Abstract. Reef-forming cnidarians are essential for maintaining ecological balance. Unfortunately, coral reefs are endangered due to coral bleaching, which interrupts mutualistic symbiosis between Symbiodiniaceae algae and their coral hosts. Bleaching events result in very high coral mortality and the rapid deterioration of reef structures. Studies aimed at explaining the causes, mechanisms, and consequences of coral bleaching have been mainly conducted with anthozoans, while the impacts of thermal stress responsible for coral bleaching have been scarcely studied in hydrozoans, such as Millepora species (phylum Cnidaria, class Hydrozoa), which are the second most important reef-forming cnidarians. In the present study, the effects of thermal stress caused by the 2015-2016 El Niño on symbiont abundance, exoskeleton structure, and the biochemical composition of Millepora alcicornis were analyzed. Unbleached M. alcicornis specimens exhibited a higher abundance of Breviolum and Durisdinium species, which suggests that unbleached hydrocoral colonies might counteract thermal stress by hosting thermotolerant symbionts of the Durisdinium genus. Bleached hydrocorals exhibited lower levels of calcification than unbleached hydrocorals as well as changes in the microstructure of trabeculae and zooid pores. In contrast, thermal stress did not affect total calcium carbonate and carbohydrate content. Bleached tissues showed significantly higher levels of protein and refractory material, whereas their lipid content decreased considerably. The present study provides evidence that bleached M. alcicornis colonies suffered a decline in calcification and changes in the structure of their exoskeletons after being exposed to the 2015-2016 El Niño. The significant decrease in lipid content suggests that M. alcicornis primarily uses energy stores to maintain vital cellular processes at the expense of calcification.

Resumen. Los cnidarios formadores de arrecifes son esenciales en la ecología marina. Desafortunadamente, están amenazados por el fenómeno de blanqueamiento, el cual rompe la simbiosis mutualista entre algas de la familia Symbiodiniaceae y sus hospederos coralinos. El blanqueamiento causa un alto índice de mortalidad de corales y un rápido deterioro de las estructuras arrecifales. Los estudios dirigidos a explicar causas, mecanismos y consecuencias del blanqueamiento se han realizado principalmente con antozoos, mientras que los impactos del blanqueamiento de corales se han estudiado escasamente en especies de Millepora (phylum Cnidaria, clase Hydrozoa), que son los segundos constructores de arrecifes más importantes. En el presente estudio se analizó el efecto del estrés térmico causado por el evento El Niño 2015-2016 sobre la abundancia de simbiontes, la estructura del exoesqueleto y la composición bioquímica de Millepora alcicornis. Los especímenes sin blanquear de M. alcicornis contenían una mayor abundancia de especies de Breviolum y Durisdinium, lo que sugiere que las colonias de hidrocorales sin blanquear podrían estar contrarrestando el estrés térmico al albergar simbiontes termotolerantes del género Durisdinium. Los hidrocorales blanqueados mostraron niveles más bajos de calcificación y cambios en la microestructura de zooides y trabéculas. En contraste, el estrés térmico no modificó el contenido total de carbonato de calcio y carbohidratos en los hidrocorales. Los tejidos blanqueados mostraron niveles significativamente más altos de proteína y material refractario, mientras que su contenido de lípidos disminuyó considerablemente. El presente estudio muestra que las colonias blanqueadas de M. alcicornis sufrieron una disminución en la calcificación y cambios en la estructura de su exoesqueleto después de estar expuestas al estrés térmico provocado por el evento El Niño 2015-2016. La disminución significativa en el contenido de lípidos sugiere que M. alcicornis está utilizando sus reservas de energía principalmente para mantener sus procesos celulares vitales a expensas de la calcificación.

Abstract Individuals with malignancies and COVID-19 have a lower survival compared with the general population. However, the information about the impact of COVID-19 on the whole hematological population is scarce. We aimed to describe the 30th day overall survival (OS) after COVID-19 infection in pa tients with a hematological disease in Argentina. A completely anonymous survey from the Argentine Society of Hematology was delivered to all the hematologists in Argentina; it started in April 2020. A cut-off to analyze the data was performed in December 2020 and, finally, 419 patients were reported and suitable for the analysis (average age: 58 years, 90% with malignant diseases). After the COVID-19 diagnosis, the 30-day OS for the whole population was 80.2%. From the entire group (419), 101 (24.1%) individuals required intensive care unit admission, where the 30-day OS was 46.6%. Among allogeneic stem cell transplant recipients, the 30-day OS was 70.3%. Factors associated with a low OS were two or more comorbidities, an active hematological disease and history of chemotherapy. In individuals with the three factors, the 30-day OS was 49.6% while the 30-day OS in those without those factors was 100%. Patients with hematological diseases have a higher mortality than the general population. This group represents a challenge and requires careful decision-making of the treatment in order not to compromise the chances of cure.

Resumen El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo primario conocer la mortalidad de pacientes con enfermedad hematológica que presentaron infección por COVID-19 en Argentina. Para ello se difundió una encuesta desde la Sociedad Argentina de Hematología (SAH) entre los hematológos para informar sobre los pacientes con enfermedades hematológicas y diagnóstico de infección por SARS- CoV-2, entre el 19/4/2020, y el 7/12/2020. Se incluyeron individuos de todas las edades con diagnóstico de enfermedad hematológica benigna o maligna e infección por SARS-CoV-2 confirmada por técnica de RT-PCR. Se analizaron 419 pacientes (mediana 58 años; 90% enfermedades malignas). La supervivencia al día 30 fue de 80.2%. La supervivencia fue menor en aquellos que requirieron internación (74.2%), cuidados intensivos (46.6%) y asistencia respiratoria mecánica (36.8%). Entre los trasplantados alogénicos la supervivencia fue 70.3%. Los factores vinculados a la supervivencia global fueron las comorbilidades, el estado de la enfermedad al momento de la infección y el antecedente de quimioterapia. Se pudo establecer un score en el que aquellos que tuvieron un puntaje de 4 alcanzaron una supervivencia del 49.6% al día 30, mientras que la de los pacientes con score 0 fue del 100% a 30 días. En comparación con la población general, los pacientes con enfermedades hematológicas presentan una mayor mortalidad vinculada al COVID-19, motivo por el cual es primordial definir pautas destinadas a disminuir la exposición de los mismos sin comprometer las posibilidades de beneficiarse del tratamiento de la enfermedad de base.

RESUMEN Las abejas sin aguijón (Apidae: Meliponini) son cultural y económicamente importantes y representan un componente significativo de la melitofauna colombiana. Sin embargo, la fauna de Colombia todavía está en vía de exploración y la identificación de especies es algunas veces difícil o imposible. Revisamos las especies del género de abejas ladronas sin aguijón Lestrimelitta en Colombia y reconocemos las siguientes once especies: L. glabrata, L. guyanensis, L. rufa, L. rufipes y L. spinosa, las cuales registramos por primera vez para el país; L. huilensis, L. opita, L. piedemontana y dos especies nuevas: L. diminuta, sp. n. y L. galvisi sp. n. También confirmamos la presencia de L. limao para la Amazonia colombiana y presentamos registros geográficos nuevos con una clave actualizada para las especies de Centroamérica y norte de Suramérica.

ABSTRACT Stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini) are culturally and economically important bees and they represent a major component of the Colombian melittofauna. However, the bee fauna of Colombia is still in early stages of exploration and species identification is often difficult or impossible. We revised the species of the cleptobiotic stingless bee genus Lestrimelitta in Colombia and recognized the following eleven species: L. glabrata, L. guyanensis, L. rufa, L. rufipes, and L. spinosa, which are recorded for the first time for the country; L. huilensis, L. opita, L. piedemontana, and two new species, L. diminuta, sp. n. and L. galvisi sp. n. We also confirmed the presence of L. limao in the Colombian Amazon and provide new geographical records with an updated key to species from Central America and northern South America.

Abstract This work is focused on the failure analysis of a HP40 steel tube used in steam reformer units, which was operated at about 850 °C for 100000 h. The failure analysis was conducted experimentally and numerically using the Thermo-Calc software. The main results indicated that the failed tube presented slightly different contents of Ni and Cr from the nominal ones, which originated the absence of the interdendritic eutectic microconstituent, composed of austenite and M7C3 carbides. This fact was also corroborated by Thermo-Calc results. This absence of eutectic facilitates the crack propagation on the dendritic zones and then the trangranular brittle fracture propagation through the austenite dendritic zones.

Objective: To assess the effects of antimalarials (AM) over the items of the SLICC Damage Index (SDI). Methods: Patients with recent (≤2 years) diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) from the GLADEL cohort were studied. End-point: increase in items SDI since cohort entry. Independent variables (socio-demographic, clinical, laboratory and treatment) were included. The effect of AM as a time dependent variable on most frequent SDI items (adjusting for potential confounders) was examined with a multivariable Cox regression model. Results: Of the 1466 patients included in this analysis, 1049 (72%) received AM with a median exposure time of 30 months (Q1-Q3: 11-57). Damage occurred in 665 (45%) patients during a median follow-up time of 24 months (Q1-Q3: 8-55). There were 301 integument, 208 renal, 149 neuropsychiatric, 98 musculoskeletal, 88 cardiovascular and 230 others less frequently represented damages. After adjusting for potential confounders at any time during follow-up, a lower risk of renal damage (HR 0.652; 95% CI: 0.472-0.901) and borderline for neuropsychiatric damage (HR 0.701, 95% CI: 0.481-1.024) was found. Conclusion: In the GLADEL cohort, after adjustment for possible confounding factors, AM were independently associated with a reduced risk of renal damage accrual.

Objetivos: Estimar el efecto de los antimaláricos (AM) sobre los diferentes dominios del índice de daño SLICC (SDI). Métodos: Se estudiaron pacientes con diagnóstico clínico reciente (≤2 años) de lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES) de la cohorte GLADEL. Variable de estudio: aumento en los dominios del SDI desde el ingreso a la cohorte. Variables independientes: características sociodemográficas, clínicas, laboratorio y tratamientos. El efecto de los AM, como variable dependiente del tiempo, sobre los dominios más frecuentes del SDI (ajustado por factores de confusión) fue examinado con un modelo de regresión de Cox multivariado. Resultados: De 1466 pacientes estudiados, 1049 (72%) recibieron AM con un tiempo medio de exposición de 30 meses (Q1-Q3: 11-57) y 665 pacientes (45%) presentaron daño durante un seguimiento medio de 24 meses (Q1-Q3: 8-55); 301 eventos fueron cutáneos, 208 renales, 149 neuropsiquiátricos, 98 musculoesqueléticos, 88 cardiovasculares y 230 otros. Después de ajustar por factores de confusión, el uso de AM se asoció a un menor riesgo de daño renal (HR 0,652; IC 95%: 0,472-0,901) y en el límite de la significancia estadística (HR 0,701, IC 95%: 0,481-1,024) para el dominio neuropsiquiátrico. Conclusión: En GLADEL, el uso de AM se asoció independientemente a un menor riesgo de daño acumulado renal.

Sixteen Zn-Al-Cu alloy compositions were prepared by melting pure elements. The as-cast alloys were homogenized at 350 °C for 180 h. Both the as-cast and homogenized alloys were analyzed with X-ray diffractometer and EDX-scanning electron microscope. The Rockwell “B” hardness of both the as-cast and homogenized alloys was determined using the standard procedure. The X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron micrographs indicated the presence of several phases in the as-cast alloys. Some of them do not correspond to those shown in the equilibrium Zn-Al-Cu phase diagram at low temperatures. However, the homogenized alloys showed most of the phases predicted by the equilibrium diagram. The hardness of alloys increases with the Cu content because of the presence of Cu-containing phases such as, the θ and τ’ phases in both alloys. The hardness of the homogenized alloys was lower than that of the as-cast alloys as a result of the elimination of the dendritic structure.

La topografía es un factor que puede afectar considerablemente la diversidad y la distribución de las especies de árboles tropicales. Aniba perutilis, una especie de árbol maderable vulnerable a la extinción, está ampliamente distribuida en fragmentos de bosques andinos, especialmente en aquellos con topografía altamente variable. A partir de trabajo de campo y análisis de regresión logística, estudiamos la estructura de la población y los efectos de la topografía sobre la distribución espacial de este árbol en tres fragmentos de bosque en la cordillera central de Colombia que actualmente se encuentran protegidos. Los individuos de A. perutilis se encontraron principalmente en los filos de montaña y colinas con gradientes topográficos suaves; no se encontraron individuos en los valles. A partir de un modelo de distribución de especies usando datos de presencia/ausencia, mostramos que el hábitat disponible para A. perutilis es considerablemente más pequeño que la extensión de los fragmentos y mucho más reducido que la extensión actual de las áreas protegidas. Nuestros resultados tienen implicaciones importantes para la conservación de A. perutilis y probablemente otras especies de árboles andinos amenazados, los cuales pueden estar restringidos de forma similar debido a la variabilidad topográfica local.

Topography is a factor that can significantly affect the diversity and the distribution of trees species in tropical forests. Aniba perutilis, a timber species listed as vulnerable to extinction, is widely distributed in Andean forest fragments, especially in those with highly variable topography. Based on field surveys and logistic regression analyses, we studied the population structure and the effect of highly variable topography on the spatial distribution of this tree in three protected forest fragments in the central Andes of Colombia. Individuals of A. perutilis were mainly found on mountain ridges and hills with gentle slopes; no individuals were found in valleys. Using a species distribution model with presence/absence data, we showed that the available habitat for A. perutilis is significantly smaller than the extension of the fragments and much smaller than the extension of the currently protected areas. Our results have important implications for the conservation of A. perutilis and likely for other threatened Andean tree species, which can also have locally restricted distributions due to highly variable local topography.

A oxidação da LDL e o estresse oxidativo estão intimamente relacionados com a aterosclerose. Por isso, os antioxidantes naturais têm sido estudados como candidatos promissores. No presente trabalho foi avaliada in vitro a capacidade de inibição da oxidação da LDL pelos compostos bioativos da alga Halimeda incrassata em associação à capacidade antioxidante. O trabalho experimental foi conduzido com extratos polares (extrato aquoso liofilizado e frações ricas em fenólicos) e seu efeito na oxidação da LDL foi avaliado usando LDL precipitada com heparina (hep-LDL), oxidada com íons de Cu2+ e AAPH, como geradores de radicais livres. A H. incrassata apresentou efeito protetor para hep-LDL em ambos sistemas e a presença de compostos fenólicos contribuiu para a atividade em que as frações ricas em fenólicos demonstram capacidade significativa em inibir a oxidação mediada pelos íons de Cu2+. O efeito observado deve estar relacionado com o potencial antioxidante das frações polares medido pela atividade redutora e varredura do radical DPPH. Os resultados obtidos demonstram as propriedades antioxidantes e de inibição da oxidação da LDL da H. incrassata e podem contribuir para as evidências de futuras aplicações fitoterapêuticas desta alga.

LDL oxidation and oxidative stress are closely related to atherosclerosis. Therefore, natural antioxidants have been studied as promising candidates. In the present study, the LDL oxidation inhibition activity of bioactive compounds from Halimeda incrassata seaweed. associated to antioxidant capacity, was evaluated in vitro. Experimental work was conducted with lyophilized aqueous extract and phenolic-rich fractions of the seaweed and their effect on LDL oxidation was evaluated using heparin-precipitated LDL (hep-LDL) with exposure to Cu2+ ions and AAPH as the free radical generator. H. incrassata had a protective effect for hep-LDL in both systems and the presence of phenolic compounds contributed to the activity where phenolic-rich fractions showed significant capacity for inhibition of oxidation mediated by Cu2+ ions. The observed effect could be related to the antioxidant potential of polar fractions evidenced by reducing activity and DPPH• radical scavenging. The results obtained in vitro further support the antioxidant and LDL oxidation inhibition properties of H. incrassata and further knowledge toward future phytotherapeutic application of the seaweed.

Neurocysticercosis, the infection of the human central nervous system by the larval stage of the cestode Taenia solium, is an important cause of epilepsy and other neurological manifestations in Peru and most developing countries. Since 1987, the Cysticercosis Working Group in Peru has performed a series of epidemiological studies which led to estimate the impact and to better understand the transmission of Taenia solium. This information was later applied to the design and execution of a control program in Tumbes, in the Northern Coast of Peru. This paper reviews the main epidemiological findings, as well as the conceptual framework of the elimination program and the tools used. Advances in the control of taeniasis/cysticercosis in our country open the road towards its elimination and potential eradication.

La neurocisticercosis, infección del sistema nervioso humano por el estadio larvario de la Taenia solium, es una causa importante de epilepsia y otras manifestaciones neurológicas en el Perú y en la mayoría de países en desarrollo. Desde 1987, el Grupo de Trabajo en Cisticercosis en Perú ha desarrollado una serie de estudios epidemiológicos que han llevado a estimar el impacto y entender la transmisión de la Taenia solium, y que posteriormente se aplicaron al diseño y ejecución de un programa de control en Tumbes, en la costa norte del país. En este artículo se revisan los principales hallazgos epidemiológicos, así como las líneas generales del programa de eliminación y las herramientas utilizadas. Los avances en el control de la teniasis/cisticercosis en nuestro país abren el camino hacia su eliminación y eventual erradicación.

Se describe e ilustra una especie nueva del género de abejas de cabeza larga Chlerogas Vachal (Halictinae: Augochlorini) a partir de un macho capturado a grandes alturas en el centro de Colombia. Chlerogas tatamaensis Engel & Gonzalez, especie nueva, se distingue de otras especies del género por la coloración y puntuación del integumento como también por caracteres de los órganos genitales del macho. También se presenta una clave actualizada para las especies de Chlerogas.

A new species of the long-headed bee genus Chlerogas Vachal (Halictinae: Augochlorini) is described and figured from a male captured at high elevation in central Colombia. Chlerogas tatamaensis Engel & Gonzalez, new species, is distinguished from its congeners on the basis of integumental coloration and sculpturing as well as features of the male terminalia. A revised key to the species of Chlerogas is provided.

We provide information on the nesting habitats of the carpenter bee Xylocopa (Neoxylocopa) lachnea from the cordillera Oriental of Colombia. We also provide an overview of the genus Xylocopa in Colombia as well as identification keys to the subgenera and most common species in the country.

Describimos e ilustramos tres especies nuevas de abejas del género Chilicola Spinola que habitan en grandes alturas en la cordillera Oriental de Colombia: C. (Anoediscelis) paramoides Gonzalez sp. nov., C. (Hylaeosoma) bochica Gonzalez sp. nov., and C. (Oroediscelis) deborahae Gonzalez sp. nov. También presentamos notas biológicas y discutimos la relación filogenética de C. deborahae; los nidos de esta especie fueron encontrados dentro de inflorescencias secas de Espeletia argentea Humb. & Bonpl. (Asteraceae) y análisis palinológicos mostraron que el 80% de los granos de polen encontrados en las celdas de cría pertenecían a Arcytophyllum aff. nitidum y A. muticum (Rubiaceae). También se registra la avispa ichneumonida Grotea sp. parasitando celdas de cría de C. deborahae.

We describe and illustrate three new bee species of the genus Chilicola Spinola that occur at high altitudes in the Eastern Andes of Colombia: C. (Anoediscelis) paramoides Gonzalez sp. nov., C. (Hylaeosoma) bochica Gonzalez sp. nov., and C. (Oroediscelis) deborahae Gonzalez sp. nov. We also provide biological notes and discuss the phylogenetic relationships of C. deborahae; nests of this species were found inside dry flower stems of Espeletia argentea Humb. & Bonpl. (Asteraceae) and a palynological analysis showed that 80 % of the pollen grains found in brood cells belonged to Arcytophyllum aff. nitidum and A. muticum (Rubiaceae). The ichneumonid wasp Grotea sp. is also recorded parasitizing brood cells of C. deborahae.

La venta de artesanías adornadas con semillas es una fuente importante de dinero para un grupo indígena Emberá-Katío desplazado que vive en la ciudad de Florencia (Departamento del Caquetá, Colombia). Presentamos una lista de las 34 especies de plantas (23 géneros en 10 familias) usadas en las artesanías, así como información sobre dónde y cómo las obtienen. El principal material usado son las semillas de legumbres nativas (familia Fabaceae). La mayoría de las artesanías son hechas de semillas de Ormosia nobilis (Fabaceae), Canna edulis (Cannaceae), y Sapindus saponaria (Sapindaceae). Casi la mitad de las especies de plantas usadas por los Emberá-Katío son árboles. Las semillas son recolectadas en pequeños parches de bosques secundarios cerca o dentro de la ciudad, excepto las semillas de Coix lacryma-jobi (Poaceae) y Ormosia sp., las cuales son obtenidas de otras tribus indígenas locales como los Koreguajes y Uitotos. Debido a que la mayoría de las plantas son nativas y ampliamente distribuidas en la región neotropical, sugerimos que a pesar de la transformación cultural, al menos parte del conocimiento cultural todavía se mantiene, y especulamos que otros grupos Emberá también podrían usar las mismas o especies similares de plantas. También proporcionamos los nombres en Español y Emberá de las plantas usadas en las artesanías.

The sale of handicrafts embellished with seeds is an important source of income for a displaced indigenous Emberá-Katío group that lives in the city of Florencia (Departamento of Caquetá, Colombia). We provide a list of the 34 plant species (23 genera in 10 families) used in handicrafts, as well as information on where and how the are obtained. Seeds of native legumes (family Fabaceae) are the main material used. Most manufactured items have seeds of Ormosia nobilis (Fabaceae), Canna edulis (Cannaceae), and Sapindus saponaria (Sapindaceae). About half of the plant species used by the Emberá-Katío are perennial trees. Except for the seeds of Coix lacryma-jobi (Poaceae) and Ormosia sp., which are obtained from other local indigenous groups such as the Koreguajes and Uitotos, all seeds are collected from small patches of secondary forest near or within the city. Because most plants used are native and widely distributed in the Neotropical region, we suggest that, despite cultural transformation, at least some cultural knowledge about native plants is still maintained, and we speculate that other Emberá groups might use the same or similar plant species. We also provide the Spanish and Emberá names of the plants used in the handicrafts.
