Abstract The hydrological regime leads to fluctuations in the availability of food resources for fish, which may reflect in their diet variation. Our main goal was to analyze the relationship between water-level fluctuations and the diet and the body condition of Trachelyopterus galeatus in the Upper Paraná River floodplain. The fish used in the study were sampled quarterly along nine years, at nine sampling stations. Our results showed that diet of T. galeatus varied in response to oscillations in the hydrometric level, with the consumption of terrestrial invertebrates being positively related to hydrometric level, while the consumption of aquatic invertebrates was negatively related. The trophic niche breadth and feeding activity were not affected by hydrometric level, but the fish body condition was positively affected. The high food plasticity allows T. galeatus to consume the most available resources (e.g., terrestrial invertebrates in high water levels), which probably contributed to the increase in its body condition in higher hydrometric levels. In summary, the hydrological dynamic is fundamental for the diet variation of omnivorous fish, which can take advantage of the resource availability according to the hydrometric level, increasing its body condition when allochthonous resources as terrestrial invertebrates are supposed to be more available.

Resumo O regime hidrológico leva a flutuações na disponibilidade de recursos alimentares para os peixes, o que pode refletir na variação de sua dieta. O principal objetivo foi analisar a relação entre as oscilações do nível hidrométrico e a dieta e condição corporal de Trachelyopterus galeatus na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. Os peixes foram amostrados trimestralmente durante nove anos, em nove locais. Nossos resultados mostraram que a dieta de T. galeatus variou em resposta às oscilações do nível hidrométrico, com o consumo de invertebrados terrestres sendo positivamente relacionado com o nível hidrométrico, enquanto o consumo de invertebrados aquáticos foi negativamente relacionado. O nicho trófico e a atividade alimentar não foram afetados pelo nível hidrométrico, mas a condição corporal dos peixes foi positivamente afetada. A alta plasticidade alimentar permite que T. galeatus aproveite recursos mais disponíveis (por exemplo, invertebrados terrestres em níveis elevados), o que provavelmente contribui para o aumento da condição corporal em níveis hidrométricos elevados. Em resumo, a dinâmica hidrológica é fundamental para a variação da dieta de peixes onívoros, que podem aproveitar a disponibilidade de recursos de acordo com o nível hidrométrico, aumentando sua condição corporal quando recursos alóctones, como invertebrados terrestres, são supostamente mais disponíveis.

RESUMO Brycon orbignyanus é uma espécie endêmica da bacia do rio da Prata, cujos estoques vêm apresentando redução relevante em todo o rio Paraná, e está classificada como espécie ameaçada. Este estudo avaliou aspectos da bio-ecologia da espécie, relacionados a essa ameaça, destacando sua distribuição, abundância, dieta e relação entre o recrutamento e o regime de inundação. Os dados foram obtidos em diferentes partes da bacia do alto rio Paraná (trechos regulados por barragens e trechos livres) de 1986 a 2010, com detalhes no remanescente livre desse segmento (planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná). Os resultados indicam que não existem registros da espécie em mais da metade dos pontos de amostragem localizados nos trechos da bacia do rio Paraná reguladas por barragens, enquanto a espécie foi capturada em 75% dos locais amostrados na planície (remanescente livre de barragem). Foi observado um efeito marcante do regime hidrológico sobre o recrutamento de B. orbignyanus, bem como o uso de diferentes alimentos durante seu desenvolvimento ontogenético, com adultos consumindo quase exclusivamente frutos e sementes, revelando que esses indivíduos são sustentados pela vegetação ripária. Assim, conclui-se que mudanças no regime natural de inundação, bem como a remoção da vegetação ripária, ambas decorrentes de ações antropogênicas, ameaçam B. orbignyanus na bacia do rio Paraná.

ABSTRACT Brycon orbignyanus is an endemic species from La Plata basin whose stocks have been presenting significant reductions throughout the Paraná River. Brycon orbignyanus is categorized as an endangered species. This study evaluated aspects of the bio-ecology of this species that may be related to this threat, highlighting its distribution, abundance, and diet as well as the corresponding relationships between its recruitment and flood regimes. Data were obtained from different parts of the upper Paraná River (stretches free and regulated by dams) from 1986 to 2010 with more detailed data collected from the free remnant of this basin. The results indicate that no records for species exist at more than half of the sampling points located in dam-regulated sections of the Paraná River, whereas specimens were collected from 75% sites in the free plain remnant. We observed a remarkable effect of the hydrological regime on recruitment as well as distinct food demands during ontogenetic development, with adults almost exclusively consuming fruits and seeds, revealing that these individuals are supported by riparian vegetation. Thus, it is concluded that changes in the natural flood regime as well as riparian vegetation removal threaten B. orbignyanus populations in the Paraná River basin.

Resumo Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a dieta de sete espécies de peixes que consomem predominantemente macroinvertebrados bentônicos, e a disponibilidade desses organismos no ambiente. Foi analisada a ocorrência de segregação trófica entre as espécies de peixes e a correlação entre a abundância de macroinvertebrados na dieta e no ambiente. Métodos Peixes e macroinvertebrados foram amostrados em três riachos da bacia do Rio Pirapó (alto Rio Paraná - Brasil). Diferenças na composição da dieta entre as espécies foram testadas usando uma análise de variância permutacional multivariada (PERMANOVA). Foi utilizada uma correlação de Spearman para testar a relação entre a abundância de macroinvertebrados consumidos e os disponíveis no ambiente. Resultados Todas as espécies consumiram predominantemente insetos aquáticos, mas variações interespecíficas significativas na composição da dieta foram verificadas para a maioria delas. Para cinco das sete espécies analisadas não houve correlação significativa entre a abundância de macroinvertebrados na dieta e os disponíveis no ambiente. Conclusões Os resultados mostraram que houve segregação trófica entre a maioria das espécies, e que suas dietas não foram correlacionadas positivamente com a abundância de presas no ambiente, indicando que os macroinvertebrados mais consumidos não foram os mais abundantes no ambiente. Estes resultados sugerem que as espécies selecionam os macroinvertebrados e que características morfológicas e comportamentais de ambos predadores e presas são importantes na alimentação de peixes de riachos.

Abstract Aim This study aimed to investigate the diet of seven species of fish that consume predominantly benthic macroinvertebrates, and the availability of these organisms in the environment. We analyzed the occurrence of trophic segregation between species and the correlation between the abundance of macroinvertebrates in the diet and in the environment. Methods Fish and macroinvertebrates were sampled in three streams of the Pirapó River basin (Upper Paraná River - Brazil). Differences in diet composition between species were tested using a multivariate permutation analysis of variance (PERMANOVA). A Spearman Correlation was performed to test the relation between the abundance the macroinvertebrates consumed and those available in the environment. Results All species mainly consumed aquatic insect, and significant interspecific variations in diet composition were found for most of them. For five out of the seven species of fish analyzed no significant correlation was detected between the abundance of macroinvertebrates in the environment and in the diet. Conclusions The results showed that most of the species segregate and their diets are not positively correlated with the abundance of preys in the environment, indicating that the most consumed macroinvertebrates were not the most abundant in the environment. These results suggest that the fish species select the macroinvertebrates, and that the morphological and behavioral characteristics of both predators and prey are important in feeding fish from streams.

O objetivo deste estudo foi responder a seguinte pergunta: o consumo de recursos alóctones por Astyanax aff. fasciatusé influenciado pelo gradiente longitudinal dos riachos? Para responder esta questão, foram amostrados peixes na cabeceira, no meio e na foz de quatro riachos (bacia do alto Rio Paraná). As amostragens foram realizadas entre julho/2007 e junho/2008, utilizando-se pesca elétrica. Os peixes foram identificados, medidos e seus conteúdos estomacais identificados e quantificados. Variações espaciais (entre os trechos) na dieta foram sumarizadas através da análise de ordenação de coordenadas principais (PCoA). Diferenças espaciais na dieta foram testadas através do procedimento de permutação de multiresposta (MRPP). Recursos alimentares alóctones compuseram a maior parcela da dieta deA. aff. fasciatus em todos os trechos, porém, na foz dos riachos a dieta diferiu significativamente do meio e da cabeceira, sendo esta diferença causada pelo incremento de recursos autóctones na dieta na foz. A análise de ordenação mostrou a separação da dieta dos peixes amostrados na foz da dieta da maioria dos peixes amostrados na cabeceira e no meio. Estes resultados evidenciam a importância de recursos alóctones, principalmente insetos, na dieta deA. aff. fasciatus. No entanto, a dieta foi influenciada pelo gradiente longitudinal, seguindo o padrão descrito para estes ambientes, onde na cabeceira os peixes dependem primariamente de material alóctone, e ao longo do gradiente ocorre um decréscimo na importância destes recursos.

The aim of this investigation was to respond the following question: is the consumption of allochthonous resources by Astyanax aff.fasciatus influenced by the longitudinal gradient in streams? To respond this question we sampled fish in the headwater, middle and mouth stretches of four streams (Upper Paraná River basin). Samplings were carried out from July 2007 to June 2008 using electrical fishing. Fish were identified, measured and their stomach contents identified and quantified. Spatial variations (among longitudinal stretches) in the diet were summarized using a principal coordinate analysis (PCoA). Spatial differences in the diet were tested with a multiresponse permutation procedure (MRPP). Allochthonous resources had the highest percentage of the A. aff.fasciatus diet in all stretches; however, the increased importance of autochthonous resources in the fish diet in the stream mouths made these stretches to differ significantly from the middle and headwater ones. The ordination analysis separated the fish diet sampled in the stream mouth from the diet of most fish samples in the headwater and middle stretches. The results highlight the importance of allochthonous resources, mainly insects, in the diet of A. aff. fasciatus. However, the diet was affected by longitudinal gradient and followed the pattern described for these ecosystems, where fish depend basically of allochthonous material in the headwaters and the importance of these resources decrease along the longitudinal gradient.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os fatores que favorecem a coexistência de três espécies endêmicas de Astyanax (Astyanax bifasciatus, Astyanax minor e Astyanax gymnodontus) no reservatório de Segredo (rio Iguaçu, Paraná, Brasil), e testar a hipótese de que as três espécies partilham os recursos alimentares, sendo que as variações na dieta estão relacionadas às características morfológicas das espécies. Os peixes foram coletados em três estações de amostragem no primeiro ano após o fechamento da barragem, nos anos de 1993 e 1994. A dieta foi avaliada através da análise dos conteúdos estomacais, e a ecomorfologia através dos índices ecomorfológicos. Os dados de dieta e morfologia foram ordenados por meio de técnicas multivariadas (DCA e PCA, respectivamente), com a finalidade de caracterizar as guildas tróficas e identificar os padrões ecomorfológicos. Posteriormente, foi realizada uma MRPP para verificar a existência de diferenças quanto à alimentação e os padrões morfológicos entre as espécies. Padrões tróficos e ecomorfológicos foram registrados entre as espécies de Astyanax. Diferenças significativas foram encontradas para ambos os aspectos. Dessa forma, os resultados corroboraram a hipótese inicial, sendo a segregação trófica e ecomorfológica entre as espécies deAstyanax do reservatório de Segredo um fator que pode contribuir para diminuir a competição entre elas, favorecendo a sua coexistência no ambiente.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate factors that may favor the coexistence of three endemic species of Astyanax (Astyanax bifasciatus,Astyanax minor and Astyanax gymnodontus) in Segredo Reservoir (Iguaçu River, Paraná State, Brazil), and to test the hypothesis that these species share food resources, being the dietary variations related to morphological characteristics. Fish were collected at three samplings sites in 1993 and 1994, during the first year after the filling phase of the reservoir. The diet was assessed using stomach content analysis and ecomorphology by ecomorphological indices. Diet and ecomorphology data were ordinated by multivariate techniques (DCA and PCA, respectively), aiming to characterize trophic guilds and identify ecomorphological patterns. A MRPP was performed to check differences between diet and morphology of species. Trophic and ecomorphological patterns were recorded among theAstyanax species, and significant differences were found for both aspects. In this way, our results corroborate the presupposed hypothesis. Therefore, the trophic and ecomorphological segregation between Astyanax species from Segredo Reservoir can contribute to reduce the competition, favoring thus their coexistence.

Neste estudo foram avaliados fatores que afetam o uso dos recursos alimentares por Plagioscion ternetzi, Boulenger, 1895, utilizando três abordagens: variações espacias, sazonais e ontogenéticas. Os peixes foram amostrados de fevereiro/2000 a março/2001 e de fevereiro/2003 a março/2004 nas lagoas Sinhá Mariana e Chacororé, Pantanal Matogrossense. Peixe foi o principal alimento, porém camarões e insetos também foram consumidos. A dieta de P. ternetzi foi significativamente diferente entre as lagoas, mas não diferiu entre os períodos de cheia e seca. Na lagoa Mariana, Psectrogaster curviventrisfoi a presa mais consumida em ambos os períodos. Na lagoa Chacororé, peixes dominaram a dieta (principalmente Astyanax spp., Leporinus spp. and Schizodon borellii) na cheia, e camarão e Eigenmannia spp. na seca. Uma correlação de Spearman mostrou que não existe correlação entre a abundância das espécies de peixes capturadas e suas abundâncias na dieta de P. ternetzi na lagoa Mariana, e que há uma correlação negativa na lagoa Chacororé, embora algumas presas importantes na dieta tenham sido numericamente importantes nas capturas. Embora tenha consumido camarões e insetos, P. ternetzi foi piscívora desde imatura. A correlação entre os itens alimentares e as classes de tamanho de P. ternetzi (Correlação de Pearson) evidenciou que as mudanças no uso do alimento durante a ontogenia estiveram associadas ao incremento no consumo de P. curviventris na lagoa Mariana, e de S. borellii na lagoa Chacororé, acompanhando o aumento de tamanho do predador. Assim, os resultados sugerem que vários fatores podem estar envolvidos no uso dos recursos alimentares por P. ternetzi, entre eles, a abundância, o tamanho e as características morfológicas das presas.

We evaluated the factors that affect the food resource use by Plagioscion ternetzi using three approaches: spatial, seasonal, and ontogenetic changes. Fish were sampled between March 2000 and February 2001 and March 2003 and February 2004 in the Sinhá Mariana and Chacororé lagoons, wetlands of the Pantanal Matogrossense. Fish was the predominant food in the diet, but shrimps and insects have been also consumed. The diet of P. ternetzi was significantly different between lagoons, but no difference was detected between dry and flood periods. In Sinhá Mariana lagoon, the diet mainly consisted of Psectrogaster curviventris, in both periods. In the flood period in Chacororé lagoon, fish was the dominant food (especially Astyanax spp., Leporinus spp. and Schizodon borellii), and in dry, shrimp and Eigenmannia spp. The Spearman coefficient indicated no correlation between the abundance of caught fish species and their abundances in the diet of P. ternetzi in Sinhá Mariana lagoon, and a strong negative correlation at Chacororé lagoon, although some very consumed preys were numerically abundant in the environment. Despite the intake of insect and shrimp, P. ternetzi was piscivorous since immature stages. A correlation between each item and the size classes of P. ternetziwas tested by means of Pearson correlation that showed that the changes in the use of resources over ontogenetic development have been represented by increased intake of P. curviventris in Mariana lagoon, and S. borellii at Chacororé lagoon, accompanying the increase in the size of the predator. In this way, the results suggest that several factors can be involved in the use of food resources by P. ternezi, among them the abundance, the size and morphological characteristics of the prey.

OBJETIVO: Neste estudo nós avaliamos os efeitos do regime hidrológico (seca e cheia) e do ciclo diário (horários) na atividade alimentar e na composição da dieta de Serrapinus notomelas em bancos de Eichhornia azurea em um ambiente raso da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, Brasil. MÉTODOS: Os peixes foram amostrados mensalmente, entre junho/2007 e maio/2008, com armadilhas colocadas dentro dos bancos de macrófitas. Foram examinados 1038 estômagos. A atividade alimentar foi avaliada através do grau de enchimento médio dos estômagos. Para sumarizar e interpretar os resultados da composição da dieta por período (seca e cheia) e ciclo diário (horários) foi aplicada uma NMS. RESULTADOS: A atividade alimentar de S. notomelas não diferiu significativamente entre os períodos de seca e cheia, mas foi significativamente diferente durante o ciclo diário. A atividade alimentar foi mais intensa no período diurno e ao entardecer tanto na seca quanto na cheia. Diferenças significativas na composição da dieta foram verificadas, entre os períodos de seca e cheia, e entre os horários do dia. Na seca, a dieta de S. notomelas foi composta principalmente por algas e na cheia por Cladocera. As algas foram consumidas mais intensamente no período diurno e Cladocera ao amanhecer e ao entardecer. CONCLUSÕES: Nossos resultados indicam que o regime hidrológico afeta a composição da dieta de S. notomelas, mas não afeta a atividade alimentar. As variações sazonais na composição da dieta provavelmente estão associadas às variações temporais na abundância dos recursos alimentares regidas pelo regime hidrológico. Assim, quando a densidade de Cladocera foi baixa (seca), S. notomelas consumiu predominantemente algas, mas quando Cladocera foi abundante (cheia) passou a ser um recurso alimentar importante para S. notomelas.

AIM: In this paper we assessed the effects of flooding (low and high water period) on the feeding activity and diet composition of Serrapinus notomelas in patches of the macrophyte Eichhornia azurea in a shallow floodplain lake (upper Paraná River Floodplain, Brazil). We also assessed the variations of diet composition and feeding activity along the diel cycle. METHODS: Traps were used to catch the fish inside of macrophyte patches monthly from June/2007 to May/2008. A total of 1038 stomachs were examined. We assessed the feeding activity with the mean stomach fullness degree method. To summarize and support the results of diet composition in the different periods (low and high water periods) and times (dawn, light period, and dusk), was applied a nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS). RESULTS: The feeding activity of S. notomelas did not differ between low and high water periods, but it differed along the diel cycle. The feeding activity was higher during the light period and dusk, at both the low and high water period. The diet composition differed significantly between low and high water periods, and also along the diel cycle. In the low water the diet of S. notomelas was composed mainly by algae and in the high water by Cladocera. Algae were consumed mainly during the light period while Cladocera in dawn and dusk. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that the oscillations in the water level affect the diet composition, but not the feeding activity of S. notomelas. These seasonal changes are probably related to the temporal abundance of food resources, thus, when Cladocera density was low (low water), S. notomelas consumed mainly algae but when Cladocera was more abundant (high water), it became a common food resource.

Los embalses nuevos ofrecen la oportunidad de comprobar si especies que presentan suficiente flexibilidad en la alimentación en condiciones naturales pueden aprovechar esta situación y, sin restricciones de reproducción, ocupar la mayor parte del hábitat visible en un gran embalse (espacios abiertos), además, presentar un alto éxito en la colonización del nuevo entorno. Asimismo, examinamos variaciones en la abundancia y alimentación de A. osteomystax, en dos ambientes, uno natural (Sinha Mariana floodplain lake) y otro alterado (Embalse Manso), durante dos periodos: el primer ano después de la fase de llenado y tres años más tarde. Nuestro objetivo fue evaluar la ocupación del nuevo hábitat (Embalse Manso) por esta especie, así como probar la hipótesis de que en el embalse, a diferencia del ambiente natural, se producen cambios notables en la dieta entre los periodos. Los peces fueron muestreados mensualmente en el lago de la planicie de inundación y en el embalse durante dos periodos anuales con redes de enmalle. Para evaluar las diferencias en la abundancia de A. osteomystax empleamos la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis, y el análisis de la dieta se llevo a cabo con el uso de la frecuencia de ocurrencia y métodos volumétricos. Las diferencias temporales en la dieta fueron probadas con Kruskal-Wallis, se usaron los resultados a partir de un análisis de correspondencia sin tendencia. A. osteomystax fue significativamente más abundante en el lago de la llanura de inundación, donde las capturas fueron más altas, que en el embalse en casi todos los meses analizados, y no se registraron variaciones significativas en la abundancia entre los dos periodos tanto en el embalse como en el lago de inundación. La variación en la dieta entre los dos periodos, en los cuales habia un desfase de tres anos entre ellos, fue mucho menos pronunciada en el entorno natural, donde la disponibilidad de recursos es esencialmente regulada por la estacionalidad. Por lo tanto, nuestra hipótesis fue aceptada, es decir, las variaciones interanuales en la dieta de A. osteomystax son más relevantes en un ambiente artificial que en uno natural.

New impoundments provide opportunities to check whether species that present enough feeding flexibility in natural conditions may take advantage of this situation and, without reproductive restriction, can occupy the most conspicuous habitat in a large reservoir (open areas) and present higher success in the colonization of the new environment. We examined variations in the abundance and feeding of A. osteomystax in two environments, one natural (Sinha Mariana floodplain lake) and one dammed (Manso Reservoir), during two periods: the first year after the filling phase and three years later. Our goal was to evaluate the occupation of the new hábitat (Manso Reservoir), by this species, as well as to test the hypothesis that in the reservoir, unlike the natural environment, there are remarkable changes in diet between the periods. Fish were sampled monthly in the floodplain lake and in the reservoir during two annual periods using gillnets. To evaluate the differences in abundance of A. osteomystax we employed the Kruskal -Wallis test, and the diet analysis was carried out using frequency of occurrence and volumetric methods. Temporal differences in the diet were tested by Kruskal-Wallis test using the scores from a detrended correspondence analysis. A. osteomystax was significantly more abundant in the floodplain lake, where the captures were higher than in the reservoir in almost all months analyzed, and significant variations in abundance between the two periods were not recorded in either the reservoir or the floodplain lake. The diet variation between the two periods, which had a time lag of three years between them, was much less pronounced in the natural environment, where the resource availability is essentially regulated by seasonality. Thus, our hypothesis was accepted; that is, the interannual variations in the diet of A. osteomystax are more relevant in an artificial environment than in a natural one. Rev. Biol. Neste estudo avaliamos a dieta de Triportheus curtus, no lago Amapá, rio Acre (AC - Brasil), em três períodos distintos do ciclo hidrológico (pré-pulso, pulso e pós-pulso). As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente de outubro de 2008 a setembro de 2009, e o pulso de cheia ocorreu entre janeiro e junho de 2009. Após as despescas (19:00, 01:00, 07:00 e 13:00 hs) e identificação taxonômica, os indivíduos foram eviscerados e os estômagos preservados em formalina 4% para posterior análise. A dieta foi avaliada através do Índice de Importância Relativa (IRI), e as variações temporais (pré-pulso, pulso e pós-pulso) na dieta foram sumarizadas através de uma análise de ordenação (DCA). A dieta de T. curtus foi composta de insetos de diferentes ordens e microcrustáceos. No pré-pulso, aproximadamente 62% da dieta foi composta por Ostracoda. No pulso, T. curtus consumiu principalmente larvas de Chaoboridae (Diptera) (44,3%) e insetos terrestres (fragmentos) (33,7%). No pós-pulso, larvas de Chaoboridae representaram 80% da dieta. Estes resultados indicam que a dieta de T. curtus varia temporalmente, e que a espécie pode ser considerada oportunista, alterando sua dieta de acordo com a abundância dos recursos nas diferentes fases do ciclo hidrológico.

We analyzed the diet of Triportheus curtus in Lake Amapá on the Acre River (AC - Brazil), during three distinct phases of the hydrological cycle (pre-flooding, flooding, and post-flooding stages). The flooding occurred between January and June of 2009. Samples were collected monthly from October 2008 through September 2009. After collection (at 19:00, 01:00, 07:00, and 13:00 hs) and taxonomic identification, fish were eviscerated and their stomachs preserved in a 4% formalin solution for later analysis. The diet was evaluated by the Index of Relative Importance (IRI), and temporal variations (pre-flooding, flooding, and post-flooding) in the diet were summarized by an ordination technique (DCA). The diet of T. curtus was comprised of several orders of insects and microcrustaceans. In the pre-flooding stage, more than 62% of the diet consisted of Ostracoda. In the flooding phase, T. curtus fed mainly on Chaoboridae larvae (Diptera) (44.3%) and terrestrial insects (fragments) (33.7%). In the post-flooding phase, Chaoboridae comprised 80% of the diet. These results indicate that the utilization of food resources by T. curtus was variable, changing with alterations in the availability of resources, as influenced by the hydrological cycle. The population of T. curtus proved to be opportunistic, changing its diet in the course of the hydrological cycle.

Neste trabalho foi avaliada a estrutura trófica da ictiofauna na baía Sinhá Mariana (MT), no período de março de 2000 a fevereiro de 2001, com o objetivo de detectar qual o padrão alimentar exibido pelos peixes, durante as estações chuvosa e seca. A dieta de 26 espécies (1.294 estômagos) foi avaliada pelo método volumétrico. Insetos e peixes foram os itens mais consumidos pela maioria das espécies, sendo que o primeiro foi alimento dominante para 23% e 27% das espécies, respectivamente, na cheia e na seca e o segundo para 31% das espécies em ambas as estações. Através da análise de agrupamento (Distância Euclidiana) foram identificadas sete guildas tróficas na cheia (detritívora, herbívora, insetívora, lepidófaga, omnívora, piscívora e planctívora) e cinco na seca (detritívora, insetívora, lepidófaga, omnívora e piscívora). Os menores valores médios de amplitude de nicho trófico foram verificados para as guildas constituídas por espécies especialistas (detritívora, lepidófaga e piscívora), em ambos os períodos. Em oposição, as maiores médias foram observadas para a guilda omnívora, independente do período. Em geral, não houve variação sazonal na sobreposição alimentar das espécies. Em nível de comunidade, os coeficientes de sobreposição alimentar foram baixos (< 0,4) para cerca de 80% das espécies para cada período, indicando ampla partição de recursos alimentares. A assembléia de peixes mostrou tendência à especialização trófica, independente da estação considerada e apenas algumas espécies mudaram suas dietas. Assim, é possível considerar duas hipóteses: que não existe um padrão sazonal no uso dos recursos alimentares e/ou que provavelmente existam vários padrões, uma vez que cada um deles é baseado nas características do ambiente estudado e na composição taxonômica das espécies residentes.

We assessed the trophic structure of the fish fauna in Sinhá Mariana pond, Mato Grosso State, from March 2000 to February 2001. The aim was to determine the feeding patterns of the fish species during the rainy and dry seasons. The diets of 26 species (1,294 stomach contents) were determined by the volumetric method. Insects and fish were the most important food resources: insects were the dominant food of 23% and 27% of the species, respectively, in the rainy and dry season, and fish was the dominant item for 31% of the species in both seasons. Cluster analysis (Euclidean Distance) identified seven trophic guilds in the rainy season (detritivores, herbivores, insectivores, lepidophages, omnivores, piscivores and planktivores), and five trophic guilds in the dry season (detritivores, insectivores, lepidophages, omnivores and piscivores). The smallest mean values of diet breadth were observed for the specialist guilds (detritivores, lepidophages and piscivores), in both seasons. The widest means for diet breadth were observed for the omnivores, regardless of the season. In general, there was no seasonal variation in feeding overlap among the species studied. At the community level, diet overlap values between species were low (< 0.4) for 80% of the pairs in each season, suggesting wide partitioning of the food resource. The fish assemblage showed a tendency toward trophic specialization, regardless of the season, although several species changed their diets. We might consider two non-excludent hypothesis: that there is no pattern on the use of seasonal food resources and/or probably there are several patterns, because each one is based on characteristics of the studied site and the taxonomic composition of the resident species.

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar alterações na dieta de um peixe piscívoro (Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro) após mudanças na abundância de um peixe forrageiro (Moenkhausia dichroura) durante a colonização de um reservatório. Os peixes foram amostrados mensalmente entre março/2000 e fevereiro/2001 (período I) e março/2003 e fevereiro/2004 (período II), no reservatório de Manso (Mato Grosso, Brasil). A abundância de M. dichroura foi significativamente diferente entre os períodos, representando 9,6% dos indivíduos no período I e 66,4% no período II. No período I A. pantaneiro consumiu 41 presas, enquanto que no período II foram registradas 14 presas, sendo que M. dichroura foi a presa mais consumida, passando a representar 95% da dieta, enquanto no período I representava apenas 15%. A relação entre o tamanho do predador e da presa foi positiva em ambos os períodos, porém significativamente diferente. No período II pequenos e grandes predadores consumiram principalmente pequenas presas (M. dichroura). Os resultados mostraram que A. pantaneiro consumiu, no período II, a presa mais abundante e disponível, alterando a composição de sua dieta, amplitude do nicho alimentar e tamanho da presa. Estas alterações provavelmente causaram um decréscimo nos custos energéticos associados à procura da presa, maximizando o ganho de energia do predador.

The goal of this study was to investigate the alterations of diet of a piscivorous fish (Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro) following changes in abundance of a forage fish (Moenkhausia dichroura) during the trophic upsurge stage in a reservoir. Fish samplings were taken monthly in the Manso Reservoir (State of Mato Grosso, Brazil) from March 2000 to February 2001 (period I) and from March 2003 to February 2004 (period II). The abundance of Moenkhausia dichroura in the reservoir was significantly different in both periods, representing 9.6% of the individuals in period I and 66.4% in period II. Stomach contents analyses showed that the number of prey species consumed by A. pantaneiro decreased from 41 prey in period I to 14 in period II. In the last period M. dichroura was the most important prey, comprising 95% of the diet, in contrast with the period I when this species represented only 15% of the diet. The predator and prey size relationship was positive in both periods, however was significantly different, because small and large predators consumed mainly small prey (M. dichroura) in period II. Thus, the results showed that A. pantaneiro altered its diet composition, trophic niche breadth and prey sizes to feed on more abundant and accessible prey. These alterations probably caused a decrease in energy costs related to prey searching, maximizing the energy gain of the predator.

Foi investigada a dieta de Pachyurus bonariensis Steindachner, 1879 associando-a à variações espaciais, temporais e ontogenéticas. Os peixes foram coletados mensalmente de março/2000 a fevereiro/2001 e de agosto/2002 a fevereiro/2003 em duas baías do Pantanal, Chacororé e Sinhá Mariana. Conteúdos estomacais de 359 exemplares foram analisados através dos métodos de freqüência de ocorrência e volumétrico. A dieta foi composta essencialmente por larvas bentônicas de Chironomidae e Ephemeroptera, independente do local e período (seca e cheia) analisados. Entretanto, nota-se marcante diferença na composição alimentar de acordo com o tamanho do peixe. Os menores exemplares (comprimento padrão = 1,6 a 7,2 cm) consumiram preferencialmente Chironomidae e os maiores (comprimento padrão = 13,0 a 18,6 cm) Ephemeroptera. Conclui-se que P. bonariensis tem hábito alimentar bentívoro e especializado, devido principalmente ao restrito espectro alimentar aliado à posição e forma da boca adaptada a explorar o substrato.

Spatial, temporal and ontogenetic variations in the diet of Pachyurus bonariensis Steindachner, 1879 were analyzed. Fishes were taken monthly from March 2000 to February 2001 and from August 2002 to February 2003 in the Chacororé and Sinhá Mariana bays. Diet was determined analyzing 359 stomach contents. To express diet results, were used occurrence and volumetric methods. The individuals consumed expressive amount of Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera larvae, in both bays and periods (dry and wet). Ontogenetic analysis showed that small individuals (Standard length = 1.6 to 7.2 cm) ate mainly Chironomidae, whereas larger ones (Standard length = 13.0 to 18.6 cm) consumed mainly Ephemeroptera. Then it is possible to infer that P. bonariensis is benthic-feeding fish with specialized diet. This characteristic was attributed because its narrow niche breadth allied with position and form of its mouth adapted to feed on the bottom.

Este trabalho investigou padrões alimentares de peixes piscívoros antes e após a formação do reservatório de Salto Caxias, Paraná, Brasil, com base em estudos da dieta de Hoplias malabaricus, Oligosarcus longirostris, Rhamdia branneri e Rhamdia voulezi, e da disponibilidade de presas. As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente no período de março de 1997 a fevereiro de 1998 (pré-represamento) e de março de 2000 a fevereiro de 2001 (pós-represamento), no local do reservatório. Foram analisados 549 conteúdos estomacais e a composição da dieta foi descrita através das porcentagens de ocorrência e volume de cada item alimentar, as quais foram combinadas por um índice alimentar. O hábito piscívoro foi, em geral, mais evidente para H. malabaricus, O. longirostris e R. voulezi, enquanto que para R. branneri moluscos e crustáceos foram mais importantes que peixes. Após o represamento os peixes-presa mais consumidos, por três predadores, foram Astyanax sp. b e Cyphocharax modestus. Estas espécies estiveram entre as forrageiras mais capturadas após a formação do reservatório. Assim, conclui-se que mais do que uma preferência, o consumo por determinada presa é reflexo de sua disponibilidade, abundância e vulnerabilidade no ambiente represado.

This study investigated the feeding patterns of piscivorous fish before and after the filling of Salto Caxias Reservoir, Paraná State, Brazil. Specifically, it was determined if the diet of Hoplias malabaricus, Oligosarcus longirostris, Rhamdia branneri and Rhamdia voulezi altered according to prey availability. Fish were sampled monthly from March 1997 to February 1998 (pre-impoundment period) and from March 2000 to February 2001 (post-impoundment period) within the reservoir. Stomach contents of 549 individuals were analyzed and the diet was described as occurrence and volumetric percentage of each item combined in a feeding index. The piscivorous habit was, overall, more evident in H. malabaricus, O. longirostris and R. voulezi. However, for R. branneri mollusks and crabs were more important than fish. After the impoundment, most consumed prey was Astyanax sp. b and Cyphocharax modestus for three of the predators. These prey species were more abundant after the impoundment. Then, there are evidences that the availability, abundance and vulnerability of prey in the reservoir environment are the most important factors influencing predator’s choice.

Neste estudo avaliamos a plasticidade trófica em peixes. Nós esperamos que amostras obtidas com uma ampla escala temporal e espacial, incluindo mudanças ambientais como represamentos, nos permita cobrir a maior parte desta plasticidade. Foi avaliada também a eficiência do método de ordenação em discriminar os grupos tróficos baseado na dieta das espécies. As amostragens foram realizadas mensalmente de março/96 a fevereiro/99 em 17 estações de coleta na bacia do rio Corumbá antes e após a formação do reservatório de Corumbá. Foram analisados 9177 conteúdos estomacais, pertencentes a 64 espécies. As categorias tróficas foram discriminadas através de uma análise de agrupamento não hierárquica denominada K-means aplicada aos dados de dieta. A maioria das espécies apresentou elevada plasticidade trófica, consumindo uma grande variedade de itens alimentares. A disponibilidade dos recursos alimentares, estimada através de todos os conteúdos estomacais, foi similar entre os ambientes a exceção dos riachos, onde ocorreu maior heterogeneidade e os insetos terrestres tiveram grande importância. A análise K-means revelou resultados satisfatórios, identificando nove grupos tróficos (detritívoros, herbívoro-piscívoros, insetívoro-herbívoros, onívoros, invertívoros, insetívoros aquáticos, piscívoro-insetívoros, piscívoros e herbívoros).

In this paper we evaluate plasticity of fish concerning diet. We expect that sampling over a large temporal and spatial scale, including environmental changes such as impoundments, will allow us to cover most of the diet plasticity. We also evaluate the efficacy of ordination method in discriminating trophic groups based on fish species diet. Data were obtained from 17 sampling stations sampled monthly from March/96 to February/99 in the Corumbá river drainage, before and after the formation of the Corumba reservoir. Diet was determined analysing 9,177 stomach contents from 64 fish species. Trophic categories were discriminated by a non-hierarchic grouping analysis named k-means, applied to diet data. Most of the species presented great trophic plasticity, eating a great variety of food items. Resources availability, estimated from all fish stomach contents, was similar among environments, except in creeks, where it varied more with a large importance of terrestrial insects. K-means present satisfactory results, identifying nine trophic groups (detritivores, herbivore-piscivores, insectivore-herbivores, omnivores, invertivores, aquatic insectivores, piscivore-insectivores, piscivores and herbivores).

O hábito de consumir escamas tem sido registrado para várias espécies de Roeboides. Neste estudo foram examinados a variação ontogenética na dieta e o desenvolvimento dentário de três espécies de Roeboides (R. paranensis, R. prognathus e R. microlepis). Roeboides paranensis consumiu insetos, escamas e microcrustáceos, sendo que os menores indivíduos (<3,4 cm - CP) consumiram basicamente insetos, enquanto que escamas foram utilizadas apenas por indivíduos a partir de 3,4 cm. Para R. prognathus, escamas constituiu-se no alimento dominante em todos os tamanhos analisados. A dieta de R. microlepis foi composta principalmente por peixes inteiros, no entanto, os menores indivíduos (<5,4 cm) consumiram somente insetos. Durante a ontogenia, a migração dos dentes para o exterior da boca se inicia a partir de 3,7 cm em R. paranensis e de 6,5 cm em R. microlepis. Com o crescimento dos indivíduos, mais dentes migram para fora da boca e tornam-se mais desenvolvidos, o que reflete um consumo maior de escamas para as três espécies. R. prognathus foi a mais especialista, visto que escamas representou cerca de 80% da dieta. Esta espécie também apresenta maior número de dentes externos e mais desenvolvidos que as outras espécies.

Lepidophagy has been recorded in various species of Roeboides. In this study we analyzed ontogenetic variation in diet and dental development of three Roeboides species (R. paranensis, R. prognathus and R. microlepis). Roeboides paranensis consumed mainly insects, scales and microcrustaceans, and the smaller individuals (<3.4 cm - SL) consumed mostly insects. Scale were only consumed by individuals greater than 3.4 cm. Scales were the dominant item in the diet in all sizes of R. prognathus. The diet of R. microlepis was composed primarily of whole fishes, however, the smaller individuals (<5.4 cm) consumed only insects. During ontogeny, exterior migration of teeth in the mouth started at 3.7 cm in R. paranensis and 6.5 cm in R. microlepis. As body length increased more teeth migrated exteriorly. This leads to greater consumption of scales by three species. Roeboides prognathus appeared to be most specialized on scales, since they composed 80% of the diet, and was the species with the highest number of external teeth and the most developed.
