Resumo Objetivos: Efeitos do estresse salino sobre a fisiologia de Salvinia auriculata foram investigados. Metodologia As plantas foram expostas a 0, 50, 100 e 150 mmol de NaCl L-1 e incubadas durante 5 dias. O conteúdo de NO foi avaliado após 2 horas e 5 dias. Pigmentos fotossintéticos, prolina e nutrientes foram analisados após 5 dias. Resultados Principais Observou-se maior teor de clorofila a em plantas tratadas com 50 mmol L-1, diminuindo em concentrações mais altas, enquanto o conteúdo de clorofila b diminuiu com o aumento das concentrações de NaCl. A exposição a 50 mmol L-1 de NaCl aumento a biomassa, enquanto concentrações mais elevadas causaram perda de biomassa. Ca, K e Mg diminuíram com o aumento das concentrações de NaCl, e a razão Na/K foi significativamente aumentada em 150 mmol L-1 NaCl. A prolina aumentou significativamente a 150 mmol L-1. O conteúdo extracelular de NO aumentou após 2 horas, e diminuiu após 5 dias. Após 2 horas, concentrações significativamente maiores nas raízes foram observadas a 50 mmol L-1, enquanto após 5 dias diminuições foram observadas. Conclusões Os resultados indicam que a salinidade moderada induz a produção de NO durante a incubação, possivelmente associada à sinalização para a produção de compostos que auxiliem na tolerância à salinidade. Em concentrações superiores esta tolerância é reduzida. Com isso, é possível compreender melhor os mecanismos fisiológicos e bioquímicos associados a essa adaptação em macrófitas sob condições salinas, que afetam sua ecologia e distribuição em áreas costeiras

Abstract Aims: Effects of salt stress on the physiology of Salvinia auriculata were investigated. Method Plants were supplemented with 0, 50, 100 and 150 mmol L-1 NaCl and incubated for 5 days. NO content was evaluated after 2 hours and 5 days. Photosynthetic pigments, proline and nutrients were analyzed after 5 days. Major Results Higher chlorophyll a content was observed in plants treated with 50 mmol L-1, decreasing in higher NaCl concentrations, while chorophyll b content decreased with increasing NaCl concentrations. Exposure to 50 mmol L-1 NaCl increased biomass, while higher concentrations caused loss of biomass. Ca, K and Mg decreased with increasing NaCl concentrations, and the Na/K ratio was significantly increased at 150 mmol L-1 NaCl. Proline increased significantly at 150 mmol L-1. Extracellular NO content increased after 2 hours, with significantly higher NO concentrations in roots observed at 50 mmol L-1. Decreases in NO content were observed after 5 days. Conclusions The results indicate that moderate salinity induces NO production earlier during incubation, probably associated to signaling for the production of compounds that assist in stress tolerance. At higher concentrations, this tolerance is reduced. This allows for further understanding of the physiological and biochemical mechanisms associated with the adaptation of this macrophyte to saline conditions, which, in turn, affect this species ecology and distribution in coastal areas.

OBJETIVO: Apresentar as estratégias de comunicação e recrutamento no Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto (ELSA-Brasil) e discutir os resultados alcançados na constituição da coorte. MÉTODOS: As estratégias foram voltadas à divulgação, à institucionalização e ao recrutamento propriamente dito. As ações de comunicação pretenderam promover o fortalecimento de imagem institucional positiva para o estudo, a gestão de conhecimentos e o diálogo eficaz com seu público-alvo. Foi criado web site oficial visando dialogar com diferentes públicos, funcionar como difusor científico e contribuir para a consolidação da imagem do estudo perante a sociedade. RESULTADOS: Foram recrutados 16.435 mulheres e homens, servidores ativos e aposentados de seis instituições públicas de ensino e pesquisa para constituir a coorte de 15.105 participantes. As metas de recrutamento foram plenamente alcançadas nos seis centros, com leve predomínio de mulheres e daqueles mais jovens, e um pouco menos de servidores com menor escolarização. CONCLUSÕES: As estratégias utilizadas se mostraram adequadas e essenciais para o sucesso da captação e participação dos servidores.

OBJECTIVE: To present the recruitment and communication strategies of the ELSA-Brasil (Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto - Brazilian Longitudinal Study for Adult Health). METHODS: The strategies were directed at dissemination, institutionalization and recruitment. The communication actions intended to promote the strengthening of a positive institutional image for the study, knowledge management and an effective dialogue with its target audience. An official website was created in order to communicate with different audiences, to disseminate scientific knowledge, and to contribute to consolidate the image of the study within society. RESULTS: We recruited 16,435 men and women, active employees and retirees of six public institutions of education and research, to constitute the cohort of 15,105 participants. The recruitment goals were fully achieved in the six centers, with a slight predominance of women and of younger adults, and slightly fewer employees with lower level of schooling. CONCLUSIONS: The strategies used were adequate and essential to the successful inclusion and participation of the employees.

OBJETIVO: Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar os efeitos dos sais NaCl e Na2SO4 sobre o conteúdo de Ca, Cl, K, Mg, N, P, S, Na; teor de pigmentos fotossintéticos (clorofila-a, clorofilab-b e carotenóides); teor de prolina e a morfologia das folhas de Salvinia auriculata Aubl. MÉTODOS: As plantas foram coletadas na lagoa do Jacu localizada no Norte do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, e após um período de cinco dias de aclimatação foram realizados experimentos em casa de vegetação com as concentrações 0, 100, 200 mM dos sais NaCl e Na2SO4 e utilizadas as técnicas usuais para microscopia óptica e eletrônica; RESULTADOS: Após sete dias de experimento foi verificado a diminuição do conteúdo dos íons Ca2+, K+ , Mg2+, P, N e do teor de pigmentos fotossintetizantes (clorofila-a,b e carotenóides) em Salvinia auriculata submetidas aos tratamentos salinos. O teor de prolina mostrou uma tendência ao incremento quando comparado ao controle. Sob microscopia eletrônica de transmissão, no limbo foliar foi observado uma desorganização do sistema de membranas, principalmente dos cloroplastos com maior presença de grãos de amido das células das plantas submetidas à salinidade. Sob microscópio eletrônico de varredura foi observada a integridade dos tricomas e das células do limbo foliar de Salvinia auriculata submetida ao tratamento controle e mudanças na superfície das células provocadas pela salinização; CONCLUSÕES: Para todos os efeitos da salinização avaliados, foi notado que o incremento na concentração do sal Na2SO4 resultou em maiores alterações morfológicas e nutricionais à macrófita aquática flutuante Salvinia auriculata.

AIM: This study aimed to investigate the effects of NaCI and Na2So4 salts on Ca, CI, K, Mg N, P, S and Na content as well as on the content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b and carotenoids), proline content and on the foliar morphology of Salvinia auriculata Aubl. METHODS: The plants were collected in Jacu lagoon, located in the North of Rio de Janeiro State, and after a five-day-acclimation period, experiments were performed in the greenhouse with 0, 100, 200 mM concentrations of NaCI and Na2SO4 salts and the usual techniques for light and electron microscopy. RESULTS: After seven days of experiment, a decrease in the content of Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, P, N ions as well as in the content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll-a,b and carotenoids) in Salvinia auriculata under saline treatments was observed. The proline content showed an upward tendency as compared to the control. Under transmission electron microscopy, it was observed that, on the foliar limb, there was a membrane system disorder, mainly of chloroplasts, with higher presence of starch grains of plant cells subjected to salinity. Under scanning electron microscope, the integrity of trichomes and foliar limb cells of Salvinia auriculata subjected to the control treatment as well as the changes caused by salinization on the surface of cells were observed. CONCLUSION: As for all the salinization effects evaluated, it was noticed that the increase in Na2SO4 salt concentration resulted in higher morphological and nutritional alterations in the floating aquatic macrophyte, Salvinia auriculata.
