Este estudo objetivou avaliar efeitos da experiência de creche no desenvolvimento cognitivo de crianças freqüentando creche, em comparação com crianças que permaneciam em casa, todas de um bairro pobre de Salvador e condições sócio econômicas eqüivalentes. Dois grupos de crianças (18 em creche e 19 em casa), juntamente com suas mães, participaram do estudo. As Escalas Bayley ou WPPSI-R (dependendo da idade da criança) foram aplicadas quatro vezes em 26 meses; subsidiariamente, as mães foram entrevistadas para fornecer uma avaliação do desempenho da criança a partir de seu ponto de vista. Os resultados mostraram que o desenvolvimento cognitivo foi afetado pela renda das famílias e, parcialmente, pela escolaridade materna. Freqüentar a creche não produziu resultados significativos em desempenho cognitivo, enquanto a avaliação materna indicou algumas diferenças entre os dois grupos na primeira avaliação, que desapareceram, na maior parte, na última. Os resultados são parcialmente compatíveis com a literatura, e suas implicações são discutidas.

This study aimed to assess effects of the day care center experience on the cognitive development of pre-school children. Two groups of children, 18 from day care centers and 19 who were cared for at their homes were studied, including their mothers, took part in this study. Both groups had equivalent socioeconomic status and lived in a very poor neighborhood. Bayley Scales or WPPSI-R Scale (according to age) were used four times in a 26 month period; as an auxiliary research instrument, the mothers were interviewed for providing a child assessment from their own point of view. The results show that family income and, to some extent, the mother's school level affected cognitive development. Attendance to a day care center did not produce significant differences in cognitive development; maternal assessments suggested some differences between groups in the first evaluation, which disappeared, most of them, in the last one. These results are compatible partially with international literature and their implications are discussed.

Segundo a teoria do investimento parental, seria esperada uma relação entre condições de criação da mãe e sua carreira reprodutiva e, por conseqüência, seus padrões de cuidado aos filhos, com repercussões no desenvolvimento das crianças. Esta pesquisa buscou verificar essas relações, em amostra de 37 mães e seus filhos entre um e quatro anos, de um bairro pobre de Salvador, Bahia. Foi investigada a história familiar e reprodutiva das mães, associada a resultados desenvolvimentais das crianças, medidos através das escalas Bayley e WIPPSI-R, em quatro avaliações realizadas ao longo de três anos. Foram encontradas correlações entre condições de criação da mãe e sua carreira reprodutiva subseqüente. Por sua vez, esses padrões mostraram-se modestamente relacionados ao desenvolvimento cognitivo de seus filhos, favorecendo as crianças cujas mães iniciaram sua vida reprodutiva mais tarde. Os resultados são, em geral, compatíveis com a teoria do investimento parental. Limitações do estudo e perspectivas futuras são discutidas.

According to the parental investment theory, it would be expected an association between maternal family environment and her reproductive behavior and, as a consequence, her patterns of parental investment on her children, with effects on their development. This study aimed to verify that association, in a sample of 37 mothers and their children (one to four years old), in a poor neighborhood of Salvador, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. We studied the family and reproductive history of the mothers and assessed the cognitive development of children, through Bayley and WIPPSI-R scales, in four assessments during three years. We found correlation between the raising environment of the mother and her subsequent reproductive patterns. These patterns were related to cognitive development of children, favoring children whose mothers started their reproductive life later. The results are, in general, compatible with the parental investment theory. Limitations of the study and future perspectives are discussed.

Para a análise dos significados de proteção a meninas pobres da Bahia do século XIX recorreu-se a documentos de orfanatos e varas de órfãos. Os conteúdos foram organizados nas categorias formas de abandono e práticas educacionais e disciplinares. Os resultados indicaram que a proteção significava abrigar as meninas, alimentá-las e treiná-las em algumas habilidades. Não havia preocupação com a superação da condição social pré-institucional. Para as famílias, a institucionalização significava proteção. O Estado limitava-se a encaminhá-las para instituições e a contribuir com subvenções. A proteção a meninas representava o cumprimento de regras morais vigentes e a delimitação do lugar da mulher. A criança era um vir-a-ser.

For an analysis of the means of protection offered to poor girls in 19th-century Bahia, we have examined documents of orphanage institutions and judges of orphans. The contents were organized into these categories: forms of abandonment, educational and discipline practices. The results indicate the protection offered to the girls meant: shelter, nourishment, and instruction in some abilities. There was no concern to a long-term amelioration of the pre-orphanage socioeconomic status. For the families, the orphanage represented protection. The role of the State was limited; it consisted on directing the girls to the orphanages and on contributing with subsidies. The means of protection were effected in order to maintain certain standards of morality of the period and the delimitation of a socially-acceptable environment for women. The child was understood as "future".
