O automonitoramento (AM) é usado para a observação, avaliação e intervenção em problemas comportamentais e de saúde. Neste estudo, utilizou-se AM na avaliação de comportamentos de uma mulher de 44 anos de idade com a síndrome do intestino irritável (SII). Durante um período de 19 semanas a paciente preencheu formulários diários de AM de atividades diárias, sintomas intestinais e consumo alimentar. Uma melhora não programada nos sintomas foi observada, que pode ser explicada como um efeito de reatividade ao AM. Inicialmente as atividades diárias da paciente aconteciam de forma ininterrupta e eram associadas à constipação intestinal; com a ajuda de AM ela aprendeu a realizar interrupções dessas atividades quando dos sinais de motilidade intestinal, aumentando assim a frequência de evacuação.

Self-monitoring (SM) is used for observation, assessment and intervention in behavioral and health problems. In this study SM was used in the behavior assessment of a 44 year old female with an irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). During a period of 19 weeks this patient filled in daily SM forms related to general activities, bowel functioning and food intake, A not foreseen improvement of the symptoms was observed, which can be explained as a reactivity effect to SM. Initially, the activities of the participant occurred in a uninterruptedly manner and were associated with bowel constipation; with the SM recording the participant learned to interrupt her activities as response to signals of bowel movements, increasing, therefore, the frequency of defecation.

El uso de biorretroalimentación en la rehabilitación de personas con lesión medular viene en aumento, aunque no haya datos consistentes sobre el alcance de esta técnica. El objetivo es averiguar la eficacia de la técnica en la rehabilitación motora de pacientes con diferentes tipos de lesión medular. Se trata del estudio de tres casos: dos parapléjicos y un cuadripléjico con diferentes grados de deficiencia que fueron sometidos a sesiones de entrenamiento de biorretroalimentación de electromiografía. Los datos se obtuvieron en sesiones de entrenamiento con biorretroalimentación, en exámenes manuales de fuerza muscular y en las declaraciones de los participantes al final del entrenamiento. Se relacionaron los resultados de las sesiones de biorretroalimentación, los datos de las pruebas de fuerza muscular y reportes de los participantes, verificándose mejorías en todos los participantes y constatación de mejora en las tres fuentes de datos. Se concluye que la técnica de biorretroalimentación puede ser un mecanismo importante en la rehabilitación motora de pacientes con diferentes tipos de lesión.

The use of biofeedback in the spinal cord injury person rehabilitation has been increasing even though there are no data about the efficacy of such technique. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the technique in the motor rehabilitation of spinal cord injured patients with different lesions. Using case studies, three participants, two paraplegics and one quadriplegic, with different lesion levels and degrees of deficiency were exposed to electromyography biofeedback training sessions. Data were obtained from the training sessions with biofeedback, from three manual test examinations of the muscles straight and from the reports of the participants after the training process. These sources of data were compared and the results of all the three different sources showed improvement for all the participants. The study concluded that the electromyography biofeedback technique can be an important tool in the rehabilitation process of patients with this kind of lesion.

Pesquisas de laboratório com animais são tentativas para suprimir lacunas deixadas pelas metodologias utilizadas nos estudos com humanos sobre os fenômenos comportamentais que acompanham uma exposição à radiação. Neste trabalho, tratamos de estudos sobre comportamentos mantidos por diferentes tipos de contingências operantes e de variáveis radiogênicas como a dosagem de radiação. Os efeitos observados com esquemas simples de reforçamento mostram redução nas taxas de resposta. Esses efeitos são dose-dependentes e interagem com outras variáveis tais como o tipo de linha de base, taxa de respostas na linha de base e tipo de estímulo reforçador. Além disso, em esquemas concorrentes os efeitos são seletivos, segundo os componentes do esquema. Dados obtidos em procedimentos de aquisição repetida indicam uma interação da radiação com o tipo de tarefa em execução. As implicações dos estudos com animais para a compreensão das manifestações comportamentais observadas em indivíduos expostos a eventos radioativos são discutidas.

Laboratory animal research are attempts to fill some gaps left by the methodology used with humans about behavioral phenomena that follow radiation exposure. This work deals with studies about behaviors maintained by different operant contingencies and radiogenic variables such as radiation dosage. The characteristic effects observed under simple reinforcement schedules show a reduction in response rates. These effects are, however, dose-dependent and interact with other variables such as type of baseline, response rate during baseline and type of reinforcer. Furthermore, under concurrent schedules the effects are selective according to the schedule components. Data obtained with repeated acquisition procedures indicate also an interaction of radiation with the type of task involved. Implications of laboratory animal studies for the understanding of observed behavioral manifestations in individuals exposed to radioactive events are discussed.
