Abstract Background: Virtual reality is an alternative therapeutic resource to be inserted into cardiovascular rehabilitation, stimulating the practice of physical activity through man-machine interaction. Objective: To compare the effects of conventional and virtual reality cardiac rehabilitation on body composition and functional capacity in patients with heart disease. Methods: Randomized clinical trial with 27 cardiac patients divided into conventional rehabilitation group (CRG) and virtual reality rehabilitation group (VRG). They underwent a rehabilitation program with 60-minute training sessions twice a week for eight weeks. The VRG training consisted of exercises from the Xbox 360® with Kinect(tm), using YourShape(tm) and Dance Central 3(tm) games. The CRG used conventional treadmills for aerobic exercise and free weights for resistance exercise. Bioimpedance and 6-minute walk test (6MWT) were evaluated at baseline and after training. For main outcome analysis, Student t and Mann Whitney tests were used with a 5% significance level. Results: The VRG showed a significant increase in body fat percentage and fat weight when compared to the CRG, and a smaller amount of total water. There was a significant improvement in functional capacity evidenced by the increase in the distance covered in the 6MWT (54.00 m and 32.25 m in the CRG and VRG, respectively), but the gains did not differ between the groups. Conclusion: The two rehabilitation modalities had no effect on the body composition of the groups. In addition, the improvement in functional capacity was similar in both groups.

The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of passive smoking, in soleus and gastrocnemius muscles associated with physical exercise by swimming during pregnancy and lactation of rats. Twenty-four rats were divided: GF (exposed to cigarette smoke), GC (control), GFN (underwent to the swimming program and exposed to cigarette smoke) and GN (underwent to the swimming program). On the first day of pregnancy procedure of exposure to cigarette smoke began, consisting in 30 minutes twice a day for six weeks. During the same period the swimming program began, which lasted 60 min every day untilthe 21st day of lactation. Soleus and gastrocnemius muscles, were obtained for histological, histochemical, morphometric analysis and fiber profiling. In histology, the groups GF and GFN showed infiltrations, necrotic and phagocytized fibers, centralized nuclei, splittings and coiling; in GN changes were observed due to exercise adaptations, infiltrations, sarcolemal lesion, polymorphic, atrophic and angular fibers. In the histochemical analysis of the groups GF and GFN there was enzymatic activity and amorphous formazan aggregates in subsarcolemmal positions, however in GN the same changes were found in lower frequency and intensity. In regard to the measureof the cross-sectionofmuscle fibers there weren't significant differences among the groups, as well as, in the frequency of types of fibers of the gastrocnemius. It is concluded that aerobic exercise is not enough to impede morphological and histochemical changes caused in an animal model of pregnant and lactating associated with smoking, and the stress not influence the types and size of muscle fibers.

EL objetivo fue analizar los efectos del tabaquismo pasivo sobre los músculos sóleo y gastrocnemio asociado con el entrenamiento corporal de natación durante la preñez y lactancia de ratas. Veinticuatro ratas se dividieron en grupos: GF (expuestos al humo de cigarrillo), GC (control), GFN (sometido al programa de natación y expuesto al humo del cigarrillo) y GN (sometido al programa de natación). El procedimiento de exposición al humo del cigarrillo comenzó primer día de preñez, durante 30 min dos veces al día por seis semanas. Durante el mismo período, comenzó el programa de natación, con una duración de 60 min todos los días hasta el día 21 de lactancia. Se extrajeron los músculos sóleo y gastrocnemio, y se realizó el análisis histológico, morfométrico histoquímico y de perfiles de fibra. En la histología, los grupos GF y GFN mostraron infiltraciones, fibras necróticas y fagocitadas, núcleos centralizados, divisiones y enrollamientos; en GN se observaron cambios debido a las adaptaciones de ejercicio tales como infiltraciones, lesión del sarcolema, y fibras polimórficas, atróficas y angulares. En el análisis histoquímico de los grupos GF y GFN hubo actividad enzimática y se formaron agregados amorfos en posiciones subsarcolemales; en el grupo GN se encontraron los mismos cambios en menor frecuencia e intensidad. No hubo diferencias en las medidas de las secciones transversales de las fibras musculares entre los grupos, así como en la frecuencia de los tipos de fibras del músculo gastrocnemio. Se concluye que el ejercicio aeróbico no es suficiente para impedir los cambios morfológicos e histoquímicos causados en un modelo animal de ratas preñadas en periodo de lactancia asociados con el tabaquismo, y el estrés no influye en el tipo y tamaño de las fibras musculares.

INTRODUÇÃO: Os fumantes sofrem redução da massa muscular e da resistência à fadiga e possivelmente a prática de atividade física contribua positivamente neste quadro. OBJETIVO: Este estudo teve por objetivo analisar as adaptações da musculatura esquelética frente à interação da prática de atividade física e exposição à fumaça de cigarro. MÉTODOS: 32 ratos machos foram divididos em grupos expostos à fumaça de cigarro, exercitados (G1) e sedentários (G3), e não expostos à fumaça, exercitados (G2) e sedentários (G4). A exposição à fumaça foi realizada mediante combustão de 10 cigarros em uma câmara de inalação durante 30 minutos, duas vezes ao dia, cinco dias por semana, durante 15 dias; o exercício aeróbio foi composto por sessões diárias de 60 minutos de caminhada em esteira, cinco dias por semana. Após o sacrifício, o músculo sóleo foi coletado e seus cortes foram corados pela técnica de HE e submetidos ao método histoquímico NADH-TR. RESULTADOS: O grupo G1 apresentou maior quantidade de alterações musculares, bem como ausência de atividade enzimática, o mesmo ocorrendo no G3, porém com menor intensidade; no G2 foi observado padrão normal para fibras exercitadas, estando as fibras do G4 preservadas. Quanto à morfometria, houve diferença significante para o fator exercício (p = 0,007), enquanto não foram observadas diferenças significantes para o fator exposição à fumaça (p = 0,668) e para a interação exposição à fumaça e exercício (p = 0,077). CONCLUSÃO: A interação entre inalação de fumaça de cigarro e exercício, realizada durante 15 dias em ratos machos Wistar adultos, acentuou as alterações histológicas do músculo sóleo, levando a uma alteração da atividade enzimática e acarretando em aumento do diâmetro das fibras musculares

INTRODUCTION: Smokers have a reduction in the muscle mass and in the fatigue resistance and, possibly, physical activity practice contributes positively to this state. OBJECTIVE: This study had as objective to analyze the adaptations of the skeletal musculature to the interaction between physical activity practice and cigarette smoke exposure. METHODS: 32 male rats were divided in groups exposed to the cigarette smoke, exercised (G1) and sedentary (G3), and not exposed to cigarette smoke, exercised (G2) and sedentary (G4). The exposured to the smoke was done by the combustion of 10 cigarettes in an inhalation camera during 30 minutes, twice a day, five days per week, during 15 days; the aerobic exercise consisted of daily walking sessions of 60 minutes on treadmill, once a day, five days per week. After sacrifice, soleus muscle was obtained and its cuts were stained by HE technique and submitted to the hystochemical method of NADH-TR. RESULTS: Group G1 presented more muscle alterations, and also lack of enzymatic activity, the same occurring in G3, but with less intensity; G2 presented normal pattern to exercised fibers, being the fibers of G4 preserved. Regarding the morphometry, there was significant difference for the exercise factor (p = 0.007), while no significant differences were observed for the smoke exposure factor (p = 0.668) and for the interaction of exposure to smoke and exercise (p = 0.077). CONCLUSION: The interaction between cigarette smoke exposure and physical activity during 15 days in male wistar adult rats, accentuated the histological changes in the soleus muscle, causing an alteration in the enzymatic activity and increase in the fiber diameter

OBJETIVOS: o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar mortalidade, peso e comprimento corporal, e o músculo gastrocnêmio dos filhotes de ratas prenhes submetidas ao programa de natação associado ao tabagismo passivo. MÉTODOS: vinte e quatro ratas foram divididas em quatro grupos: GF (exposto à fumaça de cigarro), GC (Controle), GFN (submetido ao programa de natação e exposto à fumaça de cigarro) e GN (submetido ao programa de natação). A mortalidade e a aferição do peso e comprimento dos filhotes foram realizadas em quatro momentos. O músculo gastrocnêmio dos filhotes foi obtido para avaliação do desenvolvimento muscular. RESULTADOS: a média do nascimento de filhotes foi menor para os grupos GF (10,2) e GFN (10,3) e maior para o GN (12,8). No nascimento, somente o GFN apresentou medidas de peso (p=0,016) e comprimento (p=0,02) significantemente inferiores ao Controle, já na lactação foram os grupos expostos à fumaça de cigarro. O grupo GFN apresentou retardo no desenvolvimento muscular em relação ao GC (p=0,03). CONCLUSÃO: O tabagismo passivo durante a prenhez e lactação exerceu influência negativa sobre o número, peso e comprimento corporal dos filhotes do nascimento ao desmame e sobre o desenvolvimento muscular; o programa de natação influenciou positivamente tais variáveis no momento do nascimento, entretanto, não possibilitou os mesmos benefícios durante a lactação; e a associação destes influenciou negativamente tais medidas.

PURPOSE: the purpose of this study was to evaluate mortality, weight and body length, and the gastrocnemius muscle of the offspring of pregnant rats submitted to a swimming program associated with second-hand smoke. METHODS: twenty-four rats were divided into four groups: GF (exposed to cigarette smoke), GC (control), GFN (submitted to the swimming program and exposed to cigarette smoke), and GN (submitted to the swimming program). The mortality, weight and length of the offspring were measured at four time points. The gastrocnemius muscle of the pups was obtained for evaluation of muscle development. RESULTS: the average number of offspring was lower for GF (10.2) and GFN (10.3) and higher for GN (12.8). At birth, only GFN showed significantly lower weight (p=0.016) and length (p=0.02), whereas during lactation the groups exposed to cigarette smoke showed significantly lower weight. GFN had delayed muscle development compared to GC (p=0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Passive smoking during pregnancy and lactation negatively influenced number, weight and body length of offspring from birth to weaning and muscle development, and the swimming program positively influenced these variables at birth, although it did not provide the same benefits during lactation; and their association negatively affected these measures.

As lesões musculares têm sido observadas como as mais frequentes nos esportes. Considerando a produção de espécies reativas de oxigênio como um fator de risco para instalação de lesões e características antioxidantes e anti-inflamatórias do ômega-3, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar as alterações histológicas e morfométricas do músculo sóleo de ratos que realizaram natação, associado a uma dieta suplementada com ômega-3. Para sua realização foram utilizados 31 ratos Wistar divididos em quatro grupos, sendo os grupos A e C suplementados com azeite de oliva e B e D com 3g/dia de ômega-3 por quatro semanas. Os grupos C e D foram submetidos à natação cinco dias/semana por 28 dias, com acréscimo de 5% do peso corporal a partir da segunda semana, enquanto que os grupos A e B não realizaram treinamento. Após este período os animais foram sacrificados, o músculo sóleo retirado e corado com Hematoxilina-eosina para avaliação morfológica. Análise de variância bifatorial, com nível de significância de 5%, foi utilizada para análise dos valores do menor diâmetro das fibras musculares. Os grupos A e B (sedentários) apresentaram padrões histológicos de normalidade. O grupo C apresentou aumento do tecido endomisial e do número de núcleos, presença de fibras fagocitadas e de contornos poligonais não mantidos, enquanto que o grupo D apresentou poucas fibras fagocitadas e de contornos poligonais preservados. Com relação à medida do menor diâmetro das fibras musculares, as análises mostraram diferenças para o fator treinamento, mas não para o fator suplementação e a interação entre eles. As alterações histológicas induzidas pelo exercício foram atenuadas no grupo suplementado com ômega-3, sugerindo um efeito protetor da suplementação, contudo, o aumento do diâmetro das fibras para os grupos expostos ao exercício está relacionado ao efeito do treinamento e não à suplementação.

Muscle injuries have been observed as the most frequent in sports. Considering the production of Reactive Oxygen Species as a risk factor for installation of injuries and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics of Omega-3, the objective of this study was to evaluate the histological and morphometric changes of the soleus muscle of rats that practiced swimming, associated with a diet supplemented with Omega-3. 31 Wistar rats divided into 4 groups were used, namely groups A and C supplemented with olive oil and B and D with 3g/day of Omega-3, for 4 weeks. Groups C and D were submitted to swimming for 5 days / week during 28 days, with addition of 5% of body weight from the second week on; while groups A and B did not perform training. After this period the animals were sacrificed, the soleus muscle removed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for morphological evaluation. Bifactorial analysis of variance with significance level of 5% was used for analysis of values of smallest diameter of the muscle fibers. Groups A and B (sedentary) presented normal histological patterns. Group C showed increase of endomisial tissue and number of nuclei, presence of phagocytized fibers and not maintained polygonal contours, whereas group D showed few phagocytized fibers and polygonal contours preserved. Regarding the measurement of the smallest diameter of the muscle fibers, the analyses showed differences for the training factor, but not for the supplementation factor or interaction between them. The histological changes induced by exercise were attenuated in the group supplemented with Omega-3, suggesting hence a protective effect of supplementation; however, the diameter increase of the fibers for the groups exposed to exercise is related to the training effect and not to supplementation.
