenon of scientific collaboration.

Los estudios métricos de la información se consideran un campo que permea diferentes áreas. El objetivo de este trabajo es visualizar la configuración de los estudios métricos de la información en los artículos indexados en la base de datos Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SciELO), en el período 1978-2013. Se analizó, de forma diacrónica, la distribución de la producción periódica científica de estos estudios para identificar los autores más destacados en la temática, la red de colaboración científica y las principales áreas, revistas, idiomas y países en los cuales el tema está presente. Se utilizaron 768 artículos de la base SciELO con términos relacionados con el campo. Se generaron indicadores de producción y una matriz con frecuencias absolutas de coautorías. El crecimiento del número de artículos ocurrió a inicios de la década del 2000; los 42 autores más productivos fueron responsables de 167 artículos, equivalentes al 21,7 % de la producción. Entre los autores más productivos, 16 eran brasileños. Se destacó la colaboración entre C. Wanden-Berghe y J. Sanz-Valero, J. A. Araújo-Ruiz y R. Arencibia-Jorge y C. L. M. Silva y R. R. Guarido Filho. La revista más destacada fue la Revista Cubana de Información en Ciencias de la Salud, categorizada en el área de Ciencias Sociales Aplicadas, cuya prevalencia en el corpus fue del 24 %, y el área de la Salud representó el 6 %. La investigación reflejó la importancia del área de la Salud en el desarrollo de los estudios métricos de la información. Este estudio procura contribuir con el desarrollo de metodologías que reflejen con más exactitud los campos de conocimiento, apuntando hacia la necesidad de indicadores absolutos y normalizados que describan de forma más completa el fenómeno de colaboración científica.

Resumo Estudo sobre modos de organização de pesquisas por opções metodológicas. Objetiva evidenciar como a organização da produção científica por opções metodológicas na área de Ciência da Informação contribui para identificação de características de produção e realização de análises de domínio. Estuda categorias de pesquisa e propõe uma classificação consoante cinco critérios: fins, meios, enfoques, técnicas utilizadas e análises realizadas. Aplica empiricamente a proposta em um corpus do domínio da Ciência da Informação, representado por 689 artigos, 10% da produção de artigos indexados na Base de Dados Referenciais de Artigos de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação de 1972 a 2010. Utiliza análise de conteúdo para identificar as opções metodológicas dos autores no corpus selecionado. Conclui que: na pesquisa quanto aos fins, relativa ao seu grau de profundidade, há predominância dos estudos exploratórios; na pesquisa quanto aos meios, pesquisas bibliográfica e documental apresentam maior grau de incidência; observação sistemática, questionário e entrevista são as técnicas preferencialmente utilizadas; análise documental e de conteúdo são as análises mais recor-rentes; sobressaem pesquisas dos enfoques teórico, histórico e bibliométrico. Observa ocorrência de conjunção do uso de opções metodológicas e explicitação das correntes epistemológicas, como estudos afinados ao positivismo na década de 1970 e, na década seguinte, influência da fenomenologia, que ampliou o uso de métodos nas pesquisas qualitativas.

Abstract The article focuses on the ways of organizing studies according to their methodological choices in the Base Referencial de Artigos de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação (Reference Database of Journal articles in Information Science). We highlight how the organization of scientific production by the methodological choices in Information Science contributes to the identification of its production features and domain analysis. We studied research categories and proposed five classification criteria: research purposes, approaches, focus, techniques and type of analysis. The proposal of a corpus in Information Science is empirically applied, represented by 689 articles, 10% of the production indexed in Base Referencial de Artigos de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação from 1972 to 2010. We adopt content analysis to interpret the methodological choices of authors identified in the corpus. The results point out that exploratory studies are more predominant when considering the research purpose; regarding the research approach, bibliographic and documentary studies are more predominant; systematic observation, questionnaire and interview were the most widely used techniques; document analysis and content analysis are the most widely used types of analysis; the research focus of theoretical, historical and bibliometric studies are more predominant. We found that some studies use two methodological choices and explicit epistemological approaches, such as the studies following the positivist approach in the 1970s, and those influenced by the phenomenological approach in the 1980s, which increased the use of methods in qualitative research.

Este artigo analisa as dimensões de pesquisa expressas concretamente na literatura da área de Organização do Conhecimento. Considera que a produção científica desenvolvida em determinados contextos sociais e momentos históricos reflete as mudanças e contradições desse contexto, tanto em sua organização interna quanto em suas aplicações. Questiona como se configuram as relações entre as opções metodológicas adotadas nessa literatura e o processo dinâmico de pesquisa sob a ótica multidimensional. Ilustra esse processo de análise a partir de um corpus de 105 artigos recuperados da Base Referencial de Artigos de Periódicos em Ciência da Informação, entre 2003 e 2012. Utiliza os softwares Endnote e Excel para organização e análise dos dados coletados. Categoriza os artigos de pesquisa sob o ponto de vista de seu objeto e delineamento metodológico, bem como de suas relações teóricas por meio de estudo de citação. Evidencia os autores mais expressivos e atuantes na área de Organização do Conhecimento no Brasil. Identifica os periódicos mais devotados ao tema e conclui que a produção científica brasileira sobre o tema distribui-se de maneira irregular ao longo do período analisado, tendo seu ápice no ano de 2011, durante o qual são publicados 18,27% dos artigos. Finaliza estabelecendo relações entre as correntes teóricas da Organização do Conhecimento e os enfoques e temáticas predominantes no corpus. Os enfoques de pesquisa de maior incidência foram o teórico e o linguístico, e o tipo de análise foi documental.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the research dimensions expressed in the literature in the field of knowledge organization. We consider that scientific investigation developed in certain social contexts and historical conjunctures reflects the changes and contradictions present in these contexts, both in its organization and applications. This process is illustrated from a corpus of 105 articles retrieved from the referential database of journal articles on Information Science between 2003 and 2012. Endnote and Excel software were used for organizing and analyzing the data collected. The articles are categorized according to their object and methodological approach, as well as their theoretical foundations through the study of citations. Throughout this investigation, we point out the most expressive and active authors in the field of knowledge organization in Brazil. We also identify the journals that are more devoted to the theme and we conclude that Brazilian scientific production on the theme is irregularly distributed over the period of time analyzed, peaking in 2011 when 18,27% of the total number of articles were published. We conclude by establishing the relationship between theoretical currents of knowledge organization and the prevalent approaches and themes found in the corpus. The focus of the most prevalent research approaches were the theoretical and linguistic approaches and the type of analysis was documentary.

Analisa a configuração epistemológica da Ciência da Informação (CI) com base na análise de citações da produção periódica brasileira da área. Da Base de Dados Referenciais de Artigos de Periódicos de Ciência da Informação (BRAPCI) seleciona 91 artigos que versam sobre Epistemologia da CI. Identifica os autores mais produtivos e procede à análises de citações. Representa graficamente a incidência de citações dos autores constituintes da base BRAPCI e dos teóricos basilares da Epistemologia e da CI que influenciaram a temática na literatura periódica nacional.

The article shows a study on the theoretical scenery related to epistemological questions of Information Science (IS) based on the theoretical context analysis of regular Brazilian production in this area. A total of 91 articles from the Reference Database of Information Science periodical articles (BRAPCI) were selected about the topic IS Epistemology. It identifies the ten most productive authors and proceeds with citation analysis; incidence of citations of the authors that compose the basis is graphically represented as well as the base theoreticians on epistemology that are more frequently cited in this corpus. It identifies the Brazilian most prominent authors in the theoretical context of IS, as well as the influences of the authors from the epistemological field on this area of literature in the period studied.

Analisa a figura da ética relacionada à formação profissional em informação. Aponta aspectos e questões evidenciados em análise de conteúdo da presença temática da ética expressa na literatura periódica em ciência da informação. Parte de um levantamento de artigos de periódicos, registrado em base de dados específica (BRAPCI), relativa ao período entre 1970 e 2006, composta de um total de 4212 artigos, publicados em 26 títulos. Após extração de um corpus, constituído de 37 artigos, procedentes de 16 títulos, revela as tendências investigativas sobre o tema, a fim de evidenciar como tem sido enfocada a ética e suas relações com a formação do profissional da informação, as temáticas a ela associadas e as principais questões levantadas pelos autores dos artigos. O conjunto de artigos selecionados foi analisado também pela freqüência dos descritores, periódicos de origem e ano de publicação. Registra a baixa ocorrência de discussões relativas à ética e sua importância para a formação dos profissionais da informação. Constata ainda a variedade de olhares para esse objeto, enfatizando sua relevância como elemento-chave da educação e do preparo de sujeitos para o mundo do trabalho.

It analyses ethics in relation to the professional education in the field of Information Science. It points out main aspects and questions of the matter as a result of a content analysis on ethics thematic presence in Information Science periodic literature. The starting point is an article survey in a specific database (BRAPCI), period 1970-2006, which includes 4212 articles, published by 26 periodicals. The corpus obtained consists of 39 articles from 16 periodicals. Research trends are revealed in order to give evidence of ethics and the education of information professionals approach, as well as related matters and main questions introduced by the authors. Describers’ frequency, periodic of origin and year of publication are also analyzed. It reports the low occurrence of discussions about ethics and its importance for the education of professionals. It still shows the variety of points of view on this question, and emphasizes ethics relevance for education and citizen’s formation for labor world.
