No estado do Rio de Janeiro, em área de Mata Atlântica, Callithrix aurita (É. Geoffroy in Humboldt, 1812) é a espécie nativa considerada vulnerável à extinção e C. jacchus (Linnaeus, 1758) e C. penicillata (É. Geoffroy, 1812) são espécies invasoras. As principais ameaças à espécie nativa são a degradação do habitat e a hibridação, embora não haja, até o momento, dados genéticos que confirmem a hibridação natural. Estudos anteriores revelaram que as espécies do gênero Callithrix são extremamente homogêneas em seus cariótipos, diferindo quanto à morfologia do cromossomo Y e padrão de marcação da região organizadora de nucléolo (NOR). No presente estudo, três saguis machos capturados na natureza no município de Guapimirim, distrito de Teresópolis, RJ, considerados como possíveis híbridos entre C. aurita e C. jacchus ou C. penicillata, com base no padrão de pelagem, foram estudados citogeneticamente. Os cromossomos metafásicos foram obtidos pela técnica de cultura de linfócitos e a coloração Ag-NOR foi realizada. Os cariótipos dos híbridos, 2n=46, continham 14 autossomos com um braço e 30 com dois braços, um cromossomo X de tamanho médio submetacêntrico e marcação NOR nos autossomos, sendo compatíveis com aquele observado para o gênero. Nos três casos, o cromossomo Y foi similar ao observado em C. aurita, sem marcação NOR. Os dados obtidos sugerem a participação de C. aurita em hibridação natural com as espécies invasoras e suas prováveis consequências são discutidas.

In the Atlantic forest of Rio de Janeiro, Callithrix aurita (É. Geoffroy in Humboldt, 1812) is a native species vulnerable to extinction and C. jacchus (Linnaeus, 1758) and C. penicillata (É. Geoffroy, 1812) are invasive species. The major threats to the native species are habitat degradation and hybridization, although there are currently no genetic data about natural hybrids available. Previous studies have revealed that species of the Callithrix genus are extremely homogeneous in their karyotypes with the exceptions of the morphology and size of the Y chromosome and its nucleolar organizer region (NOR) banding pattern. Three male marmosets captured in the wild in Guapimirim municipality, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, considered as possible hybrids between C. aurita and C. jacchus or C. penicillata on the basis of pelage pattern, were cytogenetically studied. Metaphase chromosomes were obtained by using short-term lymphocyte cultures and Ag-NOR staining was performed. The hybrids karyotypes were 2n=46, 14 uni- and 30 bi-armed autosomes, a median size submetacentric X and NOR bearing autosomes, being compatible with that observed for the genus. In the three individuals studied, Y chromosomes were similar to those found for C. aurita, without NORs. The data obtained suggest the involvement of C. aurita in natural hybridization with one of the invasive species. We discuss the possible consequences of this hybridization.

OBJECTIVES: Chlamydia trachomatis infections, in the context of extreme poverty, may trigger trachoma. Because the levels of C. trachomatis eye infections in Mexico are unknown, this study sought to determine if C. trachomatis was present in the conjunctiva of children living in three poor, rural areas of the country. METHODS: Clinical diagnosis of conjunctival follicles in children was conducted during the 2004 visual acuity assessment campaigns in rural areas of the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Zacatecas. C. trachomatis detection was carried out by sampling the children with follicles and examining the specimens after Giemsa or microimmunofluorescence (MIF) staining. RESULTS: A total of 941 children from 6 to 12 years of age were examined in 2004. Of the 484 in Chiapas, 30% were found to have follicles; of the 181 in Zacatecas, 22%; and of the 276 in Oaxaca, 42%. C. trachomatis was detected at levels ranging between 2% and 5%; positive by Giemsa in 4.5% of the children with follicles, and by MIF in 15.5%. CONCLUSIONS: Considering that the chlamydiae sampling procedures and detection methods used in this study were not the most sensitive, the results underestimate the chlamydial eye infections and represent a conservative assessment of a potential risk for preventable visual impairment. Because C. trachomatis was detected here at levels similar to those reported for low-endemic trachoma areas, health authorities should be prepared to implement appropriate measures should it be confirmed that the visual health of Mexico’s children is at risk.

OBJETIVOS: En un contexto de pobreza extrema, la infección por Chlamydia trachomatis puede desencadenar el tracoma. Debido a que se desconocen los niveles de infección ocular con C. trachomatis en México, el objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la presencia de C. trachomatis en la conjuntiva de niños de tres zonas rurales pobres de México. MÉTODOS:El diagnóstico clínico de folículos conjuntivales en los niños se llevó a cabo durante la campaña de evaluación de la agudeza visual en áreas rurales de los estados de Chiapas, Oaxaca y Zacatecas en 2004. Para la detección de C. trachomatis se tomaron muestras de los niños con folículos y se analizaron mediante la tinción de Giemsa o microinmunofluorescencia (MIF). RESULTADOS: En total se examinaron 941 niños de 6 a 12 años de edad en 2004. Se observaron folículos en 30% de los 484 niños de Chiapas, en 22% de los 181 de Zacatecas y en 42% de los 276 niños de Oaxaca. Se detectó C. trachomatis en niveles entre 2% y 5%; de los niños con folículos, 4,5% resultaron positivos por Giemsa y 15,5% por MIF. CONCLUSIONES: Estos resultados subestiman el nivel de infección ocular por clamidia, ya que los procedimientos de muestreo y los métodos de detección de clamidia empleados en este estudio no eran los más sensibles, por lo que representan una valoración conservadora del riesgo de trastornos visuales prevenibles. Como los niveles de C. trachomatis encontrados son similares a los informados para áreas de baja endemia de tracoma, las autoridades de salud deben estar listas para implementar medidas apropiadas si se confirmaran los riesgos para la salud visual de los niños mexicanos.

We used conventional chromosomal staining to describe the karyotype of the critically endangered Lear's macaw, Anodorhynchus leari Bonaparte 1856. A diploid number of 2n = 70 and a karyotype similar to that of its congener Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus suggests that chromosomal rearrangements were not the main evolutionary mechanism in the genus.

Neotropical parrots are among the most threatened groups of birds in the world, and many species are facing extinction in a near future. At the same time, the taxonomic position of many species remains unclear. Karyotype analysis has been used to elucidate the phylogenetic status of many bird groups, also providing important information for both in situ and ex situ conservation plans. The objective of the present study was to describe for the first time the karyotypes of the endangered Hyacinth Macaw, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus, and of the Hawk-headed Parrot, Deroptyus accipitrinus. A diploid number of 2n = 70 and a karyotype similar to the main pattern previously found for the genera Ara, Cyanopsitta, Aratinga, Propyrrhura, Pionites, Pionopsitta, Nandayus, and Guaruba were found for both species. These karyotype descriptions can be a starting point for the genetic monitoring of these two declining species.

Foram estudados citogeneticamente vinte exemplares da espécie Oryzoborus maximiliani provenientes de criatórios do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Foi aplicada a técnica de cultura de curta duração de polpa de penas jovens, permitindo a investigação nas aves vivas. O cariótipo da espécie foi estabelecido (2n = 72) com identificação do par sexual. Considerações evolutivas são abordadas.

The investigation of the karyotype of Oryzoborus maximiliani in living birds utilizing young feather pulp culture is described. The species karyotype was established as 2n = 72 with unequivocal identification of the sexual chromosome pair. Evolutionary considerations are raised.

Foram estudados pela primeira vez os cariótipos de duas espécies do gênero Aratinga, A. guarouba e A. acuticaudata. As metáfases foram obtidas utilizando-se o método de cultura de curta duração de polpa de penas jovens. Estes cariótipos foram comparados com outros do mesmo gênero. Interpretações cariológicas na ordem Psittaciformes são discutidas.

The karyotypes of two species of Psittacidae of the genus Aratinga, Aratinga guarouba and A. acuticaudata were studied for the first time. The metaphases were obtained using a short term culture of feather pulp. These karyotypes are compared with others of the genus and their karyological relationships in the Psittaciformes are discussed
