This study searched for a new pre-formulation based on the natural compound from the class of the avermectins, named abamectin (ABA), in order to improve its action against Aedes aegypti larvae by complexation with β-cyclodextrin (βCD). Concerning the low aqueous solubility of ABA, even in the presence of βCD, it was also invoked the strategy of working with hydrophobic nanoprecipitates (HNPs). For these purposes, molecular and supramolecular characterizations of 1:1 ABA/βCD complex and evaluation of its toxicity against A. aegypti larvae were performed. In the physical-chemistry characterizations, changes in the infrared spectra and thermal profiles in relation to precursors confirmed the occurrence of interactions between ABA and βCD in solid state. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data suggest the inclusion of ABA in βCD via benzofuran ring. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments allowed to verify the formation of complex with a 1:1 stoichiometry, which was entropy driven. The dynamic light scattering and zeta potential data from inclusion compounds demonstrated changes in the size of the ABA/βCD HNP if compared with the ABA HNP. Finally, the results for biological assays demonstrate that the strategy to prepare the inclusion compound led to an increase in the larvicidal activity in relation to free ABA.

O mel é um produto natural de abelhas fabricado a partir do néctar das flores (mel floral) e de secreções de partes vivas das plantas, ou de excreções de insetos sugadores de partes vivas das plantas (mel de melato). O melato é uma fonte alternativa de alimento bastante utilizada pela abelha. Em Santa Catarina, o mel de melato é muito conhecido, sendo produzido nos meses de janeiro a abril, em ciclos bianuais. Foram colhidas aleatoriamente 25 amostras de mel, no período de janeiro/93 a junho/96, de diferentes apiários e datas de colheita. Foram determinados os teores de umidade, pH, cinzas e açúcares redutores. Os resultados foram utilizados na aplicação da equação de Kirkwood para classificar o mel como floral ou de melato. As amostras também foram analisadas quanto à rotação óptica para classificação de acordo com White. Das 25 amostras analisadas, 11 foram classificadas como mel de melato de acordo com Kirkwood e White. O estudo estatístico, feito pela aplicação do teste exato de Fisher, indicou que, apesar da divergência em 4 amostras, estes métodos são equivalentes e ambos podem ser usados.

Honey is a natural product made by bees using flower's nectar (floral honey) or excretion of alive parts of plants or either excretion produced by sucking insects from alive parts of plants (honeydew honey). Honeydew is an alternative food source used by bees. In Santa Catarina state, honeydew honey is produced from january to april, each two years. In order to identify the presence of honeydew honey, 25 samples were sampled randomly from january/93 to june/96. They were colected from different apiaries in different periods of time and tested for moisture, pH, ash, reducing sugars, and the results were used in the application of Kirkwood equation to classify honey as floral or honeydew. They were analised for polarimetry, to classify them according to Kirkwood and White. The statistical study was done by the application of exact test of Fisher and, in spite of some divergences found to classify 4 samples, the statistical study showed correlation between Kirkwood and White methods, indicating that both can be used.

Alguns tipos de pães para sanduíches são sensíveis à contaminação por bolores e leveduras. Por isso a legislação brasileira de alimentos permite a adição de propionato de cálcio no limite máximo de 0,2%. A cromatografia gasosa é um método utilizado para quantificação do ácido propiônico, sendo necessária a etapa de extração desse ácido do pão que comumente se encontra sob a forma de propionato de cálcio. Foram feitos vários testes utilizando-se métodos de extração por arraste à vapor, extração etérea contendo 3% de ácido ortofosfórico e extração direta com solução aquosa de ácido fórmico 0,05 M. Foram também testadas várias colunas cromatográficas e verificado o comportamento do ácido isovalérico, ácido butírico e metil isobutil cetona (MIBK) como padrões internos. Em função dos melhores resultados obtidos, optou-se por extrair o ácido propiônico com solução etérea de ácido fórmico 3%, usando ácido butírico como padrão interno e análise cromatográfica na coluna DEGS. A recuperação média de 97,4% foi obtida com propionato de cálcio padrão e de 85,0% com amostras de pão adicionadas de propionato de cálcio. O método mostrou-se preciso, rápido e de fácil execução.

Some kinds of bread for sandwiches are susceptible to contamination by mold and yeast. Therefore, the brazilian food law allows the use of propionate salts to prevent growth of these microorganisms. The maximum level allowed is 0.2%. Gas chromatographic analysis is the method used to quantify propionic acid, which must be extracted from bread that contains these salts, usually calcium propionate. Several tests were performed, using different extraction methods such as steam distillation or extraction with ether containing 0.3% phosphoric acid or 0.05 M formic acid. Three different chromatographic columns and three different internal standards - isovaleric acid, butyric acid and isobutyl methyl ketone (MIBK) were tested. The use of a DEGS column, with butyric acid as internal standard and extraction of propionic acid with 3% formic acid in ether was chosen. The recovery of calcium propionate from a standard solution by this method was 97.4%, while that obtained with samples of bread spiked with this salt was 85%. This method was found to be rapid, precise and easy to execute.
