Resumo Um total de 132 espécimes de linguados (60 Paralichthys isosceles, 36 Paralichthys patagonicus e 36 Xystreurys rasile) foram coletados na costa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Os peixes foram medidos, necropsiados e tiveram seus órgãos investigados para o encontro de trematodeos digenéticos, das famílias Hemiuridae e Lecithasteridae, e nematoides das famílias Camallanidae e Cucullanidae. A identificação taxonômica dos parasitos foi baseada nos caracteres morfológicos e morfométricos, usando-se as microscopias de campo claro e eletrônica de varredura. Os trematódeos, Lecithochirium monticellii e Aponurus laguncula, foram encontrados parasitando P. isosceles, P. patagonicus e X. rasile, enquanto os nematoides, Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) halitrophus e Cucullanus bonaerensis, foram encontrados parasitando P. isosceles e X. rasile e P. isosceles, P. patagonicus e X. rasile, respectivamente. Os índices parasitários de prevalência, intensidade média, abundância média e amplitude de variação da intensidade de infeção, bem como os sítios de infecção foram avaliados para cada espécie de parasito. Este é o primeiro registro de P. patagonicus por L. monticellii; X. rasile por A. laguncula e P. (S.) halitrophus; e de P. isosceles e P. patagonicus por C. bonaerensis no Oceano Atlântico Sul Ocidental.

Abstract A total of 132 flounder specimens (60 Paralichthys isosceles, 36 Paralichthys patagonicus and 36 Xystreurys rasile) were collected off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fish were measured, necropsied, and had their organs investigated for hemiurid and lecithasterid digenean trematodes and camallanid and cucullanid nematodes. Taxonomic identification of the parasites was based on morphological and morphometric characters and was conducted using bright-field and scanning electron microscopies. The trematodes Lecithochirium monticellii and Aponurus laguncula were found parasitizing P. isosceles, P. patagonicus and X. rasile while the nematodes Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) halitrophus and Cucullanus bonaerensis were found parasitizing P. isosceles and X. rasile and P. isosceles, P. patagonicus and X. rasile, respectively. Parasite indices of prevalence, mean intensity, mean abundance, and range of infection, as well as infection site, were evaluated for each parasite species. This study allowed to evidence the first occurrence of P. patagonicus by L. monticellii; X. rasile by A. laguncula and P. (S.) halitrophus; and P. isosceles and P. patagonicus by C. bonaerensis in the Western South Atlantic Ocean.

Abstract Abstract: Trichiurus lepturus (Actinopterygii, Perciformes) is a commercially and economically important fish. A total of 60 specimens of this cutlassfish were collected of the coast the municipalities of Niterói and Cabo Frio, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fish were measured, necropsied, filleted and had their organs investigated for digenetic trematodes. Taxonomic identification was based on morphological and morphometric characters. The specimens of T. lepturus were parasitized with adult specimens of Lecithochirium monticellii. Parasite indices of prevalence, intensity, mean intensity, abundance, mean abundance, range of infection, and site of infection of parasitic species were evaluated. Notes on the taxonomy of the parasite were also included. This is the first report of L. monticellii parasitizing T. lepturus in Brazil.

Resumo Os linguados são peixes comercial e economicamente importantes. Um total de 120 espécimes de linguados (60 Paralichthys isosceles, 30 P. patagonicus e 30 Xystreurys rasile) foram coletados no litoral do estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Os peixes foram medidos, necropsiados, filetados e tiveram seus órgãos investigados para a presença de acantocéfalos. A identificação taxonômica foi baseada em caracteres morfológicos, morfométricos e genéticos. Paralichthys isosceles e P. patagonicus estavam parasitados por acantocéfalos juvenis de Serrasentis sagittifer, Bolbosoma turbinella, Corynosoma australe e C. cetaceum; Xystreurys rasile estava parasitado com C. australe. A caracterização genética confirmou a identificação dos espécimes de Bolbosoma turbinella e Corynosoma australe, como demonstrado por análises filogenéticas usando ambos marcadores moleculares ITS e cox1. Foram analisados os índices parasitários: prevalência, intensidade, intensidade média, abundância, abundância média, amplitude de variação da infecção e sítio de infecção de cada espécie de parasito. Este é o primeiro registro de S. sagittifer parasitando P. isosceles e P. patagonicus, e de B. turbinella parasitando P. patagonicus.

Abstract Flounders are commercially and economically important fish. A total of 120 specimens of flounders (60 Paralichthys isosceles, 30 Paralichthys patagonicus and 30 Xystreurys rasile) were collected off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The fish were measured, necropsied and filleted, and then had their organs investigated for acanthocephalans. Taxonomic identification of the parasites was based on morphological, morphometric and genetic characters. Paralichthys isosceles and P. patagonicus were parasitized by juveniles of Serrasentis sagittifer, Bolbosoma turbinella, Corynosoma australe and C. cetaceum; Xystreurys rasile was parasitized by C. australe. Genetic characterization confirmed the identification of specimens of Bolbosoma turbinella and Corynosoma australe, as demonstrated by phylogenetic analyses using both ITS and cox1 molecular targets. Parasite indices of prevalence, intensity, mean intensity, abundance, mean abundance, and range of infection, as well as infection site, were evaluated for each parasite species. This is the first report of S. sagittifer parasitizing P. isosceles and P. patagonicus, and B. turbinella parasitizing P. patagonicus.

Resumo Atractis thapari Petter, 1966, um nematoide atractídeo, foi coletado parasitando o intestino grosso de jabutis, Chelonoidis carbonarius (Spix, 1824) (Cc) e C. denticulatus (Linnaeus, 1766) (Cd) no Parque Zoobotânico, município de Teresina, estado do Piauí, Brasil. A identificação taxonômica foi baseada nos caracteres morfológicos e morfométricos usando microscopias de campo claro e eletrônica de varredura. O presente estudo adiciona novas observações na morfologia, principalmente relacionadas as papilas bucais, poro excretor, deirídeos, e extremidade posterior de machos e fêmeas. Os índices parasitários de prevalência (P), intensidade média (IM), abundância média (AM) e amplitude de variação de infecção (AI) de A. thapari em ambos jabutis foram P = 100%, IM = 154.667, AM = 154.667, AI = 5.500-588.500 (Cc); P = 100%, I M= 93.639, AM = 93.639, AI = 1.000-224.500 (Cd). Este registro confirma a ocorrência de A. thapari na região Neotropical, América do Sul, Brasil, e expande a um novo hospedeiro, o jabuti C. carbonarius. É sugerido um ajuste no manejo dos hospedeiros objetivando melhora das suas condições higiênico sanitárias.

Abstract Atractis thapari Petter, 1966, an atractid nematode, was collected parasitizing the large intestine of tortoises of the species Chelonoidis carbonarius (Spix, 1824) (Cc) and C. denticulatus (Linnaeus, 1766) (Cd) (Testudinidae) in the Zoobotanical Park of the municipality of Teresina, state of Piauí, Brazil. Taxonomic identification was based on morphological and morphometrical features, and using bright-field and scanning electron microscopy. The present study adds new observations on the morphology of A. thapari, mainly relating to mouth papillae, the excretory pore, deirids, and male and female posterior ends. The parasitic indices of prevalence (P), mean intensity (MI), mean abundance (MA) and range of infection (RI) for A. thapari in these two tortoise species were: P = 100%, MI = 154,667, MA = 154,667, RI = 5,500-588,500 (Cc); P = 100%, MI = 93,639, MA = 93,639, RI = 1,000-224,500 (Cd). This report confirms the occurrence of A. thapari in Neotropical region, South America, Brazil, and extends its occurrences to a new host, the tortoise C. carbonarius. Adjustment of host management with the aim of improving hygiene and health conditions is suggested.

Resumo Chapiniella variabilis (Chapin, 1924), um nematoide estrongilídeo, foi coletado parasitando o intestino grosso de jabutis, Chelonoidis carbonarius (Spix, 1824) e C. denticulatus (Linnaeus, 1766) do Parque Zoobotânico, município de Teresina, estado do Piauí, Brasil. A identificação taxonômica foi baseada nos caracteres morfológicos e morfométricos usando microscopias de campo claro e eletrônica de varredura. O presente estudo adiciona novas observações na morfologia, principalmente relacionadas as papilas bucais, elementos externos e internos da coroa-foliar, poro excretor, deirídeos, e extremidade posterior de machos e fêmeas. Os índices parasitários de prevalência (P), intensidade média (IM), abundância média (AM) e amplitude de variação de infecção (AI) de C. variabilis em ambos jabutis foram P = 100%, IM = 833,3, AM = 833,3, AI = 500-1.500 (Cc); P = 100%, IM = 472,2, AM = 472,2, AI = 333-500 (Cd). Este registro aumenta a ocorrência de C. variabilis a um novo hospedeiro, C. carbonarius, e a um outro estado do Brasil, na região Neotropical da América do Sul. É sugerido um ajuste no manejo dos hospedeiros objetivando melhora das suas condições higiênico sanitárias.

Entre julho e dezembro de 2013, foram adquiridos 30 espécimes de Priacanthus arenatus comercializados nos municípios de Niterói e Rio de Janeiro, no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Os peixes foram necropsiados e filetados para investigação da presença de larvas de nematoides. Do total, 20 (66,7%) peixes estavam parasitados com larvas de nematoides. Foram coletadas no total 2024 larvas, das quais, 30 larvas de terceiro estágio de Anisakis sp. com prevalência (P) = 20%, abundância média (AM) = 1 e intensidade média (IM) = 5, tendo como sítios de in fecção (SI) ceco, estômago, fígado e mesentério; e 1994 larvas de terceiro estágio (1757 encistadas e 237 livres) de Hysterothylacium deardorffoverstreetorum com P = 66,7%, AM = 66,5 e IM = 99,7e SI = baço, ceco, estô mago, fígado, mesentério e musculatura abdominal. Este é o primeiro registro de larvas de H. deardorffoverstree torum e Anisakis sp. parasitando P. arenatus.

From July to December, 2013, thirty Priacanthus arenatus specimens commercialized in the cities of Niterói and Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, were acquired. The fish were necropsied and filleted to investigate the presence of nematode larvae. Twenty fish (66.7%) out of the total were parasitized by nematode larvae. A total of 2024 larvae were collected; among them, 30 third-instar larvae of Anisakis sp. showed prevalence (P) = 20%, mean abundance (MA) = 1, and the mean intensity (MI) = 5, and infection sites (IS) = caecum, stomach, liver, and mesentery; and 1,994 third-instar larvae (1,757 encysted and 237 free) of Hysterothylacium deardorffoverstreetorum with P = 66.7%, MA = 66.5, and MI = 99.7, and IS = spleen, caecum, stomach, liver, mesentery, and abdominal muscle. This is the first study to report H. deardorffoverstreetorum and Anisakis sp. larvae parasitizing P. arenatus.

Espécies de peixes da Ilha de Marajó, Estado do Pará, Brasil, foram examinadas para identificar os trematódeos parasitando 102 Hoplerytrinus unitaeniatus (jejú) e 104 Hoplias malabaricus (traíra). Identificados como Clinostomatopsis sorbens e Ithyoclinostomum dimorphum. Os índices parasitários de C. sorbens de H. unitaeniatus e H. malabaricus, foram 43,14% e 30,77% de prevalência, 2,52 e 1,84 de intensidade média, 1,09 e 0,57 de abundância média e 1 a 9 e 1 a 7 de variação da amplitude de infecção, respectivamente, em ambos o sítio de infecção foi o mesentério. Os índices parasitários de I. dimorphum de H. unitaeniatus foram 2,94% de prevalência, 2,66 de intensidade média, 0,08 de abundância média, 1 a 4 de variação da amplitude de infecção, e os sítios de infecção foram o mesentério e a musculatura. Metacercárias de I. dimorphum foram coletadas na musculatura de um espécime de H. malabaricus, com 0,96% de prevalência, com intensidade de infecção de 2 parasitos e 0,02 de abundância. São apresentadas novos dados sobre a morfologia das estruturas externas e internas. Este é o primeiro registro de metacercárias de C. sorbens e de I. dimorphum em peixes amazônicos.

Species of fish of Marajó Island, State of Pará, Brazil, were examined to identify the trematodes parasitizing 102 Hoplerytrinus unitaeniatus (gold wolf fish) and 104 Hoplias malabaricus (thraira). Metacercariae of two species of trematodes, 170 specimens of Clinostomatopsis sorbens and 10 Ithyoclinostomum dimorphum were found and identified. The parasitary indices of C. sorbens from H. unitaeniatus and H. malabaricus, were 43.14% and 30.77% for prevalence, 2.52 and 1.84 for mean intensity, 1.09 and 0.57 for mean abundance and 1 to 9 and 1 to 7 for range of infection, respectively, on both fish the site of infection was the mesentery. The parasitary indices of I. dimorphum from H. unitaeniatus were 2.94% for prevalence, 2.66 for mean intensity, 0.08 for mean abundance, 1 to 4 for range of infection, and the sites of infection were the mesentery and the muscle. Metacercariae of I. dimorphum were collected in muscles of a specimen of H. malabaricus, with 0.96% of prevalence, intensity of infection of 2 parasites and 0.02 of abundance. New morphological data of external and internal structures are presented. This is the first record of metacercariae of C. sorbens and I. dimorphum in Amazonian fish.

The present investigation is related to the frequency of infection and to the gross and microscopic lesions associated to the presence of trichurid worms in 50 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) from backyard flocks in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the investigated birds, the overall infection rate was of 74%, with the presence of Eucoleus perforans with 72% of prevalence and 21.2 of mean intensity, in the esophageal and crop mucosa and rarely in the junction of the proventriculus and esophagus, E. annulatus with 2% and 3 in the crop mucosa, Capillaria phasianina, with 12% and 4.3 in the cecum and small intestine and Baruscapillaria obsignata, for the first time referred in this host, with 2% and 1 in the small intestine. Clinical signs were absent. The gross lesions observed in the crop and esophagus of 14 (38.9%) pheasants parasitized with E. perforans were thickening, small nodules, congestion, and petechial haemorrhages in the mucosa. These birds presented a mean infection of 37.5 and a range of infection of 10-82. The microscopic lesions revealed chronic esophagitis with diffuse inflammatory process in the lamina propria characterized mostly by a mononuclear cell infiltrate and also with the presence of granulocytes. In the case of the parasitism of pheasants with C. phasianina, the gross lesions were absent; microscopic lesions were characterized by chronic typhlitis with mononuclear infiltrate. Gross and microscopic lesions were absent in the pheasants parasitized with E. annulatus and B. obsignata.

Worm burdens were evaluated and compared in two groups of the guinea pig, Cavia poreellus (Linnaeus, 1758): animals of the first group were conventionally maintained in an institutional animal house and those of the second group were openly kept in pet shops in Brazil. Animals from both sources were infected only with the nematode Paraspidodera uncinata (Rudolphi, 1819) Travassos, 1914 (10% of prevalence in guinea pigs from lhe institutional facility and 40% in those animals from the pet shop). Other helminth samples recovered from Brazilian guinea pigs during 52 years and that are deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CHIOC) were also analyzed. Paraspidodera uncinata and the cestode Monoecocestus parcitesticulatus Rêgo, 1960 were identified in these samples.

Twenty-nine specimes (32.2%) of elasmobranch fishes, out of 90 captured in the south coast of Brazil in the States of Paraná and Santa Catarina, represented by six families, seven genera and nine species, were parasitized with cestodes of the order Trypanorhyncha: Heptranchias perlo and Squalus sp. parasitized with Progrillotia dollfusi; Isurus oxyrinchus with Nybelinia lingualis and Gymnorhynchus isuri; Prionace glauca with Tentacularia coryphaenae, Hepatoxylon trichiuri, Molicola horridus, Floriceps saccatus and Callitetrarhynchus gracilis; Carcharhinus signatus with Heteronybelinia yamagutii, H. nipponica and P. dollfusi; C. longimanus and C. obscurus with T. coryphaenae; Sphyrna zygaena with Heteronybelinia rougetcampanae and Callitetrarhynchus speciosus; Dipturus trachydermus with Mixonybelinia beveridgei. Prevalences and intensities of infection are presented as well as the analysis of the hosts sex-related parasitism, in single or concomitant infections. Data are discussed and compared with previous available reports on these hosts, mainly those referring to the species I. oxyrinchus, P. glauca and C. longimanus
