Abstract Aim: To propose a dance therapy and free dance protocol for women undergoing adjuvant treatment of breast cancer and to compare its effectiveness with the control group and the healthy group. Method: Protocol for a 12-week randomized clinical trial with a frequency of 2 times at progressive intensity, in which the participants will be allocated into 4 groups: (a) dance therapy intervention; (b) free dance intervention; (c) control group and (d) healthy group. Information related to personal and clinical characteristics as well as psychological aspects will be collected. The primary outcome will be analyzed through depressive symptoms while secondary outcomes include the variables: body image, anxiety, mood, perceived stress, and optimism. Assessments will be carried out in the pre-intervention period (baseline) and after 12 weeks of intervention in all groups. Discussion: As a hypothesis, there are improvements in psychological aspects after dance therapy interventions and free dance, reaching the level of healthy women, given the benefits of that protocol.

Resumo Introdução: O câncer de mama é um problema para a saúde pública devido ao alto número de incidência. Seu tratamento muitas vezes mutilador pode trazer sérios problemas na imagem corporal e na função sexual dessas mulheres. A dança do ventre vem como uma opção passível para melhorar a feminilidade dessas mulheres. Objetivo: Analisar o efeito da prática da dança do ventre na função sexual e na imagem corporal de pacientes em tratamento adjuvante de hormonioterapia para o câncer de mama em Santa Catarina. Métodos: O ensaio clínico randomizado de dois braços foi realizado com 24 mulheres (60 ± 10,4 anos) diagnosticadas com câncer de mama, sendo 11 no grupo de intervenção (GI) e 13 no grupo controle (GC). Utilizou-se um questionário avaliando características pessoais e clínicas, imagem corporal BIBCQ e função sexual FSFI. Resultados: Na escala de imagem corporal, nos domínios estigma corporal (p = 0,002) e preocupações com o corpo (p = 0,017), foram encontradas diferenças significativas intergrupo, com melhor imagem corporal para o GI no período pós-intervenção quando comparado ao GC. Na função sexual não foram encontradas diferenças significativas. Conclusão: Percebe-se a importância do exercício físico como a dança do ventre a fim de auxiliar na melhora da imagem corporal de pacientes com câncer de mama em tratamento adjuvante com hormonioterapia.

Abstract Introduction: Breast cancer is a public health problem because of its high incidence. Its often-mutilating treatment can cause serious problems with regard to body image and sexual function in these women. Belly dancing is a possible option to improve the femininity of these women. Objective: The aim of this two-arm randomized study was to determine the effect of practicing belly dancing on sexual function and body image in breast cancer patients undergoing adjuvant hormone therapy in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Methods: The study randomized 24 women (60 ± 10.4 years old) diagnosed with breast cancer, 11 in the intervention group (IG) and 13 in the control group (CG). A questionnaire was used to evaluate personal and clinical characteristics, body image (BIBCQ), and sexual function (FSFI). Results: On the body image scale, in the domains of body stigma (p = 0.002) and body concerns (p = 0.017), significant intergroup differences were found, with better body image for the IG in the post-intervention period when compared to the CG. In sexual function, no significant differences were found. Conclusion: Belly dancing as physical exercise helps improve body image in patients with breast cancer undergoing adjuvant treatment with hormone therapy.

RESUMO O objetivo deste ensaio clínico randomizado foi analisar o efeito de 16 semanas de intervenção do método Pilates na autoestima e sintomas depressivos em mulheres com câncer de mama em terapia hormonal. Trinta e quatro mulheres foram randomizadas no grupo Pilates (PG) (n = 18) e no grupo controle (GC) (n = 16). A intervenção ocorre por 16 semanas, com 3x por semana, durante 60 minutos cada sessão (intensidade leve a intenso de acordo com a escala de BORG). O GC recebeu atividades educativas em forma de palestras e foi convidado a manter suas atividades de rotina. A coleta de dados ocorreu na linha de base e pós-intervenção. Foi aplicado um questionário incluindo a Escala de Autoestima e o Inventário de Depressão de Beck. Anova Two way, com medidas repetidas e teste de comparação de Sydak, foi utilizado para analisar os efeitos nas variáveis após as 16 semanas de intervenção. Dois tipos de análise foram realizados após a intervenção, na análise por intenção de tratar PG (n=18) a variável autoestima apresentou resultado significativo (p=0.011) e na análise por protocolo PG (n=11) (p=0.013). Os sintomas depressivos não demonstraram melhora significativas após a intervenção. O grupo controle não apresentou alterações significativas durante o período do estudo. As 16 semanas de PG foram uma intervenção eficaz para melhorar a autoestima de mulheres com câncer de mama em terapia hormonal.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to analyze the effects of 16 weeks of mat Pilates method intervention in self-esteem and depressive symptoms in women with breast cancer undergoing hormone therapy. Thirty-four women were randomized in Pilates group (PG) (n=18) and control group (CG) (n=16). The intervention occurs for 16 weeks, three times per week for 60 minutes each session (light to very hard intensity according to BORG scale). The CG received three educational sessions and was invited to maintain their routine activities. The data collection took place at the baseline and post-intervention. A questionnaire was applied including Self-Esteem Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory. Anova Two way with repeated measures and Sydak comparison test was used to analyze the effects in the variables after the 16 weeks intervention. Two types of analysis were performed after the intervention, in the analysis by intention to treat PG (n=18) the self-esteem variable showed a significant result (p=0.011) and in the analysis by PG protocol (n=11) (p=0.013). The depressive symptoms did not demonstrate significant improvements after the intervention. Control group did not present any significant changes during the time of the study. The 16 weeks of PG was an effective intervention to improve self-esteem of women with breast cancer undergoing hormone therapy.

RESUMO Introdução O câncer de mama traz inúmeras consequências para a vida das mulheres e a atividade física pode ser benéfica neste período. Objetivos Analisar a influência da dança do ventre na imagem corporal e autoestima das mulheres durante e após o tratamento do câncer de mama. Métodos Participaram do estudo 19 mulheres, divididas em grupo controle (oito mulheres) e grupo experimental (11 mulheres), diagnosticadas com câncer de mama em tratamento ou após o-tratamento no Centro de Pesquisas Oncológicas (CEPON). Para a coleta de dados, utilizou-se um questionário dividido em três blocos: a) informações gerais - caracterização sociodemográfica e clínica; b) imagem corporal - Body Image After Breast Cancer; e c) autoestima - Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg. O grupo experimental foi submetido a uma intervenção com aulas de 60 minutos de dança do ventre, duas vezes por semana, por um período total de 12 semanas. O grupo controle apenas manteve suas atividades de rotina. Resultados Houve mudanças significativas na melhora da imagem corporal no período pré- e pós-intervenção do grupo experimental, nas escalas de estigma corporal (p=0,017) e transparência (p=0,021). Não houve modificações em relação à autoestima. O grupo controle não apresentou mudanças tanto na imagem corporal quanto na autoestima. Conclusão Percebeu-se a influência da dança do ventre na melhora da imagem corporal das mulheres após 12 semanas de intervenção. Dessa maneira, entende-se que a prática de uma atividade física pode auxiliar essas mulheres após o câncer de mama e deve ser incentivada por profissionais de saúde desta área. ABSTRACT Introduction Breast cancer has innumerable consequences in women’s lives and physical activity can be beneficial during this period. Objectives To analyze the influence of belly dancing on the body image and self-esteem of women during and after breast cancer treatment. Methods Nineteen women diagnosed with breast cancer, divided into a control group (8 women) and a study group (11 women), who were under treatment or post-treatment at the Center for Oncological Research (CEPON), participated in the study. A questionnaire was used for data collection, divided into three blocks as follows: a) general information - sociodemographic and clinical characterization; b) body image - Body Image After Breast Cancer; and c) self-esteem - Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The study group underwent a belly dance intervention consisting of 60-minute classes, twice a week, for a total period of 12 weeks. Women in the control group only maintained their routine activities. Results Significant changes were observed in the improvement of body image in the belly dance group in the pre- and post-intervention periods in the body stigma (p = 0.017) and transparency (p = 0.021) scales. There were no changes in regards to self-esteem. The control group had no changes in either body image or self-esteem. Conclusion The influence of belly dancing on the improvement of women’s body image was observed after 12 weeks of intervention. Thus, it is understood that physical activity may help these women after breast cancer, and should be encouraged by health professionals in this field. RESUMEN Introducción El cáncer de mama trae innumerables consecuencias para la vida de las mujeres y la actividad física puede ser beneficiosa en este período. Objetivos Analizar la influencia de la danza del vientre en la imagen corporal y la autoestima de las mujeres durante y después del tratamiento del cáncer de mama. Métodos Participaron del estudio 19 mujeres, divididas en grupo control (ocho mujeres) y grupo experimental (11 mujeres), diagnosticadas con cáncer de mama en tratamiento o post tratamiento en el Centro de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CEPON). Para la recolección de los datos se utilizó un cuestionario dividido en tres bloques: a) informaciones generales - caracterización sociodemográfica y clínica; b) imagen corporal - Body Image After Breast Cancer; y c) autoestima - Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg. El grupo experimental fue sometido a una intervención con clases de 60 minutos de danza del vientre, dos veces por semana, por un período total de 12 semanas. El grupo control sólo mantuvo sus actividades de rutina. Resultados Hubo cambios significativos en la mejora de la imagen corporal del período pre y post intervención del grupo experimental, en las escalas de estigma corporal (p = 0,017) y transparencia (p = 0,021). En la autoestima no se encontraron modificaciones. El grupo control no presentó cambios, tanto en la imagen corporal, como en la autoestima. Conclusión Se percibió la influencia de la danza del vientre en la mejora de la imagen corporal de las mujeres después de las 12 semanas de intervención. De esta manera, se entiende que la práctica de una actividad física puede ayudar a esas mujeres después del cáncer de mama, y debe ser incentivada por profesionales de salud de esta área. RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: O câncer de mama é um problema de saúde pública devido às altas taxas de incidência e mortalidade, e a presença de dor no braço e na mama é um sintoma de maior frequência nessas mulheres. O objetivo deste estudo foi organizar as evidências científicas sobre os tratamentos de reabilitação para dor utilizados com mulheres após a cirurgia do câncer de mama. CONTEÚDO: A busca foi realizada a partir da consulta às bases de dados Pubmed, LILACS e Scielo, dos artigos publicados nos últimos 10 anos, de janeiro de 2008 a janeiro de 2018. O levantamento foi realizado com os seguintes descritores: “Breast Cancer” AND “Upper Limb” AND “Pain” AND “Rehabilitation”. Foram incluídos ensaios clínicos randomizados, estudos piloto e estudos quase-experimentais. A busca totalizou 92 artigos e destes foram selecionados apenas sete. A escala analógica visual foi utilizada na maioria dos artigos. CONCLUSÃO: A fisioterapia e o exercício físico podem beneficiar mulheres com câncer de mama, reduzindo a dor e aumentando a funcionalidade de membro superior, além de minimizar o linfedema.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is a public health problem due to its high rates of incidence and mortality, and the presence of pain in the arm and breast is a very frequent symptom in these women. The objective of this study was to organize scientific evidence on rehabilitation treatments for women after breast cancer surgery. CONTENTS: The search was performed based on the Medline, LILACS, and Scielo database on articles published in the last 10 years, from January 2008 to January 2018. The survey was carried out with the following keywords: “Breast Cancer” and “Upper Limb” and “Pain” and “Rehabilitation”. Randomized clinical trials, pilot study, and quasi-experimental study were included. The search totaled 92 articles, of which only seven articles were selected. The visual analog scale was used in most articles. CONCLUSION: Physiotherapy and physical exercise can benefit women with breast cancer, reducing pain, and increasing the upper limb’s functionality, as well as minimize the lymphedema.

The objective of the study was to compare the physical activity, fatigue and quality of life of patients during breast cancer treatment and to investigate the association between these variables. It was included 122 women in clinical treatment at the Cancer Research Center (CEPON) in Florianópolis, SC. We used a questionnaire with general information, physical activity (IPAQ - short), fatigue (Piper fatigue) and quality of life (EORTC QLQ - C30). One-way ANOVA with Scheffe's post-hoc, Chi-square, and univariate and multiple linear regression (p <0.05) were used. It was observed a greater walking time and total physical activity for the patients in the hormone therapy. In the fatigue, worse scores were presented by the patients in the chemotherapy. In the quality of life, there was a difference in the symptomatic scale, with worse scores on the subscales of nausea and vomiting, pain and loss of appetite for patients on chemotherapy and constipation for radiotherapy. It was identified an association between the increase of the physical activity with the improvement of the physical, social function and symptoms of the fatigue, regardless of the type of treatment or age. Patients in the hormone therapy practiced more physical activity, and those in chemotherapy had worse side effects. It is necessary to encourage physical activity during treatment, since benefits in quality of life and fatigue are evidenced.
