OBJECTIVES: This study explored the relationship between skipping breakfast and physical fitness in a group of school-aged adolescents in China. METHODS: This cross-sectional study from the Chinese National Surveillance on Students’ Constitution and Health (CNSSCH) survey in Ningbo, China, used a standardized questionnaire to assess the frequency of breakfast consumption. Physical fitness was measured through standing long jump, 50-m sprint, 1,000 (or 800)-m run, and vital capacity tests. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between the frequency of breakfast consumption and physical fitness. RESULTS: Our study included a total of 1,849 school-aged adolescents (aged 15.53±1.80 years). Among boys, non-breakfast-skippers had good scores for 50-m sprints, 1,000-m run, and vital capacity tests when compared with breakfast skippers (all p<0.05). Among girls, non-breakfast-skippers had a good scores for the standing long jump test compared with breakfast skippers (p=0.003). The multiple linear regression model showed that not skipping breakfast was positively associated with vital capacity (β=-173.78, p=0.004) and inversely associated with 50-m sprint (β=-0.12, p=0.018) and 1,000-m run times (β=-8.08, p=0.001) in boys. CONCLUSION: The results of this cross-sectional study revealed that skipping breakfast might be associated with lower physical fitness in Chinese adolescents aged 13-18 years, especially boys. Breakfast consumption should be promoted among Chinese school-aged boys.

Abstract Five compounds were isolated from the peels of chufa (Eleocharis dulcis (Burm.f.) Trin. ex Hensch., Cyperaceae). The chemical structures were determined by various spectroscopic analysis methods, including 1D and 2D NMR, and by comparison with literature data. All compounds were isolated for the first time from the peels of chufa. Compounds orcinol glucoside, leonuriside A, 2-hydroxymethyl-6-(5-hydroxy-2-methyl-phenoxy-methyl)-tetra-hydro-pyran-3,4,5-triol, and 1,4-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-phenyl-4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside showed good acrylamide formation activity, and acrylamide inhibition rates were 30.24, 32.81, 30.53, and 28.18%, respectively.

Abstract: DNA methylation is essential for spatiotemporally-regulated gene expression in embryonic development. TBX22 (Chr X: 107667964-107688978) functioning as a transcriptional repressor affects DNA binding, sumoylation, and transcriptional repression associated with X-linked cleft palate. This study aimed to explore the relationship and potential mechanism between TBX22 exon 5 methylation and palatal shelf fusion induced by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). We performed DNA methylation profiling, using MethylRAD-seq, after high throughput sequencing of mouse embryos from control (n=9) and ATRA-treated (to induce cleft palate, n=9) C57BL/6J mice at embryonic gestation days(E) 13.5, 14.5 and 16.5. TBX22 exon 5 was hyper-methylated at the CpG site at E13.5 (P=0.025, log2FC=1.5) and E14.5 (P=0.011, log2FC:1.5) in ATRA-treated, whereas methylation TBX22 exon 5 at the CpG site was not significantly different at E16.5 (P=0.808, log2FC=-0.2) between control and ATRA-treated. MSP results showed a similar trend consistent with the MethylRAD-seq results. qPCR showed the change in TBX22 exon 5 expression level negatively correlated with its TBX22 exon 5 methylation level. These results indicate that changes in TBX22 exon 5 methylation might play an important regulatory role during palatal shelf fusion, and may enlighten the development of novel epigenetic biomarkers in the treatment of CP in the future.

RESUMO Já se confirmou que o sistema do complemento exerce um papel cada vez mais importante nos acidentes vasculares cerebrais isquêmicos. Este estudo teve o objetivo de determinar se o polimorfismo de nucleotídeo único (SNP) do gene codificador do componente 5 (C5) influencia de forma independente a ocorrência, a severidade e o desfecho em longo prazo do acidente vascular cerebral isquêmico (AVCI) em pacientes chineses. Métodos Variantes genéticas rs17611 do C5 foram investigadas em 494 pacientes com AVCI e em 330 indivíduos controles. O AVCI foi classificado em subtipos e os pacientes foram avaliados 90 dias após o acidente vascular, através da Escala Modificada de Rankin (mRS), para determinação do desfecho do acidente. Resultados A presença de polimorfismo do C5 foi associada à incidência de AVCI do subtipo com aterosclerose de grandes artérias (AGA) (n = 200; p = 0,031), que persistiu mesmo após os ajustes de covariáveis (RP = 1,518; 95% IC = 1,093–2,018; p = 0,013). Entretanto, nenhuma associação foi observada entre os genótipos e a severidade ou o desfecho do acidente vascular (p = 0,978; p = 0,296). Conclusões O polimorfismo do C5 pode contribuir para o risco de AVCI do tipo com AGA, independentemente de outros riscos preditores conhecidos.

ABSTRACT The complement system has been confirmed to play an increasingly important role in ischemic stroke (IS). This study aimed to determine whether the single-nucleotide polymorphism of the complement 5 (C5) gene independently influences the occurrence, severity, and long-term outcome of IS in Chinese patients. Methods C5 rs17611 genetic variants were investigated in 494 IS patients and 330 control individuals .Ischemic stroke was classified into subtypes and patients were assessed 90 days post-stroke with the modified Rankin Scale to determine stroke outcome. Results The presence of C5 polymorphism was associated with the incidence of large artery atherosclerosis (LAA)-subtype IS (n =2 00; p = 0.031), which even persisted after adjustment for covariates (OR = 1.518; 95%CI = 1.093–2.018; p = 0.013). However, no association was found between genotypes and the severity and outcome of stroke (p = 0.978; p = 0.296). Conclusions The C5 polymorphism might contribute to the risk of LAA-subtype IS independently of other known risk predictors.

This work aimed to improve tannase yield of Aspergillus niger through N+ ion beam implantation in submerged fermentation. The energy and dose of N+ ion beam implantation were investigated. The results indicated that an excellent mutant was obtained through nine successive implantations under the conditions of 10 keV and 30-40 (×2.6×10(13)) ions/cm², and its tannase yield reached 38.5 U/mL, which was about five-time higher than the original strain. The study on the genetic stability of the mutant showed that its promising performance in tannase production could be stable. The studies of metal ions and surfactants affecting tannase yield indicated that manganese ions, stannum ions, xylene and SDS contained in the culture medium had positive effects on tannase production under submerged fermentation. Magnesium ions, in particular, could enhance the tannase yield by the mutant increasing by 42%, i.e. 53.6 U/mL. Accordingly, low-energy ion implantation could be a desirable approach to improve the fungal tannase yield for its commercial application.
