Abstract Chagas disease is a neglected parasitic disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, whose treatment has remained unsatisfactory for over 50 years, given that it is limited to two drugs. Benznidazole (BZN) is an efficient antichagasic drug used as the first choice, although its poor water-solubility, irregular oral absorption, low efficacy in the chronic phase, and various associated adverse effects are limiting factors for treatment. Incorporating drugs with such characteristics into nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) is a promising alternative to overcome these limiting obstacles, enhancing drug efficacy and bioavailability while reducing toxicity. Therefore, this study proposed NLC-BZN formulations in different compositions prepared by hot-melt homogenization followed by ultrasound, and the optimized formulation was characterized by FTIR, DRX, DSC, and thermogravimetry. Biological activities included in vitro membrane toxicity (red blood cells), fibroblast cell cytotoxicity, and trypanocidal activity against epimastigotes of the Colombian strain of T. cruzi. The optimized NLC-BZN had a small size (110 nm), negative zeta potential (-18.0 mV), and high encapsulation (1.64% of drug loading), as shown by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis. The NLC-BZN also promoted lower in vitro membrane toxicity (<3% hemolysis), and 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) for NLC-BZN in L929 fibroblast cells (110.7 µg/mL) was twice the value as the free BZN (51.3 µg/mL). Our findings showed that the NLC-BZN had higher trypanocidal activity than free BZN against the epimastigotes of the resistant Colombian strain, and this novel NLC-BZN formulation proved to be a promising tool in treating Chagas disease and considered suitable for oral and parenteral administration.

RESUMO A utilização da torta de girassol (TG) na alimentação animal vem sendo estudada principalmente devido às características que lhes são conferidas, pois esse subproduto quando incorporado na ração pode aumentar a viabilidade econômica e o valor nutricional da dieta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a inclusão da torta de girassol (TG) em dietas para frangas leves sobre a digestibilidade dos nutrientes e energia metabolizável das dietas, desempenho, composição corporal, retenção de nutrientes, metabolismo energético na fase de crescimento e desempenho na produção de ovos, maturidade sexual e qualidade dos ovos no início da fase de postura. Um total de 648 frangas foram distribuídas em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 6 tratamentos e 6 repetições de 18 frangas cada. Os tratamentos consistiram em dietas contendo níveis de inclusão de 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 e 25% TG. Os autores concluíram que as frangas alimentadas com dietas contendo TG apresentaram redução (P<0,01) na digestibilidade dos nutrientes e da energia metabolizável em comparação com aquelas alimentadas com a dieta controle. As frangas alimentadas com 25% TG apresentaram aumento (P<0,01) no consumo de ração e na conversão alimentar. A inclusão de TG nas dietas não influenciou (P>0,05) a composição corporal, a retenção de nutrientes e o metabolismo energético, bem como a maturidade sexual, desempenho produtivo e qualidade dos ovos das poedeiras de 18 a 35 semanas de idade. A TG pode ser incluída até 25% na dieta de frangas leves na fase de crescimento, sem efeito residual no desempenho produtivo no início da fase de postura.

ABSTRACT The use of sunflower cake (SC) in animal feed has been studied mainly due to the characteristics that are given to them, since this by-product when incorporated in the feed can increase the economic viability and the nutritional value of the diet. The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of sunflower cake in lightweight pullet diets and check their nutrient digestibility and metabolizable energy for several parameters, including diet, performance, body composition, nutrient retention, energy metabolism at the growth phase, performance of egg production, sexual maturity, and egg quality at the beginning of the laying phase. We distributed a total of 648 pullets in our study, which was a completely randomized design including six treatments with six replicates of 18 pullets each. The treatments included diets with 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25% SC. Our study results concluded that pullets fed with diets containing SC showed a reduction (P<0.01) in nutrient digestibility and metabolizable energy compared to those fed with the control diet. Pullets fed with 25% SC showed an increase (P<0.01) in feed intake and feed conversion ratio. However, dietary inclusion of SC in pullet diets did not influence (P>0.05) their body composition, nutrient retention, energy metabolism, sexual maturity, egg-laying performance, and egg quality of laying hens between 18 and 35 weeks of their age. Therefore, up to 25% of SC could be included in the diet of lightweight laying pullets in the growth phase since it exhibited no residual effect on their productive performance at the beginning of the laying phase.

Objective: To analyze the visibility of Nursing workers through images, which circulated in the media during the Covid-19.Methods: Cultural analysis that aims to articulate the image and its effects with theories from authors in the field of Cultural Studies.Results: Six figures were selected in which nurses are portrayed as heroines to fight Covid-19 and are promoted as an adjunct to the main character, combining the care strategy with the scientific discourse of the social isolation. The images portray them as women who face labor suffering from strenuous work and prolonged use of personal protective equipment.Final considerations: The pandemic, has highlighted speeches relates to health work, where we see images of nurses as heroines who organize chaos and bring order to the “front line”, making the idealization of Nursing visible.

Abstract This study tested the null hypothesis that antihistamine-containing syrup does not change salivary metabolites in vitro and in vivo. For the in vitro experiments, saliva from 10 volunteers was mixed with a syrup or pill suspension of loratadine (1 mg/ml Claritin®, Schering-Plough, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). For the in vivo experiment, 10 volunteers performed a mouth rinse with 10 mL of antihistamine syrup (Claritin®; Schering-Plough, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) for 20 seconds and then discarded the rinse water. After 20 seconds, 5 mL of unstimulated whole saliva was spit into a plastic tube kept on ice. The protein profile of in vitro and in vivo experiments was analyzed using 12% sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The samples were also analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, followed by Principal Component Analysis and Wilcoxon test (p < 0.05). There were differences in salivary metabolites after syrup interaction. The salivary concentrations of acetate, n-caproate, arginine, glutamate, and lysine among other metabolites were reduced with the syrup in both in vivo and in vitro experiments (p < 0.05), but no differences were observed when the pill suspension was used (p > 0.05). Similar changes in metabolite profiles were observed in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. Electrophoresis revealed no difference in the salivary protein pattern. The null hypothesis was rejected because the intake of syrup medicine changes the salivary composition and influences oral homeostasis and susceptibility to oral diseases.

Hospital infections (HI) are a serious public health problem in many countries. Several studies have identified strains correlating to surgical site infections, many with multi-resistance. The goals of this study was to quantify, to identify and to verify the resistance profile of microorganisms collected at two hospitals settings, and to alert health professionals how environmental contamination can influence hospital infection rates. For air sampling in operating rooms, intensive care unit and materials sterilization center, the impaction method (Spin Air, IUL®) and passive sedimentation were used. For the isolation of bacteria on surfaces and uniforms contact plates (RODAC®) were used. Identification of the microorganisms was performed using Vitek® 2 Systems. The antibiograms were conducted according to the disk diffusion method recommended by CLSI. The surgical center of hospital B presented more than 500 CFU/m3 in aerial microbial load. In the aerial microbiota of the sampled areas of both hospitals, M. luteus, S. haemolyticus and S. hominis spp hominis were the prevalent microorganisms, with a percentage greater than 30%. On the surfaces and uniforms there was a prevalence of M. luteus (40%) and S. hominis spp hominis (20%) among others, and some of the resistant strains were isolated from environments with microbial load within the recommended limits.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze and compare the reactions at the interface between the composite, composed of fragmented heterologous mineralized bone matrix (MOMHF) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and the rabbit’s tibias, through macroscopic evaluation and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in different periods. Methods In this study, 12 New Zealand adult rabbits were used (E1: n = 3, E2: n = 3, E3: n = 3 and E4: n = 3). They had the right tibial defects filled with composite and were evaluated immediately after surgery and at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days. Results The composites were incorporated and integrated into the recipient beds in 100% of the cases, defined by the MOMHF osseointegration and the PMMA fibrointegration, with no sign of infection, migration, or rejection. Conclusions The behavior of the composites in the recipient beds demonstrates that these biomaterials have the potential to be used in bone defect repairs, offering, thus, better quality of life to the orthopedic patient.

Resumo O estado nutricional da planta-matriz é imprescindível para a manutenção do seu vigor vegetativo, fundamental para a produção de miniestacas. Portanto, o fornecimento de nutrientes em quantidades ideais durante o manejo das minicepas influencia o sucesso da propagação. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar e comparar a produtividade do minijardim, os nutrientes exportados pelas brotações de três clones de Toona ciliata var. australis e o consumo total destes nutrientes durante o período de produção. Em cada coleta de brotação foi quantificada a sobrevivência, o número de brotações e de miniestacas produzidas por minicepa e, realizado o monitoramento nutricional em 18 coletas. Ao final, as minicepas foram extraídas dos canaletões para realizar a análise nutricional completa. São apresentadas as curvas de consumo durante 432 dias e os valores totais utilizados no processo. Ao final de 18 coletas de brotações, o clone TC3 foi mais produtivo. Os clones TC3 e TC15 são mais eficientes na conversão dos nutrientes absorvidos para produção de brotações e de miniestacas. A partir da 10ª coleta de miniestacas é indicada a reposição nutricional visando manter a produtividade do minijardim sempre constante. O potássio, o nitrogênio e o cálcio são os nutrientes mais exportados pelas coletas das brotações dos três clones de cedro-australiano.

Abstract The nutritional status of the mother plant is essential for the maintenance of vegetative vigor, vital for the production of cuttings. Therefore, the supply of nutrients in optimal amounts during handling of ministumps influences the success of propagation. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the productivity of minigarden, nutrients exported by the shoots of three clones of Toona ciliata var. australis and the total consumption of these nutrients during the production period. In each budding collection, the survival was measured, the number of shoots and cuttings produced by the ministump and, the nutritional monitoring was carried out in 18 collections. In the end, the mini-stumps were drawn from gutters to perform a complete nutritional analysis. the consumption curves for 432 days and the total amounts used in the process are presented. The TC3 clone was more productive in the 18 collections of shoots. The TC3 and TC15 clone were more efficient at converting nutrients absorbed to produce sprouts and cuttings. From the 10th collection of cuttings is shown nutritional supplementation to maintain the productivity of the always constant mini-garden. The potassium, nitrogen and calcium are the most exported nutrients by the shoots of the Australian cedar clones.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the different positions of the subject attributed to the family in the substitution gestation process. Method: documentary-type qualitative research, based on Cultural Studies, in the post-structuralism field, based on Michel Foucault's discourse and statement tools. For such, there were analyzed discourses published in the Brazilian written media, between September and December in the year 2016, on subjects who experienced the substitution gestation. Results: The speeches point out that the biological parents should monitor and control gestation. They emphasize that the cares with the baby, especially maternal breastfeeding, must be accompanied by the father and realized by the biological mother. Another point is that such technology makes it possible to experience the position of culturally constituted father and mother for the subjects who wish to have children. The discourses reinforce distinct roles for biological father and mother and surrogate mothers, presented as happy with this family formation. The statements divide, distribute and order the roles of motherhood between the two mothers in order in order to naturalize the substitution gestation. To this end, they reinforce the discourses on maternal breastfeeding and emphasize the medicalization of the female body in the substitution gestation. Conclusion: the substitution gestation was recognized as a distinct conception form, but reinforce that it does not entail another maternity form. The media are concerned with demonstrating the rituals that assist in the constitution of maternal and paternal subjects, in order to teach ways of living this gestation. Therefore, experiencing the substitution gestation is one of the possibilities for constituting a family.

Método: estudio cualitativo, tipo documental, con base en los Estudios Culturales, en la vertiente posestructuralista, fundamentada en las herramientas de discurso y anunciado por Michel Foucault. Para ello, se analizaron discursos publicados en los medios de comunicación escritos de Brasil, entre septiembre y diciembre de 2016, respecto a sujetos que vivenciaron la gestación por sustitución. Resultados: los discursos señalan que los padres biológicos deben acompañar y controlar la gestación. Además, se resalta que los cuidados con el bebé, en especial la lactancia materna, deben ser asistidos por el padre y realizados por la madre biológica. Otra cuestión es que tal tecnología permite vivenciar la posición del padre y de la madre, constituidos culturalmente a los sujetos que desean tener hijos. Los discursos refuerzan diferentes roles para el padre y la madre biológicos y las madres por sustitución, presentados como felices con esta formación familiar. Los enunciados dividen, distribuyen y orden los roles de la maternidad entre ambas madres, con el objetivo de naturalizar la gestación por sustitución. Por lo tanto, se refuerzan los discursos sobre la lactancia materna y se enfatiza la medicalización del cuerpo femenino en la gestación por sustitución. Conclusión: la gestación por sustitución fue reconocida como una forma distinta de concebir, pero hacen hincapié en que no conduce a otra forma distinta de la maternidad. Los medios de comunicación se ocupan en demonstrar los rituales que auxilian en la constitución de sujetos maternos y paternos, para enseñar los modos de vivir de esta gestación. ABSTRACT Khaya ivorensis stands out because of the quality of the wood and high economic value. Its propagation has been carried out by seeds, an obstacle in the production in large scale seedlings, since the seeds present high value and they result in heterogenous stands. The vegetative propagation is an alternative to overcome these problems. The aim of this work was to verify the feasibility of mini-cutting for african mahogany, evaluating the pro- ductivity of the mini-stumps, the rooting of mini-cuttings using different concentrations of IBA and the clonal seedlings quality. The mini-stumps were produced from seeds in tubes, pruned at 8 cm, at 60 days. At 100 days after apical pruning, the fi rst sprouts col- lection was performed, and the mini-cuttings were submitted to concentrations of IBA (0; 2,000; 4,000 and 6,000 mg.L-1) for rooting evaluation. The seedlings were transplanted to clonal mini-garden, in which four collections of mini-cuttings were performed. Clonal seedlings quality was evaluated at 120 days after staking. The species showed tolerance to apical pruning and successive collections of mini-cuttings, with 96.4% survival and more than 92% of the mini-stumps producing mini-cuttings. It was observed 100% survival and rooting of mini-cuttings. There was no effect of the IBA on the rooting percent- age of the mini-cuttings, however, the higher concentration of IBA increase the thinner root production. The fi nal clonal seedling quality has similar growth for all treatments.

Abstract OBJECTIVE To reflect on the research possibilities in nursing, especially in the field of cultural studies. METHODS Theoretical-reflexive study based on research from the perspective of cultural studies and some aspects of the thoughts of Michel Foucault. RESULTS The results expose research conducted by the Group of Cultural Studies in Health and Nursing Education of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. FINAL WORDS Cultural Studies, as a trans-disciplinary field, allow reflection on the constitution of subjects and their relationship with the cultural demands of an era. As a theoretical framework, it can be used for the study of healthcare, especially nursing.

Resumen OBJETIVO Reflexionar sobre las posibilidades de investigación en la enfermería, sobre todo en el campo de los estudios culturales. Resumo Introdução: A sensibilização está associada a piores desfechos clínicos após o transplante renal (TxR), incluindo maior incidência de função tardia, rejeição aguda e perda do enxerto. Objetivos: Avaliar os desfechos de eficácia e segurança de 1 ano de receptores de TxR com doador falecido sensibilizados induzidos com globulina antitimócito (ATG) e compará-las aos de pacientes não sensibilizados. Métodos: Receptores de TxR com doador falecido entre janeiro de 1998 e dezembro de 2009 foram divididos em 5 grupos: grupo controle 1 - n = 89, PRA negativo, sem indução; grupo controle 2 - n = 94, PRA negativo, indução com basiliximabe; grupo controle 3 - n = 81, PRA negativo, indução com ATG; grupo teste 4 - n = 64, PRA 1-49%, indução com ATG; grupo teste 5 - n = 118, PRA ≥ 50%, indução com ATG. Resultados: Não houve diferença na incidência de rejeição entre pacientes sensibilizados e não sensibilizados, exceto pelo grupo 1, que apresentou a maior incidência de rejeição aguda comprovada por biópsia (20,2%, p = 0,006 vs. grupo 4 e p = 0,001 vs. grupo 5). Os pacientes sensibilizados induzidos com ATG apresentaram maior incidência de infecção por citomegalovírus quando comparados aos pacientes do grupo 2 (26,6% e 14,4% vs. 2,1%). Não houve diferença nas sobrevidas do enxerto e do paciente. Na análise multivariada, PRA > 50% e uso de ATG não foram associados à perda, perda com óbito censorado ou óbito. Conclusão: Os pacientes sensibilizados induzidos com ATG apresentaram incidência de rejeição semelhante ou inferior à de pacientes não sensibilizados não induzidos. Estes pacientes apresentaram sobrevidas do enxerto e do paciente semelhantes em 1 ano e comparável perfil de segurança.

Abstract Introduction: Sensitization is associated with worse clinical outcomes after kidney transplantation (KT), including increased incidence of delayed graft function, acute rejection (AR) and graft loss. Objectives: To evaluate 1-year efficacy and safety outcomes in sensitized KT recipients receiving antithymocyte globulin (ATG) induction and compare them to non-sensitized patients. Methods: Deceased donors KT recipients transplanted between January 1998 and December 2009 were divided into 5 groups: control group 1 -n = 89, PRA negative, without induction therapy; control group 2 - n = 94, PRA negative, basiliximab induction; control group 3 - n = 81, PRA negative, ATG induction; test group 4 - n = 64, PRA 1-49%, ATG induction; test group 5 -n = 118, PRA ≥ 50%, ATG induction. Results: There was no difference in the incidence of AR among patients sensitized and non-sensitized, except for group 1, with highest incidence of AR (20.2%, p = 0.006 vs. Group 4 and p = 0.001 vs. group 5). Sensitized patients induced with ATG had higher incidence of citomegalovirus infection when compared with group 2 (26.6% and 14.4% vs. 2.1%). There were no differences in graft and patient survivals. In multivariable analysis, PRA > 50% and ATG induction were not associated with graft loss, death or death-censored graft loss. Conclusion: Sensitized patients induced with ATG presented similar or lower incidence of AR when compared with non-sensitized patients not induced. Besides, these patients had similar safety profile and graft and patient survivals at 1 year.
