ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to describe the constant drying flux stage, as well as obtaining the critical moisture content during the convective drying of jambu leaf paste crushed under different conditions and characterizing the physical properties of the material after drying. Drying was carried out in an air circulation oven at a speed of 1.0 m s-1 and temperatures of 60, 70 and 80 ºC and layer thicknesses of 0.005 and 0.01 m. To determine the constant rate stage, the mass fluxes and the drying rate were calculated. Segmented polynomials were used to estimate the critical moisture content. Under the analyzed conditions, a typical drying behavior was found, demonstrating the existence of a significant period of constant drying rate for the mass of ground jambu leaves. Critical moisture content as a function of thickness and temperature did not show a trend. The material showed favorable physical characteristics, such as high solubility and cohesiveness, free flow, and good wettability, characteristics that add value to the raw material and for the availability of a new product to the market in the condition of packaging.
RESUMO Neste estudo objetivou-se descrever o estágio de fluxo de secagem constante, bem como obter o teor de água crítico durante a secagem convectiva da pasta de folhas de jambu trituradas em diferentes condições e caracterizar as propriedades físicas do material após a secagem. A secagem foi realizada em estufa de circulação de ar com velocidade de 1,0 m s-1 nas temperaturas de 60, 70 e 80 ºC e espessuras da camada de 0,005 e 0,01 m. Para a determinação do estágio de taxa constante, foram calculados os fluxos de massa e a taxa de secagem. Os polinômios segmentados foram utilizados para estimar o teor de água crítico. Nas condições analisadas houve um comportamento típico de secagem, demonstrando a existência de um expressivo período de taxa constante de secagem para a pasta de folhas de jambu trituradas. Os teores de água críticos em função da espessura e temperatura não apresentaram uma tendência. O material apresentou características físicas favoráveis, como alta solubilidade e coesividade, escoamento livre e boa molhabilidade, características que agregam valor à matéria-prima e para a disponibilização de um novo produto ao mercado em condição de acondicionamento.

ABSTRACT The expression ‘you need to know to conserve’ is a well-known cliche among biologists. Documenting the richness of a group of organisms is the first step towards understanding biodiversity and preparing efficient conservation plans. In this context, many efforts have been made to quantify the number of species on Earth and estimate the number of species still unknown to science. A few countries have complete and integrated databases estimating the approximate number of species recorded for their territory, particularly in the Global South. In Brazil, a country of continental dimensions, revealing the richness of the second most diverse clade of invertebrates (=Mollusca) has been a goal of taxonomists. Recently, in an unprecedented, collective, and integrated effort among Brazilian malacologists, it was possible to estimate how many valid species of molluscs are there in Brazil. In this effort, more than 30 mollusc experts joined together to update the Taxonomic Catalogue of the Brazilian Fauna (TCBF), a governmental website that allows a quick and real-time updating of all Metazoan. So far, more than 5,000 updates have been made in TCBF, indicating the presence of 3,552 valid species of molluscs in Brazil, distributed among the main clades as follows: Caudofoveata (10 spp.), Solenogastres (6 spp.), Polyplacophora (35 spp.), Scaphopoda (43 spp.), Cephalopoda (92 spp.), Bivalvia (629 spp.) and Gastropoda (2,737 spp.). The present study, in addition to demonstrating for the first time the richness of Brazilian molluscs, also presents the state of the art of this important phylum of invertebrates highlighting its most representative and neglected groups.

Abstract The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes.

Effect of salinity on embryo-larval development of yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides (Reeve, 1854) in laboratory

Abstract Abstract: This study assessed the effect of salinity on embryonic development, larval growth and survival of the yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides in laboratory. Embryos and larvae of M. mactroides were submitted and maintained at four different salinities: 20, 25, 30 and 35 ppt, to determine optimal conditions for the species. Through descriptive analysis, the results showed that the embryos tolerate salinities between 25 - 35 ppt, presenting fast metamorphoses at salinities 30 and 35 ppt, during experimental period of 27 hours. The same tolerance pattern was observed in larval stage (25 - 35 ppt), showing a better development in salinity of 35 ppt. This result is verified in biometric analyzes of height and length of the shells and survival rate, with higher averages in treatments with salinity 35 ppt. The experimental period of this stage lasted 27 days, when the larvae were able to settle. These results indicate that embryos and larvae of M. mactroides tolerate salinities between (25-35 ppt), with the best growth and survival on high salinities being recommended to better yields in laboratory.

Abstract The yellow clam Mesodesma mactroides (Reeve, 1854) is a sand mollusc with historical and socioeconomic importance in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. A guaranteed form to access a successful reestablishment of the species in their natural environment is directly linked to their reproduction biology. Then, our report introduces the embryonic and larval development of the yellow clam reared in laboratory for such purposes. M. mactroides broodstock were selected as specimens who possess a mean total shell length and weight of 66 ± 3.82 mm and 27.15 ± 4.07 g for an afterwards spawn induction through stripping technique. Regarding the embryonic development, newly fertilized oocytes exhibited a mean diameter of 51.20 ± 6.64 μm. The first polar corpuscle, trochophores and D-veliger appeared at 20 min, 18 and 24 h after fertilization, respectively. Umbonate and pediveliger larvae were noticed on the 8th and 25th day, respectively, with complete metamorphosis occurring only at the 27th day, when all larvae were retained in a 200 μm nylon mesh. Therefore, with that basic understanding of the embryonic and larval development of M. mactroides in the laboratory, forwards studies will focus in establish a technological package for this species.

Com esta investigação teve-se por objetivo verificar se os três provadores avaliados constituem o número mínimo de provadores para assegurar a credibilidade da análise sensorial da bebida do café, “prova de chávena”. Para isso, foram realizados quatro experimentos sob diferentes condições de café no estádio cereja: A (café Catuaí Vermelho em altitudes inferiores a 900 m), B (café Catuaí Amarelo em altitudes inferiores a 900 m), C (café Catuaí Vermelho em altitudes iguais e/ou superiores a 900 m) e D (café Catuaí Amarelo em altitudes iguais e/ou superiores a 900 m), em que analisaram-se as notas atribuídas a oito características sensoriais de diferentes amostras nas condições anteriores por três provadores Q-grader que adotaram as regras internacionais da metodologia do Cup of Excellence (CoE). Com base em estatísticas descritivas aplicadas às notas que os provadores atribuíram a oito características sensoriais de diferentes amostras de cafés Catuaí Vermelho e Amarelo, no estádio cereja, provenientes de altitudes inferiores e superiores a 900 m, concluiu-se que o facto mais importante não é a quantidade de provadores envolvidos, mas sim a fiabilidade das notas por eles atribuídas, sendo fiabilidade uma medida que está diretamente associada à homogeneidade do conjunto de notas atribuídas por diferentes provadores, dada a uma mesma condição de avaliação.
This research to determine the minimum amount of testers was made to ensure the reliability of the sensory analysis of the coffee beverages. It were analyzed the scores assigned by three Q-grader who adopted the international rules from the Cup of Excellence (CoE) methodology. Based on descriptive statistics of the scores the testers assigned to eight sensorial characteristics of different samples for Red and Yellow Catuaí coffees, at the ripe coffee cherry produced in altitudes below and above 900 meters, it was concluded that the most important fact is not on the number of testers involved, but rather on the reliability of the scores they assign. Therefore, the reliability is a measure directly related to the homogeneity for the set of scores assigned by different testers, given the same condition for the evaluation.

ResumenEn los bosques tropicales secos, la dinámica de las poblaciones herbáceas están fuertemente influenciadas por la variación estacional y anual de la precipitación total. Por otra parte, los acontecimientos presentes y pasados de anomalía climática (por ejemplo, años de sequía y lluvia errática antes de la temporada de crecimiento) pueden causar reducciones drásticas de tamaño de la población, lo que lleva a la desaparición temporal de algunas especies. Por lo tanto, este estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar, durante tres años, la dinámica de Delilia biflora (Asteraceae), Commelina obliqua (Commelinaceae), Phaseolus peduncularis (Fabaceae) y Euphorbia heterophylla (Euphorbiaceae). El estudio se realizó en una zona de bosque seco tropical conocida como Caatinga, situado en la estación experimental del Instituto Agronómico de Pernambuco (IPA), en Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brasil. La Caatinga tiene un clima semiárido y fuerte variación estacional y anual de la precipitación total. Durante este estudio, hubo un evento de anomalía climática llamado la sequía de 2006 y la lluvia errática en la estación seca. El nacimiento, la muerte y la supervivencia fueron monitoreados mensualmente en 105 parcelas de 1 × 1 m. Las diferencias en densidad entre años y estaciones se evaluaron mediante la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis. El poder explicativo de la precipitación del presente y del pasado sobre la densidad se evaluó utilizando el Modelo Lineal Generalizado. En este estudio, fue el primer registro de Euphorbia heterophylla en el área de estudio. Las poblaciones estudiadas fueron mayores en los años más húmedos y durante la temporada de lluvias, y se redujeron drásticamente en el año más seco y en las estaciones secas. Commelina obliqua fue la menos sensible a la variación de la precipitación total. Con respecto a la densidad, las cuatro especies estuvieron presentes durante los tres años. Las tasas de natalidad fueron mayores durante la temporada de lluvias y las tasas de mortalidad fueron mayores en la estación seca. Lluvias esporádicas en la estación seca causado pronunciado reclutamiento de plántulas seguida de muerte y tuvo un fuerte impacto en la dinámica de D. biflora, E. heterophylla y P. peduncularis. La precipitación del año en curso explica entre el 3 % y 18 % de la variación interanual de la densidad y el poder explicativo de la precipitación del año anterior en la densidad de las poblaciones varió de 32 % a 67 %. Por lo tanto, los fenómenos climáticos del pasado también tienen una consecuencia significativa para las cuatro poblaciones. En conclusión, la drástica reducción de la precipitación total entre años podría ser un parámetro predictivo para el tamaño de la población de plantas herbáceas (en el momento presente y futuro) en una área de bosque tropical seco en el Noreste brasileño.
AbstractIn tropical dry forests, the dynamics of herbaceous populations is strongly influenced by seasonal and annual variation in total rainfall. Moreover, the present and past events of climatic anomalies (e.g. severe drought years and erratic rain before the growth season) may cause drastic reductions in population size, leading to the temporal disappearance of some species. Therefore, this three-year study aimed to assess the dynamics of Delilia biflora (Asteraceae), Commelina obliqua (Commelinaceae), Phaseolus peduncularis (Fabaceae) and Euphorbia heterophylla (Euphorbiaceae). The study was conducted in an area of tropical dry forest known as Caatinga, situated in the experimental station of the Pernambuco Agronomic Institute (IPA), in Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil. The Caatinga has a semiarid climate with strong seasonal and annual variation in total precipitation. During this study, there was a climatic anomaly event called the 2006 drought, and also erratic rains in the dry season. The birth, death and survival of plants were evaluated monthly using 105 plots (1 × 1 m). Differences in density between years and seasons were evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The explanatory power of present and past precipitation on density was evaluated using the General Linear Model. In this study, we present the first record of Euphorbiaheterophylla in the studied area. The studied populations were larger during the rainy seasons and in wet years, and were drastically reduced in the driest year and dry seasons. Commelina obliqua was the least sensitive to variation in total rainfall. Regarding the variation in density, all four species were present during all three years. Birth rates were higher during the rainy season, and death rates were higher in the dry season. Sporadic rain in the dry season caused pronounced seedling recruitment followed by death, and had a strong impact on the dynamics of D. biflora, E. heterophylla and P. peduncularis. The precipitation of the current year explained between 3 % - 18 % of the inter-annual density variation, and the explanatory power of the previous year precipitation on the density of populations ranged from 32 % to 67 %. Therefore, climatic events of the past also have a significant consequence over the four populations. In conclusion, drastic reduction in total precipitation between years may be considered as a predictive parameter for herbaceous plants population size (in the present and future time) in a Northeastern Brazilian tropical dry forest area. Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

A sulfated polysaccharide (SPSG) was successfully isolated from seagrass Halodule wrightii Asch., Cymodoceaceae, and its antioxidant and anticoagulant activities were investigated. The data presented here showed that the SPSG is a 11 kDa sulfated heterogalactan with a sulfatation degree of 20.63% and it also contains glucose and xylose. SPSG antioxidant activities were evaluated using several in vitro assays and the anticoagulant activity was evaluated by aPTT and PT tests. These assays suggested that the SPSG possessed remarkable antioxidant properties in different in vitro assays and an outstanding anticoagulant activity 2.5-fold higher than that of heparin Clexane® in the aPTT test. This data represents the first reported on the sulfated polysaccharide biological activities from seagrass. These results indicate that SPSG can be considered in the future as a drug utilized in treating diseases from these systems.

Cancer constitutes the second main mortality cause in the world, after cardiovascular diseases. In spite of the progresses in the chemotherapeutics treatments, many patients fail chemotherapy, mainly because of side effects or multi-drugs resistance, proving the need and importance of the research for new molecules with anticancer activity, more effective and with smaller adverse effects. Various compounds derived from plant secondary metabolites are commonly used in the chemotherapy against cancer and the natural products play an important role in the research for new molecules. Among several molecules of natural origin evaluated by MTT assay in murine tumor cell lines [breast (LM3) and lung (LP07)] the quinona-methide triterpenes tingenone and pristimerin showed marked cytotoxic activity presenting IC50 around 2 and 5 µM respectively. The structure-activity relationship suggests that rings A and B containing an α, ß-unsaturated carbonyl group are essential for the observed cytotoxic activity. The interaction between these positions and acetylcisteyne residues suggests a probable mechanism of action. The in vitro mutagenic activity was also evaluated by the Salmonella microsome assay (Ames test) for pristimerin and tingenone with and without metabolic activation (S9) in the strains TA98, TA97a, TA100 and TA102, none of which showed mutagenic potential in any strains. Estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activities were also studied by the e-screen assay in MCF-7 cells with negative results. The present data point to the importance of pristimerin and tingenone as representative of an emerging class of potential anticancer chemicals.

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a prevalência de anemia entre os pré-escolares da rede pública de Ilhabela (SP) e a resposta ao tratamento instituído. MÉTODOS: Estudo com 667 pré-escolares, entre 2007 e 2008. As crianças foram avaliadas na escola quanto ao peso, estatura e concentração de hemoglobina. As anêmicas foram tratadas com sulfato ferroso por 12 semanas, com uma consulta intermediária e outra ao final. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de anemia foi de 25,6% (170 crianças). A concentração de hemoglobina mais baixa foi de 9,5 g/dL. A maior prevalência de anemia (36%) ocorreu em crianças de 60 a 65 meses de idade. A mediana da concentração de hemoglobina evoluiu de 10,5 g/dL para 11,8 g/dL ao final do tratamento, recuperando 76% das crianças. CONCLUSÃO: A identificação de crianças anêmicas nas escolas, o pronto tratamento da anemia e o acompanhamento durante o tratamento mostrou ser estratégia eficaz no combate a esse importante problema de saúde pública.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of anemia among children attending public preschools in Ilhabela, state of São Paulo, Brazil, and their response to a treatment regimen. METHODS: Between 2007 and 2008, the weight, height, and hemoglobin levels of 667 children were measured in the school setting. Anemic children were prescribed a 12-week course of ferrous sulfate, and follow-up assessment visits were scheduled for halfway through this course and the end of treatment. RESULTS: The prevalence of anemia was 25.6% (N = 170). The lowest hemoglobin level measured was 9.5 g/dL. Anemia was most prevalent (36%) in children between the ages of 60 and 65 months. Median hemoglobin levels rose to 11.8 g/dL from 10.5 g/dL after treatment; 76% of children recovered from anemia. CONCLUSION: Screening for anemia in the school setting and prompt therapy, including mid-treatment follow-up, proved to be an effective strategy for facing this major public health issue.

The use of artificial implants provides a palliative or permanent solution for individuals who have lost some bodily function through disease, an accident or natural wear. This functional loss can be compensated for by the use of medical devices produced from special biomaterials. Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) is a well-established primary metallic biomaterial for orthopedic implants, but the toxicity of the chemical components of this alloy has become an issue of concern. In this work, we used the MTT assay and micronucleus assay to examine the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, respectively, of an extract obtained from this alloy. The MTT assay indicated that the mitochondrial activity and cell viability of CHO-K1 cells were unaffected by exposure to the extract. However, the micronucleus assay revealed DNA damage and an increase in micronucleus frequency at all of the concentrations tested. These results show that ions released from Ti-6Al-4V alloy can cause DNA and nuclear damage and reinforce the importance of assessing the safety of metallic medical devices constructed from biomaterials.

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death among children in developing countries, and mortality due to pneumonia has been associated with S. pneumoniae infection. This investigation was designed to describe the antimicrobial susceptibility and serotype patterns of pneumococcal strains recovered from the blood of children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and to assess the clinical findings of pneumococcal bacteremic patients with pneumonia. In a 26 month prospective study, blood cultures were obtained as often as possible from children (<16 years of age) diagnosed with CAP in two emergency rooms. Antimicrobial drug susceptibility tests and serotyping were performed when pneumococcus was identified. We studied 3,431 cases and cultured blood samples from 65.5% of those. Pneumococcus was recovered from 0.8% of the blood samples. The differences in age, somnolence, wheezing and hospitalization among children with and without pneumococcal bacteremia were statistically significant. Pneumococcal bacteremia was age-related (mean 1.63 ± 1.55; median 0.92) and associated with somnolence and hospitalization among children with CAP. One strain was recovered from pleural fluid. Penicillin resistance was detected in 21.0% (4/19) of the strains at an intermediate level, whereas 63.0% of the strains were resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. The most common serotypes were 14 and 6B, and these serotypes included the resistant strains. Eight of our 18 isolates from blood were of types included in the heptavalent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine, recently licensed in the USA.
