RESUMO Espécies que produzem sementes com tegumento rígido representam um sério problema, pois esta estrutura restringe a entrada de água, o que dificulta a germinação. O heteromorfismo do tegumento em Bowdichia virgilioides faz com que a embebição de água varie substancialmente e, portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a relação da cor do tegumento com a permeabilidade e viabilidade em Bowdichia virgilioides. As sementes foram separadas em cinco cores diferentes (amarelado/alaranjado, alaranjado, alaranjado/ avermelhado, avermelhado e vermelho ferrugíneo) e os seguintes parâmetros foram analisados: absorção de água, germinação, mortalidade, viabilidade, sincronia e potencial máximo de germinação. A cor foi um fator determinante para a maioria dos parâmetros avaliados. As sementes com camadas amareladas, alaranjadas e alaranjados/avermelhado tendem a ser pouco permeáveis à água, enquanto as sementes com camadas avermelhadas ou vermelho ferrugíneo são altamente permeáveis. Os resultados indicaram que sementes com coloração avermelhada apresentaram maior potencial fisiológico indicando provável relação com o ponto de maturação da espécie. Porém, nas sementes da espécie estudada, independentemente da coloração, a germinação foi tardia, com baixa sincronia e baixa contagem diária de germinação, características típicas de dormência.

ABSTRACT Species that produce seeds with a rigid integument represent a serious problem because their impermeable coat restricts the entry of water, which makes germination difficult. The heteromorphism of the integument in Bowdichia virgilioides causes water imbibition to vary substantially and, therefore, the objective of this work was to study the relation of seed coat color with permeability and viability in Bowdichia virgilioides. Seeds were separated into five different colors (yellowish-orange, orange, orange/reddish, reddish, and rusty red) and the following parameters were analyzed: water absorption, germination, mortality, viability, synchrony, and maximum potential of germination. The color was a determining factor for most of the evaluated parameters. The seeds with yellowish or orange/reddish coats tend to be little permeable to water while seeds with reddish or rusty red coats are highly permeable. The results indicated that seeds with reddish color had greater physiological potential indicating a probable relationship with the maturation point of the species. However, in the seeds of the species studied, irrespective of coloring, germination was late with low synchrony and low daily seed germination count, typical characteristics of dormancy.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar o retorno social da alfabetização em relação ao tabagismo em analfabetos que residem com indivíduos alfabetizados. Método Estudo transversal que utilizou dados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD) de 2008. Foram considerados fumantes aqueles que relataram consumir algum produto de tabaco em frequência diária ou menor que diária. O perfil de alfabetização de indivíduos residentes no domicílio foi identificado. Foram realizadas regressões de Poisson ajustadas para cor da pele, idade e nível máximo de instrução no domicílio. As análises foram separadas em quatro grupos: homens da zona rural; homens da zona urbana; mulheres da zona rural; e mulheres da zona urbana. Resultados Para os homens da zona urbana, observou-se que a presença de apenas mulheres alfabetizadas nos domicílios foi fator de proteção contra o tabagismo (razão de prevalência, RP: 0,77; IC95%: 0,71 a 0,82) em relação aos domicílios onde todos os homens eram analfabetos. Esse mesmo efeito protetor foi encontrado para os homens da zona rural (RP: 0,79; IC95%: 0,73 a 0,85). Já a presença de apenas homens alfabetizados convivendo com analfabetos homens não surtiu efeito de proteção ao tabagismo em nenhum caso (RP: 0,93; IC95%: 0,83 a 1,03 para a subamostra de residência urbana; e RP: 0,99; IC95%: 0,88 a 1,11 para a subamostra de residência rural). Mulheres analfabetas se beneficiaram da alfabetização tanto de homens (RP: 0,77; IC95%: 0,71 a 0,84 na subamostra de residência urbana; e RP: 0,78; IC95%: 0,69 a 0,89 na subamostra de residência rural) quanto de mulheres (RP: 0,81; IC95%: 0,72 a 0,92 na subamostra de residência urbana; e RP: 0,75; IC95%: 0,60 a 0,93 na subamostra de residência rural). Conclusões A alfabetização de mulheres parece ter beneficiado os analfabetos de ambos os sexos residentes no domicílio. Esse resultado corrobora relatos anteriores da literatura que apontam amplas vantagens da escolarização de mulheres.

ABSTRACT Objective To investigate the social impact of literacy on the smoking behavior of illiterate individuals who share the household with literate individuals. Method This cross-sectional study employed data from the 2008 Brazilian National Household Survey (Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios, PNAD). Smokers were defined as individuals reporting use of any tobacco product daily or less than daily. The literacy profiles of residents were identified. Poisson regressions adjusted for skin color, age, and maximum level of literacy in the household were performed. Four groups were analyzed: men living in rural areas, men living in urban areas, women living in rural areas, and women living in urban areas. Results For urban men, the presence of literate women only in the household was a protection factor against smoking (prevalence ratio, PR: 0.77; 95%CI: 0.71-0.82) vs. households in which all the males were illiterate. The same protective effect was found for rural men (PR: 0.79; 95%CI: 0.73-0.85). In turn, the presence of literate men only living in the same household with illiterate men did not provide protection against smoking in any case (PR: 0.93; 95%CI: 0.83-1.03 for the urban subsample; and PR: 0.99; 95%CI: 0.88-1.11 for the rural subsample). Illiterate women benefited from the presence of both literate men (PR: 0.77; 95%CI: 0.71-0.84 for the urban sample; and PR: 0.78; 95%CI: 0.69-0.89 for the rural subsample) and literate women (PR: 0.81; 95%CI: 0.72-0.92 for the urban subsample; and PR: 0.75; IC95%: 0.60-0.93 for the rural subsample). Conclusions Literate women seem to have positively affected illiterate co-residents of both sexes. This result is in agreement with reports showing broad advantages of female schooling.

ResumoObjetivo:Associar o estado nutricional e a autopercepção do estado nutricional com a experimentação de drogas lícitas em adolescentes.Métodos:Estudo transversal no qual 210 adolescentes responderam a um questionário sobre experimentação de álcool e tabaco e sobre suas autopercepções nutricionais. Foi analisada a concordância entre autopercepção nutricional do adolescente e seu estado nutricional, bem como associações entre o estado nutricional, a autopercepção nutricional, sexo, idade e presença de tabagistas em casa com a experimentação de álcool e tabaco. As variáveis foram analisadas separadamente em análise bivariada e, a seguir, análise múltipla determinou fatores associados à experimentação.Resultados:Participaram do estudo 210 adolescentes com mediana de idade de 148 meses, 56,6% do sexo feminino. Do total da amostra, 6,6% já experimentaram cigarro e 20% já experimentaram álcool; 32,3% tinham Z-escore IMC≥1 e 12,85% tinham Z-escore IMC≥2 e 50,7% acertaram suas classificações nutricionais. Após análise multivariada, apenas a autoimagem sobre o peso influenciou estatisticamente na experimentação de fumo. Pacientes que se identificavam com peso muito alto apresentaram maior chance de experimentação de fumo (odds ratio (OR) 13,57; intervalo de confiança (95% IC) 2,05-89,8; p=0,007); em relação ao uso de álcool, adolescentes que se identificavam com peso alto apresentaram chance de uso de álcool 2,40 vezes maior do que crianças que se viam com peso normal (IC 95% 1,08-5,32; p=0,031).Conclusões:Adolescentes com autopercepção de excesso de peso podem constituir um grupo de risco para a experimentação de álcool e tabaco.

AbstractObjective:To associate the nutritional status and the self-perception of nutritional status with the use of licit drugs among adolescents.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted in which 210 adolescents answered a questionnaire on alcohol and tobacco experimentation and self-perceptions about their nutritional status. The correspondence between the adolescents' perception of their own nutritional status and actual nutritional status was analyzed, as well as associations between nutritional status, self-perception of nutritional status, gender, age, and presence of smokers at home with alcohol and tobacco use. The variables were analyzed separately in a bivariate analysis and, subsequently, a multivariate analysis determined the factors associated with drug use.Results:The study included 210 adolescents with a median age of 148 months; 56.6% were females. Of the total sample, 6.6% have tried cigarettes, and 20% have tried alcohol; 32.3% had BMI Z-Score ≥1, 12.85% had BMI Z-Score ≥2, and 50.7% had a correct perception of his/her weight. After a multivariate analysis, only the self-perception about weight statistically influenced experimentation of tobacco, and patients who identified themselves as having very high weight were more likely to experiment tobacco (odds ratio (OR) 13.57; confidence interval (95% CI) 2.05-89.8; p=0.007); regarding alcohol use, adolescents who identified themselves as having high weight were 2.4 times more likely to experiment with alcohol than adolescents that identified themselves as having normal weight (95% CI 1.08-5.32, p=0.031).Conclusions:Adolescents with self-perception of excess weight may constitute a risk group for alcohol and tobacco use.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of excess body weight in the pediatric ward of University Hospital and to test both the association between initial nutritional diagnosis and the length of stay and the in-hospital variation in nutritional status. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study based on information entered in clinical records from University Hospital. The data were collected from a convenience sample of 91 cases among children aged one to 10 years admitted to the hospital in 2009. The data that characterize the sample are presented in a descriptive manner. Additionally, we performed a multivariate linear regression analysis adjusted for age and gender. RESULTS: Nutritional classification at baseline showed that 87.8% of the children had a normal weight and that 8.9% had excess weight. The linear regression models showed that the average weight loss z-score of the children with excess weight compared with the group with normal weight was −0.48 (p = 0.018) and that their length of stay was 2.37 days longer on average compared with that of the normal-weight group (p = 0.047). CONCLUSIONS: The length of stay and loss of weight at the hospital may be greater among children with excess weight than among children with normal weight.
