Abstract The increase in soil organic matter (SOM) content contributes to the mitigation of the effects of global climate change; thus, it is important to know its levels. However, the SOM analysis can eventually be expensive and time consuming, as well as generating toxic waste. The measurement of soil color may be an indirect method more practical to estimate the SOM than traditional techniques. The principal aim of the study was to use color parameters through the CIE Lab system and some color indices, such as saturation and redness indices, to estimate the SOM in a karst area of the municipality of Chetumal in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. The percentage of SOM was measured in 50 soil samples by conventional methods while the soil color was analyzed with the CIE Lab system. Both variables were correlated with the redness index. Based on color, the samples were separated into five groups, ranging from pinkish white to brownish gray. Multiple regression equations (SOM vs soil color parameters) were performed for each group and a medians comparison analysis was applied. The correlation adjustment between the redness index and SOM is R2> 0.86. The values of the multiple regression equations were R2> 0.8. We conclude that the soil redness index, now named soil organic matter index, can be used as a relatively quick approach to estimate the percentage of SOM in karst areas.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The intensity of the thromboprophylaxis needed as a potential factor for preventing inpatient mortality due to coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between anticoagulation intensity and COVID-19 survival. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective observational study in a tertiary-level hospital in Spain. METHODS: Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) status was ascertained based on prescription at admission. To control for immortal time bias, anticoagulant use was analyzed as a time-dependent variable. RESULTS: 690 patients were included (median age, 72 years). LMWH was administered to 615 patients, starting from hospital admission (89.1%). 410 (66.7%) received prophylactic-dose LMWH; 120 (19.5%), therapeutic-dose LMWH; and another 85 (13.8%) who presented respiratory failure, high D-dimer levels (> 3 mg/l) and non-worsening of inflammation markers received prophylaxis of intermediate-dose LMWH. The overall inpatient-mortality rate was 38.5%. The anticoagulant nonuser group presented higher mortality risk than each of the following groups: any LMWH users (HR 2.1; 95% CI: 1.40-3.15); the prophylactic-dose heparin group (HR 2.39; 95% CI, 1.57-3.64); and the users of heparin dose according to biomarkers (HR 6.52; 95% CI, 2.95-14.41). 3.4% of the patients experienced major hemorrhage. 2.8% of the patients developed an episode of thromboembolism. CONCLUSIONS: This observational study showed that LMWH administered at the time of admission was associated with lower mortality among unselected adult COVID-19 inpatients. The magnitude of the benefit may have been greatest for the intermediate-dose subgroup. Randomized controlled trials to assess the benefit of heparin within different therapeutic regimes for COVID-19 patients are required.

Abstract This study evaluated the microbiological quality and prevalence of Escherichia coli and diarrheagenic E. coli pathotypes (DEP) among fresh-squeezed orange juice from street vendors and their hygienic practices. Sixty orange juice stalls in Mexico City were visited, and 60 samples were purchased. Most (65%) of the street vendors had poor hygienic practices. Twelve (20%) prepared orange juice at the time of purchase, while the other stalls sold already-squeezed orange juice. All samples analyzed were positive for aerobic mesophilic bacteria, with limits ranging from 1 to 6.8 log CFU/mL. A total of 35 (58.3%), 27 (45%), and 5 (8.3%) samples were positive for total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and E. coli, respectively, present at concentrations ranging from < 3 to > 1100, < 3 to > 1100, and < 3 to 53 MPN/mL, respectively. Two samples harbored DEP at concentrations of 3.6 and 9.2 MPN/mL. Both samples harbored Shiga toxin-producing E. coli strains, positive for the Shiga toxin 2 (stx2) locus. Our results suggest that consumption of fresh-squeezed street-vended orange juice may pose a health risk for consumers, revealing the necessity to implement adequate hygiene and safety practices to protect the health of consumers.

ABSTRACT Background: Understanding the toxicity mechanism of arsenic has been hampered by biological, chemical factors, including the dose response ratio, the specificity and sensitivity of species used in bioassays from toxicological studies to understand their toxicodynamics. Goals: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the embryotoxic, teratogenic and genotoxic effect caused by exposure to arsenic, through the frequency analysis of malformations and micronuclei in peripheral blood erythrocytes in zebrafish. Methods: The toxicity curve of arsenic in zebrafish embryos was calculated from exposure to concentrations between 0.0031 and 0.05 mg L-1 of sodium arsenite (NaAsO2) for 72 hours to determine the mean lethal concentration (LC50) for the embryotoxicity and teratogenesis test. For the genotoxicity test, the calculation of the toxicity curve with adult zebrafish that were exposed to concentrations between 0.035 and 0.044 mg L-1 for 48 hours was previously performed in order to establish LC50. Results: The effect of sodium arsenite was shown to be statistically positive for embryotoxicity and teratogenesis tests at the evaluated concentrations. Exposure to sodium arsenite resulted in abnormal embryonic development at each of the test concentrations, in addition to malformations. And a statistically significant increase in the frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes of 0.035, showing genotoxic damage of arsenic. Conclusions: This study showed that the induction of nuclear abnormalities in erythrocytes, as well as abnormalities in embryonic development, are extremely sensitive indicators in the study of toxicological effects, and suggest that the risk potential of this metalloid should be tested in future research.

SUMMARY: To evaluate in an integral way the morphometric parameters of the atlas (C1) vertebra in the Mexican population of relevance in performing surgical procedures of the craniocervical junction in order to provide quantitative and essential data for its realization. For this study, a total of 576 dry C1 vertebrae of contemporary Mexican population were used. Eleven measurements were carried out regarding the morphology of C1. The measurements were made bilaterally using a millimeter digital vernier with an accuracy of 0.01 millimeters and a statistical analysis was applied. A total of 576 atlas vertebrae (C1) were measured bilaterally, all our measurements were reported in millimeters. The average width of the lateral masses was 14.87 mm ± 1.38 mm. The average height of the lateral masses was 4.05 mm ± 0.93 mm. The average width of the transverse foramen was 5.93 mm ± 0.98 mm. The average length of the transverse foramen was 6.96 mm ± 0.98 mm. The average height of the transverse foramen was 5.76 mm ± 1.31 mm. The average width of the groove of the vertebral artery was 18.87 mm ± 1.3 mm. The average distance between the midline and the medial edge of the vertebral artery groove on the anterior surface of the posterior arch of C1 on its superior surface was 12.47 mm ± 3.14 mm. The average distance between the midline and the medial border of the vertebral artery groove on the posterior surface of the posterior arch of C1 on its upper face was 18.75 mm ± 3.94 mm. The average distance between the midline and the lateral border of the vertebral artery groove on the anterior surface of the posterior arch of C1 on its superior surface was 19.7 mm ± 2.52 mm. The average distance between the midline and the lateral border of the vertebral artery groove on the posterior surface of the posterior arch of C1 on its superior surface was 29.52 mm ± 3.23. Our study shows that the measurements made in our population present differences with respect to what is currently reported in the literature. It is necessary to have knowledge of vertebral morphology in our population to reduce the error window when performing surgical procedures involving this segment.

ABSTRACT Objective Perform a literature review about systems of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance for frontier zones and the points of entry of Colombia. Materials and Methods A systematic literature review using the Prisma methodology, MeSH and DECS terms, was developed in PubMed and BVS bibliographic databases between 2000 and 2014. We included 51 documents according to inclusion-exclusion criteria and we proposed and discussed these categories: health services, mental health, health status and social determinants. Results The analysis makes it possible to evidence that the epidemiological and sanitary surveillance of borders and entry points worldwide, focused mainly on axes such as mental health, transmissible events and events of non-communicable conditions. In addition, the importance of comprehensive care in health services, as well as the analysis of the health status of immigrant population under the territorial, ethnic and cultural differential approach. However, there are few experiences with a social determinants analysis in borders zone and / or entry points. Conclusions Differences in the context, health systems, information systems and priorities of each country make the exchange and cooperation between borders challenging. It is necessary to have instruments of cooperation between neighboring countries and a common information based on the Social Determinants of Health.

It is necessary to have instruments of cooperation between neighboring countries and a common information based on the Social Determinants of Health.

Abstract: Objective: REMEHIP is a prospective, multicentre registry on pulmonary hypertension. The main objective will be to identify the clinical profile, medical care, therapeutic trends and outcomes in adult and pediatric Mexican patients with well-characterized pulmonary hypertension. Methods: REMEHIP a multicenter registry began in 2015 with a planned recruitment time of 12 months and a 4-year follow-up. The study population will comprise a longitudinal cohort study, collecting data on patients with prevalent and incident pulmonary hypertension. Will be included patients of age >2 years and diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension by right heart catheterization within Group 1 and Group 4 of the World Health Organization classification. The structure, data collection and data analysis will be based on quality current recommendations for registries. The protocol has been approved by institutional ethics committees in all participant centers. All patients will sign an informed consent form. Currently in Mexico, there is a need of observational registries that include patients with treatment in the everyday clinical practice so the data could be validated and additional information could be obtained versus the one from the clinical trials. In this way, REMEHIP emerges as a link among randomized clinical trials developed by experts and previous Mexican experience.

The choice of generator start up sequence affects directly the available generation capacity in the power system restoration process. In this paper an automated planning based method is used to calculate the startup sequence generating units in the electric power system restoration process. An action-based formulation is presented where several complex factors are involved such us: the combinatorial nature, expert knowledge, several restrictions and changing condition sover time that must be met and the optimization of several numerical resources. The test results on the IEEE39-bus system show that the method is very efficient to obtain accurate and optimized plans to restore the generation system using an automated planning algorithm based on heuristic search with capabilities of reasoning in continuous time.

The effect of refrigerated 48h transport and 4 days storage on the quality and shelf life of the whole lion's paw scallop Nodipecten subnodosus gonad was evaluated. Proximal composition, adenosine 5´triphosphate (ATP) and related products, K-value, total volatile bases (TVB-N), trimethylamine (TMA-N), pH, fatty acid profile and microbiological analyses were quantified. Gonad holds a significant composition of essential fatty acids while levels of gonadal ATP were initially low; moreover, K-value of the gonad remained constant. With respect to TVB-N and TMA-N, only the former exceeded allowed limits. The pH level showed no significant variation during storage and, despite the high level of TVB-N, according to the TMA-N as well as microbiological analyses it was demonstrated innocuity after 4 days under the transportation and storage conditions utilized.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectocontagious respiratory disease caused by members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. A 7 base pair (bp) deletion in the locus polyketide synthase (pks)15/1 is described as polymorphic among members of the M. tuberculosis complex, enabling the identification of Euro-American, Indo-Oceanic and Asian lineages. The aim of this study was to characterise this locus in TB isolates from Mexico. One hundred twenty clinical isolates were recovered from the states of Veracruz and Estado de Mexico. We determined the nucleotide sequence of a ± 400 bp fragment of the locus pks15/1, while genotypic characterisation was performed by spoligotyping. One hundred and fifty isolates contained the 7 bp deletion, while five had the wild type locus. Lineages X (22%), LAM (18%) and T (17%) were the most frequent; only three (2%) of the isolates were identified as Beijing and two (1%) EAI-Manila. The wild type pks15/1 locus was observed in all Asian lineage isolates tested. Our results confirm the utility of locus pks15/1 as a molecular marker for identifying Asian lineages of the M. tuberculosis complex. This marker could be of great value in the epidemiological surveillance of TB, especially in countries like Mexico, where the prevalence of such lineages is unknown.

The Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis) is an aquatic mammal that inhabits freshwater environments and is endemic to the Amazon Basin. The presence of Toxoplasma gondii antibodies was investigated in 19 manatees in one rescue unit in the northern region of Peru. Antibodies to T. gondii were detected in 12 (63.2 %) of 19 animals by using the modified agglutination test (titer, 1:25), and no association between sex and age of the animals and the presence of T. gondii antibodies was observed (p < 0.05). The results suggest a contamination by T. gondii oocysts in the aquatic environment where these animals live.

BACKGROUND: Serum biomarkers traditionally associated with inflammatory activity and a poor prognosis in rheumatic diseases do not show the same relationship in spondyloarthritis. OBJECTIVE: To establish the association between serum levels of potential biomarkers with the presence of factors related to clinical activity and poor prognosis in spondyloarthritis. METHODS: Sixty-two patients were included: 13 with reactive arthritis, 19 with ankylosing spondylitis, and 30 with undifferentiated spondyloarthritis. The results were compared with those from 46 healthy controls. Clinical, radiological, and laboratory characteristics were assessed. The results were analyzed based on the presence of uveitis, enthesitis, inflammatory back pain, arthritis, HLA-B27 and sacroiliac involvement. The analyzed biomarkers included ESR, US-CRP, SAA, LBP, FSC-M, and MMP-3; and cytokine serum levels measured were: IL-17, IL-6, IL-1α , TNF-α , IFN-γ, and IL-23. RESULTS: Forty-three (69.4%) patients were male. The average age was 31.9 ± 9.9 years and the age at the onset of symptoms was 26.9 ± 7.3 years. HLA-B27 was positive in 26 (41.9%) patients, inflammatory back pain in 42 (67.7%), arthritis in 44 (71.0%), and enthesitis in 34 (54.8%). IL-17, IL-23, TNF-α , IL-6, IL-1α , and US-CRP levels were significantly higher in patients with SpA when compared to controls. US-CRP (P = 0.04), IL-6 (P = 0.003), IL-1α (P = 0.03), and LBP (P = 0.03) levels were associated with presence of HLA-B27, inflammatory back pain, and arthritis. CONCLUSION: An increase in serum levels of US-CRP, IL-6, IL-1α , and LBP was correlated with factors associated with clinical activity and poor prognosis in spondyloarthritis.
