ABSTRACT Streptococcosis is one of the main diseases in freshwater fish that causes high mortality rates. The objective of this study was to evaluate the survival response to Streptococcus agalactiae infection in three families of tilapia. The experiment was carried out at the Laboratory of Fish Diseases of the Federal University of Lavras. Fish weighing 93.7 ± 5.4 g from three different families (FA, FB, and FC) were used. 36 fish were used in each experimental unit, intraperitoneally inoculated with 107 CFU/mL of Streptococcus agalactiae per fish and a control group per family with 9 fish with 1 mL of BHI broth (Brain Heart Infusion) evaluated for 15 days. There was no mortality in the control group. The three evaluated families exposed to the pathogen observed the presence of exophthalmia, dark coloration throughout the body, lethargy, and abdominal dilation before death. The Kaplan-Meier nonparametric estimator was used to observe the survival curves. During the 15 days of the challenge, the average survival time of an individual in the FA, FB, and FC families was 9.4, 6.90, and 8.14 days, respectively. Log-rank and Peto & Peto test to evaluate the difference between the survival curves showed no significant differences between the assessed families (P=0.08 and P= 0.09), respectively.

RESUMEN La estreptococosis es una de las principales enfermedades en los peces de agua dulce que causa altas tasas de mortalidad. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la respuesta en la supervivencia a la infección por Streptococcus agalactiae en tres familias de tilapia. El experimento se llevó a cabo en el Laboratorio de Enfermedades de los Peces de la Universidad Federal de Lavras. Se utilizaron peces con un peso de 93,7 ± 5,4 g de tres familias diferentes (FA, FB y FC). Se utilizaron 36 peces en cada unidad experimental, inoculados intraperitonealmente con 107 UFC/mL de Streptococcus agalactiae por peces y un grupo control por familia con 9 peces con 1 mL de caldo BHI (Infusión Cerebro Corazón) evaluados durante 15 días. No hubo mortalidad del grupo control. Se observó la presencia de exoftalmia, coloración oscura en todo el cuerpo, letargo y dilatación abdominal antes de la muerte en las tres familias evaluadas expuestas al patógeno. El estimador no paramétrico de Kaplan-Meier se utilizó para observar las curvas de supervivencia. Durante los 15 días del desafío, el tiempo promedio de supervivencia de un individuo en las familias FA, FB y FC fue de 9,4; 6,90 y 8,14 días, respectivamente. Pruebas de Log-rank y Peto & Peto para evaluar la diferencia entre las curvas de supervivencia arrojaron que no hubo diferencias significativas entre las familias evaluadas (P=0,08 y P= 0,09), respectivamente.

Forming semiconductor heterojunction is promising for improved photocatalytic performance due to synergistic combination of the best properties of each material. The present study reports a simple hydrothermal strategy to form n-n heterojunction of Ta2O5 nanotubes and BiVO4 microstructures. The Ta2O5/BiVO4 heterojunctions were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, UV Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and their photocatalytic activity was evaluated by hydrogen production and photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) dye in aqueous medium under AM 1.5 G (100 mW cm2) condition. The heterojunctions have optical absorption in the visible region (200 500 nm) with crystal structures defined as monoclinic for BiVO4 and orthogonal for Ta2O5. For MB photodegradation, the Ta2O5/BiVO4 obtained via hydrothermal route showed a photodegradation of 72.3%, compared to 28.3% presented by the sample produced through the mechanical mixture, with the maintenance of 86.4% of its photocatalytic performance after 3 cycles of photodegradation. For H2 production, hydrothermally prepared Ta2O5/BiVO4 generated 10.2 μmol g-1 of H2 in 3 h; while Ta2O5 nanotubes and mechanical Ta2O5/BiVO4 mixture shows 6.82 and 2.80 μmol g-1, respectively. The results suggest that Ta2O5/BiVO4 is a promising material for applications in photocatalysis, promoting sustainable energy production through hydrogen and for the treatment of effluents containing cationic dyes.

Expensive and complex methodologies are available to determine the ethanol concentration in alcohol gel samples. The aim of this article was to demonstrate that alcoholmeter could be used as an alternative method to determine ethanol in gel formulations. Alcohol gel samples were produced using: hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) and Carbopol 940© (CBP). A factorial design was performed to evaluate the interaction between the ethanol concentration, glycerin and polymer contents in the samples in the recovery data of the ethanol content. Rheological analyses were also performed to identify the limiting factors to ethanol quantification. All the results were compared to high resolution magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (HR-MAS NMR) as a reference methodology. The results demonstrated that the alcoholmeter could be used to determine alcohol concentration, moreover the level of polymer HEC or HPMC, glycerin and ethanol has no effect in the determination. Yield stress, and not viscosity or flow index, appeared as the limiting factor to the use of alcoholmeter in non-acidified CBP samples. Acidification appears to be mandatory to determination of ethanol concentration in CBP samples. It was possible to achieve an inexpensive, handy and fast methodology to quantify alcohol in gelled samples, in the range of concentrations used in this article.

The brewing waste, also known as trub, is an abundant by-product of the brewing industry. Such material presents high levels of phenolic compounds, which promote antioxidant, antimicrobial and antifungal effects, turning the trub economically attractive. In this study, the trub’s phenolic compounds were extracted by ultrasound-assisted extraction technology. Such experiments were conducted according to a central composite rotatable design (CCRD), with the evaluated parameters being ethanol concentration, solid-liquid ratio and extraction temperature. Response surface methodology (RSM) described the effect of process’ variables through second order polynomial models, adjusted appropriately for such analysis, and optimized the operating conditions, aiming to obtain the maximum extraction of phenolic compounds through the proposed technique. The extraction’s optimal conditions for the evaluated variables were ethanol concentration of 58%, solid-liquid ratio of 1 g per 32 mL, and extraction temperature of 36 ºC, during a 30 minute process. Considering such experimental conditions, the total amount of phenolic compounds was equal to 7.23 mg of gallic acid g-1 trub, indicating that a great concentration of phenolic compounds can be extracted from this material through the proposed technique. Thus, this indicates that trub might be a promising by-product that can be used in different industrial fields.

Resumo Objetivo: Verificar a prevalência, mortalidade e fatores de risco associados aos nascimentos de prematuros de muito baixo peso ao nascer (MBPN) ao longo de 33 anos. Métodos: Série de quatro estudos transversais com o uso de dados das entrevistas perinatais das coortes de nascimento da cidade de Pelotas coletados em 1982, 1993, 2004 e 2015. A partir de questionários perinatais, medidas antropométricas dos recém-nascidos e certidões de óbito, foram analisadas a prevalência, a mortalidade neonatal e os fatores de risco (idade materna, renda e tipo de parto) para prematuros de muito baixo peso ao nascer. Resultados: Foram incluídos no estudo 19.625 recém-nascidos. Em 1982, 1993, 2004 e 2015 ocorreram, respectivamente, 5.909, 5.232, 4.226 e 4.258 nascimentos. A prevalência de prematuros de muito baixo peso ao nascer naqueles anos foi, respectivamente, de 1,1% (n = 64), 0,9% (n = 46), 1,4% (n = 61) e 1,3% (n = 54). A tendência de aumento durante o período não alcançou significância estatística (p = 0,11). Entre os fatores de risco, a renda familiar nos três quintis mais pobres esteve associada a prevalências cerca de duas vezes mais altas do que no quintil mais rico (p = 0,003). A mortalidade por 1.000 nascidos vivos para os neonatos com peso < 1500 g caiu de 688 para 259 por mil ao longo dos anos (p < 0,001), mas ainda representa 61% dos óbitos neonatais em 2015. Conclusão: Embora a mortalidade nos prematuros de muito baixo peso ao nascer tenha diminuído em mais de 60% nos últimos anos, esse grupo ainda contribui com mais da metade dos óbitos neonatais. A baixa renda familiar continua a ser fator de risco importante nesse cenário.

Abstract Objective: To assess the prevalence, mortality and risk factors associated with the birth of very low birth weight preterm infants over a period of 33 years. Methods: Four cross-sectional studies were analyzed, using data from perinatal interviews of birth cohorts in the city of Pelotas collected in 1982, 1993, 2004, and 2015. Based on perinatal questionnaires, anthropometric measurements of newborns and death certificates were analyzed to obtain the prevalence rate, neonatal mortality, and risk factors (maternal age, income and type of delivery) for very low birth weight. Results: A total of 19,625 newborns were included in the study. In the years 1982, 1993, 2004, and 2015, there were, respectively, 5909, 5232, 4226, and 4258 births. The prevalence of very low birth weight was, respectively, 1.1% (n = 64), 0.9% (n = 46), 1.4% (n = 61), and 1.3% (n = 54). There was no statistical evidence of an increasing trend over time (p = 0.11). Among the risk factors, family income in the three poorest quintiles was associated with prevalence rates that were approximately twice as high as in the richest quintile (p = 0.003). Mortality per 1000 live births for neonates weighing <1500 g decreased from 688 to 259 per thousand from 1982 to 2015 (p < 0.001), but still represented 61% of neonatal deaths in the latter year. Conclusion: Although mortality in very low birth weight decreased by more than 60% in recent years, this group still contributes with more than half of neonatal deaths. Low family income remains an important risk factor in this scenario.

RESUMO: A deriva de herbicida, por falhas de aplicação, pode causar intoxicação em plantas de eucalipto, comprometendo o crescimento destas. Entretanto, a adição de produtos protetores como Fertiactyl Pós® à calda tem se mostrado eficiente na redução da intoxicação de plantas de eucalipto expostas à deriva de herbicidas. Em face do exposto, objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar o efeito protetor do Fertiactyl Pós® sobre a redução de danos causados pela deriva dos herbicidas glyphosate, 2,4-D e a mistura glyphosate + 2,4-D em plantas de eucalipto. O experimento foi conduzido em esquema fatorial 3 x 2 + 1, correspondendo a três herbicidas: glyphosate (1.440 g ha-1), 2,4-D (680 g ha-1) e mistura em tanque de glyphosate + 2,4-D (1.440 g ha-1 + 680 g ha-1); duas doses de Fertiactyl Pós® (0 e 3,0 L ha-1); e uma testemunha sem aplicação. Antes da aplicação, a parte superior da copa do eucalipto foi protegida com sacos de polietileno, de modo a permitir que a calda atingisse apenas o terço inferior do dossel. A adição do Fertiactyl Pós® à calda com os herbicidas glyphosate e 2,4-D reduziu a intoxicação das plantas de eucalipto em 21,9% e 15,2%, respectivamente, aos 40 dias após a aplicação (DAA), em relação à aplicação dos respectivos herbicidas sem adição de Fertiactyl Pós®. A deriva da mistura glyphosate + 2,4-D potencializou a intoxicação das plantas do eucalipto em relação à aplicação isolada dos respectivos herbicidas e não houve resposta da adição do Fertiactyl Pós® na redução da intoxicação das plantas quando se aplicaram os herbicidas em mistura.

ABSTRACT: Herbicide drift, due to application failures, can cause intoxication in eucalyptus plants, compromising their growth. However, the addition of protective products such as Fertiactyl Pós® to the syrup has been shown to be efficient in reducing intoxication of eucalyptus plants exposed to herbicide drift. Given this, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the protective effect of Fertiactyl Pós® on the reduction of damage caused by the herbicides glyphosate, 2,4-D and the glyphosate + 2.4-D mixture in eucalyptus plants. The experiment was conducted in a 3 x 2 + 1 factorial scheme, corresponding to three herbicides: glyphosate (1,440 g ha-1), 2,4-D (680 g ha-1), glyphosate + 2.4- D (1,440 g ha-1 + 680 g ha-1); two doses of Fertiactyl Pós® (0 and 3.0 L ha-1) and one control without application. Prior to application, the top of the eucalyptus was covered with polyethylene bags to ensure the syrup only reached the lower third of the canopy. The addition of Fertiactyl Pós® to the syrup with glyphosate and 2.4 D herbicides reduced the intoxication of eucalyptus plants by 21.9 and 15.2%, respectively, at 40 days after application (DAA) when compared with the application of the respective herbicides without the addition of Fertiactyl Pós®. The glyphosate + 2.4-D mixture drift intensified the intoxication of the eucalyptus plants in comparison with the application of the respective herbicides in isolation. Besides, the addition of Fertiactyl Pós® to the glyphosate + 2,4-D mixture did not prevent plant intoxication.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi conhecer as características físicas, químicas e nutricionais de frutos de Rubus sellowii (Rosáceas), conhecida como amora-preta, planta nativa principalmente do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brasil. Para isso, foram selecionadas três populações diferentes desta planta e frutas foram analisadas por meio de umidade, cinza, acidez titulável, pH, lipídios, fibras, carboidratos, proteínas, carotenóides, licopeno, ácido ascórbico, aminograma e digestibilidade in vitro. As frutas apresentaram alta acidez (3,28 g por cento), cinzas e proteínas (1,02 e 0,93 g por cento) e maior ácido ascórbico (38,43 mg por 100 g) em comparação com as cultivares Rubus. Devido às propriedades nutricionais de Rubus sellowii , elas proporcionam benefícios para a saúde humana.

Abstract The aim of this study was to know the physical, chemical and nutritional characteristics of Rubus sellowii (Rosaceae) fruits, known as blackberry, native plant mainly to Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Brazil. For this, three different populations of this plant were selected and the fruits were analyzed through moisture, ash, titratable acidity, pH, lipids, fibers, carbohydrates, proteins, carotenoids, lycopene, ascorbic acid, aminogram and in vitro digestibility. Fruits showed high acidity (3.28 percent), ash and protein (1.02 and 0.93 percent) and higher ascorbic acid (38.43 mg per 100 g) if compared to Rubus cultivars. Due to Rubus sellowii nutritional properties, they provide benefits to human health.

ABSTRACT Little is known about milk fatty acid (FA) profile of cows fed diets based on sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) bagasse. This study aimed to evaluate FA profile and nutritional quality indexes of milk fat of cows fed sugarcane bagasse and concentrate in the Brazilian northeast semiarid region. Multiparous Girolando cows were allocated in four diets based on different levels of sugarcane bagasse (30%, 38%, 46%, and 54% total DM) added to concentrate. Fatty acids C18:1 trans-11 (lowest value for 46% inclusion) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) cis-9, trans-11 (lowest value for 46% inclusion) in milk fat presented a quadratic pattern (P < 0.05). This trend was also observed for C18:1 cis-9 (P < 0.05), but at a lower magnitude. There was a reduction in concentration of C18:1 trans-10 (0.320 to 0.148 g 100 g-1 total FA) and CLA trans-10, cis-12 (0.008 to 0.004 g 100 g-1 total FA) according to the levels of sugarcane bagasse increase. The greater inclusion of bagasse and consequent reduction in the proportion of concentrate, notably corn, cause an increase in concentration of medium-chain saturated FA and a linear reduction of C18:3 n-3 and C18:2 n-6, with a consequent increase in the indexes of atherogenicity (2.82 to 3.2) and thrombogenicity (3.39 to 3.84) and a decrease in ratio of hypo/ hyper-cholesterolemic (0.44 to 0.37) and ω-6:ω-3 (12.44 to 8.80) in milk fat. Results indicate that different levels of sugarcane bagasse change the FA content in cows’ milk when bagasse is an exclusive roughage source in the diet. The greater inclusion of sugarcane bagasse reduces the quality of milk fat of dairy cows. The lowest level of sugarcane bagasse inclusion tested (30%) promotes greater milk yield and healthier milk fat

Nós estudamos a ecologia populacional do roedor subterrâneo sul-americano Ctenomys flamarioni na Estação Ecológica do Taim, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Um programa de captura‑marcação-recaptura foi realizado em dois períodos diferentes: (A) de fevereiro de 2004 a novembro de 2005 e (B) de dezembro de 2011 a março de 2013. Como resultado, um total de 131 indivíduos foram marcados. Alguns parâmetros populacionais permaneceram constantes (densidade populacional média, taxa de sobrevivência), enquanto outros flutuaram (razão sexual, tamanho estimado da população, recrutamento e mortalidade). O segundo período de amostragem apresentou maior tamanho populacional estimado e mortalidade, por outro lado mostrou menor valor de recrutamento em relação ao primeiro período. A razão sexual não diferiu significativamente de 1:1 no período A, mas mostrou um desvio significativo de 1:1 no período B, com um maior número de fêmeas capturadas. As populações de Ctenomys flamarioni parecem ser substancialmente influenciadas por fatores ambientais locais; a densidade foi positivamente associada à temperatura e negativamente associada à precipitação. Este é o primeiro relato de variação ao longo do tempo nas taxas de reprodução e população para esta espécie, que está sob-risco crescente de extinção.

We studied the population ecology of the South American subterranean rodent Ctenomys flamarioni at the Taim Ecological Station, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A capture-mark-release program was conducted in two different time periods: (A) from February 2004 to November 2005 and (B) from December 2011 to March 2013; as a result, a total of131 individuals were marked. Some population parameters remained constant (average population density, survival rate), while others fluctuated (sex ratio, estimated population size, recruitment and mortality). The second sampling period had higher estimated population size and mortality and reduced recruitment compared to the first period. Sex ratio did not differ significantly from 1:1 in period A, but showed a significant departure from 1:1 in period B, with a greater number of females captured. Ctenomys flamarioni populations seem to be substantially influenced by local environmental factors; density was positively associated with temperature and negatively associated with precipitation. This is the first report of variation through time in reproduction and population rates for this species, which is under increasing risk of extinction.

As sementes do melão contêm alto teor de água após a extração, necessitando da secagem para manter as suas qualidades fisiológicas. O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em modelar curvas de secagem das sementes de melão em diferentes temperaturas, determinar o coeficiente de difusão efetivo e a energia de ativação. A secagem foi realizada em condições controladas, nas temperaturas de 35, 40, 45, e 50 °C, utilizando-se três repetições de 10 g de sementes, as quais foram pesadas periodicamente até atingirem massa constante. Os dados experimentais foram ajustados a diferentes modelos matemáticos frequentemente utilizados na representação da secagem de sementes. O coeficiente de difusão efetivo, calculado a partir do modelo matemático da difusão líquida para esferoide prolato, foi utilizado para obtenção da energia de ativação. Os resultados evidenciaram que o modelo de Page é o que melhor se ajusta aos dados experimentais. A elevação da temperatura de secagem reduz o tempo de secagem e promove aumento do coeficiente de difusão efetivo. A relação do coeficiente de difusão com a temperatura de secagem pode ser descrita pela equação de Arrhenius, apresentando uma energia de ativação de 55,81 kJ mol-1 no processo de secagem das sementes de melão.

The melon seeds contain high water content after extraction, requiring drying to maintain their physiological qualities. The objective of this work was to model drying curves of melon seeds at different temperatures, to determine the effective diffusion coefficient and the activation energy. Drying was carried out under controlled conditions at temperatures of 35, 40, 45, and 50 °C using three replicates of 10 g of seeds, which were weighed periodically until reaching constant mass. The experimental data were adjusted to different mathematical models frequently used in the representation of seed drying. The effective diffusion coefficient, calculated from the mathematical model of net diffusion to spheroid prolat, was used to obtain the activation energy. The results showed that the Page model is the one that best fits the experimental data. The increase of the drying temperature reduces the drying time and promotes an increase of the effective diffusion coefficient. The relation of the diffusion coefficient to the drying temperature can be described by the Arrhenius equation, presenting an activation energy of 55.81 kJ mol-1 in the drying process of the melon seeds.

The inducible inflammatory enzyme cycloxigenase-2 is up-regulated in cancer, and favors tumor progression. Cycloxigenase-2 is encoded by the prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2) gene, which presents sequence variations in the promoter region (PR) and in the 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTR). Different PR (rs689465, rs689466, rs20417) and 3′-UTR (rs5275) variants were generated by site-directed mutagenesis, and combined in haplotypes to access expression levels using a reporter system (luciferase) in human cells (MCF-7 and HEK293FT). Luciferase activity did not differ significantly among PTGS2 PR constructs, except for pAAC (containing variant allele rs20417 C), with 40% less activity than pAAG (wild-type sequence) in MCF-7 cells (P<0.01). Despite the lack of individual significant differences, PTGS2 PR constructs enclosing rs689466 G (pAGG and pAGC) showed an approximate two-fold increase in luciferase activity when compared to those containing rs689466 A (pAAG, pGAC, pAAC and pGAG) in both cell lines (P<0.001 for MCF-7 and P=0.03 for HEK293FT). The effect of PTGS2 3′-UTR sequences varied between MCF-7 and HEK293FT: MCF-7 cells showed significant reduction (40–60%) in luciferase activity (at least P<0.01), whereas HEK293FT cells showed more diverse results, with an average 2-fold increase when combined constructs (PR and 3′-UTR) were compared to respective parental PR sequences. The contribution of 3′-UTR variant (rs5275) was not consistent in either cell line. Despite the modulation of the 3′-UTR, with variable effects of rs5275, the enhancing transcriptional effect of rs689466 G was still detectable (P<0.0001 in MCF-7 or P=0.03 in HEK293FT cells).

ABSTRACT The effect of the ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) on Aeromonas hydrophila was analyzed by determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Then, the effects of crude propolis powder (CPP) on growth, hemato-immune parameters of the Nile tilapia, as well as its effects on resistance to A. hydrophila challenge were investigated. The CPP (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0%) was added to the diet of 280 Nile tilapia (50.0 ± 5.7 g fish-1). Hemato-immune parameters were analyzed before and after the bacterial challenge. Red blood cell, hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) were evaluated. The MIC of the EEP was 13% (v/v) with a bactericidal effect after 24 hours. Growth performance was significantly lower for those fish fed diets containing 2.5 and 3% of CPP compared to the control diet. Differences in CPP levels affected fish hemoglobin, neutrophils number and NO following the bacterial challenge. For others parameters no significant differences were observed. Our results show that although propolis has bactericidal properties in vitro, the addition of crude propolis powder to Nile tilapia extruded diets does not necessarily lead to an improvement of fish health.

A rizosfera contém muitos microorganismos que podem promover o crescimento vegetal e proteger o sistema radicular de infeções por agentes patogénicos. Neste grupo incluem-se fungos de Trichoderma sp. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficiência da inoculação de Trichoderma na performance agronómica de feijão-frade em condições de campo, na savana em Gurupi, Tocantins, nas campanhas de 2013/2014 a 2014/2015. Os tratamentos consistiram sementes inoculadas (ou não) com Trichoderma asperellum UFT 201 com uma concentração de conídios viáveis mínima de 2x10(9) L-1, numa dose de 20 g kg-1 de semente. Foram efetuadas avaliações de biomassa em termos de eficiência, populações iniciais e finais e sobrevivência de Trichoderma, e na manutenção e produtividade da cultura. Os resultados indicam que a capacidade de bioproteção e promoção do crescimento vegetal foram de grande importância para a produção de biomassa, a manutenção da cultura e a produtividade de feijão-frade. E mambas as campanhas a sobrevivência foi superior nas plantas tratadas comTrichoderma, 23,0 e 13,2% respetivamente, e as produtividades foram 9,5% superiores ao controlo em ambas as campanhas. Em termos globais, a inoculação com Trichoderma providenciou os melhores resultados nas diversas variáveis ilustradoras de biomasse para as duas campanhas, conduzindo a uma maior produtividade.

The rhizosphere contains many microorganisms that can promote plant growth and protect the root system against infection by pathogens. Fungi of Trichoderma sp. are included in this group. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficiency of the inoculation of Trichoderma in agronomic performance of cowpea under field conditions, in the savanna in Gurupi, Tocantins, in harvests 2013/2014 to 2014/2015. The treatments consisted in seed treatment, with and without inoculation with Trichoderma asperellum UFT 201 with minimum concentration of viable conidia of 2x10(9) L-1, at a dose of 20 g kg-1 of seed. Biomass evaluations were made on efficiency, initial and final stands and survival in the use of Trichoderma in the stand maintaining and productivity. The results indicated that the ability of bio-protection and plant growth promotion were of great importance for the biomass production, the stand maintaining and cowpea productivity. In both harvests, survival was superior in the plants treated with Trichoderma, 23.0 and 13.2%, respectively, and yields were 9.5% higher compared to control for the two harvests. In general, the inoculation of Trichoderma provided the best results in the biomass variables analyzed for the two crops with higher productivity.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o crescimento e os teores de N, P, K, Ca e Mg em mudas de cedro australiano em resposta à inoculação com fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs), em diferentes tipos de recipientes. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação e o delineamento experimental foi o de blocos inteiramente casualizados, com esquemafatorial de 4x 4 sendo: quatro tratamentos de inoculação com FMAs (Rhizophagus clarum, Gigaspora margarita, inóculo misto (R. clarum + G margarita) e o controle (sem inoculação com FMAs); quatro tipos de recipientes (sacosplásticos de 250 cm3, tubetes de 55 e 130 cm3 e bloco prensado 440 cm3. planta-1), com quatro repetições. Foram avaliadas altura, diâmetro do colo, massa seca da parte aérea (MSPA), massa seca da raiz (MSR) e massa seca total (MST), índice de qualidade de Dickson, porcentagem de colonização micorrízica e teores de N, P, K, Ca e Mg na massa seca da parte aérea. Observou-se, aos 138 dias após a semeadura, maior crescimento e/ou maiores teores de P, K e Ca na massa seca da parte aérea das mudas de cedro australiano cultivadas no recipiente bloco prensado e inoculadas com a mistura de duas espécies de FMAs (G margarita + R. clarum) ou com R. clarum. Os FMAs podem contribuir significativamente para a produção de mudas de cedro australiano.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the growth and the levels of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in Australian cedar seedlings which had been inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in different types of containers. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse and the experimental design was that of randomized complete blocks (RCB), with a 4 x 4 factorial design consisting of four inoculation treatments with AMF (Rhizophagus clarum, Gigaspora margarita, a mixed inoculation (R. clarum + G. margarita) and the control (with no AMF inoculation); four types of containers (plastic bags measuring 250 cm3, tubes of 55 and 130 cm3 and pressed blocks 440 cm3. plant-1), with four repetitions. The height, the diameter of the stem base, the aerial part dry weight (APDW), the dry weight of the root (DWR) and the total plant dry weight (DW) were measured, along with the Dickson quality index, the percentage of mycorrhizal colonization and the levels of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in the aerial part dry weight. One hundred and thirty eight days (138) days after sowing, the greatest growth and/or the highest levels of P, K and Ca could be observed in the aerial part dry weight of the Australian cedar seedlings which had been planted in the pressed block container and inoculated with a mixture of the two AMF species (G. margarita + R. clarum) or with just R. clarum. Thus it can be seen that AMF can make a significant contribution to the production of Australian cedar seedlings.

No solo, os herbicidas estão sujeitos a processos de degradação e sorção, que regulam seu destino e sua disponibilidade. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a eficiência do indaziflam no controle de cinco espécies de plantas daninhas em três solos com características físico-químicas contrastantes. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, no delineamento de blocos ao acaso, arranjado em esquema fatorial 6 x 3 x 5, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos constaram de seis doses de indaziflam (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 e 150 g i.a. ha-1), três solos (texturas areia, argila e franco-argiloarenosa) e cinco espécies daninhas (Rottboellia cochinchinensis, Panicum maximum, Digitaria horizontalis, Euphorbia heterophylla e Ipomoea grandifolia). O solo foi peneirado e colocado em bandejas perfuradas, e as espécies, semeadas a 0,015 m de profundidade. O herbicida foi aplicado sobre solo úmido, e as bandejas, colocadas sob irrigação diária de 5 mm, aproximadamente. Avaliou-se a emergência, sete dias após a emergência, e o controle das espécies, 40 dias depois da aplicação. O indaziflam foi mais eficiente no controle das espécies D. horizontalis, P. maximum e R. cochinchinensis. As duas primeiras foram muito sensíveis ao herbicida, com controle total dessas espécies em todas as doses e solos testados. No solo argiloso, R. cochincinensis só foi eficientemente controlada a partir da dose de 50 g ha-1 de indaziflam. O controle de E. heterophylla e I. grandifolia pelo indaziflam foi mais eficiente no solo franco-argiloarenoso.

Herbicides in soil are subject to degradation and sorption processes that govern their fate and availability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of three soils with contrasting physicochemical characteristics on a dose of indaziflam and the control efficiency of five weed species. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in a randomized block design with four replications and a factorial 6 x 3 x 5. The treatments consisted of six doses of indaziflam (0; 30; 60; 90; 120 and 150 g a.i. ha-1), three soils (textural classes sand, clay, and sandy clay loam), and five weed species (Rottboellia cochinchinensis, Panicum maximum, Digitaria horizontalis, Euphorbia heterophyla, and Ipomoea grandifolia). The soil was sieved and placed on perforated trays, while the species were seeded at a depth of 0.015 m. The herbicide was applied to moist soils and trays placed under daily irrigation of approx. 5 mm. The emergence of weeds was assessed seven days after the emergence, and the control of weeds, 40 days after the treatment. The indaziflam was more effective in controlling the species D. horizontalis, P. maximum, and R. cochinchinensis. The first two were very sensitive to the herbicide, with full control of these species at all doses of the tested soils. In the clay soil, R. conchincinensis was effectively controlled from a dose of just 50 g a.i. ha-1. The control of E. heterophylla and I. grandifolia by indaziflam was more efficient in sandy clay loam soil.
