ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to describe the constant drying flux stage, as well as obtaining the critical moisture content during the convective drying of jambu leaf paste crushed under different conditions and characterizing the physical properties of the material after drying. Drying was carried out in an air circulation oven at a speed of 1.0 m s-1 and temperatures of 60, 70 and 80 ºC and layer thicknesses of 0.005 and 0.01 m. To determine the constant rate stage, the mass fluxes and the drying rate were calculated. Segmented polynomials were used to estimate the critical moisture content. Under the analyzed conditions, a typical drying behavior was found, demonstrating the existence of a significant period of constant drying rate for the mass of ground jambu leaves. Critical moisture content as a function of thickness and temperature did not show a trend. The material showed favorable physical characteristics, such as high solubility and cohesiveness, free flow, and good wettability, characteristics that add value to the raw material and for the availability of a new product to the market in the condition of packaging.

RESUMO Neste estudo objetivou-se descrever o estágio de fluxo de secagem constante, bem como obter o teor de água crítico durante a secagem convectiva da pasta de folhas de jambu trituradas em diferentes condições e caracterizar as propriedades físicas do material após a secagem. A secagem foi realizada em estufa de circulação de ar com velocidade de 1,0 m s-1 nas temperaturas de 60, 70 e 80 ºC e espessuras da camada de 0,005 e 0,01 m. Para a determinação do estágio de taxa constante, foram calculados os fluxos de massa e a taxa de secagem. Os polinômios segmentados foram utilizados para estimar o teor de água crítico. Nas condições analisadas houve um comportamento típico de secagem, demonstrando a existência de um expressivo período de taxa constante de secagem para a pasta de folhas de jambu trituradas. Os teores de água críticos em função da espessura e temperatura não apresentaram uma tendência. O material apresentou características físicas favoráveis, como alta solubilidade e coesividade, escoamento livre e boa molhabilidade, características que agregam valor à matéria-prima e para a disponibilização de um novo produto ao mercado em condição de acondicionamento.

ABSTRACT Aiming at the search for a new alternative for the sustainability of the properties in the irrigated areas of the Brazilian Northeast, the objective of this study was to identify the ideal irrigation system and depth for a better yield and quality of pear fruits in the Sub-middle São Francisco region. The experiment was conducted in the commercial orchard of the Frutos do Sol farm, located in the municipality of Petrolina, PE, Brazil, from October 2016 to November 2017. The treatments consisted of four irrigation depths (60; 80; 100 and 120% of crop evapotranspiration - ETc), under two irrigation systems (drip and micro-sprinkler), in two crop cycles of ‘Triunfo’ pear. Yield, average fruit weight, water productivity, pulp firmness and titratable acidity, total soluble solids and lightness of the fruits were analyzed. Irrigation depths of 96.04% and 94.84% ETc promote, respectively, the highest marketable yields for the first (43.48 t ha-1) and second (26.55 t ha-1) cycle of ‘Triunfo’ pear in the Brazilian semi-arid region. Drip irrigation system in the warmer period promotes higher yield. The cultivation of ‘Triunfo’ pear irrigated by drip and micro-sprinkler promotes fruits with good commercial quality in the Brazilian semi-arid region.

RESUMO Visando a busca de uma nova alternativa para sustentabilidade das propriedades dos polos irrigados do Nordeste brasileiro, objetivou-se com este estudo identificar o sistema e a lâmina de irrigação ideal para uma melhor produtividade e qualidade dos frutos da pereira, no Submédio São Francisco. O experimento foi conduzido no pomar comercial da fazenda Frutos do Sol, localizado no município de Petrolina - PE, no período de outubro de 2016 a novembro de 2017. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de quatro lâminas de irrigação (60; 80; 100 e 120% da evapotranspiração da cultura - ETc), sob dois sistemas de irrigação (gotejamento e microaspersão), em dois ciclos de cultivos da pereira ‘Triunfo’. Analisou-se a produtividade, peso médio dos frutos, produtividade de água, bem como a firmeza de polpa e a acidez titulável, sólidos solúveis totais e luminosidade dos frutos. As lâminas de irrigação de 96,04% e 94,84% da ETc proporcionam, respectivamente, as maiores produtividades comerciais para o primeiro (43,48 t ha-1) e segundo (26,55 t ha-1) ciclo de cultivo da pereira ‘Triunfo’ no Semiárido brasileiro. O sistema de irrigação por gotejamento no período mais quente proporciona maior produtividade. O cultivo da pereira ‘Triunfo’ irrigada por gotejamento e microaspersão proporcionam frutos com boa qualidade comercial no Semiárido brasileiro.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of irrigation systems and water depths on physiological, biochemical and production processes of pear trees grown in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with 2 × 4 factorial scheme, corresponding to two irrigation systems (drip and microsprinkler) and four irrigation depths (60, 80, 100 and 120% of the crop evapotranspiration - ETc), with four replicates. Water deficit and excess applied to plants are harmful to gas exchange as well as to biosynthesis and accumulation of carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins in leaves, compromising the cultivation cycle of pear plants grown in the Sub-Middle São Francisco region. The irrigation depth of 91.8% ETc promotes the highest production of pear (18.49 kg plant-1) under drip and microsprinkler irrigation systems, under the edaphoclimatic conditions of the Sub-Middle São Francisco region.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência de sistemas de irrigação e lâminas de irrigação sobre processos fisiológicos, bioquímicos e produtivos da pereira cultivada no Semiárido brasileiro. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com fatorial 2 x 4, sendo dois sistemas de irrigação (gotejamento e microaspersão) e quatro lâminas de irrigação (60; 80; 100 e 120% da evapotranspiração da cultura - ETc), com quatro repetições. A deficiência e o excesso hídrico aplicados às plantas são prejudiciais às trocas gasosas, bem como à biossíntese e acúmulo de carboidratos, aminoácidos e proteínas nas folhas, comprometendo o ciclo de cultivo de pereiras cultivadas na região do Submédio São Francisco. A lâmina de irrigação de 91,8% ETc promove a maior produção de pereira (18,49 kg planta-1) sob sistemas de irrigação por gotejamento e microaspersão, nas condições edafoclimáticas do Submédio São Francisco.

Abstract: Image analysis techniques are expanding in agriculture and, for being fast, simple, and not destroying samples, they are interesting alternatives in the detection of immature rice seeds. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of rice seeds using X-ray, multispectral and chlorophyll fluorescence image analysis techniques. Initially, with the seeds identified and numbered, radiographic images were obtained to determine the free space (area between the endosperm + embryo and the glumes). Subsequently, with the same seeds used in the X-ray, multispectral and chlorophyll fluorescence images were acquired, and then the computerized seedling analysis was performed with the SVIS® software. It was concluded that rice seeds that do not germinate or originate abnormal seedlings have free space equal to or greater than 18.68%, higher reflectance in the spectral bands with wavelength from 590 nm to 780 nm (41.46% to 64.21%, respectively) and in the band of 970 nm (75.65%), in addition to having chlorophyll fluorescence values equal to or greater than 40.58 and 112.92 at excitation/emission energies of 630/700 nm and 645/700 nm, respectively.

Resumo: As técnicas de análise de imagens apresentam-se em expansão na agricultura e por consistirem em avaliações rápidas, simples e não destrutivas, são alternativas interessantes para a detecção de sementes de arroz imaturas. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade de sementes de arroz utilizando as técnicas de análise de imagens de raios X, multiespectrais e de fluorescência de clorofila. Inicialmente, com as sementes identificadas e enumeradas, foram obtidas imagens radiográficas para a obtenção do espaço vazio (área entre o endosperma + embrião e as glumelas). Posteriormente, com as mesmas sementes utilizadas na análise de raios X, procedeu-se a aquisição das imagens multiespectrais e de fluorescência de clorofila. Na sequência, realizou-se a análise computadorizada de plântulas com o software SVIS ®. Concluiu-se que as sementes de arroz que não germinam ou originam plântulas anormais apresentam espaço vazio interno igual ou superior a 18,68%, maior reflectância nas bandas espectrais de comprimento de onda de 590 nm a 780 nm (41,46% a 64,21%, respectivamente) e na banda de 970 nm (75,65%), além de apresentarem valores de fluorescência de clorofila iguais ou superiores a 40,58 e a 112,92, respectivamente nas energias de excitação/emissão de 630/700 nm e de 645/700 nm.

ABSTRACT The use of brackish water causes chemical changes in cultivated soils. It is therefore necessary to apply strategies that can minimize its negative impacts, such as the use of organic fertilizers. This study aimed to evaluate in the field the chemical attributes of a Red Yellow Argisol under irrigation with saline water and organic fertilizing in an area cultivated with corn. The design was randomized blocks, in a split-plot scheme, with the plots comprising salinity levels for the irrigation water (0.8 and 3.0 dS m-1) and the subplots combinations of organic fertilizers (cattle manure + poultry biofertilizer + goat biofertilizer; cattle manure + goat biofertilizer; cattle manure + poultry biofertilizer; control), with four replications. The 3.0 dS m-1 irrigation has a negative effect on the soil chemical attributes, particularly reducing the pH and increasing the sodium, exchangeable sodium percentage and electrical conductivity of the soil saturation extract. The combination of cattle manure + poultry biofertilizer + goat biofertilizer mitigates the salt stress by favouring the accumulation of nitrogen and organic matter, while the cattle manure + poultry biofertilizer favours the potassium accumulation in the soil. The combination of cattle manure + poultry biofertilizer + goat biofertilizer increases the contents of phosphorus and potassium when using the 0.8 dS m-1 irrigation.

RESUMO O uso de água salobra provoca alterações químicas em solos cultivados. Nesse sentido, é necessário aplicar estratégias que possam minimizar os seus impactos negativos, como, por exemplo, o uso de fertilizantes orgânicos. Objetivou-se avaliar em campo os atributos químicos de um Argissolo Vermelho Amarelo sob irrigação com água salina e adubação orgânica, em área cultivada com milho. O delineamento foi o de blocos ao acaso, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, sendo as parcelas níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,8 e 3,0 dS m-1) e as subparcelas combinações de aplicação de fontes de adubos orgânicos (esterco bovino + biofertilizante de aves + biofertilizante caprino; esterco bovino + biofertilizante caprino; esterco bovino + biofertilizante de aves; controle), com quatro repetições. A irrigação de 3,0 dS m-1 altera negativamente os atributos químicos do solo, especialmente com redução do pH e elevação de sódio, percentagem de sódio trocável e condutividade elétrica do extrato de saturação do solo. A combinação de esterco bovino + biofertilizante de aves + biofertilizante caprino mitiga o estresse salino, favorecendo o acúmulo de nitrogênio e matéria orgânica, enquanto o esterco bovino + biofertilizante de aves favorece o acúmulo de potássio no solo. A combinação de esterco bovino + biofertilizante de aves + biofertilizante caprino aumenta o conteúdo de fósforo e de potássio quando utilizada a irrigação de 0,8 dS m-1.

Food additives are chemical substances added to improve organoleptic characteristics, in this context, there are several synthetic dyes, such as sunset yellow, tartrazine, erioglaucine, allura red, indigo carmine, and new coccine, that can also be identified through different analytical techniques such as infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector and mass spectrometry. Therefore, the objective of this work was to compare methods developed for different analytical techniques, in order to identify the one that presents greater efficiency in certain applications. For this, the patterns of the dyes were analyzed, as well as their mixtures and foods that had them. As a result, the CLAE-DAD presents excellent selectivity and linearity of the calibration curves, but it presents higher LD and LQ values when compared to the UV-Vis, in turn the infrared provides information regarding functional groups and bonds. Mass spectrometry showed great capabilities in identifying the molecular formula and better selectivity in the absence of the erioglaucine dye. It is not feasible to indicate the best or worst analytical approach, but it is possible to point out which one is more suitable for each application. Regarding the quantification capacity, chromatography and UV-Vis are good alternatives, but in mixtures containing more than one dye, CLAE-DAD is more suitable due to the better selectivity. Regarding the identification capacity, mass spectrometry, especially FT-ICR MS, is the most appropriate technique to propose molecular formulas due to its high resolution and mass accuracy. The advantage of FTIR was the easier sample preparation, being able to analyze the dyes in the solid state.

ABSTRACT Brazilian semi-arid tropical is responsible for the production and export of fine table grapes, but the demand for phosphate fertilizers and other agricultural inputs increases the cost of production and threatens local water bodies by leaching of phosphorus (P). The objectives of this study were to quantify the organic and inorganic fractions of P and to determine chemical and microbiological attributes related to its mineralization in soils cultivated with vines in São Francisco Valley. It was hypothesized that P fractions and microbial activity would increase in areas fertilized with phosphate. Soil samples from vines were collected in cultivated areas and in fallow systems. P fractionation, macro-elements analysis, microbial biomass phosphorus (Pmic), and phosphatase enzyme activity were determined and correlated with each other and with the total proportion of synthesized glomalin. In both treatments, the inorganic P fractions exceeded the organic ones, and the total phosphorus available in those soils was associated with the most recalcitrant fractions, reducing risks of leaching of this element and contamination of water bodies. Pmic was higher in the winery areas due to the presence of phosphate fertilizers and organic matter, hence the activity of alkaline phosphatase enzymes and the production of total glomalin increased respectively in three and four evaluated areas, indicating that P-mineralized bacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi have been positively affected by the current agricultural system.

ABSTRACT. Since the composition of honey varies with the species of bee as well as flowering and geographical aspects, this study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical and bioactive properties of Apisand stingless bees’honey from the Brazilian Caatinga. Samples of different species of Apis mellifera L.Meliponini (Melipona subnitida, Frieseomellita varia, Melipona mandacaia, Plebeia sp.) and Apis mellifera L.werecollected from honey producersin the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Honey from A. mellifera and stingless bees showed physicochemical differences in some parameters, especially in moisture, free acidity, HMF, water activity, sugars and electric conductivity. There were no differences in color between honeys from A. mellifera and stingless bees. Honeys fromPlebeia sp., F. varia and A. mellifera showed higher antioxidant capacity followed by honeys fromM. mandacaia and M. subnitida. Flavonoids had little influence on the differentiation of antioxidant activities of stingless bees, while the opposite occurred with the phenolic content, where honeys with the highest levels of phenolic also showed higher antioxidant capacity. Resumo: A ocorrência de danos e espaço vazio no interior da semente podem afetar diretamente a germinação. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a relação entre a ocorrência de danos ou de espaço vazio no interior de sementes de feijão-caupi e o potencial fisiológico. Neste estudo foram utilizados sete lotes de sementes do cultivar BRS Guariba, que foram submetidas ao teste de raios X para identificação danos por deterioração de tecidos, danos mecânicos, danos por insetos e sementes malformadas e, posteriormente, ao teste de germinação. Na determinação dos percentuais de espaço vazio entre a área embrionária e o tegumento das sementes, foi utilizado o software ImageJ a partir de imagens radiográficas. Com base nos resultados obtidos, foi realizada a classificação das sementes em diferentes categorias, sendo os resultados confrontados com os dados de germinação. Concluiu-se que a análise de imagens radiográficas permitiu a identificação de danos e a mensuração espaço vazio na cavidade interna das sementes, possibilitando estabelecer relação entre a morfologia interna e a germinação. A presença de danos, sobretudo aqueles ocasionados por deterioração de tecidos ou danos mecânicos, a depender de sua localização e intensidade, tem potencial de afetar negativamente a germinação de sementes de feijão-caupi. Abstract: The occurrence of damage and empty space inside the seed can directly affect germination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the occurrence of damage or empty space inside cowpea seeds and the physiological potential. In this study, seven lots of seeds of the cultivar ‘BRS Guariba’ were subjected to the X-ray test to identify damage by tissue deterioration, mechanical damage, damage by insects and malformed seeds and, later, to the germination test. The percentage of empty space between the embryonic area and the seed coat was determined from radiographic images in ImageJ software. Based on the results obtained, the seeds were classified into different categories, and the results were compared with the germination data. It was concluded that the analysis of radiographic images allowed the identification of damage and measurement of empty space in the internal cavity of the seeds, making it possible to establish a relationship between internal morphology and germination. The presence of damage, especially that caused by tissue deterioration or mechanical damage, depending on its location and intensity, has the potential to negatively affect the germination of cowpea seeds. Likewise, seeds that contain higher levels of empty space in their internal cavity tend not to germinate or to generate abnormal seedlings at the time of germination. Resumo: Entre as espécies produtoras de grãos, a soja é uma das commodities mais importantes, com demanda crescente por produção nos próximos anos. A avaliação da qualidade da semente de soja é fundamental para garantir o máximo potencial de germinação e produtividade. Portanto, métodos eficazes são necessários para examinar diferentes propriedades associadas a alterações físico-químicas, fisiológicas e na sanidade das sementes que afetam a qualidade das sementes. Esta revisão enfoca os princípios fundamentais e a aplicação de técnicas de imagem radiográfica, ressonância magnética, imagem multiespectral, imagem de fluorescência de clorofila e termografia infravermelha para avaliar alterações relacionadas à perda de qualidade da semente de soja, como injúrias mecânicas, injúrias causadas por insetos, malformação embrionária e maturação incompleta. A análise computadorizada de imagens de plântulas também é apresentada para avaliação do vigor do lote de sementes. Abstract: Among grain-producing species, soybean is one of the most important commodities, with increasing demand for production in coming years. Evaluation of soybean seed quality is fundamental for ensuring maximum germination and yield potential. Therefore, effective methods are necessary for examining different properties associated with physical-chemical, physiological, and seed-health changes that affect seed quality. This review focuses on the fundamental principles and on the application of techniques of radiographic imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, multispectral imagining, chlorophyll fluorescence imaging, and infrared thermography to evaluate changes related to loss of soybean seed quality, such as mechanical injury, injury caused by insects, embryonic malformation, and incomplete maturation. Computerized seedling image analysis is also presented for evaluation of seed lot vigor. The examples presented here show the potential of these image analysis techniques for identifying different types of injuries and increasing the efficiency of in-house quality control programs in soybean seed production companies. Resumo: As sementes de manjericão (Ocimum basilicum L.) são desuniformes, decorrente do processo de florescimento e polinização característico da espécie. Diante desse cenário, surge a necessidade de se realizar pesquisas voltadas para o estabelecimento de métodos eficazes para a identificação de sementes aptas a germinar e com potencial para originar plântulas vigorosas. O presente trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar a relação entre a morfologia interna, por meio da análise de imagens radiográficas, e o desempenho germinativo de sementes de manjericão. Foram avaliadas radiografias de sementes de oito lotes do cultivar Alfavaca Basilicão. O comprimento das plântulas provenientes das sementes radiografadas foi obtido pela análise computadorizada de imagens, utilizando-se o software SVIS®, sendo os resultados comparados com as imagens radiográficas. Por meio das radiografias foi possível visualizar a morfologia interna das sementes de manjericão, bem como detectar sementes vazias, malformadas, com tecidos deteriorados e danos mecânicos. A análise de imagens radiográficas permitiu estabelecer uma relação de causa e efeito entre a integridade física dos tecidos com o desempenho germinativo das sementes, com potencial para a seleção de sementes que irão compor lotes de melhor qualidade. Abstract: Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) seeds exhibit heterogeneity due to the characteristic flowering and pollination process of this species. Consequently, the necessity for research geared toward establishing effective methodologies for identifying seeds capable of germinating and with potential for producing vigorous seedlings becomes apparent. This study was undertaken with the aim of assessing the relationship between internal morphology, as evaluated through radiographic image analysis, and the germination performance of sweet basil seeds. Radiographs of seeds from eight lots of the cultivar Alfavaca Basilicão were examined. The length of seedling originated from radiographed seeds was obtained through computerized image analysis using SVIS® software and the results were compared with the radiographic images. Radiographs allowed visualization of the internal morphology of sweet basil seeds, enabling the identification of empty seeds, malformed seeds, seeds with tissue deterioration and mechanical damage. The analysis of radiographic images substantially contributed to establishing a cause-and-effect relationship between the physical integrity of tissues and the germination performance of the seeds, underscoring the potential for selecting seeds that will contribute to enhanced lot quality. RESUMO A utilização frequente de água salina para irrigação de culturas, sob condições climáticas da região semiárida, pode afetar diretamente os processos fisiológicos das plantas. Entretanto, o manejo nutricional das plantas cultivadas pode influenciar nas respostas ao ambiente salino. Com base nisso, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a resposta da cultura do girassol a diferente condutividade elétrica da água em solo sem e com fertilizante mineral e orgânico. O experimento foi conduzido na área experimental da Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Ceará. O delineamento foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5 × 3, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram compostos por cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (CEa): 1,1; 2,1; 3,1; 4,1 e 5,1 dS m-1 e três formas de adubação aplicados ao solo (M = adubação mineral com base em NPK, B = biofertilizante caprino e CT = solo sem adubação). A salinidade da água de irrigação a partir de 2,1 dS m-1 afetou negativamente a altura das plantas, a área foliar, o diâmetro do caule e o número de folhas e aumentou a temperatura da folha. O uso da adubação mineral com NPK e orgânica com biofertilizante caprino favoreceram positivamente o crescimento em altura de plantas e o número de folhas em relação à testemunha. A adubação mineral e a orgânica atenuaram o efeito negativo da água salina na condutância estomática, transpiração e a concentração interna de CO2 e proporcionou maior taxa de assimilação de CO2.

ABSTRACT The frequent use of saline water for crop irrigation, under climatic conditions of semiarid region, can directly affect the physiological processes of plants. However, nutritional management of cultivated plants can influence responses to saline environments. Based on this, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the response of sunflower crops to different electrical conductivities of irrigation water in soil, with and without mineral and organic fertilizers. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 5 × 3 factorial arrangement, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw): 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1, and 5.1 dS m-1 and three forms of fertilization applied to the soil (M= mineral fertilizer based on NPK, B = goat biofertilizer, and CT = soil without fertilization). The salinity of irrigation water from 2.1 dS m-1 negatively affected plant height, leaf area, stem diameter, and leaf number of sunflower plants and increased leaf temperature. The use of mineral fertilization with NPK and organic goat biofertilizer positively favored growth in the height of plants and number of leaves in relation to the control. Mineral and organic fertilization attenuated the negative effect of saline water on stomatal conductance, transpiration, and the internal concentration of CO2 and provided the highest rate of CO2 assimilation.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi selecionar linhagens de algodoeiro tolerantes ao estresse hídrico, com base em caracteres de produtividade e qualidade de fibra. O experimento foi conduzido em dois experimentos de campo em Quixeramobim - CE sem suplementação hídrica, nos anos: 2018 e 2019. Foram avaliados nove genótipos de algodoeiro, sendo seis linhagens e três cultivares comerciais. Foram mensuradas variáveis relacionadas com produtividade de algodão em pluma e qualidade intrínseca de fibra. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância individual e conjunta, e a seleção pelo índice de seleção. A variabilidade genética encontrada entre os materiais demonstra a possibilidade de ganhos significativos no processo de seleção do algodoeiro. Os genótipos CNPA 2013 - 2235 RF FL, CNPA 2013 - 2064 RF FL e CNPA 2012 - 160 RF FL e a cultivar FM 944 GL tiveram maior produção e melhor qualidade de fibra em condições de sequeiro.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to select a cotton line tolerant to water stress, based on yield and fiber quality characteristics. A total of nine cotton genotypes were evaluated (six breeding lines and three commercial cultivars) in two field experiments conducted in Quixeramobim - CE without water supplementation in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Traits related to cotton lint yield and intrinsic fiber quality were measured. Data were submitted to individual and joint analysis of variance, and selection by the selection index. The genetic variability among the materials demonstrates the possibility of significant gains in the cotton selection process. The genotypes CNPA 2013 - 2235 RF FL, CNPA 2013 - 2064 RF FL and CNPA 2012 - 160 RF FL, as well as the cultivar FM 944 GL, had higher production and better fiber quality under rainfed conditions.

Resumo Os efeitos deletérios dos sais nas plantas expostas a altas radiações solares tendem a ser mais acelerados em razão do aumento de íons tóxicos na parte aérea vegetal, consequentemente, os processos fisiológicos e bioquímicos serão afetados. No entanto, esses efeitos podem ser minimizados com a utilização de estratégias de manejo, como o uso de tela de sombreamento e ambiente protegido. Nesse sentindo, objetivou-se avaliar as repostas fisiológicas da cultura da beterraba cultivada em diferentes ambientes e irrigada com águas salinas. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, fazendo uso do esquema fatorial 3 × 2, equivalente a três ambientes (PS = pleno sol; TS = telado de sombreamento aberto nas laterais e AP = ambiente protegido) e duas condutividades elétricas da água de irrigação (0,5 e 6,2 dS m-1), com quatro repetições. Aos 45 dias após a semeadura (DAS) foram analisadas as seguintes variáveis: condutância estomática, fotossíntese liquida, transpiração, concentração interna de CO2, temperatura foliar, eficiência instantânea no uso da água, eficiência da carboxilação instantânea, eficiência intrínseca do uso da água e índice relativo de clorofila. A irrigação com água de maior salinidade afetou negativamente a condutância estomática, a fotossíntese liquida, a temperatura foliar, eficiência instantânea no uso da água de plantas de beterrabas cultivadas em ambiente pleno sol. O ambiente protegido e o telado aberto nas laterais atenuou parcialmente os efeitos deletérios da salinidade.

Abstract The deleterious effects of salts on plants exposed to high solar radiation tend to be more accelerated due to the increase of toxic ions in the aerial plant part. Consequently, the physiological and biochemical processes will be affected. These effects can be minimized, however, with the use of management strategies, such as the use of a shading screen and a protected environment. In this sense, the objective of this work was to evaluate the physiological responses of sugar beet cultivated in different environments and irrigated with saline water. The experiment was conducted in an experimental design entirely randomized, using the factorial scheme 3 × 2, equivalent to three environments (FS = full sun; SSOS = shading screen open on the sides and PE = protected environment) and two electrical conductivities of the irrigation water (0.5 and 6.2 dS m-1), with four repetitions. At 45 days after sowing (DAS) the following variables were analyzed: stomatal conductance, liquid photosynthesis, transpiration, internal CO2 concentration, leaf temperature, instantaneous water use efficiency, instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, intrinsic water use efficiency, and relative chlorophyll index. Irrigation with water of higher salinity negatively affected stomatal conductance, net photosynthesis, leaf temperature and instantaneous water use efficiency of sugar beet plants grown in a full sun environment. The protected environment and open shading on the sides partially mitigated the deleterious effects of salinity.

Resumo A liberação de água do hipolímnio do reservatório, baixa concentração de oxigênio e a regulação antropogênica do fluxo do rio podem afetar a reprodução de peixes, principalmente espécies migradoras. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre os efeitos dessas mudanças nas condições da água em espécies não migradoras. A reprodução de Acestrohynchus lacustris foi avaliada em duas seções do rio São Francisco. Seção 1, localizada imediatamente a jusante da barragem de Três Marias e seção 2, localizada na confluência dos rios São Francisco e Abaeté. Para isso, foram obtidos os parâmetros físico-químicos da água de cada seção do estudo. Além disso, dados biométricos e índices biológicos de todos os peixes capturados foram obtidos. Adicionalmente, nas fêmeas foram medidos os diâmetros dos folículos vitelogênicos e a fecundidade. Temperatura, oxigênio dissolvido e fluxo apresentaram valores mais baixos na seção 1. Os peixes capturados nesta seção apresentaram menores valores de IGS em ambos os sexos, e as fêmeas apresentaram menores valores de fecundidade e diâmetro dos folículos. Essa espécie apresentou atividade reprodutiva nas duas seções analisadas, porém, na seção 1, onde os parâmetros da água apresentam piores condições para o processo reprodutivo de peixes, a capacidade reprodutiva de A. lacustris foi afetada negativamente.

Abstract The release of water from the reservoir hypolimnion, lower concentration of oxygen and the anthropogenic regulation of the river flow, could affect the reproduction of fish, especially migratory species. However, little is known about the effects of these changes in water on non-migratory species. In this sense, the reproduction of Acestrohynchus lacustris was evaluated in two sections of São Francisco River, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Section 1, located immediately downstream from Três Marias Dam (18°09’31.65”S and 45°13’36.00”W) and section 2, located at the confluence of the São Francisco and the Abaeté Rivers (18°02’47.78”S and 45°10’57.95”W). For this, we obtained the physico-chemical parameters of water of each study section. Additionally, biometric data and biological indices of all specimens were measured. Fecundity and follicles diameters were measured in females. Temperature, dissolved oxygen and flow showed lower values in section 1. Fish captured in this section, had lower values of GSI in both sexes, and females presented decreased values of fecundity and follicles diameter. This species showed reproductive activity in the two sections analyzed, however, in section 1 where the temperature and dissolved oxygen presented significant lower values, the reproductive capacity of A. lacustris, was negatively affected.
